Choices about which artists you see in our galleries, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don\u2019t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.\u00a0\u00a0\n \nIn this online exhibition, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum\u2019s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery, which will open in early 2021, you\u2019ll be able to experience the changes we\u2019re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history.\u00a0\n \nBy challenging our own practice, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles, and fails to settle for, simple narratives.\u00a0\n \n\u201cInvisible things are not necessarily \u2018not there\u2019.... Such dynamics after a surge in inflation lead to a rise in aggregate vacancies relative to unemployment, associating a seemingly tight labor market with lower average real wages. Calibrating with pre-2020 data, we show the model can simultaneously match the trends in worker flows and wage changes during the 2021-2024 period. Using historical data, we further show that prior periods of high inflation were also associated with an increase in vacancies and an upward shift in the Beveridge curve. Finally, we show that other \u201chot labor market\u201d theories that can cause an increase in the aggregate vacancy-to-unemployment rate have implications that are inconsistent with the worker flows and wage dynamics observed during the recent inflationary period. In scenarios with rich opportunities for adaptive mutations, large population sizes can promote fixation of hypermutator strains via increased mutation supply. However, factors that might suppress hypermutator traits in large asexual populations are less understood. In this talk, I\u2019ll discuss ongoing agent-based modeling experiments investigating how scenarios with few beneficial mutations available (i.e., limited adaptive potential) affect mutator dynamics across a continuum of population sizes and spatial structures. We will also survey technical aspects of the work, which harnesses the 850,000-processor Cerebras Wafer-Scale Engine to achieve simulation of population sizes ranging up to 1.5 billion with a 111,091\u00d7 speedup over CPU execution. These experiments reflect an initial step in investigating the potential for next-generation computing hardware to substantially scale up scope tractable within in silico models. We show that locations within Vietnam closer to China gain more\u2014a border effect\u2014in output and new FDI, particularly for industries producing goods with strong demand from the US and larger S301 tariff increase for China exports. We also analyze the environmental impact of Vietnam's surging economic growth and find that Vietnam is not repeating China's economic development story that features severe pollution. A major challenge with high-speed propulsion is the limited time scales available to mix\r\nand combust the flow within the residence time. When exploring practical propulsion systems, the requirement to utilize liquid fuels adds a further challenge,\r\nas the liquid needs to breakup, evaporate, mix, and burn within the same residence time. One promising method to deal with this challenge is to utilize\r\ndetonations or shock waves to accelerate the breakup, evaporation, and combustion. The details of a shock or detonation-driven breakup of liquid droplets is\r\nreceiving significant attention. However, a physical understanding and modeling of such multiphase detonations are hampered by a lack of models for the\r\nevolution and breakup of a single droplet after a shock or detonation. Experimental studies of this problem are available but can only measure macroscopic\r\nproperties and cannot resolve the quantitative details at small scales. High-fidelity interface-resolving numerical studies are needed to understand the\r\nbreak-up process better and the similarities and differences between detonation and shock-driven breakup.\r\n\r\nThe goals of this thesis are: 1) to gain insights into the stages of breakup and secondary droplet distribution throughout the breakup, 2) to leverage the stages\r\nof breakup and the droplet distribution to understand the impact of evaporation and how that may impact liquid fueled detonations. The breakup was found\r\nto follow five stages. Two of the key stages are the droplet flattening due to the pressure difference, while instabilities form on the droplet surface. That is\r\nfollowed by the rapid recurrent piercing of the droplet by these surface instabilities, resulting in the sudden catastrophic shattering of the droplet. The fraction\r\nof mass contained in secondary droplets was found to be minimal until this recurrent piercing. During the recurrent piercing, the secondary droplets followed\r\na log-normal distribution, with a few larger droplets not well represented by the log-normal distribution. However, these large droplets were short-lived and\r\nrapidly decayed to the log-normal distribution. This allows for the breakup to be approximated as an induction time until the breakup begins, followed by a\r\nbreakup where droplets are shed at the final log-normal distribution. For detonation-driven breakup, a similar process occurs, and the breakup time scale is\r\nsignificantly faster than the evaporation time scale for the primary droplet, resulting in minimal evaporation prior to breakup. Thus, the evaporation is\r\ncontrolled by the resulting change in the effective area due to the breakup and secondary droplet distribution. This allows for an extension of the mass\r\nstripping model to account for the induction time prior to breakup beginning and accounting for the secondary droplet distribution. Further work exploring\r\nliquid-fueled detonations is needed as the current work predicts the breakup and resulting distribution will control the evaporation time scales, but the mixing\r\nand ignition delay times scales have not yet been explored. Using circularly polarized light, artificial magnetic fields can be created in the photon-dressed Floquet-Bloch states that form. This mechanism, when applied to 3D Dirac and Weyl systems, is predicted to lead to photon-dressed movement of Weyl nodes which should be detectable in the transport sector. Using ultrafast transport methodology, we find direct evidence of transport from Floquet-Bloch states in the type-II Weyl semimetal T_d - MoTe_2 . In our measurements, we observed injection currents, and a helicity-dependent anomalous Hall effect whose scaling with laser field strongly deviate from the perturbative expectation of nonlinear optics. We show using Floquet theory that this discovery corresponds to the formation of a magnetic Floquet-Weyl semimetal state. Numerical ab initio simulations support this interpretation, indicating that the light-induced motion of the Weyl nodes contributes significantly to the measured transport signals. Moreover, from the amplitude of the light-induced anomalous Hall effect, we deduce that these photon-dressed states induce a large effective non-Maxwellian field (>30 T) during the drive.\r\n\r\nIn addition to modifying the topological transport properties during the field, we also discovered that mid-infrared light can efficiently excite coherent interlayer shear phonons which we can capture directly in the transport sector. We measure coherence between the phonon oscillation and the nonlinear Hall effect, which we interpret as an oscillation of the Weyl node positions in the Brillouin zone. It focuses on the Hamidian era \u2013 the reign of Sultan Abd\u00fclhamid II (1876-1909) \u2013 and how empire-wide bureaucratic networks collaborated to label Armenians as undesirable subjects and prevent migrants\u2019 return to the empire. It argues that the meticulous efforts on the part of the Ottoman state to document the identities of emigrating Armenians through a photographic archive represent a significant example of how the emergent technologies of state surveillance contributed to an exclusive conception of imperial subjecthood. Photography and archiving became engines of state-building and ethnonational ideology. Building on my dissertation research, this talk also introduces my second project, which explores the new demarcations of imperial belonging, and the changing anxieties and vocabularies for managing imperial security during the Balkan Wars and World War I. I investigate how enemy aliens, and people from the lost territories in the Balkans were photographed and expatriated. I will discuss the terms deportation and abandonment and demonstrate that emptying the Ottoman landscape of undesirable people was not only a political and bureaucratic project, but also a visual and archival one.\r\n \r\n Bio: Hazal \u00d6zdemir received her PhD in History at Northwestern University in May 2024.
