SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Steve Glazer Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glazer earned his BFA in art with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University\, a master’s degree in art from Central Michigan University\, and MFA in fine arts and ceramics from Indiana State University. Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. After returning home to Detroit\, Glazer began his griot series\, the “Motor City Griot Society” masks\, the faces of the superheroes that will save Detroit\, and more recently the “Motor City Griot Patrol” creatures that will protect the city of Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Susan Moran Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Susan Moran’s work is inspired by the natural world and our place in it. She collects and arranges images\, builds and subtracts\, and uses processes that suit the concepts and gives the pieces a reason for existing as textiles. Simultaneously she strives to make the medium influence the outcome in such a way that cloth and image meld together. Moran uses silkscreen\, shibori\, and stitching to embed images from her daily walks into the fabric. it's important that the work builds slowly\, involving meditative processes that connect her to the cloth and the source of the design.\n\nGallery hours: Monday-Friday\, 9 am to 5pm or by appointment serrag@med.umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Touch
DESCRIPTION:Ericka Lopez is a visual artist born in Mexico and living in Los Angeles. Lopez lost her sight at an early age and is mostly non-verbal. This exhibition of tactile assemblage works and gestural coiled pots were created by the artist through touch and texture\, colored by memory. The works are sensory\, physical\, immediate\, reaffirming\, and deeply expressive. Viewers to this exhibition are invited to touch the work. \n\nDuring her residency\, the artist and her support team\, which includes her mother and translator\, will engage directly with students in the exhibition space\, offering a transformative experience based on human expression and connection through art. Because Ericka feels most comfortable when she is working\, she plans to make artwork with students as part of the class engagements with the exhibition.\n\nAbout Ericka Lopez\nBorn 1987 in Mexico\, Ericka Lopez has been making art at Tierra del Sol Studios since 2019. Working across ceramic\, fiber\, and mixed media constructions\, Lopez’s practice is centralized around her exploration of touch. Lopez was born with limited vision and is now completely blind. Lopez trained in massage therapy and previously volunteered at a soup kitchen when an encounter with Tierra’s ceramics studio shifted her trajectory toward fine art. Her masterful command of clay hand-building techniques enables Lopez to create intricate\, dynamic\, and organically structured coil vessels. Lopez’s works are informed by her finite recollection of color\; she requests specific shades and combinations of glazes that generate spontaneous\, distinctive surfaces when fired. This intuitive approach continues in her fiber wall works and mixed media sculptures. Utilizing punch rug embroidery\, Lopez creates abstract fields of yarn and found objects\, often repeatedly punching through the same area to yield densely layered sections. Lopez has learned to identify the color of her materials via scent and feel\, a process that is difficult to put into words. Her mixed media sculptures are created almost entirely by touch\, consisting of threads\, buttons\, beads\, fabric scraps\, and found objects instinctively stitched together using simple sewing techniques. Lopez hopes her works can be experienced through an inquiry of touch.\n\nEricka Lopez has exhibited her artwork at Laband Gallery and Tierra del Sol Gallery in Los Angeles\, CA. Lopez’s debut solo exhibition\, “Continuous Touch\,” was curated by jill moniz for Tierra del Sol Gallery in the Spring of 2023. She has had works acquired by notable private collections such as that of Beth DeWoody and by the Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum at UC Long Beach.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Neurodiversity in the Workplace (Part 1)
DESCRIPTION:Neurodiversity is the new hot topic in the realm of disability inclusion and accessibility—and with good reason. A significant percentage of people are now recognized as having neurotypes that are not well supported by societal norms and our collective understanding of how to communicate across and support neurodiversity is still developing. Fortunately researchers\, educators\, and advocates who identify as neurodivergent are contributing to a growing body of best practices. \n\nJoin the LSA Faculty & Staff Disability Navigators for this two-part workshop to learn about neurodiversity and how we can all start creating more neuroinclusive workplaces. \n\nParticipants will:\n1. Understand what neurodiversity is and how the concept has evolved over time.\n2. Reflect on the ways neurodiversity shapes our experiences\, behaviors\, aptitudes\, and understanding of the world.\n3. Gain insight into how contemporary work norms can exclude and create barriers for a range of neurotypes.\n4. Explore neuroinclusive practices we can proactively integrate into our workplaces.\n5. Become familiar with relevant resources for LSA employees. \n\nAudience: This is a beginner-level workshop open to any LSA employee\, including our student employees. LSA employees receive priority access\, so while external guests are welcome to register they may be waitlisted and allocated spots as space allows.\n\nImportant note: Please do your best to register for and attend both parts 1 and 2 as the content builds on itself. This workshop will not be recorded.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Arbor Glyph
DESCRIPTION:Arbor Glyph is an installation centered around a collective painting of trees\, created by Stamps students and activated by a colorful projection repurposing hand-painted elements and bringing them to life. The goal of the exhibition is to foster collaboration among student artists and engage the Stamps community\, encouraging participation through a student painting party earlier this month\, with a focus on inclusion\, expression\, and finding solace in local landscapes. The Student-led Exhibition Committee (SEC) is a newly-formed group of students\, faculty\, and staff\, aiming to create more opportunities for undergrads to exhibit on campus. Arbor Glyph follows their Winter 2024 salon-style exhibition L'Assemblage in the Stamps Art &amp\; Architecture Building\, further developing students' experience planning extracurricular exhibitions by showing in the Stamps Gallery\, and taking a new approach to creating/curating artwork.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 13 – December 7\, 2024Opening Reception: September 19\, 2024\n\nKelly Church &amp\; Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue is a major exhibition that centers the subjectivities of two contemporary Indigenous artists whose practices have sustained and bolstered the relevance of the age-old Anishinaabe practice of black ash basket-making in the 21st century. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Together\, the exhibition offers an incisive critique of the colonial\, racist paradigm of systemic erasure and assimilation that continues to this day\, with the ongoing crises of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, culture wars\, and climate change that threaten Indigenous ways of living\, sustenance\, and making. \nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra with Curatorial Assistant Zoi Crampton.\nStamps Gallery is grateful to Michigan Humanities and U-M Arts Initiative for generously supporting the exhibition and programs.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series | Tyrannical Tigers and Endangered Cats: Why Are the Korean Scholar-Bureaucrats Always So Important in Modern Japan?
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This lecture will be held in person in room 1010 Weiser Hall and virtually via Zoom. This webinar is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Once you've registered\, the joining information will be sent to your email. Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/RmN4G\n \n The Korean scholar-bureaucrats (yangban) have been drawing public attention among Japanese intellectuals since the beginning of the 20th century. This lecture reviews how Japanese magazines represented yangban\, tracing how their image changed from the evil noblemen that kept Korean society stagnant to the graceful embodiers of vanishing authentic Korean culture. Both these images\, and even the transition from one to the other\, were driven by a Japanese version of orientalism.\n \n Shimpei Cole Ota is a sociocultural anthropologist trained both in Seoul National University (ABD\, 2003) and Osaka University (Ph.D.\, 2007). His basic question focuses on what brings drastic changes to societies and cultures\, especially before and after modernization\, liberalization\, and globalization in South Korea and Korean America.\n \n This lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at umcjs@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:LSI Seminar Series: Jiefu Li\, Ph.D.\, HHMI Janelia Research Campus
DESCRIPTION:Molecular compartmentalization is vital for cellular physiology. For instance\, proteins for intercellular adhesion and communication are localized to the cell surface while many energy-producing enzymes stay in the mitochondrion. High-resolution\, proteome-wide mapping of protein localization is of core importance for understanding cellular organization and processes. \n\nIn this talk\, Jiefu Li\, Ph.D.\, will describe an end-to-end pipeline for in situ cell-surface proteomics\, from chemical and transgenic tools to a user-friendly platform for data analysis\, and present how in situ cell-surface proteomics of developing brains discovers “outside-the-box” regulators of neuronal wiring. Moreover\, in vivo interactome mapping of key synaptic organizers uncovers the cellular and molecular mechanisms of synaptic matching and maturation and highlights the RhoGAP/RhoGEF as a signaling hub for synaptic development.\n\nSpeaker:\nJiefu Li\, Ph.D.\nGroup Leader\, 4D Cellular Physiology\nJanelia Research Campus\, Howard Hughes Medical Institute

SUMMARY:Presentation:Perinatal Mental Health Equity: Research and Policies Relevant to Social Work
DESCRIPTION:Perinatal mental health is gaining recognition as a key antecedent of adverse maternal and child outcomes as the United States experiences a maternal mortality and morbidity crisis. Recent policy efforts have attempted to mitigate adverse outcomes through legislation and extending access to care with postpartum coverage through Medicaid expansion. Even with progress\, perinatal mental health policy continues to grapple with a basic truth: The United States lacks an overarching health care system capable of meeting the mental health care needs of perinatal people and their families. Moreover\, the burden of undiagnosed and untreated perinatal mental health challenges remains greatest among racially minoritized populations\, such as Black\, Asian\, and multiracial people. A broader understanding of perinatal mental health is needed\, grounded in the tenets of reproductive justice. Drawing from the reproductive justice framework and the NAPSW code of ethics\, this talk will articulate specific policies to meet perinatal mental health challenges and promote thriving for birthing people and their families.\n\nFree and open to the public. \n**Due to an overwhelming response\, we are no longer offering Continuing Education credit to eligible attendees.** However\, we are still accepting RSVPs! Those who RSVPd early on and indicated they were interested in receiving CE credit will still be allowed to fulfill the requirements for CE credit\, but unfortunately\, we cannot continue to offer this option to further RSVPs. We hope to receive your RSVP so that you can attend. Please let us know if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ChE SEMINAR: Zachary Smith\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe chemical and petrochemical industries consume nearly 30% of global energy use\, nearly half of which is a result of chemical separations. A major opportunity exists in identifying more efficient\, productive\, and environmentally friendly processes that operate in a continuous fashion. One attractive possibility is membrane-based separations\, but significant materials limitations exist in designing membranes that can selectively distinguish between molecules with sub-angstrom differences in size and nearly identical thermodynamic properties. To survey these challenges and describe emerging opportunities\, a brief overview of the current state-of-the-art in membrane-based materials and applications will be presented. Next\, several design strategies will be presented on how to leverage pore structure and pore functionality to control separation performance. A particular emphasis will be placed on new materials chemistries with a focus on testing materials under complex gas mixtures and for extended periods of time. Microporous materials\, including polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)\, will be highlighted to demonstrate the many opportunities that exist for scientists and engineers to tackle global challenges in chemical separations today.\n\nSpeaker Bio:\nZachary P. Smith is an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at MIT. He has been recognized with several awards\, including the DoE Early Career Award\, NSF CAREER Award\, ONR Young Investigator Award\, AIChE 35 Under 35 Award\, AIChE Kunesh Award for Separations\, and the North American Membrane Society Young Membrane Scientist Award. He was also awarded the Frank E. Perkins Award for Excellence in Graduate Advising at MIT. Prof. Smith serves on the Board of Directors for the North American Membrane Society and is an Associate Editor for Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research. He is a co-founder and Chief Scientist for Osmoses Inc.\, a startup company aiming to commercialize membrane technology.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Developing Educational Interventions Addressing the “Messiness” of Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Engineering textbooks have problems\, and those problems have problems. While they may be complex and time-consuming\, textbook problems are “tidy” in that they are well-defined\, closed-ended\, and decontextualized. In contrast\, the practice of engineering is “messy.” The design process is ill-defined\, modeling and analysis are open-ended\, and the engineered systems affect and are affected by society in positive and negative ways. In this talk I frame the messiness of engineering as an important part of the conversation about DEI in engineering. By exposing students to the messiness of engineering throughout their undergraduate education\, instructors can better prepare students for their careers\; help students to reflect upon their views and biases\; and present engineering as socially constructed\, instead of inherently upholding a white supremacist culture. I will then present the SHUTTLE Lab’s design-based research approach to putting some of this messiness back into engineering science courses. Specifically\, I will describe our work addressing the messiness of mathematical modeling. We are focused on the professional skill of engineering judgment\, and are simultaneously creating open-ended modeling problems\, studying emerging engineering modeling judgment\, and training faculty to notice and respond to their students’ displays of engineering judgment. \n\nBio: Aaron W. Johnson is an Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering and a Core Faculty member in Engineering Education Research at the University of Michigan. His design-based research focuses on how to re-contextualize engineering science engineering courses to better reflect and prepare students for the reality of ill-defined\, sociotechnical engineering practice. Aaron holds a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Michigan and a Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, and was an instructor in Aerospace Engineering Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder. Outside of work\, Aaron enjoys collecting LEGO NASA sets\, camping\, and playing disc golf.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CMENAS and Georgia State University Lecture Series. Bridging the Gulf: Patterns in Contemporary story from Kuwait to Oman
DESCRIPTION:This presentation focuses on the importance of studying contemporary Gulf states. The definition of contemporary in this context considers the period starting from the early 1990s. The reason for this has to do with the collapse of the Soviet Union\, regional changes like the invasion of Kuwait and its consequences\, and the wider Middle Eastern regional consequences. The presentation also looks at the patterns that emerged in all Gulf states at the same time in different contexts: political\, economic\, and social.\n\nMahjoob Zweiri is a professor of contemporary politics and Middle Eastern history with a focus on Iran and the Gulf region. He was the director of the Gulf Studies Center at Qatar University from 2018 to 2024 and the head of the humanities department from 2011 to 2016. Before joining Qatar University in 2010\, Zweiri was a senior researcher in Middle Eastern politics and Iran at the Center for Strategic Studies\, University of Jordan. From March 2003 to December 2006\, he was a research fellow and then director of the Centre for Iranian Studies in the Institute for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at Durham University. Zweiri has more than 95 publications in the areas of Iran\, contemporary Middle Eastern history and politics\, Gulf studies\, social sciences in universities of the future\, and artificial intelligence’s role in social sciences. In addition to Arabic\, he is fluent in Farsi and English. Zweiri is the founder and editor of the *Journal of Gulf Studies*\, published by Intellect\, and editor of the book series *Contemporary Gulf States*. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IOE 899: High-dimensional Optimization with Applications to Compute-Optimal Neural Scaling Laws
DESCRIPTION:About the speaker: Courtney Paquette is an assistant professor at McGill University and a CIFAR Canada AI chair\, MILA. She was awarded a Sloan Research Fellowship in Computer Science in 2024. Paquette’s research broadly focuses on designing and analyzing algorithms for large-scale optimization problems\, motivated by applications in data science. She is also interested in scaling limits of stochastic learning algorithms. She received her PhD from the mathematics department at the University of Washington (2017)\, held postdoctoral positions at Lehigh University (2017-2018) and the University of Waterloo (NSF postdoctoral fellowship\, 2018-2019)\, and works 20% as a research scientist at Google DeepMind\, Montreal.\n\n\nAbstract: Given the massive scale of modern ML models\, we now only get a single shot to train them effectively. This restricts our ability to test multiple architectures and hyper-parameter configurations. Instead\, we need to understand how these models scale\, allowing us to experiment with smaller problems and then apply those insights to larger-scale models. In this talk\, I will present a framework for analyzing scaling laws in stochastic learning algorithms using a power-law random features model\, leveraging high-dimensional probability and random matrix theory. I will then use this scaling law to address the compute-optimal question: How should we choose model size and hyper-parameters to achieve the best possible performance in the most compute-efficient manner?

SUMMARY:Presentation:Online Adaptation for Safe Control of Constrained Dynamical Systems
DESCRIPTION:Chair: Prof. Dimitra Panagou\n\nAbstract:\nAdvances in sensing modalities and computational power have led to the prospect of a widespread deployment of robots in our society. Central to this objective is developing control and navigation stacks that avoid conservatism\, presumed to be measured by a performance metric\, while being provably and practically safe. A crucial element that must be accounted for is that controllers\, which are typically designed for and tuned in laboratory or highly monitored industrial settings for a specific scenario\, may experience a drop in performance and lose their safety guarantees when used elsewhere. It is of paramount importance therefore to import robots with the capability to adapt their controllers online to customize responses to a priori untested environments.\n\nIn this dissertation\, I present (1) tools to adapt any parametric controller using a model-based approach to achieve simultaneous satisfaction of multiple state constraints and enhanced performance\; (2) a numerical scheme for predicting future state distributions in systems governed by stochastic dynamics with state-dependent disturbances\, which can be utilized in model-predictive approaches\; and (3) a method to assist decision-making on dropping (disregarding) constraints when it is not feasible to satisfy all constraints simultaneously.\n\nA significant part of the dissertation also focuses on a specific safety-critical control method - control barrier functions (CBF). The CBF-based controllers have garnered interest in recent years due to their ease of implementation. However\, finding a theoretically valid CBF remains a challenge and in practice\, they are prone to performance degradation and safety violations\, especially when multiple CBFs are imposed together. This dissertation introduces a new notion of CBFs\, called Rate-Tunable CBFs\, that allows for time-varying parameters in theory and online tuning in practice.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Special Interdisciplinary QC-CM Seminar | Unveiling the Nexus Between Real and Momentum Space Skyrmion in Correlated Systems
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will explore the emergent physics resulting from the complex interaction between real-space and momentum-space topology in strongly correlated quantum materials\, with a particular focus on skyrmions. Using quantum Hall and quantum spin Hall insulators as key examples\, I will explain the mechanisms behind skyrmion formation through electron doping in these correlated and gapped topological systems. We provide a detailed analysis of the phase diagrams and the formation of skyrmion lattices within the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model\, supported by calculations from both the unrestricted real-space Hartree-Fock and density matrix renormalization group methods. In these systems\, the doped electron and skyrmion form a composite object whose density is governed by the doped electron density. This electron-skyrmion bound state is stabilized by the coupling between the orbital magnetization of the Chern band and the emergent magnetic flux generated by the skyrmion. Moreover\, we find that doping induces quantum anomalous Hall crystals\, which exhibit quantized Hall conductance and broken translational symmetry. Our theory offers an intrinsic mechanism for the experimentally observed robust quantum anomalous Hall insulator over an extended doping range near a filling factor of ν = 1 in twisted transition metal moiré superlattices.\n\nReference: Miguel Gonçalves and Shi-Zeng Lin\, arXiv:2407.12198\n\nShort-bio:\nShizeng Lin completed his Ph.D. at the National Institute for Materials Science and the University of Tsukuba in Japan. After earning his Ph.D.\, he joined Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in 2011\, initially as a postdoctoral researcher in the Theoretical Division. In 2014\, he was appointed as a scientist at LANL. He is also currently affiliated with the Center for Integrated Nanotechnology at LANL\, one of the five Nanoscale Science Research Centers funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. Lin’s research primarily focuses on theoretical studies of novel quantum materials\, with a particular emphasis on systems characterized by correlation and topology. He received the LANL Laboratory-Directed Research and Development Program Early Career Award in 2017 and the LANL Fellows Prize for Outstanding Research in 2024.

DESCRIPTION:\"XRISM – A New Window into the X-ray Universe\"\n\nAt 23:42 UTC on September 6th\, 2023\, the X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) lifted off from Tanegashima Space Center in Japan\, ushering in a new era of high-energy astrophysics. XRISM\, an international JAXA/NASA collaboration including participation from ESA\, is an advanced X-ray observatory capable of carrying out a science program that will address some of the most important questions in astrophysics in the 2020s. XRISM is essentially a rebuild of the Hitomi (Astro-H) spacecraft that was lost due to an operational mishap early in the mission in 2016. Resolve\, the primary instrument on XRISM\, is a high-resolution\, non-dispersive X-ray spectrometer operating between 0.3-12 keV\, providing high-resolution (~5 eV) spectroscopic capabilities in this critical energy band with a response peaking around the ubiquitous 6.4 keV Fe K-alpha line. A wide-field imager\, Xtend\, will offer simultaneous coverage over nearly a 40’ square field of view\, with ~1’ spatial resolution. XRISM will study all manner of astrophysical objects\, including galaxies and clusters\, AGN\, X-ray binaries\, supernova remnants\, transient phenomena\, stars\, and the interstellar medium. In this talk\, I will highlight some of the scientific topics that XRISM will address\, in addition to providing a general status update on the mission. I will discuss the synergies between high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy and observations at other wavelengths\, including optical\, radio\, and IR\, and summarize the General Observer program\, where funding is available for observers based at U.S. institutions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:34th Annual Davis\, Markert\, Nickerson Lecture on Academic and Intellectual Freedom
DESCRIPTION:SPEAKER: JUDITH BUTLER\nNovember 14\, 2024\n4:00-5:30 P.M.\n100 Hutchins Hall\n(Zoom link coming soon)\n\nThe annual Davis\, Markert\, Nickerson Lecture on Academic and Intellectual Freedom is named for three U-M faculty members—Chandler Davis\, Clement Markert\, and Mark Nickerson—who in 1954 were called to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. All invoked constitutional rights and refused to answer questions about their political associations. The three were suspended from the University with subsequent hearings and committee actions resulting in the reinstatement of Markert\, an assistant professor who eventually gained tenure\, and the dismissal of Davis\, an instructor\, and Nickerson\, a tenured associate professor.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:DE Seminar: Existence of Rotating Stars with Variable Entropy
DESCRIPTION:Rotating stars can be modeled by steady solutions to the Euler-Poisson equations. An extensive literature has established the existence of rotating stars for given differentially rotating angular velocity profiles. However\, all of the existing results require the angular velocity to depend on the distance to the rotation axis\, but not on the distance to the equatorial plane. Incidentally\, all of these solutions have constant entropy within the star. In this talk\, I will present a recent result which is the first that allows a general rotation profile\, without restrictions. It is also the first result that allows genuinely changing entropy within the star. The variation of entropy causes the previous methods used to construct steady solutions inapplicable. We discover a div-curl reformulation of the problem and perform analysis on the resulting elliptic-hyperbolic system. This is joint work with Juhi Jang and Walter Strauss.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Quotas and the President: Jewish Inclusion and Exclusion at UM in the 1920s
DESCRIPTION:When new University of Michigan president C.C. Little arrived in Ann Arbor in 1925\, American universities were in the midst of a great transition\, revamping their admission systems to limit the number of Jewish students on their campuses. Professor Karla Goldman will discuss the status of Jewish students at Michigan during this period and how President Little\, well known as a eugenicist\, actually resisted some of the racist and antisemitic assumptions of his time. His tenure illustrates the long and complicated history of inclusion and exclusion at U-M and in American higher education.\n\nKarla Goldman is the Sol Drachler Professor of Social Work and Professor of Judaic Studies at the University of Michigan where she also directs the Jewish Communal Leadership Program. Her research focuses on the history of American Jewish experience with special attention to history of varied Jewish communities and the evolving roles and identities of American Jewish women. She previously taught at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati and served as historian in residence at the Jewish Women’s Archive in Boston. She is the author of Beyond the Synagogue Gallery: Finding a Place for Women in American Judaism (Harvard University Press\, 2000).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Rep Stability/Comm Alg Seminar: Stabilization of infinite powers of varieties of tensors
DESCRIPTION:Draisma proved that infinite dimensional varieties of tensors\, defined uniformly with respect to the base vector space\, are topologically Noetherian up to the action of the general linear group. The infinite power Z^N of a finite dimensional variety Z is ring-theoretically Noetherian up to the action of the infinite symmetric group permuting the copies of Z. We show that infinite powers of infinite dimensional varieties of tensors are defined set-theoretically by the Sym x GL-orbits of finitely many equations. This talk will browse these results.\nJoint work with Chiu\, Draisma\, Eggermont\, and Farooq.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student DGT
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The Ping-Pong Lemma is a well known statement in geometric group theory which lets us prove a group Γ is free by finding subsets of a space X which Γ acts on that meet certain conditions. I will be discussing a recent generalization of the ping pong lemma in the context of group actions on projective space. Using this result I will describe an algorithm which can calculate explicit bounds on the size of the kernel of a representation of certain finitely generated groups into SL(2\, R).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Topology seminar: The Second Rational Homology of the Torelli Group
DESCRIPTION:The Torelli group is the subgroup of the mapping class group of a surface acting trivially on the first homology of the surface. The first rational homology of the Torelli group is known for a closed surface of genus 2 by work of Mess\, and for closed surfaces of genus at least 3 by work of Johnson. We will discuss forthcoming work with Putman that computes the second rational homology of the Torelli group for all closed surfaces of genus at least 6. In particular\, we will show that this homology group is an algebraic representation of the symplectic group. Combined with the work of Kupers and Randal-Williams\, this partially resolves Church and Farb's conjecture that the rational homology of the Torelli group is representation stable over the symplectic group.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Penny Stamps Speaker Series - Fernando Laposse
DESCRIPTION:Fernando Laposse specializes in transforming humble natural materials into refined design pieces. He has worked extensively with overlooked plant fibers such as sisal\, loofah\, and corn leaves. Laposse’s works are the result of extensive research which culminates in objects of “endemic design” where materials and their historical and cultural ties to a particular location and its people take center stage. He often works with indigenous communities in his native Mexico to create local employment opportunities and raise awareness about the challenges they face in a globalized world.\nLaposse’s projects are informative and educational and touch on topics such as sustainability\, the loss of biodiversity\, community dissolution\, migration\, and the negative impacts of global trade in local agriculture and food culture. He does so by documenting the issues and announcing possible resolutions through the transformative power of design.\nLaposse’s projects have been exhibited in the Triennale di Milano\, the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum\, The Design Museum in London\, the Victoria and Albert Museum\, and the World Economic Forum\, among others. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Design Museum Gent\, Le centre national des arts plastiques\, Musée des Arts Décoratifs\, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, the National Gallery of Victoria\, and the Victoria &amp\; Albert Museum. Laposse studied at Central Saint Martins in London as a product designer and currently lives and works in Mexico City.\nPresented in partnership with Design Core Detroit. This project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan.\nSeries presenting partners: Detroit PBS and PBS Books. Media partner: Michigan Radio.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:November Book Club | The Palace of Eros
DESCRIPTION:Attend the November session of our monthly Kelsey Book Club! This event is open to all adults who have an interest in fiction\, mythology\, and the ancient world. Learn more about this program at https://myumi.ch/Drn1Q. \n\nThis month\, we are reading *The Palace of Eros* by Caro De Robertis. A recent release\, the novel was featured in *Electric Literature*’s “65 Queer Books You Need to Read in Summer 2024.” The Palace of Eros reimagines the Greek myth of Psyche and Eros through a feminist and queer lens. Psyche—pursued by many but longing for freedom—is tied to a rock as a sacrifice to appease Aphrodite. But rather than meeting destruction\, she is saved by the nonbinary deity of desire Eros\, who whisks her away to a hidden palace safe from the eyes and authority of Olympus. As Psyche and Eros fall in love\, their relationship is tested by the complexities of secrecy\, freedom\, and desire—and met with transformative consequences. \n\nJoin us in Room 125 of Newberry Hall for an evening of community and conversation led by Gabriel Key\, a PhD candidate in the Interdepartmental Program in Ancient Mediterranean Art and Archaeology. Light refreshments will be served. \n\n*Note: Registration for this session is now closed. Visit our book club web page to learn about future meetings: https://myumi.ch/Drn1Q.*

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Chamber Music Forum: Nikolaas Kende\, piano and Jolente De Maeyer\, violin
DESCRIPTION:The Departments of Chamber Music and Piano present this Belgian piano/violin duo in a master class\, coaching U-M students on the performance of piano chamber music.\n\nGUEST ARTIST BIOS\n\nOne of the leading Belgian violinists\, JOLENTE De MAEYER\, has brought her virtuosity and passionate interpretations to diverse global audiences. She is recognized as an exceptionally gifted artist\, reflected in the numerous awards and effusive reviews she has received for both her live performances and recordings.\n\nPrizewinner of several international competitions in Portugal (Cardona Competition)\, Russia (Liana Issakadze Competition) and London (Benjamin Britten Competition)\, the international career of Jolente started with a successful participation at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels. Performances with all major Belgian orchestras and concert tours in Europe and the United States followed. She made her debut in Florida\, Vermont\, California\, Washington DC and Canada in 2017. This was followed by an extensive tour in South Africa. Future engagements include concert tours in Europe\, Canada\, United States and China.\n\nHer recordings include concerti by Saint-Saëns and Vieuxtemps with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège with Christian Arming\, awarded an ‘Editors Choice’ from Diapason\, and the CD *Kreutzer Sonata* with duo partner Nikolaas Kende\, awarded a ‘Gold Label’ from Klassiek Centraal.\n \nAfter an invitation from Yehudi Menuhin when she was 14 years old\, Jolente studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School near London. She continued her studies in London\, Berlin and Waterloo where she graduated in the class of Augustin Dumay in 2013.\n\nSince 2018 Jolente is professor violin at the Conservatory of Tilburg\, the Netherlands and since 2021 also at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp. Jolente has given masterclasses in Belgium\, Germany\, Italy\, Texas and California.\n\n \n“Poet in every inch of his fingers” - *Le Progres*\n\nNIKOLAAS KENDE has been praised for his poetic playing and honest\, passionate musicality. Critics have honored his sensitive and visionary musicianship and his flawless skills always serving the music. Both as soloist and chamber musician he is a highly demanded pianist on international concert stages.\n\nA winner of several competitions\, including the Cantabile\, EPTA\, Vriendenkrans Concertgebouw Amsterdam and Tenuto competitions\, Nikolaas started performing in all major halls in Belgium and the Netherlands. Highlights included the performances of the piano concertos by Brahms\, Beethoven\, Chopin\, Schumann and Bartok with Brussels Philharmonic\, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra\, National Radio Orchestra Romania\, among others.\n\nAfter a concert at the Festival de Dansa y Musica Granada in 2019 *Ideal* wrote: \"This promising pianist caresses the keyboard\, expressive with colors and tender with the melody and all the degrees of affection that typify the romantic soul.\"\n\nBesides being a regular guest at the Festival of Flanders\, he has also performed at festivals in Italy (Ravello\, Rome\, Bari)\, France (Menton\, Montpellier\, Vexin)\, Portugal (Coimbra)\, Germany (Görlitz\, Munich\, Bad Berleburg) \, Austria (Salzburg)\, Ireland (Westport)\, UK (Cotswolds)\, Czech Republic (Prague)\, Spain (Zaragoza\, Madrid).\n\nNikolaas made his debut in America in 2009 with the 1st piano concerto of Brahms. In 2019 amongst others his debut for the 'Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts' in Chicago. His duo with violinist Jolente De Maeyer\, which exists for almost 20 years\, is often praised in the press for its exceptional synergy and harmony. The duo's debut CD *Kreutzer Sonata* was released by Warner and won a Golden Label from Klassiek Centraal for best chamber music album of 2016. De Standaard wrote about this: \"You want to listen to this captivating recital album again immediately after the last track.\" In 2020 their next CD *Remains* was released by Evil Penguin Records.\n\nNikolaas studied in Antwerp with his parents\, Heidi Hendrickx and Levente Kende\, in Amsterdam with Jan Wijn and in Munich and Fiesole with Elisso Virsaladze. In addition he studied with such artists as Murray Perahia\, Aldo Ciccolini and Radu Lupu.\n\nIn 2015\, Nikolaas was appointed professor of piano at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp. SUMMARY:Performance:Hänsel und Gretel
DESCRIPTION:A fairy-tale opera with a folk-inspired score\, Hänsel und Gretel – by German composer Engelbert Humperdinck\, with a libretto by his sister\, Adelheid Wette – has been loved by audiences of all ages since its first performance in 1893. This production\, situated in the 1970s with echoes of classic TV shows The Brady Bunch and Bewitched\, emphasizes the darker undercurrents in the familiar tale of Hänsel and Gretel being sent into the forest by their frustrated mother. They gather berries and frolic in the woods\, soon realizing they are lost as darkness descends. In the morning\, Hänsel and Gretel spot an enticing house made of sugary cereal. As they nibble on the house\, a frightening witch appears from within and captures the children\, threatening to fatten Hansel up and use him to make confections. The clever children must keep their wits about them to avoid a fiery fate.\n\nComposed by Engelbert Humperdinck\; libretto by Adelheid Wette \nBased on the fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm\nConductor Kirk Severtson\nDirected by Gregory Keller\n

SUMMARY:Performance:Adam Ezra Group
DESCRIPTION:Spontaneous roots-based music that makes a connection\n\nWelcome to Adam Ezra Group\, who\, along with nonprofit organization RallySound\, host a free festival every summer that raised $143\,000 for homeless veterans in 2023. During the pandemic\, Adam live-streamed for 500 nights in a row. The group co-produced an album with 163 fans\, and Adam takes a month out of each year to visit the living rooms of his fans around the country.\n\nIf you haven’t connected with Adam Ezra Group yet\, these are just a few examples to help understand how this underground\, Americana songwriter and his bandmates seem to have popped out of nowhere\, establishing a connection with their fans unlike any other\, and are suddenly selling out theaters throughout the Northeast. \nAdam Ezra will joke with you that while the “nowhere” part might be accurate\, nothing has ever just “popped” for this folk musician\, activist. Without resources\, connections\, or any kind of clue how the music world works\, Ezra began playing shows over 20 years ago. He played bars\, bookstores\, fields\, and parking lots\, often raising money for causes he cared about\; a practice that grew into his nonprofit organization RallySound. \n\nSo how did this band operating so far outside the traditional music world come to win New England Music Award’s “Americana Act of the Year” in 2023? What could have happened to inspire John Oates to call Adam and invite him to begin a songwriting friendship that would lead to John producing their upcoming release and co-write\, “Hold Each Other Now”? What happened to catch the attention of The Wallflowers\, who recently invited AEG to join them on their spring tour\, or SPIN Magazine who recently proclaimed\, “This Independent Underground Folk Band Is Blowing Up Without Selling Out”? \n\nIf you ask Adam\, he’ll tell you: “One person at a time\, over many years and thousands of shows\, decided to turn their heads to listen… It’s no fairytale\, but it sure makes me proud and humbled when I look out from the stage to watch theaters full of people singing along to our music.”\n\nThese days you’ll find Adam and his bandmates\, Corinna Smith (Fiddle)\, Poche Ponce (Bass)\, and Alex Martin (Percussion)\, constantly out on the road. If you look at their tour schedule now\, you can buy tickets to see them at festivals\, rock venues\, and theaters around the country\, but you will also see their tour continuously peppered with activism and grassroots events\; a testament to an artist who will never forget where he came from\, and whose mission is about much more than music.\n\nhttps://www.adamezra.com/\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/5059/5060 for more detail.
