SUMMARY:Exhibition:Making it: $napshots from the Artist Pay Project
DESCRIPTION:The Artist Pay Project is an anonymous journalistic series that examines how artists survive and thrive through anonymous money diaries. Developed by 2022-2023 Knight-Wallace and the Ford School's Center for Racial Justice Fellow Makeda Easter\, the series includes interviews with over 30 artists from various disciplines — including visual arts\, dance\, film\, and drag — to understand how much artists are paid for their work\, how work is priced\, and how artists feel about their overall financial security. Making it: $napshots from the Artist Pay Project by Makeda Easter is a visually-immersive\, physical manifestation of this work\, advocating for both the value of art in our society and higher wages for working artists. \n\nMaking it: $napshots from the Artist Pay Project is sponsored by the U-M Arts Initiative and Impact Studio.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Steve Glazer Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glazer earned his BFA in art with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University\, a master’s degree in art from Central Michigan University\, and MFA in fine arts and ceramics from Indiana State University. Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. After returning home to Detroit\, Glazer began his griot series\, the “Motor City Griot Society” masks\, the faces of the superheroes that will save Detroit\, and more recently the “Motor City Griot Patrol” creatures that will protect the city of Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Susan Moran Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Susan Moran’s work is inspired by the natural world and our place in it. She collects and arranges images\, builds and subtracts\, and uses processes that suit the concepts and gives the pieces a reason for existing as textiles. Simultaneously she strives to make the medium influence the outcome in such a way that cloth and image meld together. Moran uses silkscreen\, shibori\, and stitching to embed images from her daily walks into the fabric. it's important that the work builds slowly\, involving meditative processes that connect her to the cloth and the source of the design.\n\nGallery hours: Monday-Friday\, 9 am to 5pm or by appointment serrag@med.umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Touch
DESCRIPTION:Ericka Lopez is a visual artist born in Mexico and living in Los Angeles. Lopez lost her sight at an early age and is mostly non-verbal. This exhibition of tactile assemblage works and gestural coiled pots were created by the artist through touch and texture\, colored by memory. The works are sensory\, physical\, immediate\, reaffirming\, and deeply expressive. Viewers to this exhibition are invited to touch the work. \n\nDuring her residency\, the artist and her support team\, which includes her mother and translator\, will engage directly with students in the exhibition space\, offering a transformative experience based on human expression and connection through art. Because Ericka feels most comfortable when she is working\, she plans to make artwork with students as part of the class engagements with the exhibition.\n\nAbout Ericka Lopez\nBorn 1987 in Mexico\, Ericka Lopez has been making art at Tierra del Sol Studios since 2019. Working across ceramic\, fiber\, and mixed media constructions\, Lopez’s practice is centralized around her exploration of touch. Lopez was born with limited vision and is now completely blind. Lopez trained in massage therapy and previously volunteered at a soup kitchen when an encounter with Tierra’s ceramics studio shifted her trajectory toward fine art. Her masterful command of clay hand-building techniques enables Lopez to create intricate\, dynamic\, and organically structured coil vessels. Lopez’s works are informed by her finite recollection of color\; she requests specific shades and combinations of glazes that generate spontaneous\, distinctive surfaces when fired. This intuitive approach continues in her fiber wall works and mixed media sculptures. Utilizing punch rug embroidery\, Lopez creates abstract fields of yarn and found objects\, often repeatedly punching through the same area to yield densely layered sections. Lopez has learned to identify the color of her materials via scent and feel\, a process that is difficult to put into words. Her mixed media sculptures are created almost entirely by touch\, consisting of threads\, buttons\, beads\, fabric scraps\, and found objects instinctively stitched together using simple sewing techniques. Lopez hopes her works can be experienced through an inquiry of touch.\n\nEricka Lopez has exhibited her artwork at Laband Gallery and Tierra del Sol Gallery in Los Angeles\, CA. Lopez’s debut solo exhibition\, “Continuous Touch\,” was curated by jill moniz for Tierra del Sol Gallery in the Spring of 2023. She has had works acquired by notable private collections such as that of Beth DeWoody and by the Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum at UC Long Beach.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Bookworm #73 - Author Conversation with Asheesh Kapur Siddique
DESCRIPTION:Asheesh Kapur Siddique is an assistant professor in the Department of History at UMass Amherst. He is a historian of early America\, early modern Europe\, and the British Empire whose research and pedagogy explore the role of collecting\, managing\, and using knowledge of the history of state formation and governance.  Professor Siddique’s first book\, The Archive of Empire: Knowledge\, Conquest\, and the Making of the Early Modern British World explores how modern data-driven government emerged out of the information order of the early modern state. It examines the central role of archives in the construction of the early modern British empire across the world in the 17th and 18th centuries\, and how encounters with cultural differences transformed the relationship between power and information.

DESCRIPTION:Login here (no pre-registration needed): https://tinyurl.com/ZellWriters24\n\nZell Visiting Writers Series readings and Q&As are free and open to the public and will be offered both virtually (via Zoom) and in person (in UMMA's Stern Auditorium). Seats are offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot.\n\nSawako Nakayasu says \"The Anti-Craft Lecture\" \"will [be] a loose and improvisational extended-utterance on the beloved tradition of writing against the grain of a fixed\, perfected\, polished\, beautiful\, or finely crafted poem\, in praise of poetry that is bad\, ugly\, unsellable\, punk\, incomplete\, mediocre\, unpublishable and of no discernible quality by standard measures.\"\n\nBorn in Japan and raised in the US\, Sawako Nakayasu is an artist working with language\, performance\, and translation. Her newest books of poetry include *Pink Waves* (Omnidawn\, 2023)\, a finalist for the PEN/Voelcker award\, and *Some Girls Walk Into The Country They Are From* (Wave Books\, 2020)\, both of which engage the intersection between writing and translation. *Settle Her*\, which was written on the #1 bus line in Providence\, Rhode Island on Thanksgiving Day of 2017 on the occasion of her cutting ties with normative Thanksgiving celebrations\, is forthcoming from Solid Objects. \n\n“Invisible Losses\,” a text-based performance\, was performed in 2023 as part of Translated Bodies\, a translation performance event curated by Gabrielle Civil at the Velocity Dance Center in Seattle. It has also been reimagined and published as a web-based work on oral.pub. Her pamphlet\, *Say Translation Is Art* (Ugly Duckling Presse\, 2020)\, which encourages the untethering of translated texts from conventional relationships to their source texts\, has been taught\, translated\, or performed in the US and in Europe – including as a spoken word performance by Danielle Zawadi in Dutch translation\, at the Dutch Foundation for Literature’s Annual Translation Convention in 2022. \n\nNakayasu’s translation of the Japanese modernist poet Sagawa Chika\, *The Collected Poems of Chika Sagawa*\, supported by the NEA and published by Canarium Books in 2015\, received the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation\, the Lucien Stryk Asian Translation Prize\, and was a finalist for the National Translation Award in Poetry. It was subsequently acquired by Penguin/Random House for their Modern Library series and republished in 2020 in a new edition with updated introduction. *Poet Sagawa Chika: Late Gathering*\, currently under development with the Brown Digital Publications Initiative\, is a born digital\, scholarly publication based on Sagawa’s poetry and legacy. \n\nNakayasu teaches in the Literary Arts department at Brown University\, where she teaches poetry\, translation\, and interdisciplinary art.\n\nFor any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs\, please email kimjulie@umich.edu--we are eager to help ensure that this event is inclusive to you. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Arbor Glyph
DESCRIPTION:Arbor Glyph is an installation centered around a collective painting of trees\, created by Stamps students and activated by a colorful projection repurposing hand-painted elements and bringing them to life. The goal of the exhibition is to foster collaboration among student artists and engage the Stamps community\, encouraging participation through a student painting party earlier this month\, with a focus on inclusion\, expression\, and finding solace in local landscapes. The Student-led Exhibition Committee (SEC) is a newly-formed group of students\, faculty\, and staff\, aiming to create more opportunities for undergrads to exhibit on campus. Arbor Glyph follows their Winter 2024 salon-style exhibition L'Assemblage in the Stamps Art &amp\; Architecture Building\, further developing students' experience planning extracurricular exhibitions by showing in the Stamps Gallery\, and taking a new approach to creating/curating artwork.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 13 – December 7\, 2024Opening Reception: September 19\, 2024\n\nKelly Church &amp\; Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue is a major exhibition that centers the subjectivities of two contemporary Indigenous artists whose practices have sustained and bolstered the relevance of the age-old Anishinaabe practice of black ash basket-making in the 21st century. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Together\, the exhibition offers an incisive critique of the colonial\, racist paradigm of systemic erasure and assimilation that continues to this day\, with the ongoing crises of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, culture wars\, and climate change that threaten Indigenous ways of living\, sustenance\, and making. \nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra with Curatorial Assistant Zoi Crampton.\nStamps Gallery is grateful to Michigan Humanities and U-M Arts Initiative for generously supporting the exhibition and programs.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Friday Lecture Series | Shifting Archipelago – Land Reclamation in Straits Settlements and British Borneo
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/7Pq8d\n\nThe islands in the Indo-Malay archipelago are constantly getting closer to one another due to land reclamation which began in earnest under colonial rule. Northern Borneo\, and the British Straits Settlements (Penang\, Melaka and Singapore) were reclaimed extensively but not in the same way due to different political and labor configurations. British\, Japanese and other European private enterprise financed the bulk of land reclamation in the former while the colonial government paid for it in the latter entirely. Reclaimed land expanded Singapore’s harbor and port facilities. Increase in rubber exports from the 1920s onwards prompted the British to finance land reclamation in Southeast Asia.\n \n Nurfadzilah Yahaya is an Assistant Professor of History at Yale University. She received her BA (2003) and MA (2006) from the National University of Singapore\, and her PhD (2012) in History from Princeton University. Before coming to Yale\, she taught at the National University of Singapore. From 2012 to 2015\, she was the Mark Steinberg Weil Early Career Fellow in Islamic Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. Nurfadzilah Yahaya specializes in history of Southeast Asia\, Indian Ocean history\, legal history\, history of infrastructure\, and environmental history. Her first book\, Fluid Jurisdictions: Colonial Law and Arabs in Southeast Asia (Cornell University Press\, 2020\; paperback 2022) demonstrates how colonial subjects entrenched European colonial legalities in British and Dutch territories in Southeast Asia by playing several jurisdictions against one another from the mid-nineteenth century onwards. Drawing on archival sources in Malay\, French\, Arabic\, Dutch and English\, she reconstructs family\, religious\, bureaucratic\, and commercial legal orders across the Indian Ocean.\n \n Yahaya’s current book project ‘Overflow: History of Land Reclamation in the British Empire in the Twentieth Century’ lies at the intersection of environmental history\, urban history\, science and technology studies\, legal history\, and history of infrastructure.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at cseas@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:FSML Lecture Series: Global Geomagnetic Perturbation Forecasting with Quantified Uncertainty using Deep Gaussian Process
DESCRIPTION:Venue: 2636 GGBA and \n\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/97823527756?pwd=H01BbvtuG5q02Wzb8LJvhUnvijlAIe.1\n\nAbstract:\nAccurately predicting the horizontal component of the ground magnetic field perturbation (dBH)\, as a proxy for Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GICs)\, is crucial for estimating the impact of geomagnetic storms and remains a topic under active investigation. The current state-of-the-practice Geospace model is computationally expensive for fine-grid global simulations\, while existing machine learning methods consistently tend to underestimate dBH. Additionally\, these models either lack uncertainty quantification (UQ) or provide UQ that lacks calibration. In this work\, as part of the NextGen SWMF project funded by NSF\, we develop a data-driven\, grid-free global model using deep Gaussian process (DGP)\, a Bayesian non-parametric approach that forecasts the dBH for the full surface of Earth with calibrated uncertainty. The model uses solar wind measurements and the Dst index as input\, and it is trained based on ground magnetometer station data provided by SuperMAG over the period 1995-2022. The model's predictions are evaluated based on the Heidke skill score (HSS) for a total of 22 geomagnetic storms in 2015. We further test the model on the 2024 May 10-12 storm. The results demonstrate that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art model\, with predictions exhibiting high accuracy in mid-latitudes and high-latitude regions in the northern hemisphere.\n\nBio:\nHongfan Chen is a third-year PhD student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan. His research interests include data assimilation\, uncertainty quantification\, and applications of machine learning in space weather.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Gentlemen’s Agreements: Applying Contemporary Archaeological Ethics in an Archival Setting
DESCRIPTION:Since 2008\, the Michigan State University Excavations at Isthmia has been engaged in an effort to digitize and share openly the contents of its archive of archaeological information. In addition to complications common to all archival projects\, this effort has also encountered difficulties with sharing the evidence that has been generated according to decades-old traditions of archaeological fieldwork. Where today many academic institutions and professional organizations have established policies that protect individuals on archaeological projects\, these codes of ethics can only highlight moments in the past when such practices were not observed. Moreover\, they do not suggest a means of remedy or redress. Thus\, for archival archaeologists\, simple questions of intellectual property\, publication rights\, and the transfer of copyright between institutional sponsors do not have easy answers. This paper discusses three examples of the challenges to observing contemporary academic ethics in an archival setting: the use of memoranda of understanding in (re)establishing publication rights\, the search for former project staff to establish intellectual property rights\, and the publication of unattributed archival materials in digital format. Hopefully\, these experiences will raise awareness of places where such older traditions remain in practice and in so doing\, show that archival archaeology can play a role in shaping future fieldwork as it looks critically at our methodological past.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:For the Long Haul: The Pandemic’s Impact on Practice Orientations and Labor Relations for Registered Nurses
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores how the COVID-19 pandemic has left enduring effects on registered nurses’ orientations toward their work and their relationships with employers. Drawing on interviews with nurses who remained in the profession\, the presentation moves beyond the conventional discourse of burnout to examine how the pandemic altered fundamental aspects of nursing practice\, career trajectories\, and organizational relationships. Through an analysis of these shifts\, the talk challenges traditional concepts of resilience and burnout\, suggesting that nurses may be redefining what it means to deliver care in a post-pandemic world.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: Corner Singularities: When and Where to Watch Out!
DESCRIPTION:Solutions to partial differential equations can exhibit singularities near non-smooth points of a domain\, even when the given data is smooth. Depending on the geometry of the domain\, corner singularities are among the most common singularities in practice\, and have been a significant focus of research in the computational community. In this talk\, we examine the prevalence of these singularities in mathematical modeling and demonstrate effective techniques to mitigate their impact in scientific computation\, including the characterization of corner singularities\, graded mesh algorithms\, and mixed methods for high-order problems.\n\nContact: Robert Krasny.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Alan J. Hunt Memorial Lecture-U-M Biomedical Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Engineering synthetic alternatives to biologics for medicine\nAbstract:\nBiologics\, products produced from living organisms\, have revolutionized treatment of disease. Examples of FDA-approved biologics include therapeutic proteins (e.g. blood clotting factors and antibodies)\, engineered viruses for gene therapy\, and cell therapies. Biologics are addressing previous unmet medical needs\, but are challenging to manufacture and therefore high in cost. In this talk\, I will describe our efforts to develop synthetic alternatives to biologics used in medicine. In the first example\, we develop synthetic polymers that facilitate hemostasis and resuscitation for trauma medicine. In a second example\, we synthesize a polymer that facilitates intracellular delivery of biologic cargo synthesized based on design principles learned from adenoviral vectors. In a final example\, we identify unique aptamers to replace antibodies used in cell therapy manufacturing.\nBio:\nSuzie H. Pun is the Washington Research Foundation Professor of Bioengineering\, Director for the Molecular Engineering and Sciences Institute\, and Associate Director of the Resuscitation Engineering Science Unit (RESCU) at University of Washington. She is a fellow of the U.S. National Academy of Inventors (NAI) and American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE)\, and has been recognized with MIT Technology Review’s “Top 100 Young Innovators” designation\, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers\, and as an AAAS-Lemelson Invention Ambassador. She was also recognized with the University of Washington’s Marsha Landolt Distinguished Graduate Mentor Award for her dedicated mentoring of students. She currently serves as an Associate Editor for ACS Biomaterials Science and Engineering and on the Science Board of Reviewing Editors.\n\nSuzie Pun received her B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University and her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology. She also worked as a senior scientist at Insert Therapeutics/Calando Pharmaceuticals developing polymeric drug delivery systems before joining the Department of Bioengineering at University of Washington. Her current work focuses on biomaterial applications in drug delivery and gene and cell therapy.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Department Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Department Colloquium featuring speaker: C. Thi Nguyen (Utah)\nNovember 15\, 2024\n2306 Mason Hall\, 3-5 PM\n\nTitle: The Social Function of Scoring Systems: Convergence Through Mechanicity\n\nAbstract: Scoring systems are social systems that function to produce convergence on a singular verdict. Games and institutions often use one particular type: a mechanical scoring systems. A game tells us exactly what gets us points\; a bureaucracy tells us exactly how our productivity will be measured. Strangely\, these mechanical scoring systems often inspire fun and free play in games – but in institutional life\, they drain the life out of everything. Why? Drawing from Lorraine Daston’s work on rules\, I offer a theory of the mechanical. A mechanical procedure is one where the procedures and criteria have been designed so as to be usable by anybody\, to yield consistent results. Mechanical scoring systems perform a valuable social function: they guarantee convergence of evaluations\, from those who have accepted the scoring system. They eliminate the possibility of disagreement among those who have agreed to abide by the scoring rules. To do this\, however\, such scoring systems need to strictly limit the kinds of criteria they can target. In games\, this can help us to become more fluid. But mechanical scoring systems perform a different function in institutions. Mechanical scoring systems are often used to make workers more replaceable. The demand for worker fungibility thus systematically shapes the kinds of targets and goals that can be enshrined in institutions. This opens the door for a kind of hermeneutical feedback loop\, whereby those agents who are willing to sacrifice all else\, in the pursuit of higher mechanical scores\, are rewarded with greater social power\, with they can use to heighten the social power of mechanical scoring systems.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Neural Networks\, Scaling Laws and Effective Field Theories
DESCRIPTION:Starting from simple curve fitting problems\, I will explain how modern AI works by learning a large number of features from data: wide neural networks fit data to linear combinations of many random features\, and stacking layers to form deep neural networks allows the features to evolve according to data. It has been empirically observed that the performance of neural networks scales as power laws with respect to the sizes of the model and training data set. I will discuss a recently proposed random feature model that captures the physics of neural scaling laws\, and its solution in an effective theory framework using large-N field theory methods. The solution reveals a duality that is indicative of a deeper connection between neural networks and field theories.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Smooth points on positroid varieties and planar N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory --- Combinatorics seminar
DESCRIPTION:Positroid varieties are subvarieties in the Grassmannian defined by cyclic rank conditions and which are related to Schubert varieties. We will provide a criterion for whether positroid varieties are smooth at certain distinguished points\, and we will show that this information is sufficient to determine smoothness for the entire positroid variety. This will involve looking at combinatorial diagrams called \"affine pipe dreams.\" We can also form a partial order on positroid varieties given by deletion and contraction\, such that there is closure for smooth positroid varieties\, and we will characterize the minimal singular elements in this order. Finally\, we will discuss a couple of connections between the techniques of this work and planar N=4 SYM: the BCFW bridge decomposition and inverse soft factors.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Algebraic Geometry: An Introduction to Period Domains
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we give an introduction to the theory of period domains and period integrals. For any compact Kähler manifold X\, the Hodge theorem gives a decomposition of the cohomology of X as the direct sum of complex vector spaces. Such a decomposition can be generalized to the notion of a Hodge structure\, which has an equivalent description in terms of the Hodge filtration. Our goal is to study these variations on Hodge structures by viewing this filtration through the lens of the Grassmannian and flag manifolds. We provide a concrete example where we show that the parameter space for the polarized Hodge structures of a compact Riemann surface of genus q is analytically isomorphic to the Siegel upper half space.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Uncertainty Propagation In Robot Perception
DESCRIPTION:Chair: Ram Vasudevan\nNovember 15\, 3pm\nFRB Atrium & Zoom\n\nAbstract\nAutonomous construction of shelters on Mars\, robotic assistants for life-saving surgeries\, and home robots integrated into our lives\, once viewed as science fiction\, will be attainable in the near-future thanks to advancements in robotics. A connecting thread between all these tasks\, and a source of numerous challenges\, is the inherent uncertainty in perceptual data. This dissertation considers how to manage rather than ignore perceptual uncertainty\, enabling the creation of safe\, robust\, and reliable systems that will allow robots to leave the lab and enter the world. This dissertation introduces four novel approaches for perceptual uncertainty quantification. The first is a means of computing geometric uncertainty for radiance field models. Second\, we propose a framework for estimating semantic uncertainty using vision and\, third\, we build off this framework to enable robots to use multiple sensing modalities such as vision and touch to update this semantic uncertainty. Lastly\, we propose a means of propagating uncertainty over Riemannian manifolds with guarantees on numerical accuracy and with applications for robotic state estimation. Combined\, these methods demonstrate a comprehensive means of quantifying uncertainty for robotic perception.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Roger Michaelides\, Washington University in St. Louis
DESCRIPTION:Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) is an active source microwave imaging technique capable of resolving fine-resolution deformation of the Earth’s surface at centimetric to millimetric precision. InSAR has been successfully used to generate high-resolution digital elevation models of the Earth’s surface topography\, measure crustal deformation associated with volcanic deformation\, post-seismic and co-seismic deformation\, ground motion associated with landsliding\, and glacial flow velocities. In recent years\, considerable developments have been made towards the study of permafrost freeze thaw and degradation from InSAR observations. In this talk\, I will present several techniques in the fields of InSAR and polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) that can be leveraged to resolve fundamental properties of permafrost and the active layer in periglacial landscapes\, with a focus on permafrost-wildfire interactions and surface hydrology. I will also discuss emerging methods of leveraging nuisance terms (e.g.\, interferometric phase noise\, phase nonclosure) for environmental retrievals of soil moisture\, vegetation canopy water content\, and wildfire burn severity.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture Series | Countering Misinformation Early: A Sustained Media Literacy Intervention for School Children in India
DESCRIPTION:As evidenced during the Covid-19 crisis\, medical misinformation and false beliefs in alternative treatments may have dramatic consequences\, especially among populations with low levels of digital literacy and education. This paper examines whether a sustained\, classroom-based media and information literacy intervention can help school children in Bihar\, India\, to become more discerning consumers of public health information. Collaborating with a branch of Bihar's state government\, we developed and fielded a multi-session media literacy RCT across 583 villages\, targeting over 12\,000 students. Unlike previous anti-misinformation interventions\, this project focuses on rural populations\, long-term engagement\, and adolescents aged 13 to 18. Results from intent-to-treat estimates demonstrate that our intervention had significant impacts on a number of counts: treated students showed heightened ability to discern between true and false information. Notably the intervention also changed health preferences\, diminishing reliance on alternative medical approaches and decreasing dependence on untrustworthy sources of news. We are able to detect effects up to 2 months post intervention\, speaking to the strength of the treatment in changing attitudes long-term. These findings hold significant implications for assessing the efficacy of media literacy measures in light of previous studies that often yield null or mixed results. Our intervention demonstrates continued effectiveness among a particularly challenging sample and difficult context.\n \n Sumitra Badrinathan is an assistant professor of political science at American University's School of International Service. Her research focuses on political communication in South Asia\, with an emphasis on new platforms like WhatsApp and their effects on political misinformation\, media trust\, and the quality of democracy. She uses experimental and survey methods to investigate potential solutions to misinformation in developing countries along with the consequences of misinformation on political and societal outcomes\, including violence\, vote choice\, polarization\, and social cohesion. Her work has appeared in academic journals such as the American Political Science Review as well as popular press such as The Washington Post. She received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania.\n \n *Made possible with the generous support of the Title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education.*\n\nFree and open to the public

SUMMARY:Performance:Hänsel und Gretel
DESCRIPTION:A fairy-tale opera with a folk-inspired score\, Hänsel und Gretel – by German composer Engelbert Humperdinck\, with a libretto by his sister\, Adelheid Wette – has been loved by audiences of all ages since its first performance in 1893. This production\, situated in the 1970s with echoes of classic TV shows The Brady Bunch and Bewitched\, emphasizes the darker undercurrents in the familiar tale of Hänsel and Gretel being sent into the forest by their frustrated mother. They gather berries and frolic in the woods\, soon realizing they are lost as darkness descends. In the morning\, Hänsel and Gretel spot an enticing house made of sugary cereal. As they nibble on the house\, a frightening witch appears from within and captures the children\, threatening to fatten Hansel up and use him to make confections. The clever children must keep their wits about them to avoid a fiery fate.\n\nComposed by Engelbert Humperdinck\; libretto by Adelheid Wette \nBased on the fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm\nConductor Kirk Severtson\nDirected by Gregory Keller\n

SUMMARY:Performance:University Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Kenneth Kiesler\, conductor\n\nPROGRAM\n\nBeethoven\, Symphony No. 1\nShostakovich\, Chamber Symphony\nProkofiev\, Classical Symphony\n\nThe University Symphony Orchestra\, led by its music director Kenneth Kiesler\, presents an evening of three contrasting firsts. In their first symphonies\, Beethoven and Prokofiev each take the symphony of Mozart and Haydn through some new twists and turns\, both with a sense of humor and playfulness. Shostakovich’s first chamber symphony\, a string orchestra version of his Eighth String Quartet\, was written in three days and dedicated to the victims of fascism and war. As it tells his own story in quotes from several of his previous pieces and by using his own initials as notes\, it’s clear that he was one of them! This powerful and deeply personal music is quite a contrast from the witty and entertaining symphonies of Beethoven and Prokofiev.
