SUMMARY:Exhibition:Making it: $napshots from the Artist Pay Project
DESCRIPTION:The Artist Pay Project is an anonymous journalistic series that examines how artists survive and thrive through anonymous money diaries. Developed by 2022-2023 Knight-Wallace and the Ford School's Center for Racial Justice Fellow Makeda Easter\, the series includes interviews with over 30 artists from various disciplines — including visual arts\, dance\, film\, and drag — to understand how much artists are paid for their work\, how work is priced\, and how artists feel about their overall financial security. Making it: $napshots from the Artist Pay Project by Makeda Easter is a visually-immersive\, physical manifestation of this work\, advocating for both the value of art in our society and higher wages for working artists. \n\nMaking it: $napshots from the Artist Pay Project is sponsored by the U-M Arts Initiative and Impact Studio.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Asian American High School Conference
DESCRIPTION:High School Conference (HSC) is a free\, one-day conference held at the University of Michigan that aims to help Asian American (AsAm) high school students explore their identity\, gain insight into college life\, and meet fellow peers in the AsAm and PI community.\n\nThis year\, our conference theme is “Choose Your Own Adventure” through which we hope to inspire students to create their own path as they level up into a new phase of their lives. We encourage students to explore their identities and possible career paths through interactive events and workshops offered at the conference. This year’s theme highlights retro video games\, evoking a sense of belonging to one’s past and encouraging students to explore and carry cultural heritage with them as they move forward. There will also be performances from a variety of organizations on campus!\n\nAsAm HSC is a legacy program for high school students within the United Asian American Organizations (UAAO). Registration is required. The Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs is a co-sponsor and helps advise the planning committee as needed.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sea++ : An audio and visual experience
DESCRIPTION:*Sea++* is an immersive audio-visual experience hosted in the Davis Studio of the Moore Building on November 16 from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. Within the space\, a digital ocean fills the room\, dotted with flickering CRT TVs and other relics of outdated technology. The atmosphere feels familiar yet strikingly new\, as if the virtual world of files\, memories\, and programs stored in the Cloud has seeped into our physical realm. It’s calm and expansive\, though hints of instability surface unexpectedly.\n\nVisitors can engage with various elements of the exhibit via the website (accessible through a QR code at the entrance) and interact through motion capture technology. \n\n*May contain flashing lights*\n\nThe exhibition will open with a live performance by SMTD musicians from 10:00 am to 11:30 am.\n\nCreated by Jason Zhang with support from U-M ArtsEngine.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Arbor Glyph
DESCRIPTION:Arbor Glyph is an installation centered around a collective painting of trees\, created by Stamps students and activated by a colorful projection repurposing hand-painted elements and bringing them to life. The goal of the exhibition is to foster collaboration among student artists and engage the Stamps community\, encouraging participation through a student painting party earlier this month\, with a focus on inclusion\, expression\, and finding solace in local landscapes. The Student-led Exhibition Committee (SEC) is a newly-formed group of students\, faculty\, and staff\, aiming to create more opportunities for undergrads to exhibit on campus. Arbor Glyph follows their Winter 2024 salon-style exhibition L'Assemblage in the Stamps Art &amp\; Architecture Building\, further developing students' experience planning extracurricular exhibitions by showing in the Stamps Gallery\, and taking a new approach to creating/curating artwork.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 13 – December 7\, 2024Opening Reception: September 19\, 2024\n\nKelly Church &amp\; Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue is a major exhibition that centers the subjectivities of two contemporary Indigenous artists whose practices have sustained and bolstered the relevance of the age-old Anishinaabe practice of black ash basket-making in the 21st century. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Together\, the exhibition offers an incisive critique of the colonial\, racist paradigm of systemic erasure and assimilation that continues to this day\, with the ongoing crises of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, culture wars\, and climate change that threaten Indigenous ways of living\, sustenance\, and making. \nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra with Curatorial Assistant Zoi Crampton.\nStamps Gallery is grateful to Michigan Humanities and U-M Arts Initiative for generously supporting the exhibition and programs.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Free Stuttering Film Screening: The King's Speech
DESCRIPTION:Join the U-M Speech Neurophysiology Lab and the Ann Arbor Stuttering Awareness and Research Club (A2STAR) for a stuttering-focused panel and film screening at Ann Arbor's iconic State Theatre.\n\nStuttering is a speech disorder characterized by repetition of sounds\, syllables\, or words. Stuttering affects approximately 1% of the general population and 5-8% of preschool-aged children. The cause of stuttering remains unknown\, and treatment options are limited.\n\nWhile research is beginning to slowly uncover the mysteries of this condition\, many myths persist. Media depictions of stuttering are often inaccurate and harmful\, portraying characters who stutter as anxious\, shy\, weak\, awkward\, or just plain evil. \n\nJoin us for a film screening and panel discussion that pushes back against these stereotypes\, shedding light on the condition through the experiences of those who live with stuttering\, as well as those who are researching its causes. Panelists will include members of the Ann Arbor Stuttering Awareness and Research Club (A2STAR) as well as experts from the U-M Speech Neurophysiology Lab. Their insights will educate about stuttering\, helping to deepen appreciation of the critically-acclaimed film The King's Speech which tells the story of King George VI\, his unexpected ascension to the throne of the British Empire in 1936\, and the speech therapist who helped him navigate his stutter.

SUMMARY:Performance:Hänsel und Gretel
DESCRIPTION:A fairy-tale opera with a folk-inspired score\, Hänsel und Gretel – by German composer Engelbert Humperdinck\, with a libretto by his sister\, Adelheid Wette – has been loved by audiences of all ages since its first performance in 1893. This production\, situated in the 1970s with echoes of classic TV shows The Brady Bunch and Bewitched\, emphasizes the darker undercurrents in the familiar tale of Hänsel and Gretel being sent into the forest by their frustrated mother. They gather berries and frolic in the woods\, soon realizing they are lost as darkness descends. In the morning\, Hänsel and Gretel spot an enticing house made of sugary cereal. As they nibble on the house\, a frightening witch appears from within and captures the children\, threatening to fatten Hansel up and use him to make confections. The clever children must keep their wits about them to avoid a fiery fate.\n\nComposed by Engelbert Humperdinck\; libretto by Adelheid Wette \nBased on the fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm\nConductor Kirk Severtson\nDirected by Gregory Keller\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:John Ellis: \"The Pedagogical Writings of Marguerite Long: A Reassessment of Her Impact on the French School of Piano\"
DESCRIPTION:This lecture celebrates the work of Dr. John Ellis\, winner of the 2024 Harold Haugh Award which recognizes excellence in private studio teaching at the School of Music\, Theatre & Dance. Ellis is professor of piano at SMTD\, director of Graduate Studies in Piano Pedagogy and administers the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program.\n\nSMTD BIO:\nhttps://smtd.umich.edu/profiles/john-ellis/\n\nProf. Ellis will present his research into Marguerite Long\, the most important French female pianist of the 20th century\, who left her stamp on a whole epoch of musical life in Paris. His book on the topic\, *The Pedagogical Writings of Marguerite Long: A Reassessment of Her Impact on the French School of Piano*\, is published by Indiana University Press.\n\nEllis's work presents English translations of the two major contributions of Marguerite Long to the literature of piano pedagogy. These translations of her pedagogical works\, *Le Piano* and *La Petite Méthode de piano*\, provide a window to the old French school of pianism as modernized by Long. *Le Piano* is a remarkable text offering piano playing techniques and pragmatic and philosophical musings and observations about life\, musicians\, careers\, and more. *La Petite Méthode de piano* is a personal manifesto about how to introduce children to music. Both works are treasures revealing Long's lifelong commitment to teaching and they are still stunningly relevant.\n\nIn addition\, Prof. Ellis analyzes each work and puts it in historical context. He places special emphasis on Long's illustrious international career\, her teaching\, her rivalry with Alfred Cortot\, and the impact of sexism on her life and work. Ellis addresses the eclipse of Long's reputation by that of Cortot and fills a gap in the knowledge of Long's place in the history of pedagogical heritage.\n\nThis lecture and demonstration represents Prof. Ellis's longstanding interest in comparative pedagogy with an international perspective.

SUMMARY:Performance:Tall Heights
DESCRIPTION:New music!\n\nTall Heights wants to share a moment with you. A moment in New England\, a moment on Earth. With their 2024 release\, Softly Softly\, Paul Wright (cello/vocals) and Tim Harrington (guitar/vocals) reject isolation\; both the universal experience of the early 2020s\, and its sound recording definition where different instruments are recorded separately. Harrington explains\, \"The opposite of isolation in recording is bleed\, where you hear the drums and guitar through the vocal mic because everything is happening in the same room. It's risky because you can't easily change it later. You're stuck with whatever you get. Bleeding is just the perfect word for it. It's scary and it sometimes hurts.\"\n\nAfter the pandemic\, Ben Folds invited the Boston-based duo to Nashville to make his latest album\, \"What Matters Most\" (New West 2023). Following this month-long apprenticeship under Folds\, Tall Heights became focused on records that testify to a specific place and time. They started drawing inspiration from classic Simon and Garfunkel albums like Bookends and Bridge Over Troubled Water. Their focus narrowed to \"something pretty simple actually\,\" Wright explains\, \"to capture a real moment with real people in an actual room.\"\n\nFor 10 days in rural Massachusetts\, the childhood friends captured brand new songs in an old fashioned way. The album maintains their unique vocal blend\, which has earned them nearly half a billion streams\, but it feels more spontaneous and timeless than their previous work. Softly Softly is out everywhere October 18\, 2024.
