Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. Lopez lost her sight at an early age and is mostly non-verbal. This exhibition of tactile assemblage works and gestural coiled pots were created by the artist through touch and texture\, colored by memory. The works are sensory\, physical\, immediate\, reaffirming\, and deeply expressive. Viewers to this exhibition are invited to touch the work. \n\nDuring her residency\, the artist and her support team\, which includes her mother and translator\, will engage directly with students in the exhibition space\, offering a transformative experience based on human expression and connection through art. Because Ericka feels most comfortable when she is working\, she plans to make artwork with students as part of the class engagements with the exhibition.\n\nAbout Ericka Lopez\nBorn 1987 in Mexico\, Ericka Lopez has been making art at Tierra del Sol Studios since 2019. Working across ceramic\, fiber\, and mixed media constructions\, Lopez’s practice is centralized around her exploration of touch. Lopez was born with limited vision and is now completely blind. Lopez trained in massage therapy and previously volunteered at a soup kitchen when an encounter with Tierra’s ceramics studio shifted her trajectory toward fine art. Her masterful command of clay hand-building techniques enables Lopez to create intricate\, dynamic\, and organically structured coil vessels. Lopez’s works are informed by her finite recollection of color\; she requests specific shades and combinations of glazes that generate spontaneous\, distinctive surfaces when fired. This intuitive approach continues in her fiber wall works and mixed media sculptures. Utilizing punch rug embroidery\, Lopez creates abstract fields of yarn and found objects\, often repeatedly punching through the same area to yield densely layered sections. Lopez has learned to identify the color of her materials via scent and feel\, a process that is difficult to put into words. Her mixed media sculptures are created almost entirely by touch\, consisting of threads\, buttons\, beads\, fabric scraps\, and found objects instinctively stitched together using simple sewing techniques. Lopez hopes her works can be experienced through an inquiry of touch.\n\nEricka Lopez has exhibited her artwork at Laband Gallery and Tierra del Sol Gallery in Los Angeles\, CA. Lopez’s debut solo exhibition\, “Continuous Touch\,” was curated by jill moniz for Tierra del Sol Gallery in the Spring of 2023. We have thus far focused in the nucleus on creating kilobase-resolution maps of higher-order folding of the chromatin fiber and understanding how classic epigenetic modifications work through long-range connections to govern genome function in neurodevelopment. We have developed and applied new molecular and computational technologies to elucidate chromatin folding patterns at kilobase-resolution genome-wide\, thus discovering that long-range looping interactions in cis and inter-chromosomal interactions in trans change substantially during neural lineage commitment\, somatic cell reprogramming\, activation of post-mitotic neural circuits\, and in neurological disorders. We have demonstrated that cohesin-mediated loops are necessary for the establishment of new gene expression programs in post-mitotic neurons\, including the upregulation of genes encoding axon guidance\, dendritic spine morphology\, and synaptic plasticity during neuron maturation in vivo as well as activity-dependent transcription during neural stimulation in vitro. We have also identified cohesin-mediated loops anchored by divergently-oriented CTCF binding sites that are necessary and sufficient for the firing efficiency and localization of human replication origins during S phase re-entry after mitosis. Using fragile X syndrome as a natural perturbation\, we have uncovered BREACHes (Beacons of Repeat Expansion Anchored by Contacting Heterochromatin) - rare inter-chromosomal interactions connecting heterochromatinized synaptic genes susceptible to repeat instability\, thus providing early insight into the genome’s structure-function relationship. Here\, I will present new unpublished data describing 3D genome miswiring in a human neuron model with rare familial Alzheimer’s mutations as well as the functional link among loops and activity-dependent gene expression during neural circuit activation in vitro and in vivo. The long-term goal of the Cremins lab is to elucidate how the genome’s structure-function relationship influences synaptic plasticity and neurophysiology during memory encoding and consolidation and how this goes awry in intractable neurological disorders. \n\nBio:\n\nJennifer Phillips-Cremins\, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor and Deans' Faculty Fellow in Engineering and Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania with primary appointments in the Departments of Genetics and Bioengineering. Dr. Cremins obtained her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in the laboratory of Andres Garcia. She conducted a multi-disciplinary postdoc in the laboratories of Job Dekker and Victor Corces. Dr. Cremins runs the Laboratory of Chromatin and Spatial Neurobiology at UPenn. Her primary research interests lie in understanding the long-range chromatin architecture mechanisms that govern neural specification and synaptic plasticity in healthy neurons and how chromatin-synapse communication is dysregulated in neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX). One motivation for this model is to describe black holes in Einstein gravity in higher dimensions. Indeed\, the equations of this model generalize an uncontrolled truncation of the BFSS model\, but correctly describe the large N limit of our model. The entropy at low energies has a non-trivial scaling with temperature\, with an exponent that we calculate\, and we will discuss additional unusual low temperature features in this model. We study the possibility of a spin glass phase which has been suggested in the past in a similar context. Political Anxieties in the Caucasus: the Georgian National Narrative Between War and Peace DESCRIPTION:Against the backdrop of Russian aggression in Ukraine and the renewed conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh\, anxiety about Georgia’s fate and its place in the region has taken over the quotidian life of ordinary people. Veiled as peace-preservation efforts\, Georgia’s ruling party has made a sweeping turn away from the country’s European course towards a Russian-style authoritarian rule. The waves of mass protests that surged in response to the government’s actions are part of the broader charged atmosphere in which national anxiety from being a small country shapes not only political rhetoric\, but the sense of ordinary life in Georgia. In this lecture\, Batiashvili explores the historical and cultural antecedents of the anxiety rooted in what Timothy Snyder calls the “deep narratives” of the region. Based on the ethnographic studies among politically active youth\, ethnic Armenians in Tbilisi\, and the community of Caucasian highlanders\, Batiashvili examines different facets of political and cultural anxiety that have prevailed in the Caucasus since the collapse of the Soviet Union.\n \n Nutsa Batiashvili is Professor of Anthropology\, Dean of the Graduate School\, and Director of the “Memory and Anxiety Research Lab” at the Free University of Tbilisi. She obtained her PhD in Anthropology from Washington University in St Louis\, and her MA and BA in Psychology from Tbilisi State University. Her current research focuses on the Caucasian Highlanders and ethnic Armenians in Tbilisi. Her collaborative research projects on \"The Anthropology of Anxiety\" and \"Memory and Anxiety\" have been funded by the Wenner-Gren Foundation\, James McDonnell Foundation\, Templeton Foundation\, and Georgian National Science Foundation. Her book \"The Bivocal Nation: Memory and Identity on the Edge of Empire\" (Palgrave Macmillan\, 2018) is about a divided nation and polarized notions of nationhood. Their unique capability to produce a highly reactive environment at moderate gas temperatures enables several emerging applications with the potential to contribute to health care and a sustainable future. Low temperature plasmas offer fertile ground for many interesting often multi-disciplinary fundamental studies with direct societal benefit. We will report on several fundamental case studies of interactions of plasmas with liquids\, bacteria\, virus and catalysts in the context of decontamination\, water treatment\, materials synthesis and chemical conversion. The case studies often involve a detailed comparison between diagnostics and modeling which allowed us to uniquely identify mechanisms and rate limiting steps. While these studies have often been conducted in highly controlled environments and with canonical reactor setups\, such studies provide insights that are critical for process development and might open the path towards a model of science driving technology development.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nPeter Bruggeman is a Distinguished McKnight University Professor and the Ernst Eckert Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota. His research is focused on low temperature plasma science and engineering with applications in health and sustainability. He also serves as the Director of Graduate Studies of Mechanical Engineering and the Director of the High Temperature and Plasma Laboratory. Peter was an Assistant Professor of Applied Physics at the Eindhoven University of Technology\, the Netherlands\, from 2009 until he joined the University of Minnesota in 2013. How could these men not have understood “the assignment”? While the election results may have shocked observers around the world\, winning a US election with the support of Latino voters is not new. It is a phenomenon that has been growing in ebbs and flows over the last twenty years since George W. Bush received 40 percent of the Latino vote to win the presidency in 2004. Since expanders are of great interest in mathematics and computer science\, Friedman's paper (which is ~100 pages long) has attracted a lot of attention in the last two decades and more efficient proofs of his result (which yield vast generalizations) have been found. However\, all the approaches to Friedman's theorem and its extensions relied on very delicate and sophisticated combinatorial considerations\, making it hard to apply those ideas to other settings of interest.\n\nIn this talk I will discuss a fundamentally new (analytic) approach to Friedman's theorem which yields an elementary proof that can be written in just a few pages. Our approach also allows us to establish strong convergence (i.e. sharp norm estimates) for much more general models of tuples of random matrices (random regular graphs corresponding to the particular case of adding independent random permutations). These results can be used to show that certain infinite objects admit very strong finite dimensional approximations\, which has important implications in operator algebras\, spectral geometry\, and differential geometry.\n\nThis is joint work with Chi-Fang Chen\, Joel Tropp\, and Ramon van Handel.
