SUMMARY:Exhibition:Making it: $napshots from the Artist Pay Project
DESCRIPTION:The Artist Pay Project is an anonymous journalistic series that examines how artists survive and thrive through anonymous money diaries. Developed by 2022-2023 Knight-Wallace and the Ford School's Center for Racial Justice Fellow Makeda Easter\, the series includes interviews with over 30 artists from various disciplines — including visual arts\, dance\, film\, and drag — to understand how much artists are paid for their work\, how work is priced\, and how artists feel about their overall financial security. Making it: $napshots from the Artist Pay Project by Makeda Easter is a visually-immersive\, physical manifestation of this work\, advocating for both the value of art in our society and higher wages for working artists. \n\nMaking it: $napshots from the Artist Pay Project is sponsored by the U-M Arts Initiative and Impact Studio.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Steve Glazer Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glazer earned his BFA in art with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University\, a master’s degree in art from Central Michigan University\, and MFA in fine arts and ceramics from Indiana State University. Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. After returning home to Detroit\, Glazer began his griot series\, the “Motor City Griot Society” masks\, the faces of the superheroes that will save Detroit\, and more recently the “Motor City Griot Patrol” creatures that will protect the city of Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Susan Moran Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Susan Moran’s work is inspired by the natural world and our place in it. She collects and arranges images\, builds and subtracts\, and uses processes that suit the concepts and gives the pieces a reason for existing as textiles. Simultaneously she strives to make the medium influence the outcome in such a way that cloth and image meld together. Moran uses silkscreen\, shibori\, and stitching to embed images from her daily walks into the fabric. it's important that the work builds slowly\, involving meditative processes that connect her to the cloth and the source of the design.\n\nGallery hours: Monday-Friday\, 9 am to 5pm or by appointment serrag@med.umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Touch
DESCRIPTION:Ericka Lopez is a visual artist born in Mexico and living in Los Angeles. Lopez lost her sight at an early age and is mostly non-verbal. This exhibition of tactile assemblage works and gestural coiled pots were created by the artist through touch and texture\, colored by memory. The works are sensory\, physical\, immediate\, reaffirming\, and deeply expressive. Viewers to this exhibition are invited to touch the work. \n\nDuring her residency\, the artist and her support team\, which includes her mother and translator\, will engage directly with students in the exhibition space\, offering a transformative experience based on human expression and connection through art. Because Ericka feels most comfortable when she is working\, she plans to make artwork with students as part of the class engagements with the exhibition.\n\nAbout Ericka Lopez\nBorn 1987 in Mexico\, Ericka Lopez has been making art at Tierra del Sol Studios since 2019. Working across ceramic\, fiber\, and mixed media constructions\, Lopez’s practice is centralized around her exploration of touch. Lopez was born with limited vision and is now completely blind. Lopez trained in massage therapy and previously volunteered at a soup kitchen when an encounter with Tierra’s ceramics studio shifted her trajectory toward fine art. Her masterful command of clay hand-building techniques enables Lopez to create intricate\, dynamic\, and organically structured coil vessels. Lopez’s works are informed by her finite recollection of color\; she requests specific shades and combinations of glazes that generate spontaneous\, distinctive surfaces when fired. This intuitive approach continues in her fiber wall works and mixed media sculptures. Utilizing punch rug embroidery\, Lopez creates abstract fields of yarn and found objects\, often repeatedly punching through the same area to yield densely layered sections. Lopez has learned to identify the color of her materials via scent and feel\, a process that is difficult to put into words. Her mixed media sculptures are created almost entirely by touch\, consisting of threads\, buttons\, beads\, fabric scraps\, and found objects instinctively stitched together using simple sewing techniques. Lopez hopes her works can be experienced through an inquiry of touch.\n\nEricka Lopez has exhibited her artwork at Laband Gallery and Tierra del Sol Gallery in Los Angeles\, CA. Lopez’s debut solo exhibition\, “Continuous Touch\,” was curated by jill moniz for Tierra del Sol Gallery in the Spring of 2023. She has had works acquired by notable private collections such as that of Beth DeWoody and by the Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum at UC Long Beach.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Numerical Methods for Coupled Aeropropulsive Design Optimization
DESCRIPTION:Aeropropulsive designs have been widely investigated in different levels of complexity. Unconventional propulsion systems are used in certain innovative aircraft ideas to save energy consumption such as over-wing nacelle. However\, there are only a few real innovative aircraft designs due to challenges in performing aeropropulsive optimizations and investigating their benefits. To improve the current state-of-the-art methods in CFD-based aeropropulsive optimization\, this thesis focuses on developing methods to enhance current models and allow more rapid coupled aeropropulsive design optimizations.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Neurodiversity in the Workplace (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:Neurodiversity is the new hot topic in the realm of disability inclusion and accessibility—and with good reason. A significant percentage of people are now recognized as having neurotypes that are not well supported by societal norms and our collective understanding of how to communicate across and support neurodiversity is still developing. Fortunately researchers\, educators\, and advocates who identify as neurodivergent are contributing to a growing body of best practices. Join the LSA Faculty & Staff Disability Navigators to learn about neurodiversity and how we can all start creating more neuroinclusive workplaces. Attendees will need to register for and attend both Part 1 and Part 2 to gain a comprehensive understanding of this topic.\n\nIn Neurodiversity in the Workplace: Part 2\, participants will: \n1. Learn about communication best practices between neurotypes.\n2. Explore practical examples of how to foster neuroinclusive workplaces\, including workspace design\, meeting facilitation\, and supervision strategies.\n3. Exchange advice with fellow participants and generate a plan to start applying neuroinclusive practices right away.\n4. Obtain a reference guide to implementing best practices in your workplace.\n\nAudience: This is a beginner-level workshop open to any LSA employee\, including our student employees. LSA employees receive priority access\, so while external guests are welcome to register they will be waitlisted and moved off the waitlist as space allows.\n\nImportant note: Please do your best to register for and attend both parts 1 and 2 as the content builds on itself. This workshop will not be recorded.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Presentation:Multi-Modal Geometric Learning for Robot Localization
DESCRIPTION:Chair: Maani Ghaffari\n\nAbstract:\nRobot localization uses external sensor data to estimate a robot's position\, but movements can alter vision measurements and learned features\, impacting robustness. This thesis introduces a new perspective on multi-modal robot localization through the integration of geometric learning\, with a primary focus on equivariant networks to address these challenges. First\, we explore the application of geometric learning in the loop closure process\, enabling the robust identification of previously visited locations despite transformative changes. Next\, we propose SE(3)-equivariant transformer designs for learning point cloud correspondences\, crucial for point cloud registration tasks. Finally\, we integrate geometric learning with visual foundation models. Overall\, this dissertation highlights the advantages of incorporating geometric constraints into machine learning models\, significantly enhancing both the reliability and performance of robot localization and contributing to critical advancements in robotics.\n\nZoom link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/91678338359?pwd=cLzyN6l1MU1exRFE25hKzb2uW9EMmW.1

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Is Software Eating the World?
DESCRIPTION:When explaining the declining labor income share in advanced economies\, the macro literature finds that the elasticity of substitution between capital and labor is greater than one. However\, the vast majority of micro-level estimates shows that capi- tal and labor are complements (elasticity less than one). Using firm- and establishment- level data from Korea\, we divide capital into equipment and software\, as they may interact with labor in different ways. Our estimation shows that equipment and labor are complements (elasticity 0.6)\, consistent with other micro-level estimates\, but soft- ware and labor are substitutes (1.6)\, a novel finding that helps reconcile the macro vs. micro-literature elasticity discord. As the quality of software improves\, labor shares fall within firms because of factor substitution and endogenously rising markups. In addition\, production reallocates toward firms that use software more intensively\, as they become effectively more productive. Because in the data these firms have higher markups and lower labor shares\, the reallocation further raises the aggregate markup and reduces the aggregate labor share. The rise of software accounts for two-thirds of the labor share decline in Korea between 1990 and 2018. The factor substitution and the markup channels are equally important. On the other hand\, the falling equipment price plays a minor role\, because the factor substitution and the markup channels offset each other.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:*CANCELED* DAF Lab | Crip Mentoring: Disability\, Publishing\, & Crip Time
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately this event has been canceled due to family emergencies. It will be rescheduled later in the winter. \n\nThe Digital Accessible Futures Lab invites you to attend a roundtable conversation with William Cheng and Sunaura Taylor on disability and publishing\, publishing as a disabled author\, and publishing in/beyond disability studies. In a climate of scarcity and uncertainty\, how might one respond to hyper-normative demands for productivity? What does it mean to write (and publish) as a disabled scholar? What does it mean to compose while crip/mad/sick—especially when our embodied knowledges are deemed antithetical to (academic) life? \n\nAbout the panelists:\n\nWilliam Cheng is a writer\, pianist\, and gamer. He is a professor of music at Dartmouth College and a founding coeditor of the Music & Social Justice Series with the University of Michigan Press. He is the author of Sound Play: Video Games and the Musical Imagination (Oxford\, 2014)\, Just Vibrations: The Purpose of Sounding Good (Michigan\, 2016)\, and Loving Music Till It Hurts (Oxford\, 2019). His op-eds and features have appeared in Washington Post\, Slate\, TIME\, Huffington Post\, Chronicle of Higher Education\, and Pacific Standard.\n\nSunaura Taylor is an artist and writer. She is the author of Beasts of Burden: Animal and Disability Liberation (The New Press\, 2017)\, which received the 2018 American Book Award. She works at the intersection of disability studies\, environmental justice\, multispecies studies\, and art practice. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Science\, Policy\, and Management at the University of California\, Berkeley. Her latest book is Disabled Ecologies: Lessons from a Wounded Desert (University of California Press\, 2024)\n\n\nWe want to make our events accessible to all participants. CART services will be provided. If you anticipate needing accommodations to participate or would like help filling out the RSVP form\, please email Giselle Mills at gimills@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Hydrogen-Powered Aircraft Design Optimization (Dissertation Defense)
DESCRIPTION:Fueling aircraft with hydrogen is one potentially compelling approach to achieve net-zero emissions in the aviation sector. However\, it is still unclear which flights hydrogen aircraft are well-suited to fly and how best to design aircraft around hydrogen’s unique properties and requirements. This work seeks to answer some of these questions by using computational models and numerical optimization to investigate the merits of different aircraft configurations\, hydrogen storage techniques\, and propulsion methods.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Computational Symmetry and Learning for Generalizable Robot Perception
DESCRIPTION:Chair: Maani Ghaffari\n\nAbstract:\nRobots require efficient and generalizable algorithms to obtain human-level autonomy in the future. Despite the rapid progress\, modern robotic algorithms often require significant training data and do not generalize well to unseen scenarios. Symmetry\, or “immunity to a possible change\,” offers a promising pathway for designing efficient and robust algorithms suited to complex real-world environments.\n\nIn this dissertation\, we explore incorporating symmetric structures to construct efficient and generalizable perception algorithms. We first propose a proprioceptive-invariant state estimation framework that operates in real time across various robotic platforms. Next\, we present a learning-based proprioceptive contact estimator for legged robots\, enabling state estimation on diverse terrains without physical contact sensors. We then develop a Lie algebraic neural network for equivariant representation learning on Lie algebras\, which we apply to various tasks\, including dynamics modeling\, classification\, and point cloud registration. Finally\, we design convolutional neural networks equivariant to homography transformations\, enabling perspective-equivariant representation learning. In summary\, this dissertation highlights the advantages of using symmetry to address various robot perception challenges\, resulting in efficient and generalizable perception algorithms. \n\nZoom link: \nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/99714074023?pwd=avVJXcBUfrC1NuUDwdoaKRkWl0w08F.1

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Acoustic Angular Momentum and Its Applications for Therapy
DESCRIPTION:Acoustic angular momentum is a physical quantity characterizing the rotation of pressure and local particle velocity fields. The acoustic angular momentum was first observed in vortex waves and was found to have many interesting physics including pseudospin based topological effects\, spin-momentum locking\, and trapping potential for contactless particle manipulations. In this talk\, Dr. Shi will focus on the discussion of the fundamentals and applications of the shear induced by the unique wave pattern of acoustic angular momentum in medical therapies. The induced shear stress drastically enhances fibrinolysis in blood clots that remarkably reduce the required treatment time with low risk of hemorrhage\, especially in treating large\, completely occluded\, acute clots. Such capability makes the vortex ultrasound based endovascular sonothrombolysis a life-saving tool for severe cerebral venous sinus thrombosis\, which has an increasing trend among young patients due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition\, the induced shear flow deforms and merges bubbles during cavitation in fluids\, which significantly enhances acoustic cavitation. In this case\, the histotrpsy driven by acoustic angular momentum has a significantly lower cavitation threshold with a much higher ablation power for the treatment of liver cancer\, which is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide.\n\nBio: Dr. Chengzhi Shi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan. Before joining the University of Michigan\, he was an Assistant Professor in the GWW School of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech. Dr. Shi earned his Ph.D. degree from the University of California\, Berkeley in 2018 and his M.S. and B.S. degrees from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2013 and 2010. His research interests include physical acoustics\, wave propagation\, metamaterials\, ultrasound imaging\, and therapeutic ultrasound. He has published many highly cited papers in renowned journals including Science\, PNAS\, and Nature Communications. Dr. Shi has also won prestigious awards including the NSF CAREER and the ONR YIP awards.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Colloquium Seminar: Chaotic spectral behavior in random graphs
DESCRIPTION:General heuristics suggest that quantum chaotic systems (such as manifolds with ergodic geodesic flow) exhibit the spectral statistics of random matrices. This behavior extends to the discrete setting\, where the spectral properties of operators have important applications to statistical physics\, computer science\, and theoretical statistics.\n\nIn this talk\, I will provide an overview of recent results demonstrating this chaotic behavior\, with a focus on proving that for the adjacency operator of a random regular graph\, all eigenvalues exhibit optimally small fluctuations. Throughout the talk\, I will introduce key techniques used in these proofs and highlight the rich connections between continuous and discrete settings.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Yiling Xie\, Ph.D. Candidate\, H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial & Systems Engineering\, Georgia Institute of Technology.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nMotivated by data perturbation\, adversarial training has recently been proposed as a new way of parameter estimation in supervised learning. This talk will discuss the statistical properties of the adversarial training estimator from both asymptotic and non- asymptotic perspectives. Firstly\, the asymptotic distribution of the adversarial training estimator will be introduced\, based on which a new technique has been proposed to improve the performance of existing adversarial training. Secondly\, the non-asymptotic convergence rate of the adversarial training estimator will be discussed. The results show that the adversarial training estimator is minimax optimal under $\ell_\infty$- perturbations in high dimensional linear regression. My research aims to provide an understanding of emerging methods in machine learning and artificial intelligence\, particularly from their statistical performance perspective. I will discuss some potential future topics.\n\nhttps://sites.google.com/view/yilingxie/home

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Analysis Seminar: Introduction to Random Lozenge Tilings
DESCRIPTION:Given a planar triangular lattice domain R\, one can ask how many lozenge tilings of R exist\, or if one even exists at all. These questions can be answered by associating a tiling of R both with a height function defined on the lattice and with a perfect matching of its dual graph. Upon introducing a probability measure on these tilings\, one finds that random height functions converge to a deterministic limit shape as the tile size decreases. In this talk\, we will discuss how to compute this limit shape as the solution of a variational problem. We will also introduce the Kenyon-Okounkov conjecture on convergence of fluctuations of centered height functions to the Gaussian free field\, a random generalized function on a region equipped with a certain complex structure.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Bygones
DESCRIPTION:Artist Presale (via Seated): Wednesday\, June 12 @ 10 a.m.\n---\nIt’s human nature to look back\, and to try to make sense of that which has gone by. For the luminous indie folk duo of Joshua Lee Turner and Allison Young\, it’s a question not only of what should be relinquished\, but also what might be worth taking with you. “There’s goodness in every decade of\nmusic. And there’s goodness in every season of life\,” Josh shares. “For us\, it’s about finding what’s golden in the past and bringing that forward.”\n\nThe pair share an eclectic nostalgia for sounds of the past—Jazz and Classical\, Golden Age musicals\, big bands of the ‘40s\, singer-songwriters of the ‘60s\, dewy indie rock of the early 2010s—as well as a passion for instrumental music and covers. These points of connection began online\, culminated in an impromptu recording session in Nashville\, and compelled an unexpected path forward. \n\nThe duo’s first release together\, a cover of Willie Nelson’s “Crazy\,” gathered massive enthusiasm online as well as the fervent demand of one UK promoter that they tour overseas. Josh and Allison accepted the invitation and rushed to record an EP to have something—anything—to play for audiences\, audiences which sold out venues and applauded The (yet-to-be-named) Bygones with standing ovations before they even strummed a note. “It didn’t make any sense\,” Josh says. “We weren’t a band yet.” But to see The Bygones live is to comprehend the hype. Allison’s stylish\, luminescent presence and vocal finesse\, Josh’s astonishing technical aptitude\, and the palpable joy in their onstage dynamic create a live show experience that demands multiple encores. \n\nRather than a band asking the world to listen\, the world asked these two musicians to be a band. Their debut album ‘The Bygones’ was released April 4\, 2024 on Tonetree.\n\nhttps://thebygonesband.com/
