Lopez lost her sight at an early age and is mostly non-verbal. This exhibition of tactile assemblage works and gestural coiled pots were created by the artist through touch and texture\, colored by memory. The works are sensory\, physical\, immediate\, reaffirming\, and deeply expressive. Viewers to this exhibition are invited to touch the work. \n\nDuring her residency\, the artist and her support team\, which includes her mother and translator\, will engage directly with students in the exhibition space\, offering a transformative experience based on human expression and connection through art. Because Ericka feels most comfortable when she is working\, she plans to make artwork with students as part of the class engagements with the exhibition.\n\nAbout Ericka Lopez\nBorn 1987 in Mexico\, Ericka Lopez has been making art at Tierra del Sol Studios since 2019. Working across ceramic\, fiber\, and mixed media constructions\, Lopez’s practice is centralized around her exploration of touch. Lopez was born with limited vision and is now completely blind. Lopez trained in massage therapy and previously volunteered at a soup kitchen when an encounter with Tierra’s ceramics studio shifted her trajectory toward fine art. Her masterful command of clay hand-building techniques enables Lopez to create intricate\, dynamic\, and organically structured coil vessels. Lopez’s works are informed by her finite recollection of color\; she requests specific shades and combinations of glazes that generate spontaneous\, distinctive surfaces when fired. This intuitive approach continues in her fiber wall works and mixed media sculptures. Utilizing punch rug embroidery\, Lopez creates abstract fields of yarn and found objects\, often repeatedly punching through the same area to yield densely layered sections. Lopez has learned to identify the color of her materials via scent and feel\, a process that is difficult to put into words. Her mixed media sculptures are created almost entirely by touch\, consisting of threads\, buttons\, beads\, fabric scraps\, and found objects instinctively stitched together using simple sewing techniques. Lopez hopes her works can be experienced through an inquiry of touch.\n\nEricka Lopez has exhibited her artwork at Laband Gallery and Tierra del Sol Gallery in Los Angeles\, CA. First\, we present a theory to describe the recent realization of a heavy fermion state in stacked MoTe2/WSe2 bilayers that dope the Mott insulator to a filling of n=1+x. The spin polaron regime at low filling (x<<1) will be presented as well as at filling n=2 where we predict a topological Kondo insulator. Second\, we present a theory to describe the two recent experiments that observed superconductivity in twisted WSe2 at 3.65 and 5 degrees. The role of the twist angle\, electron correlations\, and competing instabilities on the phase diagram of twisted WSe2 will be discussed. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. All Art is a Political Statement DESCRIPTION:\"All Art is a Political Statement\" will focus on Arijana Lekić-Fridrih’s \"Silent Mass\,\" a performance enacted as a symbol of resistance to the “Be Manly” movement\, a series of prayer events held in Croatian squares by men who call for the abolition of women’s rights. Every first Saturday of the month\, male followers gather in public squares across Croatia to pray for women’s “chastity” and for men’s “masculine authority\;” they kneel even though their movement is not directly related to the Catholic Church nor religion. There is evidence that they are funded by \"Ordo luris\,\" an ultra-conservative organization that successfully campaigned in 2021 to deny Polish women abortion rights.\n\nIn an act of resistance\, Lekić-Fridrih stands in front of this crowd of men while reading a statement about gender-based violence\, inequality\, and the legislative and daily violations of human rights against women in Croatia.\n \n This lecture will feature the new book about Arijana Lekić- Fridrih's work\, authored by Rebekah Modrak (Disobedience Press\, 2024)\, which offers Lekić- Fridrih's video interviews and public performances as a guide for activism and collective action against retrograde restrictions on the freedom of women. However\, visual evidence of such events is scarce due to uncertainties about the electromagnetic emissions accompanying gravitational waves.\n\nTo address this\, new General Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD) simulations are underway. These simulations provide insights into the environments of supermassive black hole binaries as they merge. Using advanced computational techniques to model accretion dynamics and magnetized gas flow around spinning black holes\, these simulations reveal gas flows near binary systems.\n\nThe simulations offer crucial data for predicting the electromagnetic and gravitational wave signatures of black hole binaries\, informing future observation strategies with missions like LISA\, PTA\, and other upcoming facilities. This growth is expected to continue for at least the next several years enabling existing services to be enhanced and new use cases to emerge ranging from telepresence to connected cities and factories. A key ingredient to support this growth is access to wireless spectrum\, which is a limited resource that is also used by other important applications such as radio astronomy\, earth sensing satellites\, and military and civilian radar.\n\nThe White House has recently published a new national spectrum strategy that aims to “modernize spectrum policy” and make more efficient use of this resource. This talk will discuss some aspects of this strategy and some of our current research being done in this area.\n\nBio: \nRandall Berry joined Northwestern University in 2000\, where he is currently the Chair and John A. Dever Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His research interests span topics in wireless communications\, computer networking\, network economics\, and information theory. Dr. Berry received the M.S. and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1996 and 2000\, respectively\, where he was part of the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems. His undergraduate education was at the University of Missouri-Rolla\, where he received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1993. In 1998 he was on the technical staff at MIT Lincoln Laboratory in the Advanced Networks Group.\n\nDr. Berry is the recipient of a 2003 CAREER award from the National Science Foundation and in 2014 was elevated to IEEE Fellow. In this talk\, I will present a novel laser-based approach for electric field measurements that offers exceptional sensitivity across multiple orders of magnitude and is suitable for both high and low pressure plasmas. Additionally\, I will demonstrate how this setup can simultaneously perform gas density measurements\, providing reduced electric field estimates. We anticipate that this newly developed approach will be applicable to a wide variety of plasma physics sub-fields\, making electric field measurements more accessible and straightforward.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nMarien Simeni is an Assistant Professor at the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Minnesota (UMN)\, where he started in April 2022. His research group focuses on the development of ultrafast laser diagnostics to unravel kinetic mechanisms and energy transfers in non-equilibrium and laser-produced plasmas as well as in reactive flows. They are also hotspots of respiration\, which produces greenhouse gases that can counteract the long-term carbon storage. However\, there is a paucity of spatial and temporal measurements of greenhouse gas fluxes in salt marsh ecosystems. This lack of data impairs our ability to manage salt marsh ecosystems effectively for carbon storage. Data are limited by various factors\, including logistical and financial constraints of measuring greenhouse gases. In this webinar\, we will describe our year-long collaborative project to design low-cost\, ultra-portable instruments for measuring greenhouse gas fluxes in salt marshes. A team from Boston University and the five New England NERRs worked together to test sensors that measure CO2\, temperature\, and humidity in salt marsh environments. The team conducted five field trips throughout the year\, incorporating iterative feedback on instrument design\, ease of deployment\, and alignment with existing monitoring efforts at the NERRs. DESCRIPTION:Bio: \nDr. Jan Janssen is the group leader for materials informatics at the Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials in Düsseldorf\, Germany. Previously\, he was a Director’s Postdoctoral Fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory\, where he designed materials for fusion reactors as part of the Exascale Computing Project. In addition\, he leads the development of the open-source pyiron software package\, is a maintainer of over 900 open-source software packages for the conda-forge community and an active contributor to open-source projects on Github.\n\nAbstract: \nDesigning materials for a sustainable future requires rethinking traditional materials design\, which is centered on optimizing and fine-tuning already known alloying compositions. In a mathematical sense this can be identified as a local or global optimization in the multi-dimensional alloy phase space. To sample the whole periodic table\, already a three-component alloy with 20 temperature steps and 10 concentration steps requires a million experiments\, making it prohibitive for purely experimental approaches. \nTo address this challenge\, simulation approaches and\, more recently\, machine learning models are applied to screen the periodic table. The pyiron workflow framework developed at the Max-Planck-Institute for sustainable materials predicts new materials using ab-intio thermodynamics. Starting from the interaction of electrons\, it predicts macroscopic material properties like heat capacity\, thermal expansion\, and phase stability. Recently\, the pyiron workflow framework was extended with a large language model (LLM) interface named LangSim. \nThis raises the question: Can a LLM replace a scientist? Or how does the thought process of a scientist differ from the statistical approach of the LLM? Can the LLM make us better scientists? We benchmark the capabilities of current LLMs to design new materials using atomistic simulation. The presentation introduces ab-initio thermodynamics\, covers the importance of simulation workflows to efficiently predict sustainable materials and highlights how LLMs accelerate their discovery.
