SUMMARY:Exhibition:Making it: $napshots from the Artist Pay Project
DESCRIPTION:The Artist Pay Project is an anonymous journalistic series that examines how artists survive and thrive through anonymous money diaries. Developed by 2022-2023 Knight-Wallace and the Ford School's Center for Racial Justice Fellow Makeda Easter\, the series includes interviews with over 30 artists from various disciplines — including visual arts\, dance\, film\, and drag — to understand how much artists are paid for their work\, how work is priced\, and how artists feel about their overall financial security. Making it: $napshots from the Artist Pay Project by Makeda Easter is a visually-immersive\, physical manifestation of this work\, advocating for both the value of art in our society and higher wages for working artists. \n\nMaking it: $napshots from the Artist Pay Project is sponsored by the U-M Arts Initiative and Impact Studio.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Steve Glazer Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glazer earned his BFA in art with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University\, a master’s degree in art from Central Michigan University\, and MFA in fine arts and ceramics from Indiana State University. Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. After returning home to Detroit\, Glazer began his griot series\, the “Motor City Griot Society” masks\, the faces of the superheroes that will save Detroit\, and more recently the “Motor City Griot Patrol” creatures that will protect the city of Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Susan Moran Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Susan Moran’s work is inspired by the natural world and our place in it. She collects and arranges images\, builds and subtracts\, and uses processes that suit the concepts and gives the pieces a reason for existing as textiles. Simultaneously she strives to make the medium influence the outcome in such a way that cloth and image meld together. Moran uses silkscreen\, shibori\, and stitching to embed images from her daily walks into the fabric. it's important that the work builds slowly\, involving meditative processes that connect her to the cloth and the source of the design.\n\nGallery hours: Monday-Friday\, 9 am to 5pm or by appointment serrag@med.umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Touch
DESCRIPTION:Ericka Lopez is a visual artist born in Mexico and living in Los Angeles. Lopez lost her sight at an early age and is mostly non-verbal. This exhibition of tactile assemblage works and gestural coiled pots were created by the artist through touch and texture\, colored by memory. The works are sensory\, physical\, immediate\, reaffirming\, and deeply expressive. Viewers to this exhibition are invited to touch the work. \n\nDuring her residency\, the artist and her support team\, which includes her mother and translator\, will engage directly with students in the exhibition space\, offering a transformative experience based on human expression and connection through art. Because Ericka feels most comfortable when she is working\, she plans to make artwork with students as part of the class engagements with the exhibition.\n\nAbout Ericka Lopez\nBorn 1987 in Mexico\, Ericka Lopez has been making art at Tierra del Sol Studios since 2019. Working across ceramic\, fiber\, and mixed media constructions\, Lopez’s practice is centralized around her exploration of touch. Lopez was born with limited vision and is now completely blind. Lopez trained in massage therapy and previously volunteered at a soup kitchen when an encounter with Tierra’s ceramics studio shifted her trajectory toward fine art. Her masterful command of clay hand-building techniques enables Lopez to create intricate\, dynamic\, and organically structured coil vessels. Lopez’s works are informed by her finite recollection of color\; she requests specific shades and combinations of glazes that generate spontaneous\, distinctive surfaces when fired. This intuitive approach continues in her fiber wall works and mixed media sculptures. Utilizing punch rug embroidery\, Lopez creates abstract fields of yarn and found objects\, often repeatedly punching through the same area to yield densely layered sections. Lopez has learned to identify the color of her materials via scent and feel\, a process that is difficult to put into words. Her mixed media sculptures are created almost entirely by touch\, consisting of threads\, buttons\, beads\, fabric scraps\, and found objects instinctively stitched together using simple sewing techniques. Lopez hopes her works can be experienced through an inquiry of touch.\n\nEricka Lopez has exhibited her artwork at Laband Gallery and Tierra del Sol Gallery in Los Angeles\, CA. Lopez’s debut solo exhibition\, “Continuous Touch\,” was curated by jill moniz for Tierra del Sol Gallery in the Spring of 2023. She has had works acquired by notable private collections such as that of Beth DeWoody and by the Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum at UC Long Beach.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Bittersweet Bliss
DESCRIPTION:On view December 4–15\, 2024 at Stamps Gallery.\n\nWe proudly present an exhibition that swirls through nine personal narratives of struggle\, self-knowledge\, and fantasy respectively. The imagined paired with the gut led to a collection of works that overload the senses\, and indulge in a decadence of material and ornamentation. These works conjure memories of the hospital stay\, the museum visit\, the family gathering\, and inexplicable bouts of nostalgia from a lineage that precedes us. We long\, we dream\, we ail\, we labor\, we try and fail to control\, we are overwhelmed\, and yet\, we find bliss and comfort in the middle of it all. We know what we feel and we remember it. As our BA Seniors bid farewell to Stamps\, we share this gift of our work\, tied lovingly with a bow.\n\nThe Bachelor of Arts (BA) Senior Studio (ARTDES 401) is offered for Stamps BA students in their final year of study. The BA Senior Studio Exhibition offers these students the opportunity to build on the particular characteristics of the BA degree\, and focus on creating and exhibiting a culminating\, self-directed project. Students work independently or collaboratively to define a project plan with goals\, benchmarks\, and a timeline. \n\nThe BA Senior Studio Exhibition is a new tradition for Stamps\, with the inaugural show taking place in Fall 2024. These students and instructors have worked collaboratively to produce a fully self-directed show from start to finish\, emphasizing the skills and practices associated with producing professional exhibitions\, in addition to their studio work. \n\nFaculty:\nNick Tobier\, Professor\nMichelle Cieloszczyk\, GSI\n\nBA Student Artists and Designers:\nMaria D'Ambrosio\nDanielle de Coster\nEsha Kumar\nPeyton Messner\nMaya Moufawad\nRia Garcia Rivera\nBenjamin Nicolas Seguin \nScott Wallace Smith\nSiyu Zhong

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 13 – December 7\, 2024Opening Reception: September 19\, 2024\n\nKelly Church &amp\; Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue is a major exhibition that centers the subjectivities of two contemporary Indigenous artists whose practices have sustained and bolstered the relevance of the age-old Anishinaabe practice of black ash basket-making in the 21st century. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Together\, the exhibition offers an incisive critique of the colonial\, racist paradigm of systemic erasure and assimilation that continues to this day\, with the ongoing crises of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, culture wars\, and climate change that threaten Indigenous ways of living\, sustenance\, and making. \nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra with Curatorial Assistant Zoi Crampton.\nStamps Gallery is grateful to Michigan Humanities and U-M Arts Initiative for generously supporting the exhibition and programs.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science Informational Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science (MPSDS) a graduate program within the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research\, will host an information session about the program on December 5\, 2024.\n\nThursday\, December 5\, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM (EDT) .Advance registration is required.\n\nOur curriculum is concerned with a broad set of data sources including survey data\, but also including social media posts\, sensor data\, and administrative records\, as well as analytic methods for working with these new data sources. We bring to data science a focus on data quality — which is not at the center of traditional data science. The MPSDS name speaks to what we teach and work on at the intersection of social research and data.\n\nWe offer students a choice of “tracks” or emphases—social science\, data science or statistics. All of our students are thoroughly introduced to numerous methods for collecting data and combining data from multiple sources for conducting social research. We focus on evaluating and improving data quality.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Quantum Research Institute Seminar | From Classical to Quantum and Back: Optimizing Quantum Algorithms for Next-Generation Quantum Chemistry
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nQuantum chemistry problem is one of the attractive targets for demonstrating the quantum advantage of quantum computing technology. Having strongly correlated systems as the main target\, I would like to discuss what new classical computing techniques need to be developed to help quantum computing algorithms to solve the electronic structure problem. Encoding the electronic Hamiltonian in a second quantized form on a quantum computer is a complex task\, with efficiency challenges that can significantly impact the overall performance of quantum solutions. To address these challenges\, we propose partitioning the Hamiltonian into a sum of fragments that can be diagonalized through rotations derived from small Lie groups or the Clifford group. These partitions simplify algebraic manipulations critical for circuit compilation and quantum measurement processes. I will demonstrate how this Hamiltonian partitioning strategy enhances the efficiency of key quantum chemistry algorithms\, including the Variational Quantum Eigensolver and Quantum Phase Estimation.\n\nBio:\nArtur Izmaylov is a Professor at the University of Toronto\, with appointments in the Departments of Chemistry and Physical and Environmental Sciences. He specializes in theoretical and computational chemistry\, focusing on the development of innovative quantum chemistry methods. His research covers quantum dynamics\, electronic structure theory\, and leveraging quantum computing to tackle challenging quantum many-body problems. These problems include determining electronic states and properties of strongly correlated molecules and solids\, modeling non-adiabatic molecular dynamics\, and predicting non-equilibrium stationary states of open quantum systems. Prof. Izmaylov has made significant contributions to efficient state preparation techniques\, such as Qubit Coupled Cluster theory\, and advanced quantum measurement strategies. His work has also provided critical insights into the role of geometric phases in non-adiabatic dynamics. These achievements received prestigious awards\, including the Sloan Fellowship (2015)\, Ontario Early Researcher Award (Canada\, 2017)\, Tom Ziegler Award (Canadian Society for Chemistry\, 2019)\, Journal of Physical Chemistry Lectureship Award (ACS\, 2019)\, and the Google Quantum Research Award (2019). His group currently focuses on developing error-corrected quantum algorithms and exploring quantum-inspired techniques for classical computation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Under the influence: Alcohol use and health implications among older couples
DESCRIPTION:Alcohol may have negative implications for older adults due to age-related physiological changes and medication use that may make even small amounts of alcohol use detrimental. Research on younger couples has revealed that couples who have concordant drinking behaviors (e.g.\, both drink alcohol) tend to have better quality marriages and are less likely to divorce compared to couples who have discordant drinking behaviors. It is unclear whether these same patterns exist among older couples and whether they have implications for physical health as they grow older together. This talk will discuss findings from our NIAAA-funded project that examined alcohol use and health among couples in the Health and Retirement Study.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ChE SEMINAR: Qiuming Yu\, Cornell University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nPlasmonic biosensors based on surface resonance plasmon (SPR) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) have emerged as a powerful analytical and sensing technique with broad applications\, such as food safety\, biomedicine\, and environmental monitoring\, because of the label-free\, real-time detection capability offered by SPR biosensors and molecular specificity and high sensitivity enabled by SERS. For the SPR biosensors\, I will highlight our recent effort in the development of immunoassays for the detection of extracellular vesicles (EVs) via universal tetraspnins by considering the factors like antibody clonality (monoclonal vs. polyclonal)\, antibody surface coverage\, and tetraspanin-enriched microdomains as well as discuss the limit of detection and antibody-EV binding kinetics. I will showcase our effort on the development of dually functional interdigitated electrodes that can not only sustain SPR mode but also increase bacterial mass transport through external application of dielectrophoresis for the detection of low concentration bacteria. For SERS biosensors\, since electromagnetic enhancement dominates the SERS effect due to extremely strong local electric fields (i.e.\, hot spots) induced by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)\, the development of plasmonic nanostructures as SERS-active substrates is one of the frontiers in this field. I will first talk about our effort on the development of SERS-active plasmonic nanostructures\, including quasi-3-dimension plasmonic nanostructure arrays (Q3D-PNAs) and the nanostructures enabling the extension of electric field\, for sensitive detection of small and large analytes. As detection using SERS is typically carried out on bare metal surfaces\, because of the near field effect\, non-specific adsorption frequently occurs and significantly reduces detection performance. In this regard\, I will talk about our effort on the development of stealth surface modification and hierarchical zwitterionic modification for SERS substrates to enable the sensitive and specific detection in protein solution and real-time drug monitoring from blood plasma\, respectively. \n\nSpeaker Bio:\nQiuming Yu received her B.S. and M.S. in Chemistry from Nanjing University\, China in 1985 and 1989\, respectively\, and her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University in 1995. She was a postdoctoral fellow in the Micro-devices Laboratory at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory\, California Institute of Technology\, from 1995-1996. After spending three years as a research assistant professor in Chemical Engineering at Kansas State University\, she moved to the University of Washington and was a full professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering. She joined the Robert Frederick Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Cornell University in July 2020 as a professor.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Squeaky Hinges and Sticking-up Nails: Students Negotiating Teamwork
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In cornerstone and capstone design courses\, teams of students negotiate both work products and work processes. In such negotiations\, some students speak up more than others\, and some are listened to more than others. These patterns of power and agency\, many of which happen in small groups and are non-obvious to instructors\, have important implications for student experiences in our courses and for overall inclusion and belongingness. In this talk\, I will present research (forthcoming in Journal of Applied Psychology) from first year courses at UM to show both predictors to speaking up as well as downstream effects of having one's ideas listened to. I will also describe ongoing efforts to enable students and instructors to recognize inequitable patterns of speech and influence (one\, a 50-min classroom activity easily adapted for other contexts\; the other\, a grant-funded study of \"equity reports\" highlighting trends for faculty). Finally\, I will discuss the opportunities and challenges of working as a teaching faculty member\, researching student experiences in my own classrooms.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Spaces of holomorphic curves on blowups
DESCRIPTION:Let C be a smooth projective curve and X be a smooth projective variety. We will consider the space of degree d holomorphic maps from C to X. When X is a projective space\, Segal discovered a remarkable phenomenon: as the degree increases\, the homology of the space of holomorphic maps approximates the homology of the space of all continuous maps. Ellenberg-Venkatesh observed that this phenomenon is related to Manin's conjectures about rational points on Fano varieties\, suggesting it holds more generally. I will talk about joint work with Ronno Das considering the case where X is a blowup of a projective space at finitely many points (including the case of del Pezzo surfaces).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nHemorrhagic shock is the leading cause of preventable death after a traumatic injury\, and accounts for 90% of military and 35% of civilian fatalities after trauma. Injuries to non-compressible intracavity regions\, such as the chest and abdomen\, are a major clinical challenge due to a lack of appropriate interventions\, and represent 30-40% of early fatalities. To address this problem\, endovascular hemorrhage control (EHC) devices and minimally invasive techniques such as Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta (REBOA) have been increasingly adopted. REBOA involves inflation of a balloon catheter in the aorta\, which restricts blood flow distal to the occlusion and consequently minimizes bleeding. While REBOA is effective at restoring proximal perfusion\, the reductions in distal blood flow can result in ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injuries increasing the risk of subsequent renal failure. There is a pressing need to identify optimal occlusion size and duration of REBOA deployment to mitigate this risk. To date\, large animal preclinical models have been predominantly used to answer these questions\, but they are inherently expensive. Arguably\, the lack of alternative tools to test EHC devices has hindered the growth and pace of innovation for hemorrhage control. Development of a robust in silico model for hemorrhage would significantly improve preclinical testing and optimization of EHC devices.\n\nTo address this gap\, we proposed to develop and validate a novel multi-scale computational model that will allow us to simulate the in vivo physiologic response to hemorrhagic shock. Using a 3D-0D closed loop approach of the cardiovascular system (where total blood volume is conserved\, as the sum of arterial and venous returns)\, we will be able to simulate the critical feedback loops and biologic response functions to render a physiologically relevant model. In this talk\, I will share our ongoing work that utilizes large animal experiments and CFD modeling to characterize the acute and transient hemodynamic changes during hemorrhagic shock\, aortic occlusion (via REBOA)\, and resuscitation. I will discuss some experimental challenges and highlight areas where both engineers and physicians can work together to improve our delivery of emergency and trauma care.\n\nBio:\nDr. Elaheh (Ellie) Rahbar received her B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Michigan State University in 2006 and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering\, under the tutelage of Professor James E. Moore\, Jr.\, at Texas A&M University in 2011. During her doctoral studies\, Dr. Rahbar was a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow (NSF-GRFP) and performed research in the area of lymphatic fluid mechanics. In fact she developed the first 3D CFD models for lymph flow and validated them with in situ animal data. She did her postdoctoral training at the Center for Translational Injury Research (CeTIR) at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston under the mentorship of Drs. John Holcomb and Charles Wade. During her postdoctoral training\, she was an integral member of the PROMMTT and PROPPR multi-site clinical trials investigating optimal blood transfusion delivery to critically injured patients. In Jan. 2015\, she became an Assistant Professor in Biomedical Engineering at Wake Forest University\, part of the joint Virginia Tech – Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences graduate program where she established her independent lab in translational trauma research. Her research lab aims to engineer personalized solutions for the treatment and management of hemorrhagic shock\, traumatic brain injury\, and other critical injured conditions. She takes a holistic approach at studying the acute physiologic response to traumatic injuries and hemorrhage by integrating hemodynamic and biomarker changes over time. Over the past decade\, Dr. Rahbar has had success in leading several research and training programs supported extramurally by NIH\, NSF and DOD and has mentored over 70 trainees. In Jan. 2024\, Dr. Rahbar returned to Texas A&M as a tenured Associate Professor in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Veterinary Physiology & Pharmacology at Texas A&M University with a vision to expand translational preclinical studies for both veterinary and human health.\n\nZoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/94337625486

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Department of Astronomy 2024-2025 Colloquium Series Presents:
DESCRIPTION:\"Atmospheric Retrievals and Stellar Abundances of Benchmark Brown Dwarf Systems: What can we learn? Where are we going?\"\n\nBrown dwarf characterization can help inform exoplanet studies\, which provides key insight into gas-giant formation and evolution. The chemical abundances of atomic and molecular species of host stars can help to provide insight into planetary formation processes\, by helping us to understand the initial composition of protoplanetary disks. Stellar abundance measurements combined with atmospheric retrievals are a powerful combination to understand the chemical and physical processes in atmospheres of brown dwarfs to probe formation pathways. In this talk\, I will present results from an atmospheric retrieval study of two dusty planetary-mass objects using the Brewster retrieval framework. I will discuss retrieval approaches and lessons learned from retrievals in the complex regime of young cloudy brown dwarfs. Lastly\, I will present a small study on the characterization and abundance determination for FGK stars hosting benchmark brown dwarf companions using PEPSI.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Colloquium Seminar: Mathematical models of reputation\, polarization\, and cooperation
DESCRIPTION:Addressing contemporary problems of collective action—from pandemic management to climate change—requires that we understand the dynamic interplay between information and behavior. In this talk\, I will discuss two models of cooperative behavior coupled with dynamics of information spread. In the first model\, we will consider cooperation driven by the spread of social reputations. Using methods from evolutionary game theory and dynamical systems\, we develop a mathematical model of cooperation that integrates a mechanistic description of how reputations spread through peer-to-peer gossip. We show that sufficiently long periods of gossip can stabilize cooperation by facilitating consensus about reputations. In the second model\, we will examine the dynamics of prosociality under political polarization. We develop a stochastic model of game-theoretic opinion dynamics in a multi-dimensional space of political interests. We show that while increasing the diversity of interests can improve both cooperation and social cohesion\, strong partisan bias reduces the effective dimensionality of the opinion space via self-sorting along party lines\, yielding greater in-group cooperation at the cost of increasing polarization. Taken together\, these studies contribute to our understanding of when and how communication and opinion contagion facilitate cooperation.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - Global range expansion and niche breadth evolution in an iconic insect species
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our ongoing Thursday Seminar Series.\n\nAbout this seminar: Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) are famous for their long-distance migration and reliance on milkweed (Asclepias spp.) host plants in North America. Over recent evolutionary history\, monarchs have expanded their geographic range and can now be found in locations from Australia to Puerto Rico to Morocco. In contrast to their migratory ancestors\, nearly all recently-established monarch populations have ceased seasonal migration and instead breed year-round on a restricted assemblage of milkweeds\, some of which are evolutionarily novel host plants. In this seminar\, I will highlight my research into the history of the monarch’s global range expansion\, the causes and consequences of migration loss\, and population-level differences in physiology associated with divergent host plant use. I will also discuss ongoing research that uses chemical fingerprinting methods to understand patterns of host plant use in monarch butterflies from western North America.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Leinweber Center for Theoretical Physics Public Lecture | The Quantum Cosmos and Our Place Within It
DESCRIPTION:When we step outside to contemplate the night sky\, we often imagine ourselves isolated and adrift in a vast cavern of empty space—but is it so? Modern physics views the universe as more full than empty. Over the past century\, this unfamiliar idea has emerged from a surprising partnership of exotic concepts: quantum physics and Einstein's relativity. In this talk I'll illustrate how this partnership provides the foundation for every aspect of human experience\, including the existence of subatomic particles (and the effect of the so-called \"Higgs field\")\, the peaceful nature of our journey through the cosmos\, and the solidity of the ground beneath our feet.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Misperceptions and Demand for Democracy under Authoritarianism
DESCRIPTION:This paper investigates whether enduring authoritarian regimes are in part rooted in the population’s misperceptions about their social and economic costs—as opposed to a general preference for authoritari- anism. We explore this question using online and field experiments in the context of T ̈urkiye’s May 2023 presidential and parliamentary elections. We confirm that voters\, especially those supporting the incumbent authoritarian government systematically underestimate the extent to which democracy and media freedom have been eroded in T ̈urkiye and their usefulness in dealing with natural disasters and corruption (two salient issues in T ̈urkiye). We find that providing (accurate) information about the state and implications of democracy and media freedom have significant effects on beliefs and increase the likelihood of voting for the opposition by about 3.7 percentage points (6.2 percent) in the online experiment. In the field experiment\, we estimate similarly-sized impacts on the ballot-box level vote share—with the information treatment leading to a 2.4 percentage point (4.4 percent) increase in the opposition’s vote share. Interestingly\, both in the field and online\, the results are driven not by further mobilizing opposition supporters\, but by influencing those likely to vote for the governing coalition and those holding more misperceived beliefs about democracy and media freedom in T ̈urkiye. The evidence suggests that at least part of the support for authoritarian regimes may be coming from misperceptions about their institutions and policies\, and may be more malleable than typically presumed.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Rep Stability/Comm Alg Seminar: An explicit derived McKay correspondence for some complex reflection groups of rank 2
DESCRIPTION:Let $G$ be a finite subgroup of $SL_2(\mathbb{C})$ acting on $\mathbb{C}^2=Spec\mathbb{C}[x\,y]$. The classical McKay correspondence gives a 1-1 correspondence between nontrivial irreducible representations of $G$\, nontrivial maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules of $\mathbb{C}[x\,y]^G$\, and irreducible components of the exceptional divisor of the minimal resolution of singularities $\pi\colon Y\to \bC^2/G$. There is also a derived version of this correspondence which says that $D^b_G(\mathbb{C}[x\,y])\simeq D^b(Y)$. If $G$ a finite subgroup of $GL_2(\mathbb{C})$ but not $SL_2(\mathbb{C}$ and contains no reflections\, analogous versions of these correspondences are known. In this talk\, I will discuss results on the derived version of this correspondence for some finite subgroups of $GL_2(\mathbb{C})$ that are generated by reflections and discuss connections to work on the algebraic version of the correspondence in this setting due to Buchweitz-Faber-Ingalls. This is joint work with Anirban Bhaduri\, Yael Davidov\, Eleonore Faber\, Katrina Honigs\, Eric Overton-Walker\, and Dylan Spence.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Penny Stamps Speaker Series - Ty Jeffries
DESCRIPTION:Ty Jeffries is a prolific composer\, lyricist\, pianist\, singer\, and character comedian\, whose critically acclaimed works are influenced by the combination of his classical training and his love of both the golden age of Hollywood and the Great American and British Songbooks. He is the son of the late British character actor\, screenwriter\, and director Lionel Jeffries\, who is famous for starring in Camelot and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.\n\nJeffries is best known for his onstage persona of Miss Hope Springs\, a blonde ex-Vegas showgirl alter-ego who plays the piano and sings cabaret songs. Jeffries plays Springs as a tragicomic “recovering showgirl” looking back on her life and career. The character is inspired partly by memories of fading Hollywood icons visiting his childhood home\, as well as memories of old black-and-white films he and his father watched together.\n\nJeffries won Best Cabaret Brighton Fringe in 2011 and was invited to open the new cabaret room The Crazy Coqs in London\, whereMiss Hope Springs Sunday Soirées became an institution. Jeffries went on to be resident at The Matcham Room in the Hippodrome Casino (better known as The Talk of the Town where Judy Garland once played)\, and headlined at the Rah Rah Room in the old Pigalle Nightclub. \n\nIn 2016\, Jeffries toured the United States with Miss Hope Springs\, performing shows in New York\, Los Angeles\, San Diego\, San Francisco and New Hope\, Pennsylvania\, with an appearance at Lincoln Centre. In 2019\, Jeffries won Broadway World Awards “Best Cabaret” at Edinburgh Fringe Festival for his show It’s Miss Hope Springs. In 2021\, his solo recorded concert at Wigmore Hall for the iconic Pride 2021 celebration was praised by NYC Bistro Awards. In 2022\, Miss Hope Springs celebrated 10 years of residency at Crazy Coqs with a sold out rave review week of shows\, with the residency continuing into 2023.\n\nWith support from the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre & Dance. This project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan. Series presenting partners: Detroit PBS and PBS Books. Media partner: Michigan Public.

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:Opening Reception: Bittersweet Bliss
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, December 5 from 6:30-8 p.m. for the opening reception of Bittersweet Bliss: the 2024 BA Senior Studio Exhibition.\nWe proudly present an exhibition that swirls through nine personal narratives of struggle\, self-knowledge\, and fantasy respectively. As our BA Seniors bid farewell to Stamps\, we share this gift of our work\, tied lovingly with a bow.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Mind Matters: Ketamine for mental health treatment — What's the latest?
DESCRIPTION:Ketamine is an anesthetic agent with powerful antidepressant properties. Over the last several decades\, studies have shown the potential for ketamine as a therapeutic option for treatment-resistant depression. Ketamine is a safe option to provide relief from severe and persistent symptoms of depression and suicidal thinking\, and can potentially provide relief of symptoms within hours to days after a single infusion. Ketamine also exists as a nasal spray version.\n\nWhat makes ketamine different from other medications?\n\nKetamine can provide rapid relief for symptoms of depression and suicidal thoughts. Traditionally\, medications could take weeks before patients begin to experience relief of symptoms. With ketamine\, patients often experience relief of symptoms within hours.\n\nHowever\, ketamine infusion therapy and nasal spray is not right for everyone\, and there are risks to ordering ketamine in other delivery forms from online sources offering telehealth-only care. This session will discuss these issues too. \n\nThis webinar is free and open to the public. Register for the link to join.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Making It: per$pectives on the business of creativity
DESCRIPTION:In our society\, art is valued as a core representation of humanity and essential to our day-to-day lives. However\, as illuminated by interviews in The Artist Pay Project\, artists across the U.S. regularly struggle to make ends meet. The arts ecosystem can only thrive with the combined efforts of all\, including working artists\, consumers\, policy makers\, attorneys\, business leaders\, administrators\, journalists\, advocates\, etc. Everyone is participating in this system. Join a panel of individuals with diverse professions to explore perspectives on the business of creativity and learn how each of us can contribute to better financial wellness for artists. Art supplies and snacks will be provided!\n\nThis discussion is a free\, public event presented in conjunction with Making it: $napshots from the Artist Pay Project by Makeda Easter\, an exhibition based on an anonymous journalistic series that examines how artists survive and thrive through anonymous money diaries. \n\n*Making it: $napshots from the Artist Pay Project is sponsored by the U-M Arts Initiative and Impact Studio. SUMMARY:Performance:\"Where We Meet\" - Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance Senior Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Dance at the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre\, and Dance presents *Where We Meet*\, a Bachelor of Fine Arts dance concert at the Performance Studio Theatre. The concert features choreography and performance by graduating seniors Gabriella Boutiette\, Rachel Dunklee\, Sarah Gorman\, Katherine Mitchell\, and Abigail Widlak.\n\nGabriella Boutiette’s group work\, *Where do you sail when the sun surrenders?*\, is about the individual journey of finding the power of you. Although everyone’s journey in finding themselves\, their purpose\, and what they think the value they bring to the world manifests differently\, it is not as rare an experience as one might think. One’s power can come from within and also from finding those people who share the same drive or passion for something. When the world goes quiet\, who are the people you choose to surround yourself with? Who are you\, and what is your power? Boutiette’s solo\, Énoument\, investigates the bittersweet feeling of finally reaching the answers you’ve sought\, while grappling with the sorrow that you are unable to enlighten your past self.\n\nRachel Dunklee’s group\, *C’EST COMME ÇA\, C’EST COMME ÇA*\, follows a group of people after a long week of working a corporate job winding down at a back-door poker game. Playing the game\, they become less and less interested in the rivalry and the outcome and band together to throw the game away. Rachel’s solo work\, Laugh Until The Sun Goes\, is based on reflecting upon a past relationship. While the rain can be intense\, it is also very meditative and symbolic of washing yourself clean of the past. The solo acts as the last look at the relationship before letting it go.\n\nSarah Gorman’s group piece\, *Weaving Hearts*\, focuses on the complex ways in which people are perceived and act differently in every interaction. The dance will explore the complexities and roles of relationships and their function in our everyday lives: lighthearted\, carefree\, and heartbreaking. Gorman’s piece will celebrate girlhood and friendship. Creating a quilt of vignettes to illuminate the colorful fabric of the human experience. Gorman’s solo Emendemus in Melius will illuminate overcoming challenges in life and how beautiful it is for one to persevere. The piece navigates the challenges of self-doubt\, capturing moments of vulnerability that ultimately transform into strength. The solo will dive into the feeling of being held back\, but wanting to\, and eventually\, being set free.\n\nKatherine Mitchell’s group work\, *Pink Rubber Handlebars*\, explores a complex nostalgic state through relationships and interconnectedness\, highlighting the thrilling freedom of youth. Incorporating film elements\, the dancers evoke the essence of girlhood and growing up\, capturing the bittersweet blend of longing and comfort that nostalgia brings. Mitchell’s solo In a Passing Moment draws from the quiet beauty of empathy and the impact of shared human experience. Rooted in personal memories and fleeting encounters\, it reflects a profound sense of interconnectedness\, embracing the unknowns we each carry. \n\n\nAbby Widlak’s group work\, *Was*\, explores the idea of love and loss\, how grief can impact not only a person's day-to-day life\, but worldview as well. With an original score by Ryan Ardelt the dancers take a journey between the five stages of grief on the non-linear road to acceptance. Widlak’s solo\, Dear Abigail\, addresses what it is like to never be yourself with any specific person. She adventures through the idea of what it means to wear different masks with different people. This work is coupled with an original score by Jason Zhang\, a senior music composition and computer science major at U-M.

SUMMARY:Performance:Jeffrey Foucault
DESCRIPTION:In two decades on the road Jeffrey Foucault has become one of the most distinctive voices in American music\, refining a sound instantly recognizable for its simplicity and emotional power. With a string of critically acclaimed studio albums – “Stark\, literate songs that are as wide open as the landscape of his native Midwest” (The New Yorker)\, “Beat-up troubadour folk whittled to dolorous perfection” (Uncut)\, “Songwriting Brilliance\,” (Irish Times) – he’s built a brick-and-mortar international touring career and a devoted following\, one that includes luminaries like Van Dyke Parks\, Greil Marcus\, and Don Henley.\n\nIn September of 2024 Jeffrey Foucault will release THE UNIVERSAL FIRE (Fluff & Gravy\, 9/6/24)\, his first album of entirely new material since 2018. A series of high-voltage performances cut live in one room\, the album is both a working wake – Foucault lost his best friend and drummer Billy Conway\, to cancer in 2021 – and a meditation on the nature of beauty\, artifact\, and loss.\n\nAugmenting Foucault’s all-star band with members of Calexico and Bon Iver (drummer John Convertino and producer/saxophonist Mike Lewis) THE UNIVERSAL FIRE sets Conway’s death against the massive 2008 fire at the Universal Studios lot in California that destroyed the master recordings of some of our bedrock American music\, to interrogate ideas about mortality\, legacy\, meaning\, and calling.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Sorcerer
DESCRIPTION:The Sorcerer is a two-act comic opera\, with a libretto by W. S. Gilbert and music by Arthur Sullivan. Based on a Christmas story\, An Elixir of Love\, that Gilbert wrote for The Graphic magazine in 1876\, this production will be set in the modern South of America. A young man\, Alexis\, is obsessed with the idea of love levelling all ranks and social distinctions. To promote his beliefs\, he invites the proprietor of J. W. Wells & Co.\, Family Sorcerers\, to brew a love potion. This causes everyone in the village to fall in love with the first person they see and results in the pairing of comically mismatched couples. To see how it all works out\, come see this University of Michigan Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s production.
