Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. Lopez lost her sight at an early age and is mostly non-verbal. This exhibition of tactile assemblage works and gestural coiled pots were created by the artist through touch and texture\, colored by memory. The works are sensory\, physical\, immediate\, reaffirming\, and deeply expressive. Viewers to this exhibition are invited to touch the work. \n\nDuring her residency\, the artist and her support team\, which includes her mother and translator\, will engage directly with students in the exhibition space\, offering a transformative experience based on human expression and connection through art. Because Ericka feels most comfortable when she is working\, she plans to make artwork with students as part of the class engagements with the exhibition.\n\nAbout Ericka Lopez\nBorn 1987 in Mexico\, Ericka Lopez has been making art at Tierra del Sol Studios since 2019. Working across ceramic\, fiber\, and mixed media constructions\, Lopez’s practice is centralized around her exploration of touch. Lopez was born with limited vision and is now completely blind. Lopez trained in massage therapy and previously volunteered at a soup kitchen when an encounter with Tierra’s ceramics studio shifted her trajectory toward fine art. Her masterful command of clay hand-building techniques enables Lopez to create intricate\, dynamic\, and organically structured coil vessels. Lopez’s works are informed by her finite recollection of color\; she requests specific shades and combinations of glazes that generate spontaneous\, distinctive surfaces when fired. This intuitive approach continues in her fiber wall works and mixed media sculptures. Utilizing punch rug embroidery\, Lopez creates abstract fields of yarn and found objects\, often repeatedly punching through the same area to yield densely layered sections. Lopez has learned to identify the color of her materials via scent and feel\, a process that is difficult to put into words. Her mixed media sculptures are created almost entirely by touch\, consisting of threads\, buttons\, beads\, fabric scraps\, and found objects instinctively stitched together using simple sewing techniques. Lopez hopes her works can be experienced through an inquiry of touch.\n\nEricka Lopez has exhibited her artwork at Laband Gallery and Tierra del Sol Gallery in Los Angeles\, CA. Lopez’s debut solo exhibition\, “Continuous Touch\,” was curated by jill moniz for Tierra del Sol Gallery in the Spring of 2023. DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Given sequentially observed data\, anytime-valid methods guarantee valid inference at adaptively chosen sample sizes\, as opposed to pre-specified sample sizes\, thereby allowing the experimenter to stop experiments early. Furthermore\, when using anytime-valid confidence intervals\, also known as confidence sequences\, the experimenter can repeatedly peek at the results over time (referred to as \"continuous monitoring\") without compromising validity.\n\nIn this talk\, I will discuss two recent advances in the field of anytime-valid inference. First\, I will introduce anytime-valid approaches to the problem of comparing sequential forecasters under continuous monitoring\, commonly found in meteorology\, sports\, and finance. In particular\, I will derive tight confidence sequences that can track the time-varying mean expected score difference between any two forecasters\, without requiring restrictive assumptions such as stationarity.\n\nSecond\, I will introduce a general approach to combining anytime-valid statistical evidence (\"e-process\") for a null hypothesis\, where the evidence is constructed in different information sets (filtrations). In the Chilean market\, where half of private hospital capacity is vertically integrated\, integration increases inpatient care spending by 6 percent and decreases consumer surplus and total welfare. Integrated insurers offer generous coverage at integrated hospitals\, limited access to rival hospitals\, and lower premiums. Competition for enrollees forces non-integrated insurers to provide additional coverage to high-quality non-integrated hospitals\, resulting in plan networks that limit hospital competition. Whereas vertical integration reduces double marginalization\, skewed cost-sharing structures and\, their effect on hospital competition than compensate\, leading to an overall negative welfare impact. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. However\, current state-of-the-art molecular property prediction models still require labeled training data generated using wet-lab experiments or Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Their utility is limited by the scarcity and heterogeneity of labeled materials datasets. Foundation models (FMs) offer a solution to this: these models use self-supervised pre-training strategies to leverage unlabeled datasets and learn representations of data that can be applied to downstream tasks. Large unlabeled datasets of billions of synthesizable molecules are readily available. Prior attempts to train FMs for molecular property prediction demonstrate promise\; however\, equivariant geometric models trained using supervised learning are still more accurate. This can be attributed to the fact that foundation models are extremely expensive to train and can be difficult to interpret\; they require huge compute budgets\, complex distributed computing techniques\, and extensive hyperparameter searches. Our work addresses these challenges on three fronts: (1) we have prototyped a scalable workflow for distributed training of molecular foundation models (2) we have trained large foundation models using this workflow which demonstrate state-of-the-art molecular property prediction capabilities across several benchmarks and (3) we have applied model interpretability strategies such as the attention visualization to shed insight on molecular structure relationships learn by the transformer.\n\nBio: Anoushka is a third-year PhD student in Prof. Venkat Viswanathan’s group at the University of Michigan. But what are students’ actual collaborative experiences in these programs\, and are they equitable? To answer these questions\, I draw on a qualitative case study of an elite engineering school involving in-depth interviews with engineering undergraduates and administrators\, as well as ethnographic observations of life at the school over the course of two and a half years. I argue that the culture and structure of elite STEM programs actually undermine the equitable promises of collaborative learning by creating more positive collaborative experiences for privileged students than for their less-privileged counterparts\, which positions privileged students to receive more academic help\, support\, and learning opportunities. I find that although students are influenced\, expected\, and instructed to collaborate\, the inexplicit rules and limited structuring around how and with whom to do so lead students to rely on their own backgrounds to navigate the collaborative scene. This context enables privileged students—namely those from class-advantaged high school contexts as well as male and White and Asian students (or those with intersectional privileges)—to experience the most success with collaboration. The findings suggest that STEM programs’ promotion of collaborative learning approaches falls short in engineering equitable educational advantages for students of all backgrounds. Here\, I will discuss several studies that\, in different ways\, address the physics of how size is set and how precisely it can be controlled. First\, I will introduce a simple phenomenological framework that allows one to consider tradeoffs between noise in the actual growth process and in a system's internal measurement of its own size. I will show how this framework places a bound on the size precision of individual bacterial cells and analyze data from recent experiments to show that\, at least in some circumstances\, the measured precision is very near this bound. Then\, I will extend the framework to consider how sizes can be coordinated by chemical signals\, for example between organs like the left and right wings of a fruit fly\, and show that theory severely limits how well this can be done. Finally\, I will study the noisy dynamics of growth of multi-cellular tissues in the presence of various feedback laws\, finding that only certain forms of mechanical feedback can specify a unique organ size. Time permitting\, I will introduce a formalism to describe the elasticity of growing objects with strong connections to differential geometry and observe that growing tissues tend to show power law density correlations\, reminiscent of those also observed in models of the early universe. Arguing that redface is more than just the costumes or makeup an actor wears\, Bethany Hughes contends that it is a collaborative\, curatorial process through which artists and audiences make certain bodies legible as “Indian.” By chronicling how performances and definitions of redface rely upon legibility and delineations of race that are culturally constructed and routinely shifting\, this book offers an understanding of how redface works to naturalize a very particular version of history and\, in doing so\, mask its own performativity. Tracing the “Stage Indian” from its early nineteenth-century roots to its proliferation across theatrical entertainment forms and turn of the twenty-first century attempts to address its racist legacy\, Redface uses case studies in law and civic life to understand its offstage impact. Hughes connects extensive scholarship on the “Indian” in American culture to the theatrical history of racial impersonation and critiques of settler colonialism\, demonstrating redface’s high stakes for Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike. Reconstructing how past ocean temperatures changed across extinction events allows us to understand the baseline climate state upon which extinction occurred and whether temperature changes may have caused\, contributed to\, or exacerbated extinction severity. My research uses stable and clumped isotope paleothermometry applied to marine mollusk fossils (fossil seashells) to do just this - study the state of the oceans during key extinction intervals of Earth's history. In this talk\, I will describe the evolution in my thinking over my career relating to how clumped isotopes can be applied to reveal the most secrets from fossil shells and tell us not only about climate but about how the organism lived\, built its shell\, and died. I will present results relating to the Cretaceous-Paleogene global mass extinction and the Plio-Pleistocene regional molluscan mass extinction\, including both typical applications of isotope paleothermometry and newer\, more creative applications. This experimental musical explores self-reflection\, ancestral veneration\, and transformation. “Negro\, Spiritual\,” also the name of her forthcoming debut album\, recognizes the historical significance\, power\, and ownership of Black American musical contributions. The Negro Spiritual is considered to be the first “American” musical form and has since shaped the composition of contemporary music with continued influence worldwide. Claiming that lineage as an inheritance and birthright\, Supercoolwicked uses Negro spirituals as a launchpad for her personal journey to emotional safety and freedom. A young man\, Alexis\, is obsessed with the idea of love levelling all ranks and social distinctions. To promote his beliefs\, he invites the proprietor of J. W. Wells & Co.\, Family Sorcerers\, to brew a love potion. This causes everyone in the village to fall in love with the first person they see and results in the pairing of comically mismatched couples.
