We long, we dream, we ail, we labor, we try and fail to control, we are overwhelmed, and yet, we find bliss and comfort in the middle of it all. We know what we feel and we remember it. As our BA Seniors bid farewell to Stamps, we share this gift of our work, tied lovingly with a bow.\r\n\r\nThe Bachelor of Arts (BA) Senior Studio (ARTDES 401) is offered for Stamps BA students in their final year of study. The BA Senior Studio Exhibition offers these students the opportunity to build on the particular characteristics of the BA degree, and focus on creating and exhibiting a culminating, self-directed project. Students work independently or collaboratively to define a project plan with goals, benchmarks, and a timeline. \r\n\r\nThe BA Senior Studio Exhibition is a new tradition for Stamps, with the inaugural show taking place in Fall 2024. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors), young folx, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories, as well as those of survivance and resilience, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing, thinking, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women\u2019s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works, including 15-17 new works. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home, placemaking, labor, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa\u2019s grandmother who illegally crossed the US\/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist\u2019s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist, educator, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine\/x\/a\/o studies. Born and raised in Texas, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting, bead weaving, embroidery, jewelry, transparent film installations, painting, ceramics, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story, re-make, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx, Chicanx, Mexican, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania), Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas, TX). While the rain can be intense, it is also very meditative and symbolic of washing yourself clean of the past. The solo acts as the last look at the relationship before letting it go.\n\nSarah Gorman\u2019s group piece, *Weaving Hearts*, focuses on the complex ways in which people are perceived and act differently in every interaction. The dance will explore the complexities and roles of relationships and their function in our everyday lives: lighthearted, carefree, and heartbreaking. Gorman\u2019s piece will celebrate girlhood and friendship. Creating a quilt of vignettes to illuminate the colorful fabric of the human experience. Gorman\u2019s solo Emendemus in Melius will illuminate overcoming challenges in life and how beautiful it is for one to persevere. It was Christmastime and apparently they thought we were up to the task. We worked up a few carols and traditional tunes and Karin even read a poem by Thomas Hardy called, The Oxen.\r\n\r\nIt actually felt really good and conjured up an unusual mix of feelings from childhood: innocence, loss, wonder, joy, sadness. I think we were surprised. \r\n\r\nPeople must have tuned into the radio broadcast, because we began receiving inquiries as to whether we had recorded any of our Christmas songs. I don\u2019t think we had considered it at the time, but any young, struggling songwriter is open to the suggestions of the marketplace, and people were persistent.\r\n\r\nIn December of 1996 \u2013 can it really be over 25 years ago? \u2013 we recorded and released our first song cycle of some of the Christmas carols that still haunted us. We included a few original tunes and called our wintry mix The Darkest Night Of The Year. We played a special \u201cdarkest night\u201d release concert on winter solstice in an old 1300-seat theater in Cincinnati. Every last seat was full. Folks began snatching up copies and seemed to agree that they hadn\u2019t heard anything quite like it.\r\n\r\nWe began playing concerts around the Midwest every December and found that the rooms were usually packed full of people who had bundled in out of the cold with prized compatriots. Hats and scarves abounded. If you stepped outside during intermission, you could make ghosts with your breath in the crisp night air. And it was dark \u2013 oh so dark: a time of year with its own music.\r\n\r\nA decade later, in 2006, we released our first full collection of original Christmas\/holiday songs called Snow Angels. What is it about Christmas music and the undeniable gravitational pull it exerts on some songwriters? So many Christmas songs have already been written. I think we are genuinely curious about the ones that haven\u2019t yet been written.\r\n\r\nWe continued to tour every December and these special year-winding-down concerts began to feel like an annual tradition \u2013 gatherings of extended musical family, without whom, we\u2019d be homeless.\r\n\r\nBy the time we released our third holiday album of original songs, Blood Oranges In The Snow, in December of 2014, Karin suggested we had discovered a new genre of music: Reality Christmas.\r\n\r\nIt\u2019s true: if you\u2019ve buried a loved one, or lost a job, or battled a chronic illness, that stuff doesn\u2019t go away during the holidays. It can be a complicated season for many of us.\r\n\r\nAnd then there\u2019s family.\r\n\r\nWhen Karin and I make the annual holiday pilgrimage home to visit family and pull into the driveway and turn off the car, one of us inevitably looks over at the other and says, \u201cTie a rope around my waist, I\u2019m goin\u2019 in.\u201d\r\n\r\nIn 2024, more than 25 years after releasing our first holiday CD, we are still at it. This year, we will be leaning into some harmonies and making an intimate but hopefully holy ruckus. It won\u2019t be all Christmas music: we\u2019ll certainly mix in tunes from many of our records along the way. But\r\nhopefully it\u2019s still true: hopefully you haven\u2019t heard anything quite like it.\r\n\r\nMaybe a midnight snow will fall and turn each streetlight into its own private snow globe.
