Lopez lost her sight at an early age and is mostly non-verbal. This exhibition of tactile assemblage works and gestural coiled pots were created by the artist through touch and texture, colored by memory. The works are sensory, physical, immediate, reaffirming, and deeply expressive. Viewers to this exhibition are invited to touch the work. \r\n\r\nDuring her residency, the artist and her support team, which includes her mother and translator, will engage directly with students in the exhibition space, offering a transformative experience based on human expression and connection through art. Because Ericka feels most comfortable when she is working, she plans to make artwork with students as part of the class engagements with the exhibition.\r\n\r\nAbout Ericka Lopez\r\nBorn 1987 in Mexico, Ericka Lopez has been making art at Tierra del Sol Studios since 2019. Working across ceramic, fiber, and mixed media constructions, Lopez\u2019s practice is centralized around her exploration of touch. Lopez was born with limited vision and is now completely blind. Lopez trained in massage therapy and previously volunteered at a soup kitchen when an encounter with Tierra\u2019s ceramics studio shifted her trajectory toward fine art. Her masterful command of clay hand-building techniques enables Lopez to create intricate, dynamic, and organically structured coil vessels. Lopez\u2019s works are informed by her finite recollection of color; she requests specific shades and combinations of glazes that generate spontaneous, distinctive surfaces when fired. This intuitive approach continues in her fiber wall works and mixed media sculptures. Utilizing punch rug embroidery, Lopez creates abstract fields of yarn and found objects, often repeatedly punching through the same area to yield densely layered sections. Lopez has learned to identify the color of her materials via scent and feel, a process that is difficult to put into words. Her mixed media sculptures are created almost entirely by touch, consisting of threads, buttons, beads, fabric scraps, and found objects instinctively stitched together using simple sewing techniques. Lopez hopes her works can be experienced through an inquiry of touch.\r\n\r\nEricka Lopez has exhibited her artwork at Laband Gallery and Tierra del Sol Gallery in Los Angeles, CA. Lopez\u2019s debut solo exhibition, \u201cContinuous Touch,\u201d was curated by jill moniz for Tierra del Sol Gallery in the Spring of 2023. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don\u2019t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.\u00a0\u00a0\n \nIn this online exhibition, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum\u2019s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. As FHWA Chief Counsel, she oversaw all aspects of FHWA\u2019s legal work to advise the federal-aid highway program and USDOT leadership on matters relating to the 2,900-person agency and its $71 billion annual budget. In this role, Kristin served as part of the FHWA senior leadership team and led professionals in four offices across the country, providing legal advice and strategic guidance on grant and program administration, federal legislation, regulatory affairs, environmental compliance, and all related litigation.\r\n\r\nPrior to joining FHWA, Kristin served as the Chief Operating Officer of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America), a nonprofit founded by Congress to advance safety and mobility through transportation technology and innovation. She also previously was the co-founder and Executive Director of Minnesota\u2019s Office of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV-X), one of the nation\u2019s leading tech startups and idea incubators within government that researches and deploys transformational technology and policy.\r\n\r\nKristin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Olaf College, a law degree from Hamline University School of Law and global arbitration certification from Queen Mary University of London. Existing approaches in this setting either face computational inefficiencies or rely on strong assumptions, such as ergodicity, to achieve order-optimal regret bounds. In this talk, we introduce a computationally efficient algorithm that attains an order-optimal regret bound under a mild assumption on the underlying MDP. The algorithm learns a discounted-reward MDP as a surrogate for the average-reward problem. Leveraging the contraction property of the associated Bellman operator for the surrogate problem, we design an optimistic value iteration algorithm and employ value function clipping technique for improving statistical efficiency.
