SUMMARY:Exhibition:Making it: $napshots from the Artist Pay Project
DESCRIPTION:The Artist Pay Project is an anonymous journalistic series that examines how artists survive and thrive through anonymous money diaries. Developed by 2022-2023 Knight-Wallace and the Ford School's Center for Racial Justice Fellow Makeda Easter\, the series includes interviews with over 30 artists from various disciplines — including visual arts\, dance\, film\, and drag — to understand how much artists are paid for their work\, how work is priced\, and how artists feel about their overall financial security. Making it: $napshots from the Artist Pay Project by Makeda Easter is a visually-immersive\, physical manifestation of this work\, advocating for both the value of art in our society and higher wages for working artists. \n\nMaking it: $napshots from the Artist Pay Project is sponsored by the U-M Arts Initiative and Impact Studio.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Multilevel Approximation Schemes for Value-at-Risk and Expected Shortfall
DESCRIPTION:Evaluating the risk associated to a portfolio is important to\nregulators\, market exchanges and investors. The value-at-risk (VaR)\nand expected shortfall (ES) remain the most widely used risk measures\nin finance. Given a portfolio of future random loss X and a confidence\nlevel c in (0\,1)\, the VaR represents the quantile of X at level c (P(X\nVaR) = 1-c) and the ES the average loss given that X exceeds the\nVaR\, i.e. the superquantile of X at level c (ES = E[X|X > VaR]).\n\nComputing efficiently the VaR and ES of a given portfolio constitutes\nan active field of research. Rockafeller and Uryasev (2000) show that\,\nunder suitable assumptions\, the VaR and ES can be jointly retrieved as\nsolutions to a stochastic convex program\, thus allowing to resort to\nstochastic approximation methods. In a realistic scenario\, the loss of\nthe portfolio is expressed in a nested way\, i.e. X = E[f(Y\, Z)|Y]\,\nwhere Y describes the risk factors influencing the portfolio up to\nsome time horizon T > 0\, Z the risk factors influencing it beyond T\,\nand f(Y\, Z) the subsequent cash flows. The conditioning is done with\nrespect to the information available at time T. When X cannot be\nsimulated exactly\, a natural solution consists in swapping X with a\nnested Monte Carlo estimate thereof within the stochastic\napproximation scheme for the VaR and ES. This solution nevertheless\nincreases the estimation complexity.\n\nWe endeavor to accelerate the stochastic approximation of the VaR and\nES in the nested loss case. The goalpost is to attain a quadratic\ncomplexity as is achieved by unbiased stochastic approximation in the\ncase where X can be simulated exactly.\nWe first present a nested stochastic approximation scheme\, which\nsimulates X with a bias\, and attains a complexity in O(n^3) to achieve\nan error in O(1/n). We then leverage the multilevel paradigm to bring\nthe estimation cost down to O(n^2.5) for the VaR and to O(n^2 ln(n)^2)\nfor the ES. Since these complexities can only be reached under\nadditional inaccessible conditions\, we develop an ergodic\nPolyak-Ruppert version of the multilevel algorithm and demonstrate its\nincreased numerical stability through appropriate central limit\ntheorems. Eventually\, to bridge the performance gap between the\nmultilevel and unbiased VaR schemes (in O(n^2.5) and O(n^2))\, we\nadaptively refine the Monte Carlo innovations digested by the\nmultilevel algorithm\, resulting in a complexity of O(n^2 ln(n)^2.5).\nAll the above results are exemplified through suitable numerical\nstudies that include realistic financial scenarios.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Steve Glazer Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glazer earned his BFA in art with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University\, a master’s degree in art from Central Michigan University\, and MFA in fine arts and ceramics from Indiana State University. Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. After returning home to Detroit\, Glazer began his griot series\, the “Motor City Griot Society” masks\, the faces of the superheroes that will save Detroit\, and more recently the “Motor City Griot Patrol” creatures that will protect the city of Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Susan Moran Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Susan Moran’s work is inspired by the natural world and our place in it. She collects and arranges images\, builds and subtracts\, and uses processes that suit the concepts and gives the pieces a reason for existing as textiles. Simultaneously she strives to make the medium influence the outcome in such a way that cloth and image meld together. Moran uses silkscreen\, shibori\, and stitching to embed images from her daily walks into the fabric. it's important that the work builds slowly\, involving meditative processes that connect her to the cloth and the source of the design.\n\nGallery hours: Monday-Friday\, 9 am to 5pm or by appointment serrag@med.umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Touch
DESCRIPTION:Ericka Lopez is a visual artist born in Mexico and living in Los Angeles. Lopez lost her sight at an early age and is mostly non-verbal. This exhibition of tactile assemblage works and gestural coiled pots were created by the artist through touch and texture\, colored by memory. The works are sensory\, physical\, immediate\, reaffirming\, and deeply expressive. Viewers to this exhibition are invited to touch the work. \n\nDuring her residency\, the artist and her support team\, which includes her mother and translator\, will engage directly with students in the exhibition space\, offering a transformative experience based on human expression and connection through art. Because Ericka feels most comfortable when she is working\, she plans to make artwork with students as part of the class engagements with the exhibition.\n\nAbout Ericka Lopez\nBorn 1987 in Mexico\, Ericka Lopez has been making art at Tierra del Sol Studios since 2019. Working across ceramic\, fiber\, and mixed media constructions\, Lopez’s practice is centralized around her exploration of touch. Lopez was born with limited vision and is now completely blind. Lopez trained in massage therapy and previously volunteered at a soup kitchen when an encounter with Tierra’s ceramics studio shifted her trajectory toward fine art. Her masterful command of clay hand-building techniques enables Lopez to create intricate\, dynamic\, and organically structured coil vessels. Lopez’s works are informed by her finite recollection of color\; she requests specific shades and combinations of glazes that generate spontaneous\, distinctive surfaces when fired. This intuitive approach continues in her fiber wall works and mixed media sculptures. Utilizing punch rug embroidery\, Lopez creates abstract fields of yarn and found objects\, often repeatedly punching through the same area to yield densely layered sections. Lopez has learned to identify the color of her materials via scent and feel\, a process that is difficult to put into words. Her mixed media sculptures are created almost entirely by touch\, consisting of threads\, buttons\, beads\, fabric scraps\, and found objects instinctively stitched together using simple sewing techniques. Lopez hopes her works can be experienced through an inquiry of touch.\n\nEricka Lopez has exhibited her artwork at Laband Gallery and Tierra del Sol Gallery in Los Angeles\, CA. Lopez’s debut solo exhibition\, “Continuous Touch\,” was curated by jill moniz for Tierra del Sol Gallery in the Spring of 2023. She has had works acquired by notable private collections such as that of Beth DeWoody and by the Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum at UC Long Beach.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Bittersweet Bliss
DESCRIPTION:On view December 4–15\, 2024 at Stamps Gallery.\n\nWe proudly present an exhibition that swirls through nine personal narratives of struggle\, self-knowledge\, and fantasy respectively. The imagined paired with the gut led to a collection of works that overload the senses\, and indulge in a decadence of material and ornamentation. These works conjure memories of the hospital stay\, the museum visit\, the family gathering\, and inexplicable bouts of nostalgia from a lineage that precedes us. We long\, we dream\, we ail\, we labor\, we try and fail to control\, we are overwhelmed\, and yet\, we find bliss and comfort in the middle of it all. We know what we feel and we remember it. As our BA Seniors bid farewell to Stamps\, we share this gift of our work\, tied lovingly with a bow.\n\nThe Bachelor of Arts (BA) Senior Studio (ARTDES 401) is offered for Stamps BA students in their final year of study. The BA Senior Studio Exhibition offers these students the opportunity to build on the particular characteristics of the BA degree\, and focus on creating and exhibiting a culminating\, self-directed project. Students work independently or collaboratively to define a project plan with goals\, benchmarks\, and a timeline. \n\nThe BA Senior Studio Exhibition is a new tradition for Stamps\, with the inaugural show taking place in Fall 2024. These students and instructors have worked collaboratively to produce a fully self-directed show from start to finish\, emphasizing the skills and practices associated with producing professional exhibitions\, in addition to their studio work. \n\nFaculty:\nNick Tobier\, Professor\nMichelle Cieloszczyk\, GSI\n\nBA Student Artists and Designers:\nMaria D'Ambrosio\nDanielle de Coster\nEsha Kumar\nPeyton Messner\nMaya Moufawad\nRia Garcia Rivera\nBenjamin Nicolas Seguin \nScott Wallace Smith\nSiyu Zhong

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:2024 Michigan Pioneer Fellows Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the upcoming Annual Michigan Pioneer Fellows Symposium\, when we will celebrate the invaluable research contributions of postdoctoral fellows and highlight the innovative work being done by Pioneer Fellows and other postdoctoral researchers across the University of Michigan. Registration is open through December 1. \n\n2024 Michigan Pioneer Fellows Symposium:\n1:00–6:00 p.m.\, December 11\, 2024\nBSRB Kahn Auditorium\n\nSchedule:\n1:00 Welcome and introductions\n1:05 Talks by Pioneer Fellows\n3:30 Keynote address: \"Capturing One-Carbon Chemistry\, One-Structural Snapshot at a Time\,\" Catherine Drennan\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Biology and Chemistry\, MIT\; Investigator and Professor\, Howard Hughes Medical Institute \n4:30 Poster session\n5:30 Concluding remarks and reception\n\nAbstract - Capturing One-Carbon Chemistry\, One-Structural Snapshot at a Time: Ni-Fe-S-cluster containing carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH) and acetyl-CoA synthase (ACS) play major roles in the global carbon cycle through the consumption of CO and CO2 gases\, the production of acetate\, and the breakdown of acetate for methane generation. In this presentation\, I will describe my lab's journey to understand the structural basis of one-carbon chemistry at Ni-Fe-S clusters. Our work shows that to perform the biological equivalent of the water-gas shift reaction (CO + H2O ⇔ CO2 + H2) and of the Monsanto process (\"syn gas\" to acetic acid)\, CODH/ACS enzymes use internal gas channels and employ dramatic conformational rearrangements. Our goal is to capture structural snapshots of CODH/ACS enzymes in order to visualize how nature produces and consumes greenhouse gases CO2 and methane using organometallic chemistry.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nCathy L. Drennan is the John and Dorothy Wilson Professor of Biochemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, and a Professor and Investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. During her AB in chemistry from Vassar College\, she worked with Professor Miriam Rossi and discovered her passion for X-ray crystallography and for vitamin B12. But she did not head straight to graduate school\, instead teaching high school in West Branch\, Iowa\, for three years. By day\, she taught chemistry\, biology\, and physics and by night\, she staged high school plays\, such as *The Importance of Being Earnest*. Realizing that teaching science and scientific research go hand in hand\, Cathy enrolled in a PhD program at the University of Michigan to more fully experience the world of research. Carrying out her graduate studies in biological chemistry with the late Professor Martha L. Ludwig\, Cathy used X-ray crystallography to show for the first time how vitamin B12 binds to a protein.\n\nFollowing postdoctoral studies with Professor Douglas C. Rees at Caltech\, Cathy joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her laboratory seeks to understand how nature harnesses and re-directs the reactivity of enzyme metallocenters to perform challenging reactions. By combining X-ray crystallography and electron microscopy with other biophysical methods\, the Drennan laboratory’s goal is to “visualize” molecular processes by obtaining snapshots of enzymes in action. Some of the proteins studied are newly characterized\, and others have eluded structural characterization due to issues of oxygen sensitivity\, conformational flexibility\, protein heterogeneity\, or structural complexity. The Drennan laboratory has specialized in tackling and solving these more challenging problems in structural biology. In total\, Drennan is an author on ~190 publications\, over 200 Protein Data Bank submissions\, and has given over 200 invited talks. Her research has been featured in the online seminar series https://www.ibiology.org/biochemistry/metalloproteins-in-action/.\n\nFor twenty of her twenty-five years at MIT\, Drennan has taught the large introductory science classes\, known as the science General Institute Requirements or GIRs. For fourteen years\, she taught 350-person-plus introductory chemistry class 5.111\, which is available online on the MIT OCW site (https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/chemistry/5-111sc-principles-of-chemical-science-fall-2014/) and for the past six years\, she taught the 250-500-person introductory biology class 7.012. In 2006\, Drennan was selected as a “Million Dollar Professor” by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute\, allowing her to run an education research group (separate from her biochemistry research group) for eight years. As part of her education program\, she co-authored a teacher training guide\,* What Every Teacher and Mentor Should Know: A Guide to Identifying and Reducing Stereotype Threat to Maximize Student Performance* and ran workshops based on this material all over the country and produced an online version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzTRzMf8kKE. She also created classroom material that showcases the importance of chemical principles to solving real world problems and diversity among chemists http://chemvideos.mit.edu. Drennan has also spoken in national forums about being dyslexic\, including on CBS Sunday Morning https://www.cbsnews.com/news /cracking-the-code-of-dyslexia/ and PBS’s RoadTrip Nation https://roadtripnation.com/leader/catherine-drennan. Her goal as an educator is to engender an appreciation for the disciplines of chemistry and biology and to convey that scientists are a diverse group of people. In her own research group\, Drennan has trained a total of eighty-eight undergraduate students\, forty graduate students\, and twenty-two postdocs.\n\nCathy has been recognized with both teaching and research awards\, including MIT’s Baker Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching\, MIT’s Edgerton Faculty Achievement Award\, a Sloan Fellowship\, an ASBMB-Schering-Plough Research Institute Scientific Achievement Award\, a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers\, a Searle Scholar Award\, the Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin Award from the Protein Society and the Rose Award from the ASBMB. She is an AAAS Fellow\, an ASBMB Fellow\, an ACA Fellow\, a MacVicar Faculty Fellow\, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. Cathy resides with her husband\, Boston University Professor Sean J. Elliott\, daughter Sammy\, labradoodle Casey\, and cat Lacie in Newton\, Massachusetts.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:An H-theorem for a conditional McKean-Vlasov process related to interacting diffusions on regular trees.
DESCRIPTION:Conditional McKean-Vlasov equations (CMVE) are nonlinear stochastic processes with applications to mean-field games with common noise\, stochastic Lagrangian models\, and entropic optimal transport. In this talk\, I will discuss my recent work with Kavita Ramanan on a CMVE known as the Markov local-field equation (MLFE) that arises in the study of interacting particle systems on sparse networks. We identify a Lyapunov function for the MLFE that we call the sparse free energy and prove a corresponding H-theorem. We then show that the stationary distributions of the MLFE are exactly the marginals of extremal continuous Gibbs measures on regular trees and obtain rates of convergence.
