SUMMARY:Exhibition:Making it: $napshots from the Artist Pay Project
DESCRIPTION:The Artist Pay Project is an anonymous journalistic series that examines how artists survive and thrive through anonymous money diaries. Developed by 2022-2023 Knight-Wallace and the Ford School's Center for Racial Justice Fellow Makeda Easter\, the series includes interviews with over 30 artists from various disciplines — including visual arts\, dance\, film\, and drag — to understand how much artists are paid for their work\, how work is priced\, and how artists feel about their overall financial security. Making it: $napshots from the Artist Pay Project by Makeda Easter is a visually-immersive\, physical manifestation of this work\, advocating for both the value of art in our society and higher wages for working artists. \n\nMaking it: $napshots from the Artist Pay Project is sponsored by the U-M Arts Initiative and Impact Studio.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Presentation:The QuadPlane small Uncrewed Aircraft System
DESCRIPTION:Chair: Prof. Ella Atkins\n\nAbstract:\nEmerging Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) aircraft designs offer electric Vertical Take Off and Landing (eVTOL) capability. Lift+Cruise configurations combine the efficiency of wing lift flight or \"cruise\" mode with a maneuverable vertical or “lift” mode for vertiport departure and approach. small Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (sUAS) can also benefit from the maneuverability and endurance of Lift+Cruise designs for missions including surveillance and package delivery. Numerous AAM designs have been proposed\, but industry aeropropulsion models are proprietary. This dissertation provides an open experimentally validated Lift+Cruise sUAS model and uses this model in defining energy efficient trajectories applicable to delivery\, surveillance\, and inspection applications. \n\nThe first contribution of this dissertation is the QuadPlane sUAS\, an easily manufactured and simple Lift+Cruise configuration combining quadrotor and fixed-wing aircraft structural elements and control effectors. QuadPlane wind tunnel experiments were conducted over a wide range of angles of attack and airspeeds in each of three QuadPlane flight modes. QuadPlane propulsion modules were characterized in lab and wind tunnel tests. Full-envelope dynamic models are presented based on surface fits for the three QuadPlane flight modes. \n\nThe second contribution is the development of multi-mode accelerated energy optimal traversal profiles between hover waypoint pairs with no wind and steady wind. A multi-variable optimization problem is formally defined and solved. Energy consumption over accelerated and cruise flight in each flight mode is modeled and analyzed to prove energy optimality of the proposed direct multi-mode traversal in zero wind. In steady wind\, this thesis defines constraints under which direct traversal is possible given wind magnitude and direction and an assumption that the Lift+Cruise aircraft points into the wind at each hover waypoint to maximize stability. The QuadPlane model is used to demonstrate optimal traversal properties across trajectory segments of varied length and acceleration limits with and without ambient wind.\n\nThe third contribution is definition and evaluation of an energy aware path planner and multi-mode guidance capability for Lift+Cruise sUAS with emphasis on sUAS coverage missions. A meta-level path planning function for energy aware coverage assigns the most energy efficient flight mode for each trajectory segment subject to segment length and performance constraints. QuadPlane nonlinear simulation and control modules are developed based on the experimentally validated model. Waypoint-based flight simulations are presented with zero and steady wind. Conventional aircraft and multicopter controllers are defined for Plane (cruise) and Quad (hover) flight modes\, while a novel combination of the two supports transition and sustained Hybrid mode flight offering flexibility in pitch angle within envelope constraints. A modified carrot guidance methodology with varying time horizon provides flexibility in prioritizing tracking accuracy or control robustness. Flight plan waypoints can be flexibly chosen from Hover\, Fly-Over\, Fly-By and Fly-Coverage options. QuadPlane flight simulations confirm accurate trajectory tracking and smooth transitions between flight modes.\n\nThis dissertation describes a novel Lift+Cruise sUAS design and experimental characterization of its performance and dynamics. Innovations include formal definition of Lift+Cruise traversals between hover waypoints and definition of Lift+Cruise trajectories for coverage missions. The QuadPlane is one of the first open Lift+Cruise sUAS models. Energy optimal trajectory solutions between hover waypoints provide a framework for future work to consider wind gusts\, altitude change\, and further refinement with optimal control.\n\nZoom link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/92566489824\, Passcode: 783620

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Steve Glazer Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glazer earned his BFA in art with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University\, a master’s degree in art from Central Michigan University\, and MFA in fine arts and ceramics from Indiana State University. Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. After returning home to Detroit\, Glazer began his griot series\, the “Motor City Griot Society” masks\, the faces of the superheroes that will save Detroit\, and more recently the “Motor City Griot Patrol” creatures that will protect the city of Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Susan Moran Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Susan Moran’s work is inspired by the natural world and our place in it. She collects and arranges images\, builds and subtracts\, and uses processes that suit the concepts and gives the pieces a reason for existing as textiles. Simultaneously she strives to make the medium influence the outcome in such a way that cloth and image meld together. Moran uses silkscreen\, shibori\, and stitching to embed images from her daily walks into the fabric. it's important that the work builds slowly\, involving meditative processes that connect her to the cloth and the source of the design.\n\nGallery hours: Monday-Friday\, 9 am to 5pm or by appointment serrag@med.umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Touch
DESCRIPTION:Ericka Lopez is a visual artist born in Mexico and living in Los Angeles. Lopez lost her sight at an early age and is mostly non-verbal. This exhibition of tactile assemblage works and gestural coiled pots were created by the artist through touch and texture\, colored by memory. The works are sensory\, physical\, immediate\, reaffirming\, and deeply expressive. Viewers to this exhibition are invited to touch the work. \n\nDuring her residency\, the artist and her support team\, which includes her mother and translator\, will engage directly with students in the exhibition space\, offering a transformative experience based on human expression and connection through art. Because Ericka feels most comfortable when she is working\, she plans to make artwork with students as part of the class engagements with the exhibition.\n\nAbout Ericka Lopez\nBorn 1987 in Mexico\, Ericka Lopez has been making art at Tierra del Sol Studios since 2019. Working across ceramic\, fiber\, and mixed media constructions\, Lopez’s practice is centralized around her exploration of touch. Lopez was born with limited vision and is now completely blind. Lopez trained in massage therapy and previously volunteered at a soup kitchen when an encounter with Tierra’s ceramics studio shifted her trajectory toward fine art. Her masterful command of clay hand-building techniques enables Lopez to create intricate\, dynamic\, and organically structured coil vessels. Lopez’s works are informed by her finite recollection of color\; she requests specific shades and combinations of glazes that generate spontaneous\, distinctive surfaces when fired. This intuitive approach continues in her fiber wall works and mixed media sculptures. Utilizing punch rug embroidery\, Lopez creates abstract fields of yarn and found objects\, often repeatedly punching through the same area to yield densely layered sections. Lopez has learned to identify the color of her materials via scent and feel\, a process that is difficult to put into words. Her mixed media sculptures are created almost entirely by touch\, consisting of threads\, buttons\, beads\, fabric scraps\, and found objects instinctively stitched together using simple sewing techniques. Lopez hopes her works can be experienced through an inquiry of touch.\n\nEricka Lopez has exhibited her artwork at Laband Gallery and Tierra del Sol Gallery in Los Angeles\, CA. Lopez’s debut solo exhibition\, “Continuous Touch\,” was curated by jill moniz for Tierra del Sol Gallery in the Spring of 2023. She has had works acquired by notable private collections such as that of Beth DeWoody and by the Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum at UC Long Beach.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Bittersweet Bliss
DESCRIPTION:On view December 4–15\, 2024 at Stamps Gallery.\n\nWe proudly present an exhibition that swirls through nine personal narratives of struggle\, self-knowledge\, and fantasy respectively. The imagined paired with the gut led to a collection of works that overload the senses\, and indulge in a decadence of material and ornamentation. These works conjure memories of the hospital stay\, the museum visit\, the family gathering\, and inexplicable bouts of nostalgia from a lineage that precedes us. We long\, we dream\, we ail\, we labor\, we try and fail to control\, we are overwhelmed\, and yet\, we find bliss and comfort in the middle of it all. We know what we feel and we remember it. As our BA Seniors bid farewell to Stamps\, we share this gift of our work\, tied lovingly with a bow.\n\nThe Bachelor of Arts (BA) Senior Studio (ARTDES 401) is offered for Stamps BA students in their final year of study. The BA Senior Studio Exhibition offers these students the opportunity to build on the particular characteristics of the BA degree\, and focus on creating and exhibiting a culminating\, self-directed project. Students work independently or collaboratively to define a project plan with goals\, benchmarks\, and a timeline. \n\nThe BA Senior Studio Exhibition is a new tradition for Stamps\, with the inaugural show taking place in Fall 2024. These students and instructors have worked collaboratively to produce a fully self-directed show from start to finish\, emphasizing the skills and practices associated with producing professional exhibitions\, in addition to their studio work. \n\nFaculty:\nNick Tobier\, Professor\nMichelle Cieloszczyk\, GSI\n\nBA Student Artists and Designers:\nMaria D'Ambrosio\nDanielle de Coster\nEsha Kumar\nPeyton Messner\nMaya Moufawad\nRia Garcia Rivera\nBenjamin Nicolas Seguin \nScott Wallace Smith\nSiyu Zhong

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Walter J. Weber\, Jr.
Distinguished Lecture in Environmental and Energy Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Join us in honor of Dr. Weber's remarkable 46-year legacy at the University of Michigan\, where his impact as a scientist\, educator\, and mentor truly shaped the field of environmental engineering. Celebrated as one of the \"One Hundred Engineers of the Modern Era\" by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers\, his esteemed career is an inspiration to us all. Don't miss this opportunity to connect at the lecture that continues his tradition of excellence and innovation and encourage your students to do the same!\n\nA reception\, featuring light refreshments\, will be held in the B18 Dining Hall at NCRC from 12:45 p.m. to 1:25 p.m. The lecture will commence at 1:30 p.m. and will conclude at 2:30 p.m. A question and answer session will follow from 2:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. The event will conclude with closing remarks from 2:45 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.\n\nSeminar Title:\n\"Ionic Compatibilization of Plastics to Reduce Environmental Impacts\"\n\nAbstract: \nWe simultaneously associate plastics with both waste in the form of massive landfill requirements and a tendency to escape into sensitive ecosystems and also as a potential solution to energy and climate crises in the form of cheap\, lightweight\, safe batteries and other energy devices. In both cases\, however\, one attribute of polymers is simultaneously its greatest flaw and a tremendous opportunity in terms of improved performance: processibility. The inability to recycle plastics is at least in part rooted in the array of chemically dissimilar commodity plastics on the market and our inability to recycle such a mixed stream. In this talk\, I will demonstrate the tremendous utility of electrostatic interactions in reducing the potential environmental impacts of plastics. For example\, we have recently demonstrated that incorporating even a single charged group per polymer chain causes highly immiscible polymers to form homogeneous blends with high mechanical strength. Similar electrostatic attractions are so strong as to force conjugated (conducting polymers) to form high solids loading solutions that have shown great utility as battery binders. \n\nBio: \nRachel A. Segalman received her B.S. from the University of Texas at Austin and Ph.D. from the University of California\, Santa Barbara. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Université Louis Pasteur before joining the faculty of UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories from 2004-2014 during a portion of this time she also served as the Materials Science Division Director at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories. In 2014\, she moved to UC Santa Barbara to be the Kramer Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials and became Department Chair of Chemical Engineering in 2015. In 2018 she also became the Schlinger Distinguished Chair of Chemical Engineering and the Associate Director of the UT/UCSB/LBL EFRC: Center for Materials for Water and Energy Systems. Segalman’s group works on controlling the structure and thermodynamics of functional polymers including polymeric ionic liquids and semiconducting and bioinspired polymers. Among other awards\, Segalman received the Journal of Polymer Science Innovation Award\, the Dillon Medal from the American Physical Society\, the Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering\, is an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow and a Camille Dreyfus Teacher Scholar. She is also a Fellow of the American Physical Society\, an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Materials Research Society.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Dissertation Defense: A Multi-Model\, Data-Driven Approach to Studying Tumor-Immune Dynamics and Immunotherapy Efficacy
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nImmunotherapy has dramatically transformed the cancer treatment landscape largely due to the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). Although ICIs have shown promising results for many patients\, they do not exhibit the same level of effectiveness across all cancers and individuals. To determine the critical factors affecting responses to ICIs and hypothesize optimal treatment strategies\, we develop mathematical and computational models for in vivo tumor-immune dynamics involving the PD-1/PD-L1 immune checkpoint and ICIs. Our models are the first to incorporate tumor cells of high and low antigenicity and two distinct cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) killing mechanisms\, with the preferred mechanism depending on the antigenicity of tumor cells.\n\nWe leverage the predicative power of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and agent-based models (ABMs). Continuous ODEs allow rapid simulations at a realistic scale but cannot describe the spatial structure in the tumor microenvironment. ABMs can model more detailed spatial heterogeneity that better reflects the complexity seen in vivo. Using both models\, we construct virtual cohorts with diverse tumor and immune attributes to simulate the therapeutic outcomes in a heterogeneous population. We reveal relationships between the parameters and the volume or phenotypic composition of tumors to thus identity key tumor or immune characteristics associated with tumor elimination\, dormancy\, and escape. In addition\, we underscore the importance of including spatial components in computational models of immunotherapy by elucidating the additional insights that the ABM provides regarding the spatial complexities of the TME and their impact on therapeutic outcomes.\n\nWe then highlight the necessity of sufficient experimental data and identifiability analysis to reliable model predictions of post-treatment outcomes by the ODE model. Without experimental data\, we create a virtual cohort of mice by randomly sampling the parameter space. With in vivo data\, we perform practical identifiability analysis to estimate the distributions of key model parameters. We show that virtual cohorts constructed from random sampling or distributions of unidentifiable parameters due to limited data yield a wide range of numerical predictions and overestimate the efficacy of ICIs. Moreover\, adequate quantities and varieties of data are required for the practical identifiability of key immune parameters and the construction of realistic virtual cohorts\, which in turn produce accurate and precise numerical predictions\, such as percentage reduction of tumor volume and survival proportion of virtual mice after aPDL1 treatment.\n\nFurthermore\, we discuss the application of machine learning (ML) techniques to address a primary limitation of ABMs — their high computational costs. We demonstrate that it is possible to predict post-treatment tumor outcomes and tumor volume trajectory from parameters of the ABM and a brief ABM simulation period by training an ML surrogate model. Our proposed workflow suggests an effective way to reduce computational time of ABMs by potentially eliminating the need to simulate the ABM until equilibrium or using ML models trained on smaller-scale simulations to predict outcomes of larger-scale simulations.\n\nData-driven and biologically informed mathematical models of cancer control strategies are a powerful complement to experimental studies. A multi-model approach identifies critical patterns and uncovers underlying mechanisms in the tumor microenvironment that drive cancer progression and therapeutic resistance. Our methodology can be adapted to systematically explore a wide range of questions related to tumor-immune dynamics and immunotherapy. The proposed modeling framework can also provide valuable insights for the rational design of pre-clinical experiments and clinical trials.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Central Asian Food and Film Night\, Dec 12th\, with the Central Asian Studies RIW
DESCRIPTION:The Central Asian Studies RIW is hosting an end of the semester celebration centered around both food and film. On December 12th from 4:00pm to 6:30pm in Tisch 1014 we will have both plov and boorsoks. Plov\, or osh in Uzbek\, is a dish that consists mainly of rice\, meat (beef or  lamb)\, carrots\, and\, often\, garlic. It can vary immensely not only country to country inside of Central Asia\, but city to city\, or even village to village.  Meanwhile\, boorsak is a type of small fried bread made in Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia. One might have it with a bit of sugar\, jam or simply plain as is. Both plov and boorsok are typical foods to be found at celebrations in Central Asia (be they the welcoming of guests\, the successful defense of a dissertation\, or a wedding).  Our celebration will mark the end of the semester and also our first \"film night\" (a tradition we will aim to continue annually). All of plov and boorsok will be prepared by   Baktygul Chynybaeva\, a current Knight-Wallace  at the University of Michigan and a correspondent for Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty’s Central Newsroom in Prague. \nIn addition to the food ( which will again will consist of plov\, boorsok and some additional snacks)\, we will watch and then have a casual discussion of the 2014 Kyrgyz film \, Kurmanjan Datka: Queen of the Mountains (trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIjhRQUsj_8 ). This film  centers around the real figure of Kurmanjan Datka: a Kyrgyz political leader born into the Mungush clan in the Osh region (now the south of modern-day Kyrgyzstan) \, she was known as the Altai Queen and ruled during the Russian empire's annexation of this region and the remnants of the Kokand Khanate in 1876. Statues to this important historical figure can be found in the modern-day cities of Bishkek and Osh in Kyrgyzstan\, and she also appears on the 50 Kyrgyz Som banknote. The movie\, which will have English subtitles\, will focus on Kurmanjan Datka's path to power\, herdealings with the Russians\, and reactions to her sons' discontent with Russian rule. The film will run 2 hours and 11 minutes long. We will plan to start the film at 4:05 and then have a brief\, casual (and ideally fun) conversation following the film. Via the film\, we will hope to touch on topics ranging from 19th century politics\, to gender\, to why a film regarding a Russian invasion might have been made in Kyrgyzstan in 2014. \n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:FAST Lecture | Recent Research on Metal and Metallurgical Artifacts\, Craft Production\, and Interaction on Prehistoric Kea
DESCRIPTION:This presentation provides an overview of recent work on prehistoric Kea (Cyclades\, Greece)\, which has focused on characterizing and contextualizing metal and metallurgical artifacts from two sites in the northwestern part of the island\, Kephala and Ayia Irini. Final Neolithic Kephala has produced some of the earliest evidence for metallurgy in the southern Aegean (4th millennium BCE). Metallurgical tools and debris have also been found at the long-lived site of Ayia Irini\, in deposits dating from the Final Neolithic through the Late Bronze Age (4th–2nd millennium BCE). Participation in exchange and metallurgy seems to have been crucial to the local economy throughout these eras. This rich assemblage enables an investigation of how metallurgists on Kea were integrated into local and regional networks over the long term.\n\nNatalie Abell is an associate professor of classical archaeology and the director of the Interdepartmental Program in Ancient Mediterranean Art and Archaeology.\n\nThis event will take place in Room 125 of the Kelsey Museum’s Newberry Hall. Light refreshments and food will be provided before the lecture\, which will begin at 6 PM.\n\nFAST (Field Archaeology Series on Thursday) lectures are free and open to the public. If you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event\, please visit our accessibility page at https://myumi.ch/zwPkd or contact the education office by calling (734) 647-4167. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

DESCRIPTION:Attend the December session of our monthly Kelsey Book Club! This event is open to all adults who have an interest in fiction\, mythology\, and the ancient world. Learn more about this program at https://myumi.ch/Drn1Q. \n\nNataly Gruender’s debut novel *Medusa* (2024) offers “an intimate look into the life of a legendary mythical villain who has so often been stripped of her voice and humanity.” Medusa’s life is forever altered following a horrific violation by Poseidon. SUMMARY:Performance:Ariel Quartet with Alisa Weilerstein\, cello | Folk•lore
DESCRIPTION:For centuries and across continents\, folk music has influenced art music. The lines separating the two genres are often blurred\, resulting in new sound worlds and revolutionary compositional styles.\n\nThis program\, entitled folk·lore\, explores this gray zone between the two styles through a “dialogue” between solo cello and string quartet\, with all five artists performing an uninterrupted suite of traditional folk music from around the world along with pieces dating back to the origins of Western classical music. These works remain unannounced to keep this part of the journey free of expectations\, stimulating a sense of community by triggering a novel sense of musical discovery and adventure.\n\nThe second half features one of the most essential and influential works in the classical music repertoire: Schubert’s Cello Quintet in C Major\, the last movement of which skillfully weaves together folk and art music through rhythmic and harmonic patterns characteristic of the Romani music of Hungary.\n\nPROGRAM\nOriginal works and transcriptions arranged by the Ariel Quartet\nand Alisa Weilerstein\nFranz Schubert Cello Quintet in C Major\, Op. 163\, D. 956
