Lift+Cruise configurations combine the efficiency of wing lift flight or \"cruise\" mode with a maneuverable vertical or \u201clift\u201d mode for vertiport departure and approach. small Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (sUAS) can also benefit from the maneuverability and endurance of Lift+Cruise designs for missions including surveillance and package delivery. Numerous AAM designs have been proposed, but industry aeropropulsion models are proprietary. This dissertation provides an open experimentally validated Lift+Cruise sUAS model and uses this model in defining energy efficient trajectories applicable to delivery, surveillance, and inspection applications. \r\n\r\nThe first contribution of this dissertation is the QuadPlane sUAS, an easily manufactured and simple Lift+Cruise configuration combining quadrotor and fixed-wing aircraft structural elements and control effectors. QuadPlane wind tunnel experiments were conducted over a wide range of angles of attack and airspeeds in each of three QuadPlane flight modes. QuadPlane propulsion modules were characterized in lab and wind tunnel tests. Full-envelope dynamic models are presented based on surface fits for the three QuadPlane flight modes. \r\n\r\nThe second contribution is the development of multi-mode accelerated energy optimal traversal profiles between hover waypoint pairs with no wind and steady wind. A multi-variable optimization problem is formally defined and solved. Energy consumption over accelerated and cruise flight in each flight mode is modeled and analyzed to prove energy optimality of the proposed direct multi-mode traversal in zero wind. In steady wind, this thesis defines constraints under which direct traversal is possible given wind magnitude and direction and an assumption that the Lift+Cruise aircraft points into the wind at each hover waypoint to maximize stability. The QuadPlane model is used to demonstrate optimal traversal properties across trajectory segments of varied length and acceleration limits with and without ambient wind.\r\n\r\nThe third contribution is definition and evaluation of an energy aware path planner and multi-mode guidance capability for Lift+Cruise sUAS with emphasis on sUAS coverage missions. A meta-level path planning function for energy aware coverage assigns the most energy efficient flight mode for each trajectory segment subject to segment length and performance constraints. QuadPlane nonlinear simulation and control modules are developed based on the experimentally validated model. Waypoint-based flight simulations are presented with zero and steady wind. Conventional aircraft and multicopter controllers are defined for Plane (cruise) and Quad (hover) flight modes, while a novel combination of the two supports transition and sustained Hybrid mode flight offering flexibility in pitch angle within envelope constraints. A modified carrot guidance methodology with varying time horizon provides flexibility in prioritizing tracking accuracy or control robustness. Flight plan waypoints can be flexibly chosen from Hover, Fly-Over, Fly-By and Fly-Coverage options. QuadPlane flight simulations confirm accurate trajectory tracking and smooth transitions between flight modes.\r\n\r\nThis dissertation describes a novel Lift+Cruise sUAS design and experimental characterization of its performance and dynamics. Innovations include formal definition of Lift+Cruise traversals between hover waypoints and definition of Lift+Cruise trajectories for coverage missions. The QuadPlane is one of the first open Lift+Cruise sUAS models. Lopez trained in massage therapy and previously volunteered at a soup kitchen when an encounter with Tierra\u2019s ceramics studio shifted her trajectory toward fine art. Her masterful command of clay hand-building techniques enables Lopez to create intricate, dynamic, and organically structured coil vessels. Lopez\u2019s works are informed by her finite recollection of color; she requests specific shades and combinations of glazes that generate spontaneous, distinctive surfaces when fired. This intuitive approach continues in her fiber wall works and mixed media sculptures. Utilizing punch rug embroidery, Lopez creates abstract fields of yarn and found objects, often repeatedly punching through the same area to yield densely layered sections. Lopez has learned to identify the color of her materials via scent and feel, a process that is difficult to put into words. Her mixed media sculptures are created almost entirely by touch, consisting of threads, buttons, beads, fabric scraps, and found objects instinctively stitched together using simple sewing techniques. Lopez hopes her works can be experienced through an inquiry of touch.\r\n\r\nEricka Lopez has exhibited her artwork at Laband Gallery and Tierra del Sol Gallery in Los Angeles, CA. As our BA Seniors bid farewell to Stamps, we share this gift of our work, tied lovingly with a bow.\r\n\r\nThe Bachelor of Arts (BA) Senior Studio (ARTDES 401) is offered for Stamps BA students in their final year of study. The BA Senior Studio Exhibition offers these students the opportunity to build on the particular characteristics of the BA degree, and focus on creating and exhibiting a culminating, self-directed project. Students work independently or collaboratively to define a project plan with goals, benchmarks, and a timeline. \r\n\r\nThe BA Senior Studio Exhibition is a new tradition for Stamps, with the inaugural show taking place in Fall 2024. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa\u2019s grandmother who illegally crossed the US\/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist\u2019s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist, educator, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine\/x\/a\/o studies. Born and raised in Texas, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting, bead weaving, embroidery, jewelry, transparent film installations, painting, ceramics, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. In both cases, however, one attribute of polymers is simultaneously its greatest flaw and a tremendous opportunity in terms of improved performance: processibility. The inability to recycle plastics is at least in part rooted in the array of chemically dissimilar commodity plastics on the market and our inability to recycle such a mixed stream. In this talk, I will demonstrate the tremendous utility of electrostatic interactions in reducing the potential environmental impacts of plastics. For example, we have recently demonstrated that incorporating even a single charged group per polymer chain causes highly immiscible polymers to form homogeneous blends with high mechanical strength. Similar electrostatic attractions are so strong as to force conjugated (conducting polymers) to form high solids loading solutions that have shown great utility as battery binders. \r\n\r\nBio: \r\nRachel A. Segalman received her B.S. from the University of Texas at Austin and Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Universit\u00e9 Louis Pasteur before joining the faculty of UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories from 2004-2014 during a portion of this time she also served as the Materials Science Division Director at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories. In 2014, she moved to UC Santa Barbara to be the Kramer Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials and became Department Chair of Chemical Engineering in 2015. In 2018 she also became the Schlinger Distinguished Chair of Chemical Engineering and the Associate Director of the UT\/UCSB\/LBL EFRC: Center for Materials for Water and Energy Systems. Although ICIs have shown promising results for many patients, they do not exhibit the same level of effectiveness across all cancers and individuals. To determine the critical factors affecting responses to ICIs and hypothesize optimal treatment strategies, we develop mathematical and computational models for in vivo tumor-immune dynamics involving the PD-1\/PD-L1 immune checkpoint and ICIs. Our models are the first to incorporate tumor cells of high and low antigenicity and two distinct cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) killing mechanisms, with the preferred mechanism depending on the antigenicity of tumor cells.\r\n\r\nWe leverage the predicative power of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and agent-based models (ABMs). Continuous ODEs allow rapid simulations at a realistic scale but cannot describe the spatial structure in the tumor microenvironment. ABMs can model more detailed spatial heterogeneity that better reflects the complexity seen in vivo. Using both models, we construct virtual cohorts with diverse tumor and immune attributes to simulate the therapeutic outcomes in a heterogeneous population. We reveal relationships between the parameters and the volume or phenotypic composition of tumors to thus identity key tumor or immune characteristics associated with tumor elimination, dormancy, and escape. In addition, we underscore the importance of including spatial components in computational models of immunotherapy by elucidating the additional insights that the ABM provides regarding the spatial complexities of the TME and their impact on therapeutic outcomes.\r\n\r\nWe then highlight the necessity of sufficient experimental data and identifiability analysis to reliable model predictions of post-treatment outcomes by the ODE model. Without experimental data, we create a virtual cohort of mice by randomly sampling the parameter space. With in vivo data, we perform practical identifiability analysis to estimate the distributions of key model parameters. We show that virtual cohorts constructed from random sampling or distributions of unidentifiable parameters due to limited data yield a wide range of numerical predictions and overestimate the efficacy of ICIs. Moreover, adequate quantities and varieties of data are required for the practical identifiability of key immune parameters and the construction of realistic virtual cohorts, which in turn produce accurate and precise numerical predictions, such as percentage reduction of tumor volume and survival proportion of virtual mice after aPDL1 treatment.\r\n\r\nFurthermore, we discuss the application of machine learning (ML) techniques to address a primary limitation of ABMs \u2014 their high computational costs. We demonstrate that it is possible to predict post-treatment tumor outcomes and tumor volume trajectory from parameters of the ABM and a brief ABM simulation period by training an ML surrogate model. Our proposed workflow suggests an effective way to reduce computational time of ABMs by potentially eliminating the need to simulate the ABM until equilibrium or using ML models trained on smaller-scale simulations to predict outcomes of larger-scale simulations.\r\n\r\nData-driven and biologically informed mathematical models of cancer control strategies are a powerful complement to experimental studies. A multi-model approach identifies critical patterns and uncovers underlying mechanisms in the tumor microenvironment that drive cancer progression and therapeutic resistance. Our methodology can be adapted to systematically explore a wide range of questions related to tumor-immune dynamics and immunotherapy. All of plov and boorsok will be prepared by \u00a0 Baktygul Chynybaeva, a current Knight-Wallace \u00a0at the University of Michigan and a correspondent for Radio Free Europe \/ Radio Liberty\u2019s Central Newsroom in Prague.\u00a0\nIn addition to the food ( which will again will consist of plov, boorsok and some additional snacks), we will watch and then have a casual discussion of the 2014 Kyrgyz film ,\u00a0Kurmanjan Datka: Queen of the Mountains (trailer: https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yIjhRQUsj_8 ). This film \u00a0centers around the real figure of Kurmanjan Datka: a Kyrgyz political leader born into the\u00a0Mungush clan in the Osh region (now the south of modern-day Kyrgyzstan) , she was known as the Altai Queen and ruled during the Russian empire's annexation of this region and the remnants of the Kokand Khanate in 1876. Statues to this important historical figure can be found in the modern-day cities of Bishkek and Osh in Kyrgyzstan, and she also appears on the 50 Kyrgyz Som banknote. The movie, which will have English subtitles, will focus on Kurmanjan Datka's path to power, herdealings with the Russians, and reactions to her sons' discontent with Russian rule. The film will run 2 hours and 11 minutes long. We will plan to start the film at 4:05 and then have a brief, casual (and ideally fun) conversation following the film.
