SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Red Summer: Racial Violence in the American Landscape\, 1917-1923
DESCRIPTION:The Red Summer portfolio represents the stories of various locations in the American landscape where racial violence (often characterized as “Race Wars” at the time) erupted between 1917 and 1923. These years of conflict reveal several aspects of racial anxiety that inform our contemporary experience\, including\, though not limited to\; racism\, fear of violent black revolt\, lynching\, poverty\, mass incarceration\, and competition for employment. The term “Red Summer” was first used by James Weldon Johnson to describe the violent attacks against black communities during 1919. \n\nThough the events of the early twentieth century seem to be remote and fading apparitions of an American past\; my work is concerned with the power and influence of our shared historical narrative upon the present. The upheaval of Red Summer occurred approximately fifty years after the American Civil War\, fifty years before the height of the Civil Rights Era\, and three centuries after the first enslaved Africans arrived in English colonies that would become the United States. \n\nThe project combines photographs of the contemporary landscape made at or near the site of racial conflict with fragmented selections of contemporaneous newspaper reporting (1917-1923). In many cases\, the newsprint images include the surrounding stories or advertisements. The combination of the landscape photograph and the reproduction of newspaper fragments (which invade the contemporary with a narrative from the past)\, is a rupture and a conversation on the timeline between past and present.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Bibliophile and the Library: Private-Press Books from the Collection of Bill Heidrich
DESCRIPTION:View beautifully illustrated books that stand as remarkable testaments to the work of twentieth-century small private presses\, which\, in contrast to the trend of mass commercialization\, produced limited editions that celebrated the uniqueness of manual craftsmanship. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:More than Gray: Reimagining Early America in Full Color
DESCRIPTION:The American past was lived in full color\, but this vibrant history can be easily missed in surviving evidence. You can’t deny that there’s something about a black-and-white photograph that feels… stuffy. With portraits showing people with their shirts buttoned right to the neck and everything in shades of gray and brown\, our imaginations can incline to thinking of the past as a bit staid\, if not downright dull. But look a little closer\, and you’ll see signs that the fashion choices available to those who came before us were more colorful than you might first think. From the fabrics they wore\, to the games they played\, or the books they read\, their world was alive with bright hues. This exhibit invites you to reimagine history with a fuller color palette and picture the vibrancy and joy that just might be hidden behind the unsmiling photographs.\n\nExhibition opening weekdays from 12-4.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Suspicious Gifts\, Skeptical Words: (Semi)Colonial Speculations in Anglo-Persian Encounters
DESCRIPTION:With the “Hear\, Here” series\, we aim to facilitate conversations around new research in the humanities. Faculty fellows at the Institute for the Humanities will discuss a part of their current project in a short talk followed by a Q & A session.\n\nAbout this talk:\nThis talk explores the intersection of the economic and the linguistic and the confusions thereof in interactions between English and Persian during the long nineteenth century. Underscoring contested moments in transcultural exchange—when a presumed gift turns out to be a commodity or a bribe—I show\, negotiations over exchange circularly feed into testy bargains over naming and translation. Economic speculations entail speculations about the linguistic tissue that contextualizes a given exchange. Expressions of pleasantry and generosity begin to pose a glitch in colonial and semi-colonial encounters with the other\, disturbing the illusion of transparency at the heart of the colonial idea of economic modernity.\n\nNiloofar Sarlati is a 2024-25 John Rich Faculty Fellow at the Institute for the Humanities and Assistant Professor of English and Comparative Literature.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Atomic Ligands on Iron
DESCRIPTION:Atomic ligands are found in key intermediates for a number of enzymatic and heterogeneous catalysis\, such as industrial ammonia synthesis and biological hydrocarbon oxidation. Molecular complexes can provide well-defined molecular models that provide chemical insight into structure and bonding\, spectroscopy\, and reactivity of these often transient species. Synthesis of these complexes is often highly challenging\, and molecular design can play a critical role in enabling access. In a long-standing project\, we have shown that a modular family of strong donor ligands are able to enforce three-fold symmetry at metal ions\, providing a platform for stabilizing iron complexes containing metal-ligand multiple bonds. In early work\, we demonstrated that isolable nitride complexes are active in multielectron nitrogen atom transfer reactions to a variety of substrates\, including unsaturated hydrocarbons. Further elaboration of nitrogen atom transfer as a synthetic strategy has enabled the construction of new ligands and binuclear complexes. More recently\, we have successfully created iron complexes with other multiply bonded atomic ligands\, including oxo\, sulfido and carbide. The accumulating library of complexes provides the foundation for ongoing studies aimed at understanding underlying trends in the fundamental reactions of these multiply bonded atomic ligands.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Double Feature
DESCRIPTION:Qiuyang Li \nU-M Physics\n\nExcitons and Light-Matter Interaction in Two-Dimensions\n\nTwo-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) semiconductors possess unique properties: atomically thin thickness\, well-defined exciton state\, and strong transition oscillator strength\, providing an interesting platform for many-body interactions and optical and electronic applications. In this talk\, I will discuss exciton and exciton-polariton properties in two different 2D vdW semiconductors. In the first part\, I will report strongly coupled exciton-polaritons of an anisotropic 2D magnet\, CrSBr\, integrated with an anisotropic photonic crystal (PhC) cavity. In this system\, the spin\, atomic lattice\, and photonic lattices anisotropies are strongly correlated\, giving rise to exceptionally strong coupling between engineered anisotropic optical modes and anisotropic excitons in CrSBr and a highly tunable polariton polarization by tens of degrees by many means. In the second part\, I will discuss how the twist between two CrSBr monolayers leads to tunable exciton states and anisotropies. Cavity- and twist-tuning on 2D materials provide new opportunities for both fundamental understanding of quantum materials and photonic technology.\n\n\nDechen Zhang\nU-M Physics\n\nField Tunable BKT and Quantum Phase Transitions in Spin-1/2 Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet\n\nQuantum magnetism is one of the most active fields for exploring exotic phases and phase transitions. The recently synthesized Na2BaCo(PO4)2 (NBCP) is an ideal material incarnation of the spin-1/2 easy axis triangular lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF). Experimental evidence shows that NBCP hosts the spin supersolid state with a giant magnetocaloric effect. It was also proposed that the applied magnetic field B can drive the system through Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) and other richer quantum phase transitions. However\, detecting these transitions is a huge challenge because they onset at extremely low-temperature T at around 60 mK\, and the measurement of the magnetic susceptibility of these transitions requires high sensitivity. With the help of our newly developed gradient force magnetometer in a dilution refrigerator\, we constructed the contour diagram of the magnetic susceptibility in the B-T phase diagram in temperatures as cold as 30 mK. These results provide a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of the several field-tunable quantum phase transitions and BKT melting of the spin supersolidity\, which are especially significant when their giant magnetocaloric effects highlight potential applications for sub-Kelvin refrigeration under concerns about global helium shortages.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Colloquium Seminar: Analysis and Design of High Dimensional Sampling for Scientific Computing
DESCRIPTION:Sampling from probability distributions is a fundamental challenge in physics and data science. State-of-the-art methods often rely on building efficient dynamics for probability measures. This talk examines the analysis and design of such dynamics\, drawing insights from and targeting applications in high-dimensional scientific computing. \n\nIn the first part\, we uncover and analyze a novel 'delocalization of bias' phenomenon in MCMC with Langevin dynamics. While sampling bias increases with dimensionality in full coordinates\, individual coordinates can exhibit nearly dimension-independent behavior. This finding suggests that the curse of dimensionality in sampling may be mitigated at the level of low-dimensional marginals. In the second part\, we propose a generative diffusion dynamics design for probabilistic forecasting\, focusing on benchmark applications in stochastically forced Navier-Stokes equations. We prove that a specific design of diffusion coefficients minimizes novel statistical errors at the level of path measures and yields Föllmer processes\, which also offer a Bayesian interpretation of the optimal design. We conclude with a real-data scientific application in black hole imaging\, where we combine generative diffusion dynamics with MCMC for rigorous posterior sampling. Overall\, the talk demonstrates how mathematical understanding and methodological design of high-dimensional sampling dynamics can synergize with insights and applications in scientific computing.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Suqi Liu\, Postdoctoral Research Fellow\, Biomedical Informatics\, Harvard University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Data is playing an increasingly crucial role in modern health sciences. With the transition to electronic health systems\, growing collaborations among institutions\, and the rapid advancement of genome sequencing technologies\, health data has become more accessible than ever before. However\, the large-scale nature of health data presents unique challenges for statistics and data science in distilling\, integrating\, and generalizing knowledge\, due to its high dimensionality\, diverse modalities\, complex structures\, and more.\n\nIn this talk\, I will highlight several efforts I have undertaken in recent years to address these challenges using statistical\, probabilistic\, and AI-driven tools\, ranging from practical applications to the theoretical foundations of data science. First\, I will focus on the theoretically guaranteed learning of a comprehensive medical knowledge graph that integrates heterogeneous relationships from various sources by employing embedding-based neural networks combined with representation learning. Next\, I will discuss a method for harmonizing data across multiple institutions using graph neural networks (GNNs)\, along with a theoretical analysis of GNN performance in graph alignment tasks through random geometric graphs. Finally\, I will present a framework for unifying the representation of biomedical concepts and genetic markers by leveraging large language models (LLMs). Through these efforts\, I have developed an extensive toolbox for knowledge integration to better understand health-related outcomes and advance the use of biomedical data in clinical practice.\n\nhttps://www.suqil.com/

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:We’re Biased\, So Now What? Personalizing and Mitigating Unconscious Bias
DESCRIPTION:Many of us are committed to diversity\, equity\, and inclusion (DEI) and accept the extensive evidence from scholarly studies in psychology and neuroscience demonstrating that we all have unconscious biases that affect our interactions with others. The question then becomes\, how do we not only become aware of our biases\, but also work to overcome them?\nLearning Objectives:\n\nGain knowledge of societal biases and self-awareness of one’s unconscious biases\nDevelop strategies to advocate for inclusion in light of unconscious bias\n\nThis workshop fulfills the unconscious bias requirement for Rackham’s DEI certificate program.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/xqRen.\nThis workshop is designed for University of Michigan master’s students\, doctoral students\, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff\, please contact rackhampdeworkshops@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Performance:G. Love & Special Sauce
DESCRIPTION:New Music!\n\n\n\"I've been in the game a long time\, but I've always considered myself a student\,\" says G. Love. \"Finishing this album with Keb Mo' felt like graduation.\"\n\n\nRecorded in Nashville with a slew of special guests including Robert Randolph\, Marcus King\, and Roosevelt Collier\, 'The Juice' is indeed diploma-worthy. Co-produced and co-written with GRAMMY-winning icon Keb Mo\,' it's an electrifying collection\, one that tips its cap to more than a century of blues greats even as it offers its own distinctly modern pop spin on the genre\, mixing programmed beats and hip-hop grooves with blistering guitar and sacred steel. G. Love's lyrics are both personal and political here\, artfully balancing his appreciation for the simple joys in life with his obligation to speak out for justice and equality\, and his performances are suitably riotous and rousing to match\, with infectious call-and-response hooks and funky sing-along choruses at every turn. Easy as it is to succumb to cynicism these days\, the songs on 'The Juice' refuse\, insisting instead on hope and determination in the face of doubt and despair.\n\n\n\"I've always tried to make music that's a force for positivity\,\" G. Love explains. \"It was important to me that this album be something that could empower the folks who are out there fighting the good fight every day. I wanted to make a rallying cry for empathy and unity.\"\n\n\nBorn Garrett Dutton in Philadelphia\, PA\, G. Love grew up equally enthralled with folk\, blues\, and rap\, devouring everything from Lead Belly and Run D.M.C. to John Hammond and the Beastie Boys. After migrating to Boston\, he and his band\, Special Sauce\, broke out in 1994 with their Gold-selling self-titled debut\, which earned widespread critical acclaim for its bold vision and adventurous production. Over the next twenty-five years\, G. Love would go on to release seven more similarly lauded studio studios albums with Special Sauce (plus four solo albums on his own)\, solidifying his place in music history as a genre-bending pioneer with a sound The New York Times described as \"a new and urgent hybrid\" and NPR called a \"musical melting pot.\" G. Love's magnetic stage presence\, meanwhile\, made him a fixture on festival lineups from Bonnaroo to Lollapalooza\, and his relentless appetite for tour and collaboration landed him on the road and in the studio with artists as diverse as Lucinda Williams\, Dave Matthews\, The Avett Brothers\, Jack Johnson\, and DJ Logic.\n\n\nG. Love is excited to offer the Pre-Show VIP option. G. Love’s Pre-Show Pop Off is an ALL REQUEST storytellers solo acoustic performance by G. Love and a one of a kind merch package. The pre-show pop off also includes early entry\, a Q&A and photo opportunity with G. Love\, and early access to the merch booth. Your VIP Pre-Show Pop off ticket includes a general admission ticket into the show.\n \nVIP Ticket Includes:\nAn ALL REQUEST storyteller acoustic performance by G. Love\nQ&A session with G. Love\nPhoto with G. Love\nVIP Laminate\nExclusive VIP Poster\nEarly access to the merch booth
