SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Chimera
DESCRIPTION:*Chimera* is an immersive exhibition centered on a newly commissioned film\, also titled *Chimera*\, which fuses elements from Newsome's prior works *Hands Performance* and *Build or Destroy* with a new interquel film that bridges their narratives. This connecting piece explores the origins and journey of the bejeweled figure in flames from *Build or Destroy*\, revealing where they come from and the purpose that led them to Earth. This exhibition reflects a bold shift in Newsome's practice toward sci-fi filmmaking\, layering the architecture of film\, movement\, and world-building to probe themes of identity\, resistance\, and creation. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Red Summer: Racial Violence in the American Landscape\, 1917-1923
DESCRIPTION:The Red Summer portfolio represents the stories of various locations in the American landscape where racial violence (often characterized as “Race Wars” at the time) erupted between 1917 and 1923. These years of conflict reveal several aspects of racial anxiety that inform our contemporary experience\, including\, though not limited to\; racism\, fear of violent black revolt\, lynching\, poverty\, mass incarceration\, and competition for employment. The term “Red Summer” was first used by James Weldon Johnson to describe the violent attacks against black communities during 1919. \n\nThough the events of the early twentieth century seem to be remote and fading apparitions of an American past\; my work is concerned with the power and influence of our shared historical narrative upon the present. The upheaval of Red Summer occurred approximately fifty years after the American Civil War\, fifty years before the height of the Civil Rights Era\, and three centuries after the first enslaved Africans arrived in English colonies that would become the United States. \n\nThe project combines photographs of the contemporary landscape made at or near the site of racial conflict with fragmented selections of contemporaneous newspaper reporting (1917-1923). In many cases\, the newsprint images include the surrounding stories or advertisements. The combination of the landscape photograph and the reproduction of newspaper fragments (which invade the contemporary with a narrative from the past)\, is a rupture and a conversation on the timeline between past and present.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Bibliophile and the Library: Private-Press Books from the Collection of Bill Heidrich
DESCRIPTION:View beautifully illustrated books that stand as remarkable testaments to the work of twentieth-century small private presses\, which\, in contrast to the trend of mass commercialization\, produced limited editions that celebrated the uniqueness of manual craftsmanship. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Quantum Research Institute | The invisible drummer: A quantum optomechanical dark matter search
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nRecently the field of cavity optomechanics has entered the search for dark matter\, leveraging technology capable of force measurements at or below the standard quantum limit. I’ll describe one such journey\, in our lab\, in which a membrane-based optomechanical system is being used to search for inertial forces produced by ultralight “dark photon” dark matter. Along the way\, we have developed techniques to enhance sensitivity using tools of contemporary cavity optomechanics\, including elastic strain-engineering to reduce mechanical loss\, radiation pressure feedback to reduce thermal noise\, and photonic crystal patterning to increase displacement sensitivity. We have also joined forces with the squeezed light metrology community\, to develop a prototype entanglement-enhanced optomechanical sensor array. Against this backdrop\, I’ll present our initial dark photon search results.\n\nBio: \nDalziel Wilson is an associate professor of optical sciences at the University of Arizona. His work in cavity optomechanics includes seminal demonstrations of radiation pressure feedback cooling\, quantum-limited position measurement\, optomechanical light squeezing\, and quantum coherent nanomechanics. Previously\, he was a visiting scientist at IBM Research–Zurich and a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at EPFL. He received his Ph.D. from Caltech in 2012 and his B.S. from UC Berkeley in 2006.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series | In Close Association: Politics\, Gender\, and Reform in Meiji Japan\, 1868-1900
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This lecture will be in-person only and will not be recorded.\n \n This talk examines the activities of two former samurai who committed themselves to social and political reform in the decades following the 1868 Meiji Restoration: Nakagawa Yokotarō (1836-1903) and Sumiya Koume (1850-1920). In this talk\, Professor Anderson suggests that this period of rapid transformation offered each of them a new start and the chance to create a new identity. Together\, their stories shed light on how gender roles changed in these years and demonstrate how modern Japanese society was increasingly organized around the principle of gender difference.\n \n Marnie S. Anderson is the Barbara Richmond 1940 Professor of History at Smith College in Northampton\, Massachusetts\, where she teaches premodern and modern Japanese history and modern East Asian history. She received her PhD from the University of Michigan in 2005. Her current research investigates the rise of large-scale conservative women’s activism in prewar and wartime Japan with a focus on the Patriotic Women’s Association *(Aikoku fujinkai)*.\n \n *This lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.*\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at cjsevents@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Exhibition:More than Gray: Reimagining Early America in Full Color
DESCRIPTION:The American past was lived in full color\, but this vibrant history can be easily missed in surviving evidence. You can’t deny that there’s something about a black-and-white photograph that feels… stuffy. With portraits showing people with their shirts buttoned right to the neck and everything in shades of gray and brown\, our imaginations can incline to thinking of the past as a bit staid\, if not downright dull. But look a little closer\, and you’ll see signs that the fashion choices available to those who came before us were more colorful than you might first think. From the fabrics they wore\, to the games they played\, or the books they read\, their world was alive with bright hues. This exhibit invites you to reimagine history with a fuller color palette and picture the vibrancy and joy that just might be hidden behind the unsmiling photographs.\n\nExhibition opening weekdays from 12-4.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nHow can we enable immune cells to “hear” sound waves\, and how can we “see” their activities in real time? Dr. Longwei Liu’s research merges ultrasound-controllable genetic circuit engineering\, cellular reprogramming\, and multiplexed molecular imaging techniques to empower cells to detect and respond to ultrasound. Specifically\, his research focuses on developing a clinically compatible\, noninvasive\, effective\, focused ultrasound (FUS)-controllable Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR)-T cell-based immunotherapy for solid tumor treatment. Alongside this\, he also develops genetically encoded fluorescent biosensors and multiplexed signaling activity imaging platform to capture the early activation molecular signaling landscapes in live immune cells to guide the design of genetic circuits. These biosensors can be further extended to study cell signaling in real time\, providing insights into cellular mechanics\, cell-cell and cell-material interactions. In this seminar\, Dr. Liu will share recent progress on three topics: (1) engineering effective and clinically compatible ultrasound-controllable CAR-T cell immunotherapies for treating solid tumors\, including glioblastoma (GBM) and prostate cancer\; (2) developing a remote-controllable CRISPR toolbox to allow spatiotemporal control of genomic/epigenomic reprogramming\, potentially for gene therapies\; and (3) engineering “cell activity” biosensors and multiplexed signaling activity imaging platform to study T cell activation mechanisms and guide the design of genetic circuits. This combination of cell signaling observation and manipulation deepens our understanding of cellular networks\, bridges the gap between observational biology and actionable therapeutics\, and paves the way for innovative cell manipulation methodologies for therapy.\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/94337625486

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Colloquium Seminar: Asymptotics of high-dimensional Laplace-type integrals and probability densities
DESCRIPTION:We derive an asymptotic expansion of Laplace-type integrals in which dimension grows together with the large parameter in the exponent. This fills a gap in the theory between the classical fixed dimensional regime dating back to Laplace\, and more recent work on the asymptotic expansion of infinite dimensional Laplace-type integrals due to Ben Arous. We also present related work on approximations of high-dimensional Laplace-type probability densities. These results resolve several long-standing open questions in the theory of both general asymptotic analysis and high-dimensional Bayesian statistics. Beyond their theoretical significance\, our results are useful for statistical computation such as model selection and uncertainty quantification in Bayesian inverse problems and other data science settings.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - The dual role of parental conflict in speciation
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our ongoing Thursday Seminar Series.\n\nDetermining what factors generate biodiversity is a central question in evolutionary biology. Despite its long history of study\, we are only beginning to understand the evolutionary drivers of reproductive barriers between species\, including reproductive barriers that manifest as sterile or dead hybrids. An intriguing hypothesis is that intragenomic conflicts- or selfish evolution- can drive the evolution of alleles that cause hybrid sterility/inviability. One such source of conflict is conflict between parents over resource allocation to offspring. Under parental conflict\, multiple paternity drives the evolution of paternally derived\, resource-acquiring alleles\, and maternally derived alleles that distribute resources equally among offspring. In hybrids\, mismatches between these parent-of-origin effect alleles can cause inappropriate development of placenta or endosperm\, and subsequently embryo death. Here\, I test the role of parental conflict in generating one of the most common intrinsic barriers in seed angiosperms- hybrid seed inviability-using members of the evolutionary and ecological model system\; the Mimulus guttatus species complex. I show that hybrid seed inviability has evolved rapidly and repeatedly in this group\, and patterns of HSI conform to the predictions of parental conflict. Additionally\, genetic mapping suggests that hybrid seed inviability is conferred by nuclear\, parent-of-origin effect loci (i.e. loci that affect the probability of death only if maternally or paternally derived). Lastly\, using a series of natural surveys and mixed pollination crosses\, I find that species with different histories of parental conflict frequently co-occur and hybridize\, and hybridization between species with differing histories of parental conflict can indirectly influence growth in intraspecific seeds. Overall\, this work highlights a dual role of parental conflict in the speciation process\; both in the origin of reproductive isolation\, but also in the dynamics and outcomes of hybridization in nature.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: Between Home and Exile: Binational Living and Longing at the US-Mexico Border
DESCRIPTION:Mexican immigrants and migrants have been crossing back and forth along the US Mexico border for 150 years\, and yet exile is most often associated with the political migrations that took place during the Mexican Revolution. This lecture will address the tensions between forced and voluntary exile of Mexican migrants over the years\, as well as how we might grapple with notions of exile as they relate to economic and violent displacement. It will also discuss the many meanings of home\, especially for migrants forging binational lives and livelihoods. Centrally\, it will focus on the affective impacts of exile—the longing and the missing of homes and families on the other side of the border.\n\nLarisa Veloz is a professor of history at the University of Texas at El Paso\, where she teaches the histories of Mexican migration\, Latin America and the Latinx diaspora\, and the US-Mexico borderlands. Her book \"‘Even the Women are Leaving’: Migrants Making Mexican America\, 1890-1965\,\" published in 2023 by University of California Press\, explores the histories of Mexican migrant families\, focusing on women and gender relations in the first part of the twentieth century. Her current project is based on a set of oral histories/testimonios of Mexican migrant women who came to the United States in the 60s\, 70s\, and 80s.\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:What Can Participatory Music Practice Do for Liberal Democracy? A Rebetiko Case Study
DESCRIPTION:What is the democratizing potential of participatory music practices? Professor Stamatis draws on her extensive ethnographic research in the Rebetiki Istoria music club in Athens and is in dialogue with the writings of political theorist Chantal Mouffe that harness critical artistic practices in the public sphere to the realization of agonistic democracy. Using the participatory music practices of Rebetiki Istoria\, she develops Mouffe’s work to better understand under which conditions counterhegemonic music practices engender agonism. She suggests that its music practices offer a framework for overcoming fundamental shortcomings of agonistic theory and demonstrate the possibility for agonistic peace as a dynamic equilibrium between the constitutive political tensions of liberal democracy.\n\nYona Stamatis is Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology at the University of Illinois Springfield\, Director of the Music Program\, and Chair of the Department of Art\, Music and Theatre. Her research interests center on music and social justice with a focus on Greek folk and popular song. She has published many articles and has a book in progress. Her research has been supported by the Fulbright Foundation\, Mellon Foundation\, and Constantine A Tsangadas Fellowship for Hellenic Studies. She is the music editor for Ergon: Greek/American & Diaspora Arts and Letters. Her doctorate in musicology is from the University of Michigan in 2011. She is a violinist and a bouzouki player in the early rebetiko style.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ESG Data Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Jerry Davis for a workshop on ESG Data. Nearly all major corporations release ESG reports\, and global ESG (environmental\, social\, governance) assets under management are projected to pass $50 trillion in 2025. Some see ESG data as an essential tool to guide corporations toward positive social impact. Yet the investment strategy has become controversial\, and some states have banned the use of ESG standards for government funds. What is ESG\, how can I get and use ESG data\, and why is a seemingly niche investment strategy suddenly so political?\n\nThis hands-on workshop provides hands-on experience with ESG data to answer three questions: (1) How can I evaluate a specific company’s ESG performance (e.g.\, a potential employer)? (2) How can I assess ESG mutual funds and ETFs that I might invest in? and (3) How can I use ESG data to create a portfolio that matches my values?\n\nRegister for this and other workshops in the series at https://forms.gle/oXCDCEsdQ5AHqcpK8

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:FAST Lecture | Dyeing to Know: Studying Colors in Karanis Textiles
DESCRIPTION:Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year is Mocha Mousse\, a color Pantone says\, “nurtures us with its suggestion of the delectable qualities of chocolate and coffee\, answering our desire for comfort.” While Kelsey Museum conservators are fairly sure that Mocha Mousse was not a favorite color in Roman Egypt—a culture that\, sadly\, also had no experience of either chocolate or coffee as delectable comfort foods—Pantone’s Classic Blue (2020) and Viva Magenta (2022) would have been strong contenders. \n\nIn this talk\, Kelsey Museum Conservator Suzanne Davis will present initial findings from a study of dyes in textiles from the Roman Egyptian town of Karanis\, Egypt. This study is a subset of a larger project to look at color in the Kelsey Museum’s collections. Among other things\, it has revealed that the textile workers of Karanis were highly sophisticated in their application and manipulation of color and that favorite colors for embellishing fabrics were a classic navy blue\, a bright and bold red\, and a wide range of pinks and purples—all skillfully modulated to achieve specific decorative effects. \n\nThis event will take place in Room 125 of the Kelsey Museum’s Newberry Hall. Light refreshments and food will be provided before the lecture\, which will begin at 6 PM.\n\nFAST (Field Archaeology Series on Thursday) lectures are free and open to the public. If you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event\, please visit our accessibility page at https://myumi.ch/zwPkd or contact the education office by calling (734) 647-4167. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Penny Stamps Speaker Series - Rashaad Newsome
DESCRIPTION:Rashaad Newsome is a multidisciplinary artist whose work blends several practices — collage\, sculpture\, video\, music\, computer programming\, and performance — to form an altogether new field. He seamlessly merges art\, code\, film\, and community-building to create immersive experiences that explore the intersections of Blackness\, queerness\, and futurism. Using the equalizing force of sampling\, he crafts compositions that surprise in their associative potential and walk the tightrope between identity politics\, social practice and abstraction. \nAssembly\, his groundbreaking exhibition and film\, brings together dancers\, artificial intelligence\, animation\, collage\, sculpture\, holography\, and soundscapes to reimagine collective liberation. Central to this work is Being\, the Digital Griot—an AI-powered entity that embodies radical storytelling. Acting as both mirror and provocateur\, Being demonstrates AI's potential as a tool for liberation rather than control. \nNewsome will offer an in-depth exploration of the conceptual frameworks and processes behind Assembly and Being. He will discuss how his work dismantles systems of oppression and reimagines physical and digital spaces as arenas for liberation. Through dynamic storytelling\, dance\, and the collaboration between human and non-human performers\, Newsome pushes artistic boundaries while sparking critical conversations about how art and technology can shape futures beyond binary thinking\, paving the way for a more liberated world.\nNewsome has exhibited and performed in galleries\, museums\, institutions\, and festivals throughout the world\, including The Whitney Museum\, Brooklyn Museum\, MoMA PS1\, SFMOMA\, New Orleans Museum of Art\, Centre Georges Pompidou\, and the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture. He has received multiple honors and awards for his work\, including a 2014 Headlands Center for the Arts Visiting Artist Residency\, and a 2011 Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award.\nIn tandem with Newsome’s appearance in the Penny Stamps Series\, the Institute for the Humanities is hosting Chimera\, an immersive exhibition built around a newly commissioned film of the same name. This exhibition reflects a bold shift in Newsome's practice toward sci-fi filmmaking\, layering the architecture of film\, movement\, and world-building to probe themes of identity\, resistance\, and creation. Chimera opens directly following this event at the Institute for the Humanities gallery with an opening reception and artist meet and greet. Chimera will be on view from January 16 through February 28\, 2025 at the Institute for the Humanities Gallery. \nPresented in partnership with the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities. This project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan.\nSeries presenting partners: Detroit PBS\, ALL ARTS\, and PBS Books. Media partner: Michigan Public.

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:Opening Reception: The Stampede
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Stamps Gallery on Thursday\, January 16\, 2025 from 6-8:30 p.m. for the opening reception of The Stampede.Born from their passion for the arts\, The Stampede is a student-led organization building a new space for artists. In September 2023\, four undergraduates united with a simple mission: to create a space for showcasing exciting new art work. They established a foundation and worked to build a buzz through outreach and excitement. The Stampede first hosted a pop-up exhibition (party) at a friend's house\, exhibiting 53 pieces of original work\, with food\, drink\, and music\, and a smashing turnout from the local community. They have since evolved\, developed an infrastructure\, and grown into a platform for dynamic art work.\nToday\, The Stampede curates and facilitates exhibitions and events that bring together artists\, writers\, and musicians. From pop-ups and art markets to concerts and gallery shows\, they provide a vibrant platform for creativity for the community. The organization has broken new ground on multiple accounts to pave new ways for artists today and tomorrow\; bridging the divide between student and school. Functioning as an artist collective\, The Stampede focus on creating large-scale artworks\, promotional materials\, and merchandise for their events.\nThis exhibition offers a glimpse behind the scenes of The Stampede: its origins\, current endeavors\, and future aspirations. Since its inception\, The Stampede has continuously surprised with its growth and transformation. Committed to providing opportunities for artists\, they will keep hosting events for their community and friends.\nJoin The Stampede in their journey\; they invite you to... RUN WITH US!

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:\"Chimera\" Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the Institute for the Humanities Gallery for the opening of Rashaad Newsome's immersive exhibition *Chimera *immediately following his Penny Stamps Lecture at the Michigan Theater. \n\n*Chimera* is centered on a newly commissioned film\, also titled *Chimera*\, which fuses elements from Newsome's prior works *Hands Performance* and *Build or Destroy *with a new interquel film that bridges their narratives. SUMMARY:Performance:Django Reinhardt Birthday Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Join Michigan's own Djangophonique and Third Coast Swing in celebration of Django Reinhardt’s legacy of music that is still alive and evolving 115 years after he was born.\n\nDjangophonique is an award winning band led by guitar player Andrew Brown. With over a decade of national touring experience\, Brown is no stranger to the stage and delivers every performance with personality and enigmatic charm. A true disciple of the style\, Brown has spent countless hours immersing himself in the language of Django Reinhardt’s jazz manouche\, and he’s joined on stage by bandmates that match his skill and passion for the material. The core group includes Tyler Rindo on clarinet\, Nick Martin on rhythm guitar\, and Jorian Olk-Szost on upright bass. In 2023\, Djangophonique began collaborating with vocalist Katie Smith\, whose playful charm and soulful delivery channel the mystery and appeal of an unplaceable era of aching and entrancing nostalgia.\n\nThird Coast Swing has been playing the music of The late Belgium born Romani Gypsy\, Django Reinhardt & his band\, The Hot Club Of Paris 1930’-1940’s. Think Louis Armstrong with a French accent. Third Coast Swing has changed it up a bit and is currently touring with the Detroit native Dave Bennett\, Violinist Grant Flick \, Vocalist Ella Jury Jarvis & Pianist Andrew Henley. Ella and our guitarist Kaedin Plummer did a deep dive on early jazz classics by Fitzgerald\, Sarah Vaughan and Billy Holiday and then arranged these songs to fit Third Coast Swing's eclectic style.\n\nSponsored by Blue LLama
