DESCRIPTION:The application window for the 2025 Leadership Crisis Challenge (LCC) opens on Wednesday\, January 8!\n\nLCC is a premier action-based learning experience that immerses participants in a simulated business and media crisis\, powered by the Sanger Leadership Center at Michigan Ross. Students play the part of executives responding to the issues as they unfold\, while leveraging the expertise of communication coaches\, faculty\, and a board of directors made up of esteemed U-M alumni\, to prepare for a press conference attended by real members of the media.\n\nThis year's LCC will be held on January 30-31 and is open to ALL U-M students. There are two levels of competition—graduate and undergraduate. Two undergraduate teams and two graduate teams will receive a scholarship\, split among participants. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Red Summer: Racial Violence in the American Landscape\, 1917-1923
DESCRIPTION:The Red Summer portfolio represents the stories of various locations in the American landscape where racial violence (often characterized as “Race Wars” at the time) erupted between 1917 and 1923. These years of conflict reveal several aspects of racial anxiety that inform our contemporary experience\, including\, though not limited to\; racism\, fear of violent black revolt\, lynching\, poverty\, mass incarceration\, and competition for employment. The term “Red Summer” was first used by James Weldon Johnson to describe the violent attacks against black communities during 1919.  \n\nThough the events of the early twentieth century seem to be remote and fading apparitions of an American past\; my work is concerned with the power and influence of our shared historical narrative upon the present. The upheaval of Red Summer occurred approximately fifty years after the American Civil War\, fifty years before the height of the Civil Rights Era\, and three centuries after the first enslaved Africans arrived in English colonies that would become the United States. \n\nThe project combines photographs of the contemporary landscape made at or near the site of racial conflict with fragmented selections of contemporaneous newspaper reporting (1917-1923). In many cases\, the newsprint images include the surrounding stories or advertisements. The combination of the landscape photograph and the reproduction of newspaper fragments (which invade the contemporary with a narrative from the past)\, is a rupture and a conversation on the timeline between past and present.

DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Confronting the History and Ongoing Legacy of Housing Discrimination
DESCRIPTION:Housing discrimination has long contributed to racial inequalities in housing and other areas of life. In observance of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. Day\, the Institute for Social Research (ISR) is hosting members of the Justice InDeed (https://www.justiceindeedmi.org/) project team for an event that explores and responds to housing discrimination at the national and local level. The day will begin with a keynote speech to provide background and context before transitioning to a panel representing Justice InDeed and ISR\, discussing housing discrimination and its impacts on health\, wealth\, and other aspects of life. Justice InDeed project members will describe their efforts to respond to the legacy of racially restrictive covenants in Washtenaw County\, and train attendees to transcribe deeds for documentation and amendment. DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... DESCRIPTION:LSA faculty member Jessi Grieser performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Formal machine-checked program verification uses mechanized logical tools to connect low-level programs to specifications of the algorithms they are supposed to implement.  The same program verification tools can work in many application domains.  But it's not enough just to implement an algorithm\; the program is fully \"correct\" only if the algorithm (provably) computes an answer to the problem or question of interest.  Proofs of algorithm correctness rely on the mathematics of the application domains\, and each domain has its own mathematics.\nIn recent years we have applied this method to numerical methods (algorithms for scientific computing) and numerical analysis (reasoning about the accuracy of those methods)\, with machine-checked proofs formally connected to low-level program-correctness proofs.  I will discuss results in the numerical integration of differential equations and in solving linear systems.  Some of these results are joint work with Ariel Kellison and David Bindel (Cornell)\, Mohit Tekriwal and Jean-Baptiste Jeannin (Michigan). \n\nBio: Andrew Appel is Eugene Higgins Professor Computer Science\, and served from 2009-2015 as Chair of Princeton's CS department.  His research is in software verification\, computer security\, programming languages and compilers\, and technology policy. He received his A.B. summa cum laude in physics from Princeton in 1981\, and his Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University in 1985. Professor Appel has been editor in chief of ACM Transactions on Programming Languages and Systems and is a fellow of the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery). He has worked on fast N-body algorithms (1980s)\, Standard ML of New Jersey (1990s)\, Foundational Proof-Carrying Code (2000s)\, and the Verified Software Toolchain (2010-present).

DESCRIPTION:Given an ideal J in a polynomial ring R = K[x_1\, ...\, x_n]\, the initial ideal of J -- the ideal generated by the leading monomial terms in a Gröbner basis for J -- is a useful combinatorial invariant. If you perform a generic change of coordinates on R before computing the initial ideal of J\, the resulting initial ideal turns out to be especially well-behaved. We call this ideal the generic initial ideal of J. The generic change of variables eliminates the dependence on the original coordinates and yields an initial ideal of minimal complexity.\n\nWe'll start by reviewing the basics of monomial orders and Gröbner bases. Next\, we'll develop the theory of the generic initial ideal\, proving its existence and summarizing basic properties. Lastly\, we'll showcase applications of the generic initial ideal in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry.

DESCRIPTION:Shuaifeng Li \nU-M Physics\n\nTraining All-Mechanical Neural Networks for Task Learning Through in Situ Backpropagation\n\nRecent advances unveiled physical neural networks as promising machine learning platforms\, offering faster and more energy-efficient information processing. Compared with extensively-studied optical neural networks\, the development of mechanical neural networks remains nascent and faces significant challenges\, including heavy computational demands and learning with approximate gradients. Here\, we introduce the mechanical analogue of in situ backpropagation to enable highly efficient training of mechanical neural networks. We theoretically prove that the exact gradient can be obtained locally\, enabling learning through the immediate vicinity\, and we experimentally demonstrate this backpropagation to obtain gradient with high precision. With the gradient information\, we showcase the successful training of networks in simulations for behavior learning and machine learning tasks\, achieving high accuracy in experiments of regression and classification. Our findings\, which integrate the theory for training mechanical neural networks and experimental and numerical validations\, pave the way for mechanical machine learning hardware and autonomous self-learning material systems.\n\nShriya Sinha/Zecheng You \nU-M Physics\n\nEmerging Conduction Pathways in Semiconducting Bismuth-Antimony Alloys\n\nBi_{1-x}Sb_x alloys with ~0.07 < x < 0.22 have long been reported as narrow bandgap semiconductors with inverted bands. In addition to hosting topologically protected surface states\, the material has certain topological indices allowing it to host conduction pathways via extended defects such as dislocations. At temperatures above 150 K\, transport is dominated by thermally activated electrons and holes. The carrier density and their mobilities are determined by performing a two-channel analysis of the longitudinal and transverse magneto-conductivity. A 40 meV band gap is extracted by analyzing the temperature dependence of the carrier densities. ARPES measurements were conducted to explore the bulk bandgap focused on the L-point. We extract electron mobility from a sharp peak of magneto-conductance. From room temperature to cryogenic temperatures\, electron mobility increases by more than two orders of magnitude and approaches a remarkably high value of 750\,000 cm^2/Vs below 10 K. Because of the high mobility of electrons\, we were able to suppress the contribution of the bulk electron by 5-6 orders of magnitude by applying a large magnetic field and discover this presence of a new magnetic-field-independent conducting path of unknown origin.

DESCRIPTION:Chow rings of toric varieties feature a rich combinatorial structure of independent interest. We will begin by surveying four different ways of computing in these rings\, due to Billera\, Brion\, Fulton–Sturmfels\, and Allermann–Rau. We will illustrate the beauty and power of these methods by sketching four proofs of Huh and Huh–Katz’s formula μ_k(M) = deg_M(α*{r−k}β^k) for the coefficients of the reduced characteristic polynomial of a matroid M as the mixed intersection numbers of the hyperplane and reciprocal hyperplane classes α and β in the Chow ring of M. Each of these proofs sheds light on a different aspect of matroid combinatorics\, and provides a framework for more recent developments in the intersection theory of matroids.

Weibel – Professor of Mechanical Engineering\, Purdue University\n\nME Seminar Link\n\nPasscode: 845686\n\nAbstract:\nTwo-phase immersion cooling is promising for passive\, power-dense thermal management of electronics to address the challenges associated with rapid increases in thermal design power for AI computing applications. However\, the required dielectric coolants have boiling performance and heat flux dissipation limitations that require use of boiling surface enhancements to meet these goals. Our recent research efforts in the Cooling Technologies Research Center (CTRC) at Purdue University have explored various routes for boiling enhancement\, from microstructured surfaces that aim to enhance liquid delivery to the surface\, to physicochemical modifications that tune the fluidsurface interactions to aid in bubble nucleation and departure. Nevertheless\, the longstanding approach of using heat sinks with extended fins has the potential to most substantially increase the heat dissipation during two-phase immersion cooling\, especially if deployed in conjunction with the aforementioned surface enhancements. However\, predicting pool boiling from a heat sink is challenging due to multiple boiling regimes that can occur at different locations along the fin height. One recent breakthrough in our research has been to demonstrate an approach predicting twophase immersion heat sink performance by applying superheat-dependent heat transfer coefficient within a fin analysis. Our approach also uniquely considers interaction between the vapor and fins\, such that the predictions are valid at characteristic dimensions both below and above the capillary length scale\, which has been shown key to achieving experimental validation. This modeling approach has been recently coupled with a topology optimization algorithm that optimizes the geometry of a two-phase immersion heat sink to minimize thermal resistance\, while implicitly considering critical heat flux limitations\, providing a first-of-its-kind design tool for two-phase immersion heat sinks.\n\nBio:\nJustin A. Weibel is a Professor of the School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University and Director of the Cooling Technologies Research Center (CTRC)\, a graduated NSF I/UCRC that addresses research and development needs of companies and organizations in the area of highperformance heat removal from compact spaces. He received his PhD in 2012 and BSME in 2007\, both from Purdue University. Dr. Weibel’s research group explores methodologies for prediction and control of heat transport to enhance the performance and efficiency of thermal management technologies and energy transfer processes. He has been a key contributor to the development of transformative cooling technologies supported by the DARPA TGP (2008-2012)\, DARPA ICECool (2013-2017)\, NAVSEA NEEC (2016-2018)\, ONR NEPTUNE (2015-2021)\, SRC CHIRP (2019-)\, ARPA-E ASCEND (2021-)\, ARPA-E COOLERCHIPS (2023-)\, and ONR MURI (2024-) programs\, in addition to numerous sponsored research projects that transition these technologies to industry. Dr. Weibel has supervised 39 PhD and 16 MS students\, current and former\, co-authored over 200 refereed journal and conference papers (h-index of 45). He has been recognized as an Outstanding Engineering Teacher and Outstanding Faculty Mentor in the College of Engineering at Purdue University. He received the 2020 ASME Electronic & Photonic Packaging Division (EPPD) Young Engineer Award\, 2021 ASME K-16 Outstanding Early Faculty Career in Thermal Management Award\, and in 2023 was elected a Fellow of the ASME. Dr. Weibel is on the IEEE ITherm Executive Committee (Conference General Chair in 2021) and is Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Components Packaging and Manufacturing Technology.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Conformal prediction is a popular technique for constructing prediction intervals with distribution-free coverage guarantees. The coverage is marginal\, holding on average over the entire population but not necessarily for any specific subgroup. In this talk\, I will introduce a new method\, posterior conformal prediction (PCP)\, which generates prediction intervals with both marginal and approximate conditional coverage for clusters (or subgroups) naturally discovered in the data. PCP achieves these guarantees by modelling the conditional conformity score distribution as a mixture of cluster distributions. Compared to other methods with approximate conditional coverage\, this approach produces tighter intervals\, particularly when the test data is drawn from clusters that are well represented in the validation data. PCP can also be applied to guarantee conditional coverage on user-specified subgroups\, in which case it achieves robust coverage on smaller subgroups within the specified subgroups. In classification\, the theory underlying PCP allows for adjusting the coverage level based on the classifier’s confidence\, achieving significantly smaller sets than standard conformal prediction sets. Winner of an Avery Fisher Career Grant and the Sphinx Medal of Excellence\, he has appeared as soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra\, the Seattle\, Pittsburgh\, Dallas\, Grant Park\, San Diego and Baltimore symphony orchestras and\, at age 15\, the Chicago Symphony.\n\nNow principal flute of the Seattle Symphony\, he previously served as principal flute of the Dallas Symphony\, San Diego Symphony\, Florida Orchestra\, and Santa Fe Opera Orchestra. He recently served as acting principal flute of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and earlier with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.\n\nA founding member of The Myriad Trio\, and former member of Chamber Music Society Two\, Demarre has participated in the Santa Fe\, Marlboro\, Seattle and Stellenbosch chamber music festivals\, to name a few. He is the co-founder of the Art of Élan and\, along with clarinetist Anthony McGill and pianist Michael McHale\, founded the McGill/McHale Trio in 2014. Their first CD\, *Portraits*\, released in August 2017\, has received rave reviews\, as has *Winged Creatures*\, his recording with Anthony McGill and the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra. \n\nA native of Chicago\, Demarre McGill began studying the flute at age 7 and attended the Merit School of Music. In the years that followed\, until he left Chicago\, he studied with Susan Levitin. Demarre received his Bachelor’s degree from the Curtis Institute of Music and a Master’s degree at the Juilliard School.
