SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Chimera
DESCRIPTION:*Chimera* is an immersive exhibition centered on a newly commissioned film\, also titled *Chimera*\, which fuses elements from Newsome's prior works *Hands Performance* and *Build or Destroy* with a new interquel film that bridges their narratives. This connecting piece explores the origins and journey of the bejeweled figure in flames from *Build or Destroy*\, revealing where they come from and the purpose that led them to Earth. This exhibition reflects a bold shift in Newsome's practice toward sci-fi filmmaking\, layering the architecture of film\, movement\, and world-building to probe themes of identity\, resistance\, and creation. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Red Summer: Racial Violence in the American Landscape\, 1917-1923
DESCRIPTION:The Red Summer portfolio represents the stories of various locations in the American landscape where racial violence (often characterized as “Race Wars” at the time) erupted between 1917 and 1923. These years of conflict reveal several aspects of racial anxiety that inform our contemporary experience\, including\, though not limited to\; racism\, fear of violent black revolt\, lynching\, poverty\, mass incarceration\, and competition for employment. The term “Red Summer” was first used by James Weldon Johnson to describe the violent attacks against black communities during 1919. \n\nThough the events of the early twentieth century seem to be remote and fading apparitions of an American past\; my work is concerned with the power and influence of our shared historical narrative upon the present. The upheaval of Red Summer occurred approximately fifty years after the American Civil War\, fifty years before the height of the Civil Rights Era\, and three centuries after the first enslaved Africans arrived in English colonies that would become the United States. \n\nThe project combines photographs of the contemporary landscape made at or near the site of racial conflict with fragmented selections of contemporaneous newspaper reporting (1917-1923). In many cases\, the newsprint images include the surrounding stories or advertisements. The combination of the landscape photograph and the reproduction of newspaper fragments (which invade the contemporary with a narrative from the past)\, is a rupture and a conversation on the timeline between past and present.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Redefining the Crown
DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Bibliophile and the Library: Private-Press Books from the Collection of Bill Heidrich
DESCRIPTION:View beautifully illustrated books that stand as remarkable testaments to the work of twentieth-century small private presses\, which\, in contrast to the trend of mass commercialization\, produced limited editions that celebrated the uniqueness of manual craftsmanship. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Impossible Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Impossible Conversations is an exhibition and film installation by artists and filmmakers\, Pratāp Rughani and David Chung. The film centers a seemingly impossible dialogue between Arno Michaelis\, a former Neo-Nazi gang founder and Pardeep Kaleka\, son of the Sikh Temple President\, Satwant Singh Kaleka\, one of seven people killed in the shooting attack at the Oak Creek Sikh Temple (Gurudwara) by a white supremacist in 2012. \n \nThe film installation explores what happens when – for over a decade – Pardeep and Arno committed to a path of restorative communication - to listen deeply and connect with what motivates each other in the genesis and aftermath of atrocity.\nHow does healing begin? From the toxic polarization\, division and extreme racist violence that resulted in one of the worst mass shootings at a religious site in American history\, Pardeep insists that complete healing must eventually be a collective process for all\, to liberate both sides.\nAt Stamps Gallery\, Impossible Conversations will be accompanied by a dialogue and research room as well as photomurals that expand on the themes of restorative justice\, gun violence\, and how to sustain difficult dialogues to combat extremism and toxic polarization. \nExhibition curated by Srimoyee Mitra. Impossible Conversations has been supported in part by the Arts Research: Incubation &amp\; Acceleration (ARIA) program of The University of Michigan Office of the Vice President Research and the Arts Initiative\, Institute of Firearm Prevention Pilot Grant\, the Stamps School of Art and Design\, and the University of the Arts London. \nExhibition Programs\nAn Opening Screening\, Talkback\, and Reception will take place on Friday\, January 17\, 2025 from 5:30 – 8 p.m.\, and a Symposium will take place on Saturday\, January 18\, 2025 from 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. \nAbout the Artists\nPratāp Rughani is a writer and non-fiction filmmaker. His work develops documentary practice to enable people of radically different perspectives come into relation\, sometimes in the aftermath of violence and atrocity for example in South Africa\, Aboriginal Australia\, Europe\, Rwanda and the USA. Configuring a pro-filmic space to enable shared “witnessing” and the path towards restorative justice is a driving force in “Impossible Conversations” evolving through his practice in over thirty documentary films and exhibitions for BBC TV\, Channel 4\, Modern Art Oxford\, galleries and activist groups. The ethics of giving sustained attention to the experiences of marginalized\, excluded or sometimes reviled “others” and bringing them in relationship to the broader culture is central to his research into ethics of storytelling and the development of “Restorative Narrative.”\nRughani writes widely on the ethics of creative practice\, serves on several editorial Boards\, has won awards for film\, teaching\, and research\, and is Professor of Documentary Practices at the University of the Arts\, London.\nDavid Chung is an acclaimed visual artist and filmmaker. His work focuses on how identities are shaped in immigrant communities and the challenges of refugees as they integrate into new homelands.\nChung has exhibited his drawings\, prints\, and video installations at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts\, the Asia Society\, the Walker Arts Center\, the Studio Museum in Harlem\, the Gwangju Biennale\, the Smithsonian Institution\, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Chung has received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and the National Board Film Board of Canada's Award for Best Documentary Film. He was the 2013 Kim Koo Visiting Professor at Harvard University. \nChung is a professor and the director of the MFA Graduate Program at the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Stampede
DESCRIPTION:Born from their passion for the arts\, The Stampede is a student-led organization building a new space for artists. In September 2023\, four undergraduates united with a simple mission: to create a space for showcasing exciting new art work. They established a foundation and worked to build a buzz through outreach and excitement. The Stampede first hosted a pop-up exhibition (party) at a friend's house\, exhibiting 53 pieces of original work\, with food\, drink\, and music\, and a smashing turnout from the local community. They have since evolved\, developed an infrastructure\, and grown into a platform for dynamic art work.\nToday\, The Stampede curates and facilitates exhibitions and events that bring together artists\, writers\, and musicians. From pop-ups and art markets to concerts and gallery shows\, they provide a vibrant platform for creativity for the community. The organization has broken new ground on multiple accounts to pave new ways for artists today and tomorrow\; bridging the divide between student and school. Functioning as an artist collective\, The Stampede focus on creating large-scale artworks\, promotional materials\, and merchandise for their events.\nThis exhibition offers a glimpse behind the scenes of The Stampede: its origins\, current endeavors\, and future aspirations. Since its inception\, The Stampede has continuously surprised with its growth and transformation. Committed to providing opportunities for artists\, they will keep hosting events for their community and friends.\nJoin The Stampede in their journey\; they invite you to... RUN WITH US!

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Health Equity Leadership Series - The Birth Detroit Story
DESCRIPTION:Hope\, strength\, and vision -- Amidst the undeniable tragedies surrounding maternal and infant death rates in Detroit\, another narrative exists. This narrative leans on hope\, harnesses community strengths\, and imagines a future in which Detroit is a leader in community-based maternal and infant care. Community leaders across Detroit are using this strengths-based lens to find innovative and equitable solutions to these urgent issues. One of the newest community-centered solutions is Birth Detroit. Birth Detroit embraces a community organizing approach to birth center development\, rooted in deep equity and meaningful partnerships. Join us as we learn more about Birth Detroit's story and how its impacting change in Detroit\, navigating challenges\, and staying grounded in its mission.\n\nThe Health Equity Leadership Series is a speaker series hosted by the University of Michigan School of Nursing that welcomes leaders in the fields of nursing and healthcare to share their expertise and engage members of the UM community in critical thinking\, learning\, and dialogue about topics in health equity. Our goal is to expose UM faculty\, staff\, students\, and alumni to some of the most pressing and relevant topics in health equity and nursing. Attendees will be challenged to learn\, unlearn\, and expand upon their own views while also networking with leaders who have a demonstrated commitment to advancing equity in healthcare.\n\nWe'll begin with Birth Detroit's presentation and end with Q&A.\n\nPlease register on Sessions: https://sessions.studentlife.umich.edu/track/event/session/81911

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag | Quasinormal Corrections to Near-Extremal Black Hole Thermodynamics
DESCRIPTION:Recent work on the quantum mechanics of near-extremal non-supersymmetric black holes has identified a characteristic T^{3/2} scaling of the low temperature black hole partition function. This result has only been derived using the path integral in the near-horizon region and relies on many assumptions. We discuss how to derive the T^{3/2} scaling for the near-extremal rotating BTZ black hole from a calculation in the full black hole background using the Denef-Hartnoll-Sachdev (DHS) formula\, which expresses the 1-loop determinant of a thermal geometry in terms of a product over the quasinormal mode spectrum. We also derive the spectral measure for fields of any spin in Euclidean BTZ and use it to provide a new proof of the DHS formula and a new\, direct derivation of the BTZ heat kernel. The computations suggest a path to proving the T^{3/2} scaling for the asymptotically flat 4d Kerr black hole.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:More than Gray: Reimagining Early America in Full Color
DESCRIPTION:The American past was lived in full color\, but this vibrant history can be easily missed in surviving evidence. You can’t deny that there’s something about a black-and-white photograph that feels… stuffy. With portraits showing people with their shirts buttoned right to the neck and everything in shades of gray and brown\, our imaginations can incline to thinking of the past as a bit staid\, if not downright dull. But look a little closer\, and you’ll see signs that the fashion choices available to those who came before us were more colorful than you might first think. From the fabrics they wore\, to the games they played\, or the books they read\, their world was alive with bright hues. This exhibit invites you to reimagine history with a fuller color palette and picture the vibrancy and joy that just might be hidden behind the unsmiling photographs.\n\nExhibition opening weekdays from 12-4.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Belonging Through Resistance and Change
DESCRIPTION:Belonging exists within ecological frameworks where individuals experience varying degrees of connection depending on their social and physical location. From the construction of classroom syllabi to the development of federal and global policies\, numerous factors influence an individual's sense of belonging in higher education. Belonging is inherently political\, contested\, and continuously evolving. The concept of belonging is often naturalized\, leading to the assumption that belonging is obvious or innate. When belonging is framed as natural\, it obscures the reality that belonging is always contested\, and neutrality in this context is neither fixed nor truly impartial.\n\nBeyond its precarious nature\, another critical issue arises when decision-makers in positions of power predominantly represent specific groups\, resulting in leadership that does not reflect the diversity of their organizations. This lack of representation perpetuates exclusion and limits the breadth of perspectives in decision-making processes.\n\nAdditionally\, based on social positioning\, individuals may feel disconnected from larger macro systems but find a sense of belonging within smaller communities that share identities and experiences. These communities often serve as vital spaces for survival and resistance. Ultimately\, individuals exercise agency in shaping their sense of belonging. While institutions bear a responsibility to cultivate an inclusive environment for students\, faculty\, and staff\, individuals also have control over how they engage with and create belonging.\n\nThis panel aims to deepen understanding by exploring how belonging is negotiated and sustained in complex social and ecological contexts. It will examine the challenges of fostering a sense of belonging and how individuals or groups create belonging through self-driven initiatives and resistance efforts.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Understanding and Controlling the Interactions of Plasmas with Flames and Flowing Gases
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nElectrical discharges in aerospace applications occur in complex\, nonuniform environments featuring reactive and flowing gases. Understanding and controlling these plasmas requires a multiphysics approach and consideration of the coupling between plasma and its environment. One example is use of pulsed nanosecond discharges in plasma-assisted combustion. To combat climate change\, reducing emissions of CO2 and NOₓ is critical. Pulsed nanosecond discharges have proven effective in stabilizing lean flames and mitigating combustion instabilities under lean conditions\, which help minimize thermal NOₓ formation. However\, the interplay between flame and plasma presents ongoing challenges. This presentation will explore experimental and theoretical investigations into these two-way coupled interactions for fundamental and industry-relevant flames. Another example involves discharges in non-reactive\, flowing gas environments\, such as lightning arcs attaching to aircraft in flight or wind turbine blades. During the damaging current flow phase\, an aircraft can travel ten times its length\, causing the arc to interact with the fluid boundary layer and reattach to new locations (the swept stroke phase). Understanding the interplay between flow physics and electrical breakdown is essential for developing lightning protection systems. We will review experiments and models to address these interactions.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nCarmen Guerra-Garcia is the Charles Stark Draper Assoc. Professor of Aero-nautics and Astronautics (A&A) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)\, where she leads the Aerospace Plasma Group at the intersection of aerospace engineering\, low temperature plasma technologies\, and gas discharge physics. She majored in Aeronautical Engr. at Polytechnic Univ. of Madrid (Spain) and obtained her SM and PhD in A&A from MIT. Prior to joining MIT\, Guerra-Garcia was with the Boeing Research and Technology Europe and a visiting researcher at Princeton Universi-ty. Guerra-Garcia has received NSF CAREER Award (2024)\, Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award (2021) Intl. Fulbright Science and Technology Award (2009)\, Junior Bose Award for Excellence in Teaching (2024) and Earll M. Murman Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising (2021). She is a member of the APS Gaseous Electronics Conference Exec. Committee and the AIAA Plasmady-namics and Lasers Technical Committee. Guerra-Garcia’s research spans from interaction of lightning with aircraft and wind turbines\, to plasma technologies for ignition\, combustion\, and chemical con-version.\n\nThe seminar will be conducted in person and simulcast via Zoom: https://mipse.umich.edu/seminars_2425.php#winter2025

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Gilbert S. Omenn Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics - Weekly Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nWe are interested in deciphering RNA-protein networks in cells\, which are the result of interactions between RNA sequence/structural features and dynamic populations of RNA-binding proteins. These networks drive essential biological functions and are implicated in various diseases. To illuminate features that mediate the function and dysfunction of RNA molecules\, we employ a suite of technologies known as mutational profiling (MaP) experiments. In MaP\, reactive chemical probes mark RNA molecules where a measured event takes place\, for example protein binding\, RNA folding\, or small molecule interaction. The locations of these marks on RNA can be encoded as “mutations” during reverse transcription and read out by massively parallel sequencing. The original native cellular context of the chemically probed RNA can be reconstructed from MaP sequencing computationally.\n\nUsing MaP technologies\, we have defined features of RNA responsible for a variety of biology\, including sequences and structures mediating RNA localization\, assembly into complexes\, and disease activity. We are further developing the technology for identification of RNA-binding protein interactions and small-molecule-interacting sites on RNAs transcriptome-wide.\n\nBy mapping the uncharted landscapes of RNA-protein networks\, our research provides a foundation for understanding new RNA biology and for advancing RNA-targeted therapeutic interventions.\n\nBio:\nChase grew up in the Midwest\, moving between suburbs of Milwaukee and Chicago. Chase’s parents work for a family business that sells materials storage and handling solutions for factories and warehouses around the Midwest (think forklifts and automated shelving). While Chase did have some odd jobs with the family business when he was younger\, given the opportunity to pursue his own interests and inspired by a number of science teachers\, Chase decided to pursue a degree in Biochemistry at the University of Rochester in New York. \n\nThere\, Chase discovered a now long-time interest in RNA biology: Chase’s first research experience explored mechanisms of codon bias during mRNA translation in a yeast model with Beth Grayhack. Chase then pursued a Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry at the University of Michigan\, where he studied the mechanism of mRNA regulation by RNA-binding proteins in a Drosophila cell model with Aaron Goldstrohm. Chase then performed postdoctoral training in the Department of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina with Kevin Weeks\, where Chase integrated chemical probing strategies and next-gen sequencing to study long noncoding RNAs in human biology and disease. After a short stint as a postdoc and staff scientist at Washington University in St. Louis pursuing proximity labeling proteomics technologies\, Chase ultimately returned to the University of Michigan Department of Biological Chemistry as a Faculty Scholar of the Center for RNA Biomedicine and an Affiliate Faculty Member of the Center for Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics. His lab is interested in how RNA-protein interaction networks govern biology and disease.\n\nThroughout his career\, Chase has had the support of NIH training grants during his Ph.D. and postdoctoral training\, an American Cancer Society Postdoctoral Fellowship\, an NCI K22 Career Transition Award\, and is currently supported by an NIGMS R01. Among honors Chase has received\, he is most proud of a recent student-nominated Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award given to him by the University of Michigan Cellular and Molecular Biology graduate program.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Probability and Analysis Seminar: Toward a structure theory of disordered matrix product states
DESCRIPTION:In 1992\, Fannes\, Nachtergaele\, and Werner classified translation invariant states on quantum spin chains and discovered that they admit a matrix product structure. Such matrix product states are simultaneously good approximations for general states\, and natural candidates for ground states of specific local Hamiltonians. Following the observation by Vidal (2004) that matrix product states are ‘‘efficient\,’’ the theory took root and is now an indispensable tool in many-body physics and quantum simulation. Recent work in this direction by Movassagh–Schenker (2022) and Nelson–R. (2024) adapted this structure to states generated by disordered matrix products. All such disordered matrix product states are translation co-variant. However both works above only had a ‘‘one-way’’ construction\, not a classification. In this talk\, I’ll report on some work in progress with Jeffrey Schenker where we successfully classify the translation co-variant states when the underlying probability space is a compact Hausdorff space.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Vector-valued robust stochastic control with applications to finance
DESCRIPTION:We study a dynamic stochastic control problem subject to Knightian uncertainty with multi-objective (vector-valued) criteria. Assuming the preferences across expected multi-loss vectors are represented by a given\, yet general\, preorder\, we address the model uncertainty by adopting a robust or minimax perspective\, minimizing expected loss across the worst-case model. In contrast to the scalar case\, major challenges for multi-loss control problems include properly defining and interpreting the notions of supremum and infimum\, and addressing the non-uniqueness of these suprema and infima. To deal with these\, we employ the notion of an ideal point vector-valued supremum for the robust part of the problem\, while we view the control part as a multi-objective (or vector) optimization problem. Using a set-valued framework\, we derive both a weak and strong version of the dynamic programming principle (DPP) or Bellman equations by taking the value function as the collection of all worst expected losses across all feasible actions. The weak version of Bellman's principle is proved under minimal assumptions. To establish a stronger version of DPP\, we introduce the rectangularity property with respect to a general preorder. We also further study a particular\, but important\, case of component-wise partial order of vectors\, for which we additionally derive DPP under a different set-valued notion for the value function\, the so-called upper image of the multi-objective problem. Finally\, we provide illustrative examples motivated by financial problems.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Foundations of Community Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Foundations of Community Engagement is an interactive workshop that introduces principles and practices of equitable\, ethical community engagement. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of what the term “community engagement” means\, as well as the many forms it might take - from research and course-based projects to philanthropy\, activism\, policy\, and direct service. Across all these forms of engagement\, participants will learn concepts and actions that promote equitable partnerships\, center community-defined priorities\, and disrupt entrenched power dynamics between universities and community members. Participants will also discuss real-world community engagement scenarios that ask them to apply what they’ve learned in the workshop to various situations.\n\n**This workshop is an updated version of Ginsberg’s long-standing Entering\, Engaging\, and Exiting (E3) session. SUMMARY:Meeting:Clean Up Campus Winter 2025 Mass Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Clean Up Campus will be hosting our Winter 2025 Mass Meeting on Wednesday\, January 22nd from 7-8PM in DANA1046! We will be going over some logistics about the club\, introducing ourselves and our upcoming projects this semester\, and of course meeting all of your lovely faces. We're so excited to see you there! Clean Up Campus is an environmental club at the University of Michigan. We will have general meetings biweekly on Wednesdays at 7PM at DANA 1046 in which we announce our future clean-ups\, build community\, and do fun sustainable activities! Every weekend\, we'll have one workday where we visit different parks\, rivers\, or public areas in Ann Arbor and clean up loose trash or participate in other environmental work. We provide all the supplies! There is no required commitment to our club\, but we encourage everyone to sign up for a workday whenever they can\, and we will track your service hours over the year. Make sure you join our Maize Pages so we can attribute your service hours to you. More information will be divulged during our winter mass meeting\, but feel free to email us (cleanupcampusboard@umich.edu) if you have any burning questions.
