SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Bibliophile and the Library: Private-Press Books from the Collection of Bill Heidrich
DESCRIPTION:View beautifully illustrated books that stand as remarkable testaments to the work of twentieth-century small private presses\, which\, in contrast to the trend of mass commercialization\, produced limited editions that celebrated the uniqueness of manual craftsmanship. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Debussy in Paris: Poets\, Politics\, and the Piano Intertwined
DESCRIPTION:Guest artist Catherine Kautsky\, Professor of Piano at Lawrence University\, presents a lecture-recital placing Debussy's piano music in the context of fin-de siècle Paris. We’ll look at fairies and clowns\, writers and painters\, arabesques and castanets\, and along the way we’ll encounter the many issues of race\, gender\, colonialism and nationalism that affected (and afflicted) Paris c. 1900.\n\nCATHERINE KAUTSKY\, Chair of Keyboard at Lawrence University in Appleton\, WI\, has been lauded by the *New York Times* as “a pianist who can play Mozart and Schubert as though their sentiments and habits of speech coincided exactly with hers … The music spoke directly to the listener\, with neither obfuscation nor pretense.” She was the 2016 winner of the Lawrence Excellence in Teaching Award\, the 2013 winner of the university’s Faculty Convocation Award\, and in 2017 she was honored with the George and Marjorie Olsen Chandler Chair in Music. Her recording of the Debussy *Preludes*\, released by Centaur in September 2014\, was said to “bring out all the power\, majesty\, and mystery of Debussy’s conception\,“ and a recording of the complete Brahms *Sonatas for Violin and Piano* was released in 2019 to top reviews. Ms. Kautsky\, whose teachers included Rosina Lhevinne\, Gyorgy Sebok\, Leon Fleisher\, Martin Canin\, and Gilbert Kalish\, has concertized widely\, performing in major halls such as Alice Tully Hall\, Carnegie Recital Hall\, the Phillips Collection\, Jordan Hall\, and the Chicago Cultural Center. She has soloed with numerous orchestras\, including the St. Louis Symphony and Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra\, and appeared frequently on public radio. Two sabbaticals were spent in Paris preparing performances and research on Debussy\, and she has played\, taught\, and presented masterclasses on six continents. Known as both a solo and collaborative performer\, Ms. Kautsky has performed chamber music at the Aspen\, Tanglewood\, and Grand Teton Festivals.\n\nMs. Kautsky\, whose students have won prizes across the country and gone on to leading graduate programs\, has taught at Lawrence University Conservatory of Music since 1987\, with a 6 -year hiatus as piano faculty and chair of the Keyboard Dept. at University of Wisconsin-Madison. Known for her cross-disciplinary interests\, she was awarded the Arts Institute Creative Arts Award at UW-Madison and has presented frequently at national conferences on such topics as “On the Trail of Chopin and George Sand\,” “WWI: A Centenary Look at the Musical Wars\, “ and “Celebrating Debussy and the Arts du Spectacle.” Her articles have appeared in Clavier Companion\, American Music Teacher\, and International Piano\, and her book\, *Debussy’s Paris: Piano Portraits of the Belle Epoque*\, was published by Rowman & Littlefield in September 2017. Reviewed by Booklist as \"a fascinating fusion of music\, literature\, and social history\,\" it has won accolades from eminent pianists across the country. Ms. Kautsky is also deeply concerned with the role music plays in society and administers a series of prison concerts in WI as well as heading a chapter of Music for Food.\n\nMs. Kautsky has just released a 24 video set\, “Great Works for the Piano” for *Great Courses/Wondrium*\, and is also presenting courses on piano literature for the Juilliard Extension Division and the 92nd Str. Y of New York City. Her current performances and research center on the music of Vienna in the years during and directly preceding the Holocaust\, and she has recently returned from presenting and performing at the Relais de Mémoire in Vienna. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the New England Conservatory\, a master’s from the Juilliard School\, and a doctorate from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.\n\nhttp://www.catherinekautsky.com

SUMMARY:Well-being:Heartfulness Meditation at UMich Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us this Sunday\, January 26th\, 2:00 - 3:00 P.M.\, at the Michigan Union in the Michigan Room for a relaxing and gentle introduction to heart-based meditation! No prior experience is necessary and all are welcome.\n\nWhat is Heartfulness Meditation? \n\nHeartfulness is about feeling. Our entire life is led by feelings and inspirations\, and that is the role of the heart. When we manage to listen to the heart and capture the inspiration that comes from within\, we learn to master our life. The whole exercise of fine-tuning the heart with the mind is through meditation on the heart\, and that is why it is called Heartfulness Meditation.

SUMMARY:Performance:Gershwin Centennial Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Gershwin Centennial Concert will celebrate the achievements of George and Ira Gershwin from 1925. The University Philharmonia Orchestra under Jayce Ogren will perform the rarely heard overture of the musical *Song of the Flame*\, composed by George and Herbert Stothart\, and George's *Concerto in F*\, his most ambitious composition to date and the first of his concert works that he orchestrated himself\, featuring soloist Tzu-Yin Huang. Students from SMTD's exemplary Musical Theatre Department\, accompanied by the Gershwin Initiative's own Jacob Kerzner\, will perform excerpts from the Gershwin Broadway musicals from 1925: *Song of the Flame*\, the only Gershwin collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein II (with co-lyricist Otto Harbach)\, and two of George and Ira's shows\, *Tip-Toes* and *Tell Me More* (the latter with co-lyricist Buddy DeSylva). \n\nThe concert also will have a celebration of Ira\, featuring songs he wrote with Milton Schwarzwald\, Kurt Weill\, and Harold Arlen\, in addition to remarks from Michael Owen\, author of the newly published *Ira Gershwin: A Life in Words*\, the first biography of the more unassuming member of the Gershwin duo. As a bonus\, a rediscovered song from *La\, La\, Lucille*\, George's first musical (written with DeSylva and Arthur Jackson)\, will be performed for the first time in nearly a century.\n\nPresented by the University of Michigan Gershwin Initiative and Marquee Arts\; sponsored by Arbor Brewing and Michigan Medicine.\n\nTickets $27-$52 via marquee-arts.org\nTickets only $8 plus fees for Students (w/Valid ID) in Price Tiers 2\, 3\, & 4

SUMMARY:Performance:The Kombos Collective Concert - Out of Time\, Out of Place: Hellenic Music in Diaspora
DESCRIPTION:Michael Malis (piano)\, Constantine Novotny (baritone)\, and Ellie Falaris Ganelin (flute)\n\nA look at displacement and self-discovery through the eyes of artists in the diaspora. Hellenic-American artists Michael Malis\, Constantine Novotny\, and Ellie Falaris Ganelin explore these concepts through the convergence of music and poetry. The cornerstone of the program is Malis’s original song cycle\, \"Another Shore\, Another Country\,\" set to the poetry of C.P. Cavafy\, commissioned by ProMusica Detroit and premiered in February 2024. Cavafy\, who lived most of his life in Alexandria\, Egypt\, is the quintessential voice of the Greek diaspora and a prominent figure among 20th-century poets. \n\nThrough Ganelin’s and Malis’s own arrangements\, the trio performs songs of love and longing by Greek idols Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hadjiadikis. These masterful colleagues born the same year (1925) each brought a new vision and prominence to Hellenic music through the radio in their homeland and in film worldwide. Rounding out the program is Malis’s solo piano work\, Hold Tightly Your Vision of How Things Could Be\, exploring his precarious sense of belonging between two worlds as the descendant of Greek immigrants living in America.
