SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andy Ross Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The pieces here are from a large series of works made over the last several years. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. He received a BFA degree from College for Creative Studies\, and an MFA degree from University of Michigan. He has taught photography\, art\, and web design at colleges in California and Michigan. His photographs and collages have been exhibited in schools\, galleries\, and museums across the United States.

DESCRIPTION:This body of work represents a playful exploration of form\, color\, and scale through the lens of cellular shapes. Inspired by the complex patterns of biological life\, the pieces are a celebration of growth\, transformation\, and the joy of experimentation. The use of non-precious materials\, such as wood balls and paint\, allowed for a liberating approach to composition and color\, while the spherical forms and circular panels evoke the look of petri dishes—symbolizing both scientific curiosity and organic development.\nBorn in Detroit\, Elizabeth is a multidisciplinary artist and mother based in the metro Detroit area\, where she works from a studio in her home. With a background in bench jewelry\, her earlier work focused on studio jewelry and was represented by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal.\nElizabeth’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. She holds a BA in Jewelry Design\, with First Class Honours\, from Central Saint Martins in London\, a BFA from the University of Michigan\, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, where she specialized in Metalsmithing and Architecture. Her diverse practice spans jewelry\, sculpture\, and installation\, blending materials and techniques to explore themes of production\, growth\, transformation\, and organic form.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Red Summer: Racial Violence in the American Landscape\, 1917-1923
DESCRIPTION:The Red Summer portfolio represents the stories of various locations in the American landscape where racial violence (often characterized as “Race Wars” at the time) erupted between 1917 and 1923. These years of conflict reveal several aspects of racial anxiety that inform our contemporary experience\, including\, though not limited to\; racism\, fear of violent black revolt\, lynching\, poverty\, mass incarceration\, and competition for employment. The term “Red Summer” was first used by James Weldon Johnson to describe the violent attacks against black communities during 1919.  \n\nThough the events of the early twentieth century seem to be remote and fading apparitions of an American past\; my work is concerned with the power and influence of our shared historical narrative upon the present. The upheaval of Red Summer occurred approximately fifty years after the American Civil War\, fifty years before the height of the Civil Rights Era\, and three centuries after the first enslaved Africans arrived in English colonies that would become the United States. \n\nThe project combines photographs of the contemporary landscape made at or near the site of racial conflict with fragmented selections of contemporaneous newspaper reporting (1917-1923). In many cases\, the newsprint images include the surrounding stories or advertisements. The combination of the landscape photograph and the reproduction of newspaper fragments (which invade the contemporary with a narrative from the past)\, is a rupture and a conversation on the timeline between past and present.

DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Impossible Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Impossible Conversations is an exhibition and film installation by artists and filmmakers\, Pratāp Rughani and David Chung. The film centers a seemingly impossible dialogue between Arno Michaelis\, a former Neo-Nazi gang founder and Pardeep Kaleka\, son of the Sikh Temple President\, Satwant Singh Kaleka\, one of seven people killed in the shooting attack at the Oak Creek Sikh Temple (Gurudwara) by a white supremacist in 2012. \n \nThe film installation explores what happens when – for over a decade – Pardeep and Arno committed to a path of restorative communication - to listen deeply and connect with what motivates each other in the genesis and aftermath of atrocity.\nHow does healing begin? From the toxic polarization\, division and extreme racist violence that resulted in one of the worst mass shootings at a religious site in American history\, Pardeep insists that complete healing must eventually be a collective process for all\, to liberate both sides.\nAt Stamps Gallery\, Impossible Conversations will be accompanied by a dialogue and research room as well as photomurals that expand on the themes of restorative justice\, gun violence\, and how to sustain difficult dialogues to combat extremism and toxic polarization. \nExhibition curated by Srimoyee Mitra. His work develops documentary practice to enable people of radically different perspectives come into relation\, sometimes in the aftermath of violence and atrocity for example in South Africa\, Aboriginal Australia\, Europe\, Rwanda and the USA. Configuring a pro-filmic space to enable shared “witnessing” and the path towards restorative justice is a driving force in “Impossible Conversations” evolving through his practice in over thirty documentary films and exhibitions for BBC TV\, Channel 4\, Modern Art Oxford\, galleries and activist groups. The ethics of giving sustained attention to the experiences of marginalized\, excluded or sometimes reviled “others” and bringing them in relationship to the broader culture is central to his research into ethics of storytelling and the development of “Restorative Narrative.”\nRughani writes widely on the ethics of creative practice\, serves on several editorial Boards\, has won awards for film\, teaching\, and research\, and is Professor of Documentary Practices at the University of the Arts\, London.\nDavid Chung is an acclaimed visual artist and filmmaker. His work focuses on how identities are shaped in immigrant communities and the challenges of refugees as they integrate into new homelands.\nChung has exhibited his drawings\, prints\, and video installations at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts\, the Asia Society\, the Walker Arts Center\, the Studio Museum in Harlem\, the Gwangju Biennale\, the Smithsonian Institution\, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Chung has received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and the National Board Film Board of Canada's Award for Best Documentary Film. He was the 2013 Kim Koo Visiting Professor at Harvard University. \nChung is a professor and the director of the MFA Graduate Program at the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.

DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

DESCRIPTION:Ultralight dark photons are dark matter candidates supported by a burgeoning direct-detection program searching for their kinetic mixing with the ordinary photon. A dark photon's dynamics in the early Universe\, however\, can easily breach the validity of the low-energy effective theory for a massive vector field\, with disastrous consequences for its viability as a dark matter candidate. I will assess the extent to which the direct detection of dark photon dark matter would require a nonminimal dark sector. Specifically\, I will survey the detection prospects of known dark photon production mechanisms\, outline model-building strategies that are viable in expanded parameter space\, and discuss complementary cosmological and astrophysical signatures that could probe the physics responsible for dark photon production.

DESCRIPTION:University Carillonist Tiffany Ng performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.d

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Cosmology\, Astro seminar | Massive neutrinos and cosmic composition
DESCRIPTION:Cosmological observations provide a leading method to measure the only unknown mass parameters in the Standard Model---the neutrino masses\, whose measurement is a major goal of experiments in the coming decade. Recent data\, however\, hint at an unexpected incompatibility with the expected cosmological signatures of massive neutrinos\, even if they were as light as allowed by neutrino oscillation experiments. I will describe the physical effects of massive neutrinos\, clarifying the distinct roles of geometry and the growth of structure in determining joint constraints from various cosmological observations. Highlighting the importance of geometry\, discrepancies in current measurements of the late-time expansion history lead to surprisingly tight constraints on neutrino masses for some dataset combinations\, but for others instead yield marginal detections thereof. I will also comment on the implications of these findings for the possibility of nonminimal neutrino physics at play in the late Universe.

DESCRIPTION:I will recap the framework developed by June Huh and collaborators for establishing Rota's Conjecture on the log-concavity of characteristic polynomials of matroids. In particular\, I will discuss how the existence of Hodge-Riemann relations in the Chow ring of a matroid imply log-concavity of the characteristic polynomials. Furthermore\, I will outline how we can use properties of \"volume polynomials\" of the Chow ring to establish the existence of the desired Hodge-Riemann relations. At the conclusion of this talk\, we will discuss the plan for the talks for the rest of the semester.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Physics Department Martin Luther King Colloquium | Justice in Science: Where We Stand at Times of Challenge and Controversy
DESCRIPTION:The title of my talk was inspired by Dr. King’s quote regarding “The ultimate measure of a man” [person]. It is not where one stands in moments of comfort and convenience but where one stands at times of challenge and controversy.\n\nI began college during the Civil Rights era\, at the height of Dr. King’s work to promote social justice. After a K-12 education in the segregated schools of Birmingham\, Alabama\, I chose to pursue a career in science. This choice was not only a personal decision or a patriotic act but\, in many ways\, an act of resistance. By following my interests\, I resisted the label that\, as a young Black woman\, I might be intellectually unfit to study science. \n\nEchoes of the past continue to swirl in today’s conversations about who can and cannot do science. This presentation will explore the meaning of “justice in science” and discuss positive changes that might open science to diversity and lived experiences that promote excellence.\n\nBackground: Shirley Malcom is Senior Advisor to the CEO and Director of the SEA Change initiative at American Association for the Advancement of Sciences (AAAS). She works to improve the quality and increase access to education and careers in STEM fields\, as well as to enhance public science literacy. Dr. Malcom is a trustee of Caltech and a regent of Morgan State University\, and a member of the SUNY Research Council. She is a former member of the National Science Board\, the policymaking body of the National Science Foundation\, and served on President Clinton’s Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology. Malcom\, a native of Birmingham\, Alabama\, received her Ph.D. in ecology from The Pennsylvania State University\, a master's in zoology from UCLA\, and a bachelor’s with distinction in zoology from the University of Washington. She holds 16 honorary degrees.

DESCRIPTION:In this talk we will investigate twists of reductive groups while paying a particular close attention to tori. In the situation of tori\, understanding the various twists that can arise is somewhat easier to understand. I will then explain how one can construct twists of reductive subgroups inside a given reductive group. For example\, I will explain how one can construct an outer form and an inner form of SL(3) inside the group G_2. The machinery that I will develop can be readily applied to any reductive group that you like.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nEvolution was able to produce living systems with unfettered complexity\, solely by optimizing a simple emergent feature—reproductive fitness. In many ways\, this task shares features with learning in machine systems allowing us to draw parallels between evolution and deep neural networks. One of the keys to successful learning in both artificial and living systems is training in the context of variable conditions\, and it is this limitation that I propose as a theoretical underpinning of the phenomenon of biology aging. While Darwinian Evolution elegantly hints at how the highly ordered complex structures that define living matter evolved\, we are still left wondering why such systems inevitably perish. Many theories have been proposed over the years that can generally be grouped into three categories: programmed\, damage-based\, or quasi-programmed. I propose a novel theory of aging that falls in the category of quasi-programmed\, yet at the same time\, frames quasi-programmed theories in the context of optimization constraints in living systems. In essence\, I propose the following: that the programs employed by living systems have been highly optimized for fitness via selection. However\, as with AI models\, successful performance in these systems is predicated on the context to which they were trained. As described by proponents of evolutionary theories\, the forces of natural selection decline with age and from this perspective\, one can also frame this as a dearth of exposure to the context of old age during “evolutionary training”. Thus\, the systems will still employ the policies it had learned under the training contexts (e.g. the young organismal state with high fitness potential)\, however these policies can be inappropriate or even detrimental under the never-before-seen context (e.g. the old organism with low fitness potential). Finally\, I will discuss the application of multi-scale AI/ML models for capturing the complex phenomena of aging and learning how to optimize health.

DESCRIPTION:Conformal welding is an operation that encodes a large class of Jordan curves on the Riemann sphere\, including the loop version of Schramm–Loewner evolution (SLE)\, in terms of circle homeomorphisms. In this talk\, I will discuss a Cameron–Martin type quasi-invariance result for the SLE loop measure under the right group action by Weil–Petersson circle homeomorphisms on the welding homeomorphism. While this result was hinted at by Carfagnini and Wang's identification of the Onsager–Machlup action functional of the SLE loop measure with the Kähler potential of the unique right-invariant Kähler metric on the group of Weil–Petersson circle homeomorphisms (Loewner energy)\, the group structure of SLE welding has been little understood previously. Our proof is based on the characterization of the composition operator associated with Weil–Petersson circle homeomorphisms using Hilbert–Schmidt operators and the description of the SLE loop measure in terms of the welding of two independent quantum disks by Ang\, Holden\, and Sun. This is joint work with Shuo Fan (Tsinghua University and IHES).

DESCRIPTION:Gromov initiated a program to prove statements of the following form: Suppose we are given two simplicial complexes X and Y\, where X is “complicated” and Y is lower dimensional. Then any map f: X-> Y must have at least one \"complicated” fiber. In this talk I will describe various results of this kind for compact locally symmetric spaces\, that are proved by bringing new tools into the picture from minimal surface theory and representation theory. Much of the talk will be focused on octonionic hyperbolic manifolds\, the case where our approach seems to work best. If time permits I will also discuss some applications to systolic geometry\, global fixed point theorems for actions of higher rank lattices on contractible CAT(0) simplicial complexes\, and/or a connection to recent work by Connell-McReynolds-Wang involving homology vanishing theorems for infinite covolume discrete subgroups of SL(n\,R).  Based on joint work with Mikolaj Fraczyk.  \n\nIn the first talk I will focus on giving background on Gromov's program for proving waist inequalities\, and the necessary ingredients from representation theory and the theory of minimal submanifolds.  The second talk will not assume that you went to the first talk.

DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, I will address a continuous-time principal-agent problem featuring multiple lump-sum payments (contracts) scheduled at predetermined times. Using the methodology introduced by Cvitanić\, Possamaï\, and Touzi\, we reformulate the non-zero-sum Stackelberg game between the principal and the agent as a standard stochastic optimal control problem. We establish that the principal's value function is the unique viscosity solution of sequential constrained Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations. Subsequently\, we apply this framework to a benchmark model to investigate the impact of various factors\, such as payment frequency\, payment distribution\, discount rates\, and the agent's reservation utility\, on the principal's value. This work is a collaboration with Guillermo Alvarez\, Erhan Bayraktar\, and Ibrahim Ekren.

DESCRIPTION:Periodic domains with circular cross sections are common in biophysical simulations. Applications include cell transport through blood vessels\, flow past porous media\, optimize drug delivery\, and many more. Boundary integral equation (BIE) methods are a strong and active field of research for this kind of simulation due to its dimension reduction. In this talk we cover efforts to speed up the BIE method when the domain is periodic and contained in an axisymmetric structure (water in a pipe). We also cover special quadratures to address the singularities arising from this method.\n\nCasual Networking Mixer:\nGraduate students\, postdocs\, and faculty\, especially those working in Applied Math are invited to a casual networking mixer after the talk. DESCRIPTION:Detroit’s Queen of the Blues\n\nInternational singer\, songwriter and Independent recording artist\, was awarded by the Detroit Blues Society “Living Lifetime Achievement Award” and awarded a star on the Canada South Blues Museum “Walk of Fame”.  In 2015 Thornetta was crowned “Detroit’s Queen of the Blues” in a ceremony by the Detroit Blues Society\, with proclamations from the City of Detroit\, County of Wayne and the State of Michigan. She has performed with and opened for Bob Seger\, Blues Legends such as B.B. King\, Sir Mac Rice\, Ray Charles\, Etta James\, KoKo Taylor\, Johnny Johnson\, Bonnie Raitt and more. \n\nThornetta is a ten time Blues Music Award Nominee including 2024 for best Soul/Blues Artist female and the Winner of the 2023 Blues Music Awards for Best Soul/Blues Artist Female. Thornetta is also winner of over 30 Detroit Music Awards.
