SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andy Ross Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The pieces here are from a large series of works made over the last several years. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. He received a BFA degree from College for Creative Studies\, and an MFA degree from University of Michigan. He has taught photography\, art\, and web design at colleges in California and Michigan. His photographs and collages have been exhibited in schools\, galleries\, and museums across the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Chimera
DESCRIPTION:*Chimera* is an immersive exhibition centered on a newly commissioned film\, also titled *Chimera*\, which fuses elements from Newsome's prior works *Hands Performance* and *Build or Destroy* with a new interquel film that bridges their narratives. This connecting piece explores the origins and journey of the bejeweled figure in flames from *Build or Destroy*\, revealing where they come from and the purpose that led them to Earth. This exhibition reflects a bold shift in Newsome's practice toward sci-fi filmmaking\, layering the architecture of film\, movement\, and world-building to probe themes of identity\, resistance\, and creation. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Elizabeth Boyd-Hartmann Dizik Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This body of work represents a playful exploration of form\, color\, and scale through the lens of cellular shapes. Inspired by the complex patterns of biological life\, the pieces are a celebration of growth\, transformation\, and the joy of experimentation. The use of non-precious materials\, such as wood balls and paint\, allowed for a liberating approach to composition and color\, while the spherical forms and circular panels evoke the look of petri dishes—symbolizing both scientific curiosity and organic development.\nBorn in Detroit\, Elizabeth is a multidisciplinary artist and mother based in the metro Detroit area\, where she works from a studio in her home. With a background in bench jewelry\, her earlier work focused on studio jewelry and was represented by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal.\nElizabeth’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. She holds a BA in Jewelry Design\, with First Class Honours\, from Central Saint Martins in London\, a BFA from the University of Michigan\, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, where she specialized in Metalsmithing and Architecture. Her diverse practice spans jewelry\, sculpture\, and installation\, blending materials and techniques to explore themes of production\, growth\, transformation\, and organic form.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Red Summer: Racial Violence in the American Landscape\, 1917-1923
DESCRIPTION:The Red Summer portfolio represents the stories of various locations in the American landscape where racial violence (often characterized as “Race Wars” at the time) erupted between 1917 and 1923. These years of conflict reveal several aspects of racial anxiety that inform our contemporary experience\, including\, though not limited to\; racism\, fear of violent black revolt\, lynching\, poverty\, mass incarceration\, and competition for employment. The term “Red Summer” was first used by James Weldon Johnson to describe the violent attacks against black communities during 1919. \n\nThough the events of the early twentieth century seem to be remote and fading apparitions of an American past\; my work is concerned with the power and influence of our shared historical narrative upon the present. The upheaval of Red Summer occurred approximately fifty years after the American Civil War\, fifty years before the height of the Civil Rights Era\, and three centuries after the first enslaved Africans arrived in English colonies that would become the United States. \n\nThe project combines photographs of the contemporary landscape made at or near the site of racial conflict with fragmented selections of contemporaneous newspaper reporting (1917-1923). In many cases\, the newsprint images include the surrounding stories or advertisements. The combination of the landscape photograph and the reproduction of newspaper fragments (which invade the contemporary with a narrative from the past)\, is a rupture and a conversation on the timeline between past and present.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Redefining the Crown
DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Bibliophile and the Library: Private-Press Books from the Collection of Bill Heidrich
DESCRIPTION:View beautifully illustrated books that stand as remarkable testaments to the work of twentieth-century small private presses\, which\, in contrast to the trend of mass commercialization\, produced limited editions that celebrated the uniqueness of manual craftsmanship. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Impossible Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Impossible Conversations is an exhibition and film installation by artists and filmmakers\, Pratāp Rughani and David Chung. The film centers a seemingly impossible dialogue between Arno Michaelis\, a former Neo-Nazi gang founder and Pardeep Kaleka\, son of the Sikh Temple President\, Satwant Singh Kaleka\, one of seven people killed in the shooting attack at the Oak Creek Sikh Temple (Gurudwara) by a white supremacist in 2012. \n \nThe film installation explores what happens when – for over a decade – Pardeep and Arno committed to a path of restorative communication - to listen deeply and connect with what motivates each other in the genesis and aftermath of atrocity.\nHow does healing begin? From the toxic polarization\, division and extreme racist violence that resulted in one of the worst mass shootings at a religious site in American history\, Pardeep insists that complete healing must eventually be a collective process for all\, to liberate both sides.\nAt Stamps Gallery\, Impossible Conversations will be accompanied by a dialogue and research room as well as photomurals that expand on the themes of restorative justice\, gun violence\, and how to sustain difficult dialogues to combat extremism and toxic polarization. \nExhibition curated by Srimoyee Mitra. Impossible Conversations has been supported in part by the Arts Research: Incubation &amp\; Acceleration (ARIA) program of The University of Michigan Office of the Vice President Research and the Arts Initiative\, Institute of Firearm Prevention Pilot Grant\, the Stamps School of Art and Design\, and the University of the Arts London. \nExhibition Programs\nAn Opening Screening\, Talkback\, and Reception will take place on Friday\, January 17\, 2025 from 5:30 – 8 p.m.\, and a Symposium will take place on Saturday\, January 18\, 2025 from 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. \nAbout the Artists\nPratāp Rughani is a writer and non-fiction filmmaker. His work develops documentary practice to enable people of radically different perspectives come into relation\, sometimes in the aftermath of violence and atrocity for example in South Africa\, Aboriginal Australia\, Europe\, Rwanda and the USA. Configuring a pro-filmic space to enable shared “witnessing” and the path towards restorative justice is a driving force in “Impossible Conversations” evolving through his practice in over thirty documentary films and exhibitions for BBC TV\, Channel 4\, Modern Art Oxford\, galleries and activist groups. The ethics of giving sustained attention to the experiences of marginalized\, excluded or sometimes reviled “others” and bringing them in relationship to the broader culture is central to his research into ethics of storytelling and the development of “Restorative Narrative.”\nRughani writes widely on the ethics of creative practice\, serves on several editorial Boards\, has won awards for film\, teaching\, and research\, and is Professor of Documentary Practices at the University of the Arts\, London.\nDavid Chung is an acclaimed visual artist and filmmaker. His work focuses on how identities are shaped in immigrant communities and the challenges of refugees as they integrate into new homelands.\nChung has exhibited his drawings\, prints\, and video installations at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts\, the Asia Society\, the Walker Arts Center\, the Studio Museum in Harlem\, the Gwangju Biennale\, the Smithsonian Institution\, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Chung has received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and the National Board Film Board of Canada's Award for Best Documentary Film. He was the 2013 Kim Koo Visiting Professor at Harvard University. \nChung is a professor and the director of the MFA Graduate Program at the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Stampede
DESCRIPTION:Born from their passion for the arts\, The Stampede is a student-led organization building a new space for artists. In September 2023\, four undergraduates united with a simple mission: to create a space for showcasing exciting new art work. They established a foundation and worked to build a buzz through outreach and excitement. The Stampede first hosted a pop-up exhibition (party) at a friend's house\, exhibiting 53 pieces of original work\, with food\, drink\, and music\, and a smashing turnout from the local community. They have since evolved\, developed an infrastructure\, and grown into a platform for dynamic art work.\nToday\, The Stampede curates and facilitates exhibitions and events that bring together artists\, writers\, and musicians. From pop-ups and art markets to concerts and gallery shows\, they provide a vibrant platform for creativity for the community. The organization has broken new ground on multiple accounts to pave new ways for artists today and tomorrow\; bridging the divide between student and school. Functioning as an artist collective\, The Stampede focus on creating large-scale artworks\, promotional materials\, and merchandise for their events.\nThis exhibition offers a glimpse behind the scenes of The Stampede: its origins\, current endeavors\, and future aspirations. Since its inception\, The Stampede has continuously surprised with its growth and transformation. Committed to providing opportunities for artists\, they will keep hosting events for their community and friends.\nJoin The Stampede in their journey\; they invite you to... RUN WITH US!

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Engineering an Inclusive Culture and Learning Environment
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Workforce development in engineering is crucial to meeting the growing demand for skilled professionals in local and global projects. This talk is inspired by and grounded in my prior work studying the intersection of engineering education and workforce development\, highlighting the importance of bridging gaps between working professionals\, faculty\, and students to sustain a robust talent pool. Drawing from my experiences in engineering education research within the civil engineering field\, I will share my methodological approaches\, employing qualitative case study methods. I will also present findings that make implications for addressing critical challenges in engineering education. The presentation is going to conclude with a discussion of future research directions\, including improving mentoring practices\, nurturing professional development opportunities and environment\, and fostering academic success for engineering students. This talk aims to encourage collaborative efforts to build inclusive and effective learning environments.\n\nBiography: Dr. Hwangbo Bae\, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Michigan\, focuses on professional development\, mentoring practices\, and cultural capital in engineering. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Florida\, and MS and BS from Virginia Tech. His research explores the people aspects of engineering\, emphasizing acquisition of professional skills\, career preparation\, and fostering inclusive learning environment for underrepresented groups\, particularly Asian women in civil engineering. Grounded in qualitative research\, he primarily employs Yin's case study approach. Through his research\, he aims to foster learning environments where engineering students receive sufficient mentoring and professional development opportunities for their career advancement.

You can’t deny that there’s something about a black-and-white photograph that feels… stuffy. With portraits showing people with their shirts buttoned right to the neck and everything in shades of gray and brown\, our imaginations can incline to thinking of the past as a bit staid\, if not downright dull. But look a little closer\, and you’ll see signs that the fashion choices available to those who came before us were more colorful than you might first think. From the fabrics they wore\, to the games they played\, or the books they read\, their world was alive with bright hues. This exhibit invites you to reimagine history with a fuller color palette and picture the vibrancy and joy that just might be hidden behind the unsmiling photographs.\n\nExhibition opening weekdays from 12-4.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Bridging Legal Worlds: Jewish Women as Litigants before a German Imperial Supreme Court
DESCRIPTION:In 1495\, Germany’s Imperial Chamber Court (Reichskammergericht) was founded as the institution that oversaw the adoption of Roman law as Germany’s imperial civil law. In 1511\, a Jewish woman named Elena\, who sued her husband and his lover for violating Jewish law (halakha)\, became the first Jewish litigant before this new tribunal\, opening the doors of the highest level of the imperial legal system to many Jews who would follow suit. Focusing on the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries\, this lecture will explore the experiences of Jewish women who traversed legal and religious boundaries to litigate before this supreme imperial court and other competing imperial courts. This talk will consider previously untapped court cases from this period as invaluable sources for illuminating the lives of these women\, the ways in which they navigated Jewish\, imperial\, and local laws\, and how their litigation helped fashion Jews’ legal standing in the eyes of imperial jurists.\n\n\nTamar Menashe is the Jay and Leslie Cohen assistant professor in Emory University’s history department and the Tam institute for Jewish Studies. Menashe’s work focuses on the intersections of the law with gender\, culture\, and Christian-Jewish relations\, primarily in the German Lands in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. She holds a BA from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem\, and MA\, Mphil and PhD from Columbia University (2022). Her dissertation “The Imperial Supreme Court and Jews in Cross-Confessional Legal Cultures in Germany\, 1495–1690” won the 2022 Fritz Stern Dissertation Prize for the best doctoral dissertation on a topic in German history written at a North American university. She is currently revising her dissertation for a publication as a book titled People of the Law: Jewish Litigation and Minority Belonging in Early Modern Germany. Prior to joining the Emory faculty in 2023\, Menashe was a Fellow at the Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. She was the 2023 Preyer scholar of the American Society for Legal history and the 2023-2024 Gerald Westheimer Early Career Fellow at the Leo Baeck Institute New York-Berlin.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:International Students Career Series: How to Navigate Small Talk
DESCRIPTION:In the United States\, many people participate in what is called \"small talk\"\, where you make conversation with strangers or acquaintances about non-controversial topics\, such as the weather\, sports\, or popular television shows. “Small talk” is one of the ways in American culture to chat about harmless topics in order to establish a connection and start to build a friendship. For example\, while waiting for an interview\, in line at a M-Den\, or in an elevator on campus\, don’t be startled if a stranger says something to you like\, “Did you watch the FootballGame last night? What a game!” They might also make a joke about the long line you’re both in\, or comment on the current situation. If you areinterested in learning more about \"small talk\"\, now it’s your chance to sign up for this workshop on how to navigate small talk as an international student. In this workshop\, we will educate you on what is small talk and you will also have the chance to practice small talk with Peers!

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe metabolic underpinnings of immune cells in various inflamed tissues\, such as the implant microenvironment or the diseased heart\, are poorly understood. For instance\, polylactide (PLA) is the most widely used biopolymer in medicine. Yet\, for decades\, PLA had been thought to activate immune cells by reducing surrounding pH because PLA biodegrades into monomers and oligomers of lactic acid. During my talk\, I will discuss an alternative paradigm underscoring immune cell metabolism (immunometabolism) as the pivotal determinant of the proinflammatory versus pro-regenerative tissue microenvironment with biodegradable and non-biodegradable biomaterial examples. Further related to tissue engineering\, I will present on reversing established cardiac dysfunction and fibrosis in heart failure (following myocardial infarction) via targeted and enzyme-responsive nanomaterials. Finally\, I will unveil my vision to revolutionize therapeutic strategies for the various phenotypes of heart failure by leveraging the metabolic underpinnings of immune and stromal cell populations\, thereby engineering next-generation clinical interventions that shape the future of medicine.\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/94337625486

Resolve\, the primary instrument on XRISM\, provides high-resolution (~5 eV) X-ray spectra of various X-ray sources\, including extended sources like galaxy clusters. This capability enables direct kinematic mapping of hot gas in many galaxy clusters for the first time. In this talk\, I will highlight some of the results from observations of galaxy clusters taken during the first year of the mission. In particular\, I will discuss a “double-cascade” of velocities found in the core of the Perseus cluster\, stormy weather of the Coma cluster and unusual properties of the velocity power spectrum\, gas kinematic properties in a relaxed cluster A2029 out to cosmologically interesting radii\, among other exciting results.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:DE Seminar: On the traveling and stationary wave problems for a system of viscous shallow water equations
DESCRIPTION:There is a rich history of the study of traveling wave solutions to the free boundary Euler equations \n- otherwise known as the water wave problem\; nevertheless\, it is only within the last six years\nthat the analogous study of traveling wave solutions to free boundary fluids with viscosity - such\nas the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations - has commenced. Even more recently\, this traveling\nwave study has expanded to a larger family of dissipative fluid systems including compressible flows\,\nfluids obeying Darcy’s law\, and the shallow water equations.\nThis talk focuses specifically on the shallow water equation’s version of the water wave problem.\nThe shallow water equations\, which are derived from the free boundary Navier-Stokes equations\nwith Navier slip boundary conditions via a rescaling\, asymptotic expansion\, and depth-averaging\nprocedure\, are both mathematically and computationally important. For these equations we shall\ndiscuss three recent results: (1) the traveling wave problem and the limits of vanishing viscosity\nand capillarity\, (2) the existence of families of two-dimensional roll wave solutions\, and (3) the\nstationary wave problem with variable bathymetry and the nature of large solutions.\nThese theorems are unified by the fact the main engine of their proofs is the implicit function\ntheorem\, although each result utilizes a different manifestation. These are a Nash-Moser variant\nto handle derivative loss\, a multiparameter bifurcation theorem\, and an analytic global implicit\nfunction theorem.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - Eco-metabolomics and the cryptic chemical traits that underpin plant ecology
DESCRIPTION:Fundamental hypotheses concerning the maintenance and generation of diversity in ecological communities posit a central role for the differences among plants in metabolites that function as defenses against herbivores and pathogens. Yet the vast diversity of plant chemical defenses has traditionally precluded community-level studies of chemical ecology. Here\, I use untargeted metabolomics based on mass spectrometry to identify\, classify\, and compare the structures of >10\,000 unique foliar metabolites from 314 tree species recorded in the BCI 50-ha forest dynamics plot and >20\,000 metabolites from 906 species sampled in 16 1-ha forest plots representing an elevational gradient in the tropical Andes in Bolivia. I ask whether species metabolomes define niches by i) contributing to density-dependent mortality driven by enemy-mediated competition and ii) varying over elevational and environmental gradients. I find that seedling survival is reduced by heterospecific neighbors that are similar with respect to secondary metabolites\, but enhanced by similarity to primary metabolites on BCI. Further\, chemical dissimilarity of co-occurring species declines with elevation but increases with species diversity in the tropical Andes\, whereas chemical properties associated with light absorbance\, polarity\, and topological complexity vary in ways that suggest variation in the sources of selection on plant metabolomes over elevational gradients.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: Divergent Connections: Participating in the Indian Ocean World from East Africa’s Interior\, ca. 1000-1800
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the history of the East African port city of Mombasa from the vantage point of communities that lived along its rural edges. The Mijikenda speaking communities that lived adjacent to Mombasa rejected many of the cosmopolitan practices scholars understand as central to Indian Ocean communities. They emphasized smaller villages over urbanism\, local ritual practices over Islam\, and inland trade over maritime commerce. This talk examines the interrelationship between inland ritual networks and oceanic trade to show how seemingly alienating social pursuits were in fact key to Mijikenda speakers’ participation and influence in the premodern Indian Ocean.\n\nDavid Bresnahan is an assistant professor of history at the University of Utah. He is the author of Inland from Mombasa: East Africa and the Making of the Indian Ocean World (University of California Press\, 2025). His other research has appeared in Journal of World History\, the Journal of Eastern African Studies\, and the International Journal of African Historical Studies. \n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIA Lecture | Decolonizing Museums and the Case of the “Elgin Marbles”: Exceptionalism vs. Solidarity
DESCRIPTION:The so-called Elgin Marbles are one of the best-known cases of contested cultural objects in museums. They comprise a large group of sculptures and reliefs that were removed from the Parthenon temple in Athens by a British lord in the early 19th century. Today\, they reside in the British Museum. Greece has been actively seeking their return since the 1980s\, and many international organizations have advocated on Greece’s behalf\, including several in Britain. This talk will examine the arguments that have been made in support of the Greek case and how they have changed over time. In particular\, the talk will focus on long-standing assertions about the alleged “exceptionalism” of the Parthenon sculptures and whether such arguments help or harm the larger cause of the decolonization of museums.\n\nDr. Elizabeth Marlowe is a professor of art history\, the chair of the art department\, and the founder and director of the program in Museum Studies at Colgate University. She is an AIA Joukowsky Lecturer for the 2024–2025 National Lecture Program season.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public\, sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America. Please join us in Room 125 of Newberry Hall at the Kelsey Museum.\n\nIf you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event\, visit our accessibility page at https://myumi.ch/zwPkd or contact the education office by calling (734) 647-4167. SUMMARY:Film Screening:CSAS South Asian Film Festival | Wakhri
DESCRIPTION:CSAS will be kicking off this year's Pakistan Conference with the screening of Wakhri\, along with a Q&A with its filmmaker\, at the Michigan Theater.\n\nFilmmaker Iram Parveen Bilal takes inspiration from the story of Qandeel Baloch in crafting this compelling drama. Baloch was Pakistan’s first social media celebrity\, who often used her platform to speak out against the patriarchy\, until her brother murdered her in an act of “honor” killing. Her life planted the seeds from which spring this film’s widowed schoolteacher Noor and her queer best friend Guchhi. To live out their dreams and aspirations\, the pair leads double lives. In bright makeup and flashy wigs\, Noor and Guchhi adopt brash\, fearless social media personas\, representing a freedom so enticing that people can’t look away. Too often the cinemascape has portrayed Muslim women and queer people from the Global South as victimized objects of pity. Wakhri has a different tale to tell\, one that celebrates the resilience with which its protagonists demand equality within a flawed society.\n \nFilm trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7xs0fif2fo\n \n For tickets\, please visit: https://marquee-arts.org/event-page/tickets/?showingId=907392\n \n The screening is free and open to the public.\n \n *Made possible with the generous support of the Title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education.*

A two-time GRAMMY Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning singer and instrumentalist\, MacArthur “Genius” grant recipient\, and composer of opera\, ballet\, and film\, Giddens has centered her work around the mission of lifting up people whose contributions to American musical history have previously been overlooked or erased\, and advocating for a more accurate understanding of the country’s musical origins through art.\n\nPhilippa Pham Hughes is a social sculptor\, educator\, and writer. Currently at the University of Michigan\, she serves as a Visiting Artist at the Museum of Art and a Lecturer at the Ford School of Public Policy. He also holds affiliate appointments in American Culture\, African and Afro-American Studies\, Non-Profit Management\, and Entrepreneurship. His recent projects focus on the United States national anthem\, diversity in music historiography and education\, most recently through the exploration of African-American song\; career trajectories in the performing arts\; and critical editing. Clague strives to understand the social impact of the arts in the United States of America and to share this understanding with students\, scholars\, and the public. His scholarly interests center on questions of how music forges and shapes community relationships\, amplifying the art of sound as a social force that is simultaneously personal and communal\, both a powerful emotional expression and an everyday tool for living.\n\nFirst 30 guests will receive a copy of Molly Spencer's new book 'Invitatory' (Parlor Press\, 2024).
