SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andy Ross Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The pieces here are from a large series of works made over the last several years. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. He received a BFA degree from College for Creative Studies\, and an MFA degree from University of Michigan. He has taught photography\, art\, and web design at colleges in California and Michigan. His photographs and collages have been exhibited in schools\, galleries\, and museums across the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Chimera
DESCRIPTION:*Chimera* is an immersive exhibition centered on a newly commissioned film\, also titled *Chimera*\, which fuses elements from Newsome's prior works *Hands Performance* and *Build or Destroy* with a new interquel film that bridges their narratives. This connecting piece explores the origins and journey of the bejeweled figure in flames from *Build or Destroy*\, revealing where they come from and the purpose that led them to Earth. This exhibition reflects a bold shift in Newsome's practice toward sci-fi filmmaking\, layering the architecture of film\, movement\, and world-building to probe themes of identity\, resistance\, and creation. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Elizabeth Boyd-Hartmann Dizik Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This body of work represents a playful exploration of form\, color\, and scale through the lens of cellular shapes. Inspired by the complex patterns of biological life\, the pieces are a celebration of growth\, transformation\, and the joy of experimentation. The use of non-precious materials\, such as wood balls and paint\, allowed for a liberating approach to composition and color\, while the spherical forms and circular panels evoke the look of petri dishes—symbolizing both scientific curiosity and organic development.\nBorn in Detroit\, Elizabeth is a multidisciplinary artist and mother based in the metro Detroit area\, where she works from a studio in her home. With a background in bench jewelry\, her earlier work focused on studio jewelry and was represented by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal.\nElizabeth’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. She holds a BA in Jewelry Design\, with First Class Honours\, from Central Saint Martins in London\, a BFA from the University of Michigan\, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, where she specialized in Metalsmithing and Architecture. Her diverse practice spans jewelry\, sculpture\, and installation\, blending materials and techniques to explore themes of production\, growth\, transformation\, and organic form.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Red Summer: Racial Violence in the American Landscape\, 1917-1923
DESCRIPTION:The Red Summer portfolio represents the stories of various locations in the American landscape where racial violence (often characterized as “Race Wars” at the time) erupted between 1917 and 1923. These years of conflict reveal several aspects of racial anxiety that inform our contemporary experience\, including\, though not limited to\; racism\, fear of violent black revolt\, lynching\, poverty\, mass incarceration\, and competition for employment. The term “Red Summer” was first used by James Weldon Johnson to describe the violent attacks against black communities during 1919. \n\nThough the events of the early twentieth century seem to be remote and fading apparitions of an American past\; my work is concerned with the power and influence of our shared historical narrative upon the present. The upheaval of Red Summer occurred approximately fifty years after the American Civil War\, fifty years before the height of the Civil Rights Era\, and three centuries after the first enslaved Africans arrived in English colonies that would become the United States. \n\nThe project combines photographs of the contemporary landscape made at or near the site of racial conflict with fragmented selections of contemporaneous newspaper reporting (1917-1923). In many cases\, the newsprint images include the surrounding stories or advertisements. The combination of the landscape photograph and the reproduction of newspaper fragments (which invade the contemporary with a narrative from the past)\, is a rupture and a conversation on the timeline between past and present.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Redefining the Crown
DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Bibliophile and the Library: Private-Press Books from the Collection of Bill Heidrich
DESCRIPTION:View beautifully illustrated books that stand as remarkable testaments to the work of twentieth-century small private presses\, which\, in contrast to the trend of mass commercialization\, produced limited editions that celebrated the uniqueness of manual craftsmanship. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“Rethinking the New Hollywood: Insights from the Altman Archive”
DESCRIPTION:This presentation considers how the artifacts from the Altman Archive complicate the accepted vision of Robert Altman as a New Hollywood auteur. The analysis of archival findings helps us understand the process behind this visionary and subversive American director.\n\nJustin Wyatt is Chair of Communication Studies at the University of Rhode Island. At URI\, he teaches regularly in Communication Studies\, Film/Media\, and Journalism. He has published widely in the areas of media industry studies\, LGBTQ+ media\, the New Hollywood\, and the films of Robert Altman. His most recent book is a BFI Film Classic on Altman’s enigmatic 3 Women (2024). His book Creating the Viewer: Market Research and the Evolving Media Ecosystem (2024) considers key market research methods for understanding audience members and the ways that these protocols have been challenged by the digital environment. Wyatt has over 15 years of professional experience understanding consumer and viewer behaviors through media market research. He has co-edited the anthologies Screening American Independent Film (2023) and Refocus: The Later Films and Legacy of Robert Altman (2021). He is completing a manuscript about Nashville for the University of Michigan Press “Out of the Archives” book series\, scheduled for publication in early 2026.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Saptarshi Chakraborty\, Ph.D. Candidate\, Department of Statistics\, University of California\, Berkeley
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The advent of deep learning has completely revolutionized how we perceive data to obtain super-human performance across all fields of modern science. However\, despite the remarkable empirical successes of deep learners\, the theoretical guarantees for their statistical accuracy remain rather pessimistic. In particular\, the data distributions on which deep learners are generally applied\, such as natural images\, are often hypothesized to have an intrinsic low-dimensional structure in a typically high-dimensional feature space. However\, this is often not reflected in the derived rates in the state-of-the-art analyses. This talk aims to bridge the gap between the theory and practice of deep learning from a statistical perspective. We demonstrate that deep learners exhibit a convergence rate determined solely by the intrinsic dimensionality of the data\, rather than its nominal high-dimensional feature representation. Our work not only provides practical guidelines for selecting suitable network architectures but also connects the theoretical analyses of these models to established convergence rates in optimal transport and non-parametric statistics literature. In particular\, we derive the sharpest convergence rates for various learning scenarios\, including Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs)\, Wasserstein Autoencoders (WAEs)\, federated learning\, Bi-directional GANs\, and general deep supervised learners. Furthermore\, we introduce a novel measure\, called the entropic dimension\, to characterize the intrinsic dimension of probability measures and achieve the sharpest known approximation results for neural networks employing Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) activation\, improving upon classical benchmarks.\n\nBio: Saptarshi Chakraborty is a fifth-year Ph.D. student in Statistics at the University of California\, Berkeley\, advised by Prof. Peter Bartlett. Prior to joining Berkeley\, he earned his M.Stat and B. Stat (Hons.) degrees in Statistics from the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI)\, Kolkata\, India. He is primarily interested in the theoretical and methodological foundations of machine learning\, especially\, deep learning theory\, unsupervised learning\, dimensionality reduction\, optimal transport\, and optimization.\n\nhttps://saptarshic27.github.io/

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:The 14th Annual CSAS Pakistan Conference | Seeing Pakistan
DESCRIPTION:The 14th annual conference on Pakistan at the Center for South Asian Studies at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, brings our focus on Pakistani culture as it interacts with the processes of seeing and being seen. How do countries\, peoples\, and cultures come to be seen in a global framework? How might the shared qualities of sight and vision unite experiences as disparate as the art museum\, the social media site\, and the movie theater?\n\nWe kick off our conference with a screening of the 2023 film Wakhri\, directed by Iram Parveen Bilal\, at 7pm on Thursday\, January 30th at the Michigan Theater. Wakhri dramatizes the extraordinary life and tragic death of Qandeel Baloch (1990-2016)\, who is often described as Pakistan’s first social media celebrity.\n\nOn Friday\, January 31st\, we will begin with a keynote address from the film’s director\, Iram Parveen Bilal. A Pakistani writer\, director\, and producer based in Los Angeles\, Bilal will speak to us about the process of making the film\, what it means to be a Pakistani-American filmmaker today\, and how her own use of the cinematic medium reflects upon Qandeel Baloch’s use of the visually oriented world of social media. What parts of Wakhri the film\, and of Baloch the historical figure\, are particularly Pakistani\, and what parts might we more correctly see as indicative of a shared global predicament as moving image media and social media respond to one another?\n\nOur conversation about seeing and being seen continues with a second keynote address by Saleema Waraich\, an associate professor of Art History at Skidmore College. Waraich explores these issues through notions of invisibility and visibility\, as elicited by the oppressive and unrelenting smog that blanketed Lahore for two weeks\, briefly earning Lahore the title of the most polluted city in the world. One of the many hazardous conditions created by the smog was severely limited visibility\, and in this talk\, Waraich connects these precarious environmental conditions to a long-standing enthusiasm for “development” that relies on an inability to critically engage with and resist discourses of “progress”and “growth” that pollute both people’s minds and the environment. \n\nThis paper further queries how practices related to visibility that are associated with “development” manifest in recent restoration efforts involving Lahore's Mughal heritage. Waraich interrogates the image of Lahore’s Mughal heritage for the tourist industry as promoted by the Walled City Authority of Lahore (WCAL) and the ways in which these sites are being used by local populations to represent themselves\, in part through the selfie and TikTok cultures that drive many younger audiences to visit these sites. Asking what is being made visible (and consumable) through these forms of self-representation\, what drives these systems of representation\, and to what ends\, this paper explores the relationship between (not) seeing and being seen and probes the spaces in between.\n\nPakistan Conference Schedule\n\n10:00 to 10:30 AM Welcome\, breakfast\, opening remarks\n\n10:30 AM to Noon Iram Parveen Bilal\, filmmaker\, Wakhri\n\nNoon to 1:00 PM Lunch\n\n1:00 to 2:30 PM Saleema Waraich\, Skidmore College\n\n2.30 to 3:00P PM Closing discussion\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at csas@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Impossible Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Impossible Conversations is an exhibition and film installation by artists and filmmakers\, Pratāp Rughani and David Chung. The film centers a seemingly impossible dialogue between Arno Michaelis\, a former Neo-Nazi gang founder and Pardeep Kaleka\, son of the Sikh Temple President\, Satwant Singh Kaleka\, one of seven people killed in the shooting attack at the Oak Creek Sikh Temple (Gurudwara) by a white supremacist in 2012. \n \nThe film installation explores what happens when – for over a decade – Pardeep and Arno committed to a path of restorative communication - to listen deeply and connect with what motivates each other in the genesis and aftermath of atrocity.\nHow does healing begin? From the toxic polarization\, division and extreme racist violence that resulted in one of the worst mass shootings at a religious site in American history\, Pardeep insists that complete healing must eventually be a collective process for all\, to liberate both sides.\nAt Stamps Gallery\, Impossible Conversations will be accompanied by a dialogue and research room as well as photomurals that expand on the themes of restorative justice\, gun violence\, and how to sustain difficult dialogues to combat extremism and toxic polarization. \nExhibition curated by Srimoyee Mitra. Impossible Conversations has been supported in part by the Arts Research: Incubation &amp\; Acceleration (ARIA) program of The University of Michigan Office of the Vice President Research and the Arts Initiative\, Institute of Firearm Prevention Pilot Grant\, the Stamps School of Art and Design\, and the University of the Arts London. \nExhibition Programs\nAn Opening Screening\, Talkback\, and Reception will take place on Friday\, January 17\, 2025 from 5:30 – 8 p.m.\, and a Symposium will take place on Saturday\, January 18\, 2025 from 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. \nAbout the Artists\nPratāp Rughani is a writer and non-fiction filmmaker. His work develops documentary practice to enable people of radically different perspectives come into relation\, sometimes in the aftermath of violence and atrocity for example in South Africa\, Aboriginal Australia\, Europe\, Rwanda and the USA. Configuring a pro-filmic space to enable shared “witnessing” and the path towards restorative justice is a driving force in “Impossible Conversations” evolving through his practice in over thirty documentary films and exhibitions for BBC TV\, Channel 4\, Modern Art Oxford\, galleries and activist groups. The ethics of giving sustained attention to the experiences of marginalized\, excluded or sometimes reviled “others” and bringing them in relationship to the broader culture is central to his research into ethics of storytelling and the development of “Restorative Narrative.”\nRughani writes widely on the ethics of creative practice\, serves on several editorial Boards\, has won awards for film\, teaching\, and research\, and is Professor of Documentary Practices at the University of the Arts\, London.\nDavid Chung is an acclaimed visual artist and filmmaker. His work focuses on how identities are shaped in immigrant communities and the challenges of refugees as they integrate into new homelands.\nChung has exhibited his drawings\, prints\, and video installations at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts\, the Asia Society\, the Walker Arts Center\, the Studio Museum in Harlem\, the Gwangju Biennale\, the Smithsonian Institution\, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Chung has received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and the National Board Film Board of Canada's Award for Best Documentary Film. He was the 2013 Kim Koo Visiting Professor at Harvard University. \nChung is a professor and the director of the MFA Graduate Program at the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Stampede
DESCRIPTION:Born from their passion for the arts\, The Stampede is a student-led organization building a new space for artists. In September 2023\, four undergraduates united with a simple mission: to create a space for showcasing exciting new art work. They established a foundation and worked to build a buzz through outreach and excitement. The Stampede first hosted a pop-up exhibition (party) at a friend's house\, exhibiting 53 pieces of original work\, with food\, drink\, and music\, and a smashing turnout from the local community. They have since evolved\, developed an infrastructure\, and grown into a platform for dynamic art work.\nToday\, The Stampede curates and facilitates exhibitions and events that bring together artists\, writers\, and musicians. From pop-ups and art markets to concerts and gallery shows\, they provide a vibrant platform for creativity for the community. The organization has broken new ground on multiple accounts to pave new ways for artists today and tomorrow\; bridging the divide between student and school. Functioning as an artist collective\, The Stampede focus on creating large-scale artworks\, promotional materials\, and merchandise for their events.\nThis exhibition offers a glimpse behind the scenes of The Stampede: its origins\, current endeavors\, and future aspirations. Since its inception\, The Stampede has continuously surprised with its growth and transformation. Committed to providing opportunities for artists\, they will keep hosting events for their community and friends.\nJoin The Stampede in their journey\; they invite you to... RUN WITH US!

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Above the Falls: The Story of the Peoples of the Upper Willamette Valley in Oregon Amid the Absence of Abundant Salmon Runs
DESCRIPTION:Salmon fishing was a major activity for people living along the Lower Colombia River in Oregon. But the Willamette Valley in Oregon has a major barrier to salmon runs: Willamette Falls. Above this barrier\, indigenous communities in the Upper Willamette Valley developed different responses to fewer and more limited salmon runs. The most significant of these was the use and intensification of camas (Camassia quamash). The story of this plant\, and the earth ovens constructed to process them\, tells us many interesting things about the societies that lived in this valley and how they were similar and different to their nearby neighbors who did have access to abundant and predictable salmon runs.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:FSML Seminar: When big neural networks are not enough: physics\, multifidelity and kernels
DESCRIPTION:To join via Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/97823527756?pwd=H01BbvtuG5q02Wzb8LJvhUnvijlAIe.1\n\nAbstract: Modern machine learning has shown remarkable promise in multiple applications. However\, brute force use of neural networks\, even when they have huge numbers of trainable parameters\, can fail to provide highly accurate predictions for problems in the physical sciences. We present a collection of ideas about how enforcing physics\, exploiting multifidelity knowledge and the kernel representation of neural networks can lead to significant increase in efficiency and/or accuracy. Various examples are used to illustrate the ideas.\n\nBio: Panos Stinis specializes in scientific computing with application interests in model reduction of complex systems\, multiscale modeling\, uncertainty quantification\, and machine learning. He studied aeronautical engineering at the Technical University of Athens\, Greece. He earned his PhD in applied mathematics in 2003\, from Columbia University in New York and began his career as a postdoctoral fellow at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Stanford Center for Turbulence Research. In 2008\, he became a faculty member at the Mathematics Department at the University of Minnesota. He moved to the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in 2014\, where he is currently leading the Computational Mathematics group.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:More than Gray: Reimagining Early America in Full Color
DESCRIPTION:The American past was lived in full color\, but this vibrant history can be easily missed in surviving evidence. You can’t deny that there’s something about a black-and-white photograph that feels… stuffy. With portraits showing people with their shirts buttoned right to the neck and everything in shades of gray and brown\, our imaginations can incline to thinking of the past as a bit staid\, if not downright dull. But look a little closer\, and you’ll see signs that the fashion choices available to those who came before us were more colorful than you might first think. From the fabrics they wore\, to the games they played\, or the books they read\, their world was alive with bright hues. This exhibit invites you to reimagine history with a fuller color palette and picture the vibrancy and joy that just might be hidden behind the unsmiling photographs.\n\nExhibition opening weekdays from 12-4.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Uncovering the molecular interactions underlying MBD protein Liquid-liquid Phase Separation
DESCRIPTION:Chromatin organization controls DNA’s accessibility to regulatory factors to influence gene expression. Heterochromatin\, or transcriptionally silent chromatin enriched in methylated DNA and methylated histone tails\, self-assembles through multivalent interactions with its associated proteins into a condensed\, but dynamic state. Liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) of key heterochromatin regulators\, such as heterochromatin protein 1 (HP1)\, plays an essential role in heterochromatin assembly and function. Methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MeCP2)\, the most studied member of the methyl-CpG-binding domain (MBD) family of proteins\, has been recently shown to undergo LLPS in the absence and presence of methylated DNA. These studies provide a new mechanistic framework for understanding the role of methylated DNA and its readers in heterochromatin formation. However\, the details of the molecular interactions by which other MBD family members undergo LLPS to mediate genome organization and transcriptional regulation are not fully understood. Here\, we focus on two MBD proteins\, MBD2 and MBD3\, that have distinct but interdependent roles in gene regulation. Using an integrated computational and experimental approach\, we uncover the homotypic and heterotypic interactions governing MBD2 and MBD3 phase separation and DNA’s influence on this process. We show that despite sharing the highest sequence identity and structural homology among all the MBD protein family members\, MBD2 and MBD3 exhibit differing residue patterns resulting in distinct phase separation mechanisms. Understanding the molecular underpinnings of MBD protein condensation offers insights into the higher-order\, LLPS-mediated organization of heterochromatin.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:When Do Nice Guys Finish Last? Prosociality and the Psychological Model of CEO-Firm Matching
DESCRIPTION:Prosocial CEOs increase employee motivation but incur higher costs when implementing layoffs. We present a psychological model of CEO-firm matching wherein negative industry shocks requiring downsizing asymmetrically degrade the match quality for prosocial CEOs. We find that\, during periods of increasing Chinese import competition\, prosocial CEOs show higher rates of both forced and unforced turnover. They are succeeded by less prosocial CEOs who are less likely to be charity volunteers\, externally recruited\, use less employee-friendly language\, or lean Republican in political orientation. We find no effects on CEO functional background\, indicating that boards specifically recruit low-prosocial CEOs. Our study highlights psychological characteristics as a key consideration in the executive labor market and provides a theoretical basis for anecdotal accounts of wartime and peacetime CEOs.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:(Categorical) noncommutative algebraic geometry
DESCRIPTION:The phrase “noncommutative geometry” is\, unfortunately\, fairly overloaded. Here I will present one notion of noncommutative algebraic geometry\, where we view (triangulated) categories as geometric objects in their own right. These arise most frequently as categories of sheaves of modules on ordinary varieties\, but I will mention some examples that appear in the wild which are not of this type.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Sociocultural Anthropology Colloquium | “Running Wild: Psychiatry\, Citizenship\, and Horizons of Escape in/from the Republic of Cameroon”
DESCRIPTION:“In this talk\, I tell two stories. One concerns a young man who refuses treatment at a public psychiatric hospital in the Republic of Cameroon\, preferring instead to run away from clinic and home. The other story follows resonances between public psychiatry and the ‘Anglophone Crisis\,’ an armed conflict between the Republic and secessionist factions in Northwest and Southwest Cameroon. I show how public psychiatry aims to teach patients to be mobile in ways and on timeframes deemed not only socially correct but mentally healthful--to produce what I call the political figure of the ‘patient citizen.’ This figure accepts both the temporal responsibility for staying within the everyday as a timeframe of healthy living and state intervention\; and citizenship itself as a chronic condition in this period of unprecedented threat to state legitimacy and national integrity. To follow the ostensibly subversive mobility of the runaway\, as embodied by this young man\, is thus to ask how notions of health and citizenship may come to critique--to move against--the clinic and the state. The act of running away\, I argue\, makes visible how the state may fail to move in ways and on timeframes valued by patients\, and gestures to the radical possibility that escape may be healthful.”\n\nElizabeth Durham is a Junior Fellow in the Society of Fellows at the University of Michigan. She received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from Princeton University. Her most recent writing appears or is forthcoming in Anthropological Quarterly\, Social Science & Medicine - Mental Health\, and Medical Anthropology Quarterly.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GEOMETRY SEMINAR: Minimal submanifolds\, higher expanders\, and waists of locally symmetric spaces
DESCRIPTION:Gromov initiated a program to prove statements of the following form: Suppose we are given two simplicial complexes X and Y\, where X is “complicated” and Y is lower dimensional. Then any map f: X-> Y must have at least one \"complicated” fiber. In this talk I will describe various results of this kind for compact locally symmetric spaces\, that are proved by bringing new tools into the picture from minimal surface theory and representation theory. Much of the talk will be focused on octonionic hyperbolic manifolds\, the case where our approach seems to work best. If time permits I will also discuss some applications to systolic geometry\, global fixed point theorems for actions of higher rank lattices on contractible CAT(0) simplicial complexes\, and/or a connection to recent work by Connell-McReynolds-Wang involving homology vanishing theorems for infinite covolume discrete subgroups of SL(n\,R). Based on joint work with Mikolaj Fraczyk. \n\nIn the first talk I will focus on giving background on Gromov's program for proving waist inequalities\, and the necessary ingredients from representation theory and the theory of minimal submanifolds. The second talk will not assume that you went to the first talk.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Plundered: How Racist Policies Undermine Black Homeownership in America
DESCRIPTION:When Professor Bernadette Atuahene\, of USC Gould School of Law\, moved to Detroit\, she planned to study the city’s squatting phenomenon. What she accidentally found was too urgent to ignore. Her neighbors\, many of whom had owned their homes for decades\, were losing them to property tax foreclosure\, leaving once bustling Black neighborhoods blighted with vacant homes.\n\nThrough years of dogged investigation and research\, Atuahene uncovered a system of predatory governance\, where public officials raise public dollars through laws and processes that produce or sustain racial inequity — a nationwide practice in no way limited to Detroit.\n\nIn this powerful work of scholarship and storytelling\, Atuahene shows how predatory governance invites complicity from well-meaning people\, eviscerates communities\, and widens the racial wealth gap. By following the lives of two Detroit grandfathers\, one Black and the other white\, and their grandchildren\, Atuahene tells a riveting tale about racist policies\, how they take root\, why they flourish\, and who profits. Plundered's release date is Jan. 28\, 2025.\n\nLocal book talks include: \nANN ARBOR on Friday\, April 4\n6:30-8 p.m. at Literati Bookstore\, 124 E.
