White", "event_type":"Exhibition", "event_type_id":"7", "description":"The Red Summer portfolio represents the stories of various locations in the American landscape where racial violence (often characterized as \u201cRace Wars\u201d at the time) erupted between 1917 and 1923. These years of conflict reveal several aspects of racial anxiety that inform our contemporary experience, including, though not limited to; racism, fear of violent black revolt, lynching, poverty, mass incarceration, and competition for employment. The term \u201cRed Summer\u201d was first used by James Weldon Johnson to describe the violent attacks against black communities during 1919. \r\n\r\nThough the events of the early twentieth century seem to be remote and fading apparitions of an American past; my work is concerned with the power and influence of our shared historical narrative upon the present. The upheaval of Red Summer occurred approximately fifty years after the American Civil War, fifty years before the height of the Civil Rights Era, and three centuries after the first enslaved Africans arrived in English colonies that would become the United States. \r\n\r\nThe project combines photographs of the contemporary landscape made at or near the site of racial conflict with fragmented selections of contemporaneous newspaper reporting (1917-1923). In many cases, the newsprint images include the surrounding stories or advertisements. Dr. King signaled a critique of (purported) allyship. In the present, political movements on the left are forced to contend with similar questions. Does a problematic ally count as an ally at all? With so much at stake in the present, what, if anything, is worth sacrificing to solidarity? Cutting across decades of art history, this talk examines a series of moments in which the question of problematic allyship has arisen for Black artists and image makers and for scholars who think and write about them (including myself). The particular tools of art history may come into play insofar as this problem intersects with issues of performance, affect, and visibility. But in an age of surveillance and repression, should visibility have limits\u2014and if so, what might these questions teach us about how to do art history?\r\n\r\nRebecca Zorach teaches in the Department of Art History at Northwestern University, with affiliations in programs in American Studies and Environmental Policy and Culture. This research shows how surgeons generate and apply knowledge using racial categories and how this process is affected by transnational clinical and economic exchange. The talk draws on fieldwork conducted in the U.S. and Malaysia to show how surgeons act as gatekeepers to and producers of ideal, racially legible appearances. Surgeons not only measure and organize but also elaborate upon racial differences in a globalized field of medicine. Not only does it have no equivalent in the authoritative accounts of the Prometheus myth transmitted in Hesiod\u2019s Theogony and Works and Days, but the attribution of so many arts to a single divinity breaks away from the division of divine prerogatives that underlies Athenian polytheism. In this talk, Ms. Hopman will show how PV both celebrates and acknowledges the theological provocation raised by Prometheus, thus negotiating for its audience the challenge raised by the ascendant popularity of the trickster god in fifth-century Athens.\r\n\r\nMarianne Hopman (Ph.D. Harvard University and Paris Sorbonne) is a scholar of ancient Greek culture with an expertise in archaic and classical poetry and special interests in literary theory, feminist studies, animal studies, posthumanism, and the environmental humanities. She is the author of Scylla: Myth, Metaphor, Paradox (Cambridge University Press, 2012), the co-editor of Choral Mediations in Greek Tragedy (Cambridge University Press, 2013), and the author of articles on Homer, Athenian tragedy, and Greek hymns. Her current book project, entitled Prometheus\u2019 Gifts: Environment and Technology in Fifth-Century Athens, draws on the fields of Classics and the environmental humanities to offer a contemporary reading of the fifth-century BCE tragedy Prometheus Bound as an attempt to come to grips with the question of how humans and their inventions fit into the world.\r\n\r\nHopman served as director of the French Interdisciplinary Group from 2012 to 2017 and chaired the Classics Department at Northwestern University from 2018 to 2022.
