SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andy Ross Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The pieces here are from a large series of works made over the last several years. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. He received a BFA degree from College for Creative Studies\, and an MFA degree from University of Michigan. He has taught photography\, art\, and web design at colleges in California and Michigan. His photographs and collages have been exhibited in schools\, galleries\, and museums across the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Chimera
DESCRIPTION:*Chimera* is an immersive exhibition centered on a newly commissioned film\, also titled *Chimera*\, which fuses elements from Newsome's prior works *Hands Performance* and *Build or Destroy* with a new interquel film that bridges their narratives. This connecting piece explores the origins and journey of the bejeweled figure in flames from *Build or Destroy*\, revealing where they come from and the purpose that led them to Earth. This exhibition reflects a bold shift in Newsome's practice toward sci-fi filmmaking\, layering the architecture of film\, movement\, and world-building to probe themes of identity\, resistance\, and creation. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Elizabeth Boyd-Hartmann Dizik Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This body of work represents a playful exploration of form\, color\, and scale through the lens of cellular shapes. Inspired by the complex patterns of biological life\, the pieces are a celebration of growth\, transformation\, and the joy of experimentation. The use of non-precious materials\, such as wood balls and paint\, allowed for a liberating approach to composition and color\, while the spherical forms and circular panels evoke the look of petri dishes—symbolizing both scientific curiosity and organic development.\nBorn in Detroit\, Elizabeth is a multidisciplinary artist and mother based in the metro Detroit area\, where she works from a studio in her home. With a background in bench jewelry\, her earlier work focused on studio jewelry and was represented by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal.\nElizabeth’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. She holds a BA in Jewelry Design\, with First Class Honours\, from Central Saint Martins in London\, a BFA from the University of Michigan\, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, where she specialized in Metalsmithing and Architecture. Her diverse practice spans jewelry\, sculpture\, and installation\, blending materials and techniques to explore themes of production\, growth\, transformation\, and organic form.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:On the World With the World
DESCRIPTION:*On The World With The World* is an exhibition of 40 artworks by over 24 artists from the Progressive Art Studio Collective (PASC) program. PASC is the first progressive art studio and exhibition program in Detroit and Wayne County dedicated to supporting artists with developmental disabilities and mental health differences to advance artistic practices and build individual careers in the art and design fields.\n\nThis exhibition introduces the PASC program\, and the wide range of styles and ways of working that drive this community of artists\, to the Ann Arbor community. The exhibition is hung salon style\, referencing the communal character of the Osterman Common Room as a social gathering space. It intends to bring engaged people together for conversation on art\, disabilities\, and questions of access in the art world.\n\nPASC embraces the philosophy that creating an artwork is an expressive and communal act whereby an individual communicates their unique perspective on the world with the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Red Summer: Racial Violence in the American Landscape\, 1917-1923
DESCRIPTION:The Red Summer portfolio represents the stories of various locations in the American landscape where racial violence (often characterized as “Race Wars” at the time) erupted between 1917 and 1923. These years of conflict reveal several aspects of racial anxiety that inform our contemporary experience\, including\, though not limited to\; racism\, fear of violent black revolt\, lynching\, poverty\, mass incarceration\, and competition for employment. The term “Red Summer” was first used by James Weldon Johnson to describe the violent attacks against black communities during 1919. \n\nThough the events of the early twentieth century seem to be remote and fading apparitions of an American past\; my work is concerned with the power and influence of our shared historical narrative upon the present. The upheaval of Red Summer occurred approximately fifty years after the American Civil War\, fifty years before the height of the Civil Rights Era\, and three centuries after the first enslaved Africans arrived in English colonies that would become the United States. \n\nThe project combines photographs of the contemporary landscape made at or near the site of racial conflict with fragmented selections of contemporaneous newspaper reporting (1917-1923). In many cases\, the newsprint images include the surrounding stories or advertisements. The combination of the landscape photograph and the reproduction of newspaper fragments (which invade the contemporary with a narrative from the past)\, is a rupture and a conversation on the timeline between past and present.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Redefining the Crown
DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Bibliophile and the Library: Private-Press Books from the Collection of Bill Heidrich
DESCRIPTION:View beautifully illustrated books that stand as remarkable testaments to the work of twentieth-century small private presses\, which\, in contrast to the trend of mass commercialization\, produced limited editions that celebrated the uniqueness of manual craftsmanship. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Other:Leaves Under the Lens
DESCRIPTION:The leaf surface is a dynamic landscape where tiny\, specialized structures help plants interact with the world around them. Let’s bring this world into view! Join us for an exhibit that highlights the complex and often beautiful anatomy of leaves from the Matthaei collection. Plants throughout the conservatory will be paired with microscope photographs and micro-CT scans that illustrate the otherwise invisible structures that protect leaves from chewing insects\, absorb (or repel!) water\, and even recruit “bodyguards”. You won’t look at leaves the same way again! \n\nThis project is a collaboration between MBGNA and the Weber and Vasconcelos labs in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\, led by PhD student Rosemary Glos.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Individualizing Climate Risk: Credit Score Penalties in the Home Insurance Market
DESCRIPTION:The climate crisis represents an unprecedented challenge for societal risk management\, and the American home insurance market has come under intense scrutiny as the consequences of climate change have worsened. While other insurance markets rely heavily on proxies of individual risk to set prices\, it is assumed that proxies of asset risk (e.g.\, construction quality) and environmental risk (e.g.\, flooding\, fire) dominate the risk-based pricing of home insurers. However\, as risk estimation and management have become increasingly individualized across the insurance industry broadly\, contemporary home insurers collect a vast amount of individual-level data from prospective buyers and use these variables in setting prices\, despite their tenuous connection to the underlying risk of insured events such as wildfires or hurricanes. In this study\, I use standardized industry data on home insurance quotes from 2021-2024 generated using 157 inputs about prospective buyers\, including policy details and home characteristics\, where all inputs are held constant except credit score and zip code. I find that the marginal effects of credit scores on prices are substantively large compared to the marginal effects of zip codes. A low credit individual living in a zip code at the 25th zip code risk percentile is quoted at the same price as a high credit individual living in a zip code at the 80th risk percentile. These findings have important equity implications\, as the most marginalized Americans have been filtered to the frontline of climate-related disasters in many regions of the country and now also bear a disproportionate financial burden in the redistribution of anticipated losses through private home insurance.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Tuesday Seminar Series - Bats\, Rats\, and Immune Chats: How Introgression Shapes Parasite Susceptibility
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our ongoing Tuesday Lunch Seminar Series.\n\nHybridization plays a complex role in nature\, driving adaptation and biodiversity by introducing genetic variation. In some cases\, it can enhance immune responses through hybrid vigor\, providing hybrids with advantages in combating infections. My research investigates the connections between hybridization\, immunogenetic diversity\, and parasite susceptibility in small mammals\, focusing on Myotis bats and Rattus rats—key reservoirs of diverse parasites. Specifically\, I will examine how ancestral hybridization influences RNA virus tolerance in Myotis bats and explore endoparasite resistance in hybrid populations of Rattus rattus and Rattus tanezumi. Beyond the scientific goals\, I am committed to increasing accessibility and inclusivity in science. Using insights from this research\, I am developing portable science escape rooms to engage students from third grade to high school in learning about ecology\, evolutionary biology\, and bat conservation. These escape rooms will be implemented in Michigan and Belize to spark curiosity and inspire underrepresented students to pursue careers in STEM fields.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Studying China in the Absence of Access: Relearning a Lost Art
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/Jw7A7\n\nAs our access to Chinese data sources becomes increasingly constrained\, many China scholars outside China have been scrambling to find new and innovative ways to mitigate these trends. One promising avenue is dusting off the tools Sinologists utilized from the 1960s through the 1970s\, when it was impossible to contemplate the access that many of us have been able to take for granted\, but which allowed these scholars to get so many things about China right. What are these skills—the analytical tools and the strategies to deploy them—and how might we be able to adapt them to the current research climate (and the foreseeable future)? This is the subject of the SAIS China Research Center’s first publication\, featuring four eminent Pekingologists – Joe Fewsmith\, Tom Fingar\, Alice Miller\, and Fred Tiewes. Access here: https://scgrc.sais.jhu.edu/publications/\n \n Andrew Mertha is the George and Sadie Hyman Professor of China Studies\, Director of the China Studies Program\, and Director of the SAIS China Research Center at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). From 2019 to 2021\, Mertha served as the Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs and International Research Cooperation at SAIS. He has held positions as formerly a professor of Government at Cornell University (2008-2018) and an assistant professor of Political Science at Washington University in St. Louis (2001-2008). And a Michigan PhD! Mertha specializes in Chinese bureaucratic politics\, political institutions\, and the domestic and foreign policy process. Since 2009\, he has extended his research interests to include Cambodia. He has articles appearing in The China Quarterly\, Comparative Politics\, International Organization\, Issues & Studies\, CrossCurrents\, and Orbis. His fourth monograph is forthcoming in May from Cornell University Press – Bad Lieutenants: The Khmer Rouge\, United Front\, and Class Struggle\, 1970–1997.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at chinese.studies@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:More than Gray: Reimagining Early America in Full Color
DESCRIPTION:The American past was lived in full color\, but this vibrant history can be easily missed in surviving evidence. You can’t deny that there’s something about a black-and-white photograph that feels… stuffy. With portraits showing people with their shirts buttoned right to the neck and everything in shades of gray and brown\, our imaginations can incline to thinking of the past as a bit staid\, if not downright dull. But look a little closer\, and you’ll see signs that the fashion choices available to those who came before us were more colorful than you might first think. From the fabrics they wore\, to the games they played\, or the books they read\, their world was alive with bright hues. This exhibit invites you to reimagine history with a fuller color palette and picture the vibrancy and joy that just might be hidden behind the unsmiling photographs.\n\nExhibition opening weekdays from 12-4.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CAS Lecture. Diluted Wine\, Disguised Belief: Catholic Ethnography of the Armenian Rite in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth
DESCRIPTION:Bogdan Pavlish\, 2024-2025 Manoogian Postdoctoral Fellow in Armenian History\, University of Michigan\n\n Lecture Abstract: When in the mid-1660s two Catholic missionaries arrived in Poland-Lithuania to bring local Armenians into union with Rome\, they faced an unexpected challenge. Armenian clergy and laypeople were ready to accept all but one of the Catholic conditions of unification\, namely the use of diluted wine in the Eucharistic ritual. Perplexed but resolved to prove them wrong\, the missionaries began to debate this arcane issue of Christian practice and theology using all available means\, including political intrigues\, historical arguments\, and ethnographic observations. This talk focuses on a missionary expedition to Armenians of Kamianets-Podilskyi at the Polish-Ottoman border in 1666 which started with a heated dispute over the Eucharist and resulted in a detailed ethnographic account of local religious life. It revealed deep-seated differences between Catholics and Armenians which went back to late antiquity but assumed a particularly distinct shape in post-Reformation Eastern Europe. Rooted in the local context and history of long-lasting contacts between different Christian confessions\, the encounter in Kamianets-Podilskyi reflected wider patterns of cross-cultural interactions in the early modern world.\n \n Speaker Bio: Bogdan Pavlish is a historian of early modern Eastern Europe whose research focuses on the Armenians of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He is currently the 2024-25 Manoogian Postdoctoral Fellow in Armenian History at the University of Michigan after having earned his PhD in history from Northwestern University in 2024. His dissertation\, entitled ‘Nothing Exotic but Ourselves: Cross-Cultural Encounters in the Armenian Diaspora of Poland-Lithuania in the Seventeenth Century\,’ examines the role of the Armenian communities of Lviv and other towns of present-day Ukraine in cultural\, commercial\, and diplomatic exchanges between Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Bogdan is currently working on his first book project\, which explores themes of distance\, difference\, and translation at the intersection of the early Armenian diaspora\, Catholic missionization\, and multicultural societies of Eastern Europe in the seventeenth century. His research draws on primary sources in several languages from archives and libraries in Ukraine\, Poland\, the Vatican\, and Armenia. His writings have appeared in the Journal of Early Modern History and Ab Imperio.\n\nRegister at https://umich.zoom.us/j/91400542424

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Scanning time-resolved optical studies on Kagome superconductors
DESCRIPTION:The kagome lattice provides a fascinating playground to study geometrical frustration\, topology and strong correlations. The newly discovered kagome metals AV_3Sb_5 (A = K\, Rb\, Cs) exhibit exotic phases including charge density waves (CDWs) and superconductivity. In our study\, we perform scanning birefringence and circular dichroism (CD) microscopy on CsV_3Sb_5. The scanning birefrigence demonsate six-fold rotational symmetry breaking in the CDW phase and three domains that are 120 degree to each other. The emergence of opposite CD domains within the same birefringence domain\, along with field-induced CD switching\, indicate broken time-reversal symmetry. Furthermore\, ultrafast pump-probe reflectivity measurements reveal a splitting of charge density wave induced phonon modes in all three birefringence domains. Such a breaking in degeneracy corroborates the six-fold rotation symmetry breaking in the charge ordered phase. I will also discuss the CDW fluctuations from the pump-probe measurement.\n\nReferences\n\n[1] Y. Xu\, Z. Ni\, Y. Liu\, B. Ortiz\, Q. Deng\, S. Wilson\, B. Yan\, L. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Probing Electrochemical Reactivity Under Nanoconfinement in Layered Electrode Materials
DESCRIPTION:Electrochemical processes are vital for global decarbonization efforts because they are central to many energy-efficient storage and conversion technologies and can also be leveraged for large scale chemical manufacturing. In the context of these energy applications\, it is necessary to understand factors that control the kinetics and selectivity of electrochemical reactions. At the electrode level\, many factors\, including the chemical composition\, atomic or molecular structure\, surface area\, and morphology\, have been leveraged to direct electrochemical reactions. An emerging strategy is to geometrically confine the electrochemical reaction within a porous electrode material. This places a physical boundary around the electrochemical reaction and thus defines the reaction microenvironment\, while also spatially restricting the reactants and products. Experimental studies of nanoconfinement effects on electrochemical reactions require electrochemical interfaces with well-defined environments. In this presentation\, I will discuss our materials chemistry approach to define the confined electrochemical environment within molecularly pillared transition metal oxides\, and our study of electrochemical reactions taking place within these electrodes using in situ and operando electrochemical methods.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Charles Margossian\, Postdoctoral Research Fellow\, Computational Mathematics\, Flatiron Institute
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Probabilistic models describe complex data generating processes and have been applied to a broad range of fields\, such as epidemiology\, pharmacology\, and astrophysics. Inference for probabilistic models poses significant computational challenges\, particularly as models grow in complexity and datasets increase in size. Modern hardware\, with its parallelization capabilities\, offers new opportunities to accelerate statistical inference. However\, many traditional methods are not inherently designed for parallel computation. Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC)\, for instance\, typically relies on a few long-running chains. I propose an alternative approach: running hundreds or thousands of shorter chains in parallel. To support this paradigm\, I introduce the nested “R-hat\,” a novel convergence diagnostic tailored for the many-short-chains regime\, paving the way for faster and more automated MCMC. \n\nNext I examine variational inference (VI). VI already leverages the parallelization capacities of modern hardware\, however it lacks the theoretical guarantees of MCMC and other statistical methods. I present two key theoretical results: (1) a positive result demonstrating that VI can effectively learn symmetries even under misspecified approximations\, and (2) a negative result revealing that factorized (or mean-field) approximations lead to an impossibility theorem\, preventing the simultaneous estimation of multiple measures of uncertainty . These findings provide practical guidance for selecting VI’s objective function and approximation family\, offering a path toward robust and scalable inference.\n\nhttps://charlesm93.github.io/
