SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andy Ross Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The pieces here are from a large series of works made over the last several years. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. He received a BFA degree from College for Creative Studies\, and an MFA degree from University of Michigan. He has taught photography\, art\, and web design at colleges in California and Michigan. His photographs and collages have been exhibited in schools\, galleries\, and museums across the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Chimera
DESCRIPTION:*Chimera* is an immersive exhibition centered on a newly commissioned film\, also titled *Chimera*\, which fuses elements from Newsome's prior works *Hands Performance* and *Build or Destroy* with a new interquel film that bridges their narratives. This connecting piece explores the origins and journey of the bejeweled figure in flames from *Build or Destroy*\, revealing where they come from and the purpose that led them to Earth. This exhibition reflects a bold shift in Newsome's practice toward sci-fi filmmaking\, layering the architecture of film\, movement\, and world-building to probe themes of identity\, resistance\, and creation. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Elizabeth Boyd-Hartmann Dizik Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This body of work represents a playful exploration of form\, color\, and scale through the lens of cellular shapes. Inspired by the complex patterns of biological life\, the pieces are a celebration of growth\, transformation\, and the joy of experimentation. The use of non-precious materials\, such as wood balls and paint\, allowed for a liberating approach to composition and color\, while the spherical forms and circular panels evoke the look of petri dishes—symbolizing both scientific curiosity and organic development.\nBorn in Detroit\, Elizabeth is a multidisciplinary artist and mother based in the metro Detroit area\, where she works from a studio in her home. With a background in bench jewelry\, her earlier work focused on studio jewelry and was represented by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal.\nElizabeth’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. She holds a BA in Jewelry Design\, with First Class Honours\, from Central Saint Martins in London\, a BFA from the University of Michigan\, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, where she specialized in Metalsmithing and Architecture. Her diverse practice spans jewelry\, sculpture\, and installation\, blending materials and techniques to explore themes of production\, growth\, transformation\, and organic form.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:On the World With the World
DESCRIPTION:*On The World With The World* is an exhibition of 40 artworks by over 24 artists from the Progressive Art Studio Collective (PASC) program. PASC is the first progressive art studio and exhibition program in Detroit and Wayne County dedicated to supporting artists with developmental disabilities and mental health differences to advance artistic practices and build individual careers in the art and design fields.\n\nThis exhibition introduces the PASC program\, and the wide range of styles and ways of working that drive this community of artists\, to the Ann Arbor community. The exhibition is hung salon style\, referencing the communal character of the Osterman Common Room as a social gathering space. It intends to bring engaged people together for conversation on art\, disabilities\, and questions of access in the art world.\n\nPASC embraces the philosophy that creating an artwork is an expressive and communal act whereby an individual communicates their unique perspective on the world with the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Red Summer: Racial Violence in the American Landscape\, 1917-1923
DESCRIPTION:The Red Summer portfolio represents the stories of various locations in the American landscape where racial violence (often characterized as “Race Wars” at the time) erupted between 1917 and 1923. These years of conflict reveal several aspects of racial anxiety that inform our contemporary experience\, including\, though not limited to\; racism\, fear of violent black revolt\, lynching\, poverty\, mass incarceration\, and competition for employment. The term “Red Summer” was first used by James Weldon Johnson to describe the violent attacks against black communities during 1919. \n\nThough the events of the early twentieth century seem to be remote and fading apparitions of an American past\; my work is concerned with the power and influence of our shared historical narrative upon the present. The upheaval of Red Summer occurred approximately fifty years after the American Civil War\, fifty years before the height of the Civil Rights Era\, and three centuries after the first enslaved Africans arrived in English colonies that would become the United States. \n\nThe project combines photographs of the contemporary landscape made at or near the site of racial conflict with fragmented selections of contemporaneous newspaper reporting (1917-1923). In many cases\, the newsprint images include the surrounding stories or advertisements. The combination of the landscape photograph and the reproduction of newspaper fragments (which invade the contemporary with a narrative from the past)\, is a rupture and a conversation on the timeline between past and present.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Redefining the Crown
DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Bibliophile and the Library: Private-Press Books from the Collection of Bill Heidrich
DESCRIPTION:View beautifully illustrated books that stand as remarkable testaments to the work of twentieth-century small private presses\, which\, in contrast to the trend of mass commercialization\, produced limited editions that celebrated the uniqueness of manual craftsmanship. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Other:Leaves Under the Lens
DESCRIPTION:The leaf surface is a dynamic landscape where tiny\, specialized structures help plants interact with the world around them. Let’s bring this world into view! Join us for an exhibit that highlights the complex and often beautiful anatomy of leaves from the Matthaei collection. Plants throughout the conservatory will be paired with microscope photographs and micro-CT scans that illustrate the otherwise invisible structures that protect leaves from chewing insects\, absorb (or repel!) water\, and even recruit “bodyguards”. You won’t look at leaves the same way again! \n\nThis project is a collaboration between MBGNA and the Weber and Vasconcelos labs in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\, led by PhD student Rosemary Glos.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Reese Pathak\, Ph.D. Candidate\, Department of Computer Science\, University of California\, Berkeley
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Traditional machine learning often assumes that training (source) data closely resembles the testing (target) data. However\, in many contemporary applications this is unrealistic: in e-commerce\, consumer behavior is time-varying\; in medicine\, patient populations can exhibit more or less heterogeneity\; in autonomous driving\, models are rolled out to new environments. Ignoring these “distribution shifts” can lead to costly\, harmful\, and even dangerous outcomes. My research tackles these challenges by developing an algorithmic and statistical toolkit for addressing distribution shifts.\n\nThis talk focuses on covariate shift\, a form of distribution shift where the source and target distributions have different covariate laws. In the first part of the talk\, I demonstrate that for a large class of problems\, transfer learning is possible\, even when the source and target data have non-overlapping support. We introduce the “defect” of a covariate shift\, which quantifies the severity of a distribution shift. We demonstrate how the defect can be leveraged algorithmically\, leading to methods with optimal learning guarantees.\n\nIn the second part of the talk\, we refine the notion of defect to provide even stronger learning guarantees. We introduce a new method: penalized risk minimization with a non-traditional choice of regularization which is chosen via semidefinite programming. We show that our method has performance which is optimal with respect to the particular covariate shift instance. To our knowledge\, these are the first instance-optimal guarantees for transfer learning. Moreover\, our results are assumption-light: we impose essentially no restrictions on the underlying covariate laws\, thereby broadening the applicability of our theory.\n\nBased on the papers: https://doi.org/10.1214/23-AOS2268 and https://doi.org/10.1214/24-AOS2446\n\nhttps://people.eecs.berkeley.edu/~pathakr/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Data & Research Methods Project Launch
DESCRIPTION:This project is perfect for beginners who have never workedwith a dataset before. This project will also be helpful for advanced data science students who have little experience working with data cleaning or survey building\, desk research\, or data visualizations.&nbsp\;The focus of this project is the research process as a whole. It is the first day of your new job as the Junior Data Scientist for the Office of the Mayor in the fictional town of Data Lake\, West Dakota. The population of Data Lake (314\,159) has grown rapidly since 2020 as a number of remote workers have relocated to the mid-size city. Mayor “Tess Ellation” has tasked your office with a project – to learn more about the specific needsof the town’s new remote work population. She asks you to review data on remote workers provided by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and come back to her with at least two data-driven policy recommendations which will support these new Data Lake families (for example\, a policy recommendation might be: build new coworking spaces downtown). Your policy recommendations must be informed by data analysis or Mayor Ellation will not adopt them.&nbsp\;Together\, we’ll clean a dataset\, learn about the ethics of data science research\, do some preliminary analysis\, anddevelop a working hypothesis about the impact of remote work policies. We’ll build some simple data visualizations\, test our hypotheses\, writeup a short conclusion\, and prepare a final report for Mayor Ellation.&nbsp\;There are 9 Milestones in this project. There are several Tasksyou need to complete within each Milestone. This project should take you no more than 30 hours to finish. Depending on your skill level\, it may take you less time.In this project\, you will learn using a combination of videos\, articles\, and external data work in spreadsheets. Our teamhas provided you with several external links and resources which will supplement your learning.Project participants who complete Milestones 1-9 in accordance with these instructions will receive a Certificate of Completion from the NSDC Project Team.&nbsp\;https://nebigdatahub.org/drm-project/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Impossible Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Impossible Conversations is an exhibition and film installation by artists and filmmakers\, Pratāp Rughani and David Chung. The film centers a seemingly impossible dialogue between Arno Michaelis\, a former Neo-Nazi gang founder and Pardeep Kaleka\, son of the Sikh Temple President\, Satwant Singh Kaleka\, one of seven people killed in the shooting attack at the Oak Creek Sikh Temple (Gurudwara) by a white supremacist in 2012. \n \nThe film installation explores what happens when – for over a decade – Pardeep and Arno committed to a path of restorative communication - to listen deeply and connect with what motivates each other in the genesis and aftermath of atrocity.\nHow does healing begin? From the toxic polarization\, division and extreme racist violence that resulted in one of the worst mass shootings at a religious site in American history\, Pardeep insists that complete healing must eventually be a collective process for all\, to liberate both sides.\nAt Stamps Gallery\, Impossible Conversations will be accompanied by a dialogue and research room as well as photomurals that expand on the themes of restorative justice\, gun violence\, and how to sustain difficult dialogues to combat extremism and toxic polarization. \nExhibition curated by Srimoyee Mitra. Impossible Conversations has been supported in part by the Arts Research: Incubation &amp\; Acceleration (ARIA) program of The University of Michigan Office of the Vice President Research and the Arts Initiative\, Institute of Firearm Prevention Pilot Grant\, the Stamps School of Art and Design\, and the University of the Arts London. \nExhibition Programs\nAn Opening Screening\, Talkback\, and Reception will take place on Friday\, January 17\, 2025 from 5:30 – 8 p.m.\, and a Symposium will take place on Saturday\, January 18\, 2025 from 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. \nAbout the Artists\nPratāp Rughani is a writer and non-fiction filmmaker. His work develops documentary practice to enable people of radically different perspectives come into relation\, sometimes in the aftermath of violence and atrocity for example in South Africa\, Aboriginal Australia\, Europe\, Rwanda and the USA. Configuring a pro-filmic space to enable shared “witnessing” and the path towards restorative justice is a driving force in “Impossible Conversations” evolving through his practice in over thirty documentary films and exhibitions for BBC TV\, Channel 4\, Modern Art Oxford\, galleries and activist groups. The ethics of giving sustained attention to the experiences of marginalized\, excluded or sometimes reviled “others” and bringing them in relationship to the broader culture is central to his research into ethics of storytelling and the development of “Restorative Narrative.”\nRughani writes widely on the ethics of creative practice\, serves on several editorial Boards\, has won awards for film\, teaching\, and research\, and is Professor of Documentary Practices at the University of the Arts\, London.\nDavid Chung is an acclaimed visual artist and filmmaker. His work focuses on how identities are shaped in immigrant communities and the challenges of refugees as they integrate into new homelands.\nChung has exhibited his drawings\, prints\, and video installations at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts\, the Asia Society\, the Walker Arts Center\, the Studio Museum in Harlem\, the Gwangju Biennale\, the Smithsonian Institution\, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Chung has received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and the National Board Film Board of Canada's Award for Best Documentary Film. He was the 2013 Kim Koo Visiting Professor at Harvard University. \nChung is a professor and the director of the MFA Graduate Program at the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Stampede
DESCRIPTION:Born from their passion for the arts\, The Stampede is a student-led organization building a new space for artists. In September 2023\, four undergraduates united with a simple mission: to create a space for showcasing exciting new art work. They established a foundation and worked to build a buzz through outreach and excitement. The Stampede first hosted a pop-up exhibition (party) at a friend's house\, exhibiting 53 pieces of original work\, with food\, drink\, and music\, and a smashing turnout from the local community. They have since evolved\, developed an infrastructure\, and grown into a platform for dynamic art work.\nToday\, The Stampede curates and facilitates exhibitions and events that bring together artists\, writers\, and musicians. From pop-ups and art markets to concerts and gallery shows\, they provide a vibrant platform for creativity for the community. The organization has broken new ground on multiple accounts to pave new ways for artists today and tomorrow\; bridging the divide between student and school. Functioning as an artist collective\, The Stampede focus on creating large-scale artworks\, promotional materials\, and merchandise for their events.\nThis exhibition offers a glimpse behind the scenes of The Stampede: its origins\, current endeavors\, and future aspirations. Since its inception\, The Stampede has continuously surprised with its growth and transformation. Committed to providing opportunities for artists\, they will keep hosting events for their community and friends.\nJoin The Stampede in their journey\; they invite you to... RUN WITH US!

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Friday Lecture Series. Tech for Whom? Considerations for Southeast Asia
DESCRIPTION:The tech landscape in Southeast Asia is buzzing. Countries are attracting billions of dollars of Big Tech investments\; drafting and implementing digital policies\, strategies\, and masterplans\; and anchoring their growth trajectories on digitalization and playing a key role in global tech value chains. On the ground\, developers are innovating language models to better suit and represent local contexts\, and e-commerce is already one of the fastest rising sectors in the region. As Southeast Asia's digital transformation begins to unfold\, it’s worth asking fundamental questions about who this tech will ultimately benefit and at what cost.\n\nElina Noor is a senior fellow in the Asia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace\, where she focuses on developments in Southeast Asia\, particularly the impact and implications of technology in reshaping power dynamics\, governance\, and nation-building in the region.\n\nThis will be a virtual presentation. Please register at https://myumi.ch/JwDrq.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at valdezjo@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:More than Gray: Reimagining Early America in Full Color
DESCRIPTION:The American past was lived in full color\, but this vibrant history can be easily missed in surviving evidence. You can’t deny that there’s something about a black-and-white photograph that feels… stuffy. With portraits showing people with their shirts buttoned right to the neck and everything in shades of gray and brown\, our imaginations can incline to thinking of the past as a bit staid\, if not downright dull. But look a little closer\, and you’ll see signs that the fashion choices available to those who came before us were more colorful than you might first think. From the fabrics they wore\, to the games they played\, or the books they read\, their world was alive with bright hues. This exhibit invites you to reimagine history with a fuller color palette and picture the vibrancy and joy that just might be hidden behind the unsmiling photographs.\n\nExhibition opening weekdays from 12-4.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Physical and molecular mechanisms of engineered T cell activation
DESCRIPTION:Cytotoxic T cells expressing engineered chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) consolidate key components of native T cell triggering machinery into a single transmembrane receptor capable of scanning for specific pathogenic markers. These programmable therapeutics are capable of identifying and destroying target cells but have had limited clinical success and often exhibit off-target toxicities. The mechanistic determinants for threshold setting in CAR T cells are still poorly understood and are expected to inform future improvements of the therapies. Signaling onset\, at the cell surface\, may be tuned by spatiotemporal\, topographic\, mechanical\, and chemical parameters. Using an in vitro cell:cell killing assay using low CAR T cell:target cell ratios\, we show that small numbers of binding interactions by CAR T cells are sufficient to induce target cell death. This single cell sensitivity is enhanced by mechanical features of the microenvironment. To explore the potency of individual cells\, we mapped CAR T cell inputs to cellular activation and cytotoxic responses using a single molecule in vitro reconstitution assay. We monitored the collection of binding interactions that culminate in polarization of lytic granules that are trafficked to the intercellular junction and may undergo exocytosis to release cytolytic factors. We found that\, surprisingly\, some CAR T cells mobilize cytotoxic responses to a small number of antigenic binding events\, suggesting a different molecular activation threshold than previously appreciated. These characteristics bear an uncanny resemblance to the native T cell receptor (TCR)\, leading us to explore how the native receptor may be contributing to CAR T cell function. I will discuss how mechanochemical features of the CAR T cell:target cell junction tune the activation setpoint and our efforts to map the molecular mechanisms underlying the mobilization of the cytotoxic response.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Sacred Glaciers: Exploring 4000 Year Old Shrines of Camelid Herders in the High Altitudes of the Peruvian Andes
DESCRIPTION:Ceremonies and rituals in herding societies are practices believed to protect herders and their flocks. These rituals also help maintain social reproduction and cope with the uncertainties surrounding flock fertility. This phenomenon has been documented in modern camelid herders in the Andes. Rich ethnohistorical and ethnographic data reveal the significance of worshiping deities\, mythical heroes\, and ancestral spirits in llama herder communities. However\, our understanding of these ceremonies and rites during camelid domestication—when hunter-gatherers transitioned to herding—remains limited. This talk will present findings from a 4\,000-year-old ceremonial center that served as a gathering place for small groups of herders in the upper Santa Valley\, Peru. We will explore the worship of glaciers personified as megalithic stones believed to help flock fertility and protect herders and their animals.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Unpacking an Employment-Wage Puzzle: Ban-the-Box Hiring Policies\, Sorting\, & Job Quality for those with and without Criminal Records
DESCRIPTION:Outside of specific contexts\, such as technology policy or international business\, management scholars’ engagement with research on policy efficacy* is inconsistent\, even when policies have direct implications for organizations and organizational members. Traditionally\, we have been more likely to exploit policy changes for research design purposes rather than directly examine policy efficacy. In this preliminary research\, we examine the Ban-the-Box (BTB) policy\, which\, similar to many policies\, may have unintended consequences for the employers and potential employees that it was designed to influence. At the same time\, research on BTB's efficacy is mixed\, with the most convincing research suggesting that policymakers should be wary of the policy's effect. We replicate findings that point to an unintended consequence but then take steps to unpack geographic variance in the effect of BTB. This variance points to a need to better appreciate how regional differences in structural factors (such as residential segregation) affect whether BTB is successful. We then propose some next steps to advance this early-stage research\, and offer our thoughts on how our work has the potential to serve as a model for management scholars who work on topics with policy implications.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: Applications of Stochastic Optimal Control to Pandemic Management\, Optimal Energy Production\, and Decentralized Finance
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This talk discusses three applied problems in the field of stochastic optimal control which have significant implications in their application fields. We first discuss an optimal control problem in pandemic modeling and mitigation which incorporates novel macroeconomic elements. By modeling the reactions of individuals to current infection levels through personal protective measures which alter disease transmission\, improvements in public health outcomes can be achieved with minimal macroeconomic sacrifices. We then present an efficient and accurate machine learning algorithm to solve the high-dimensional optimal switching problem faced by a power plant operator under uncertain production costs and profits. The algorithm is able to perform accurately on high-dimensional models without suffering from extremely long run times arising from the curse of dimensionality. Finally\, we combine models of competitive games with empirical data to investigate competition between liquidity providers in a decentralized cryptocurrency exchange. Comparison of simulated and observed price dynamics indicates that the model is accurately capturing pool dynamics and has potential for use in DeFi investment.\n\nContact: Silas Alben

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Black Hole Information\, Replica Wormholes\, and Macroscopic Superposition States
DESCRIPTION:We discuss recent applications of Euclidean path integrals\nto the black hole information problem. In calculations with replica\nwormholes as the next-to-leading order correction to the\nGibbons-Hawking saddlepoint\, the radiation density matrix approaches a\npure state at late times\, following the Page curve. We compare unitary\nevaporation of black holes (in real time)\, mediated by calculable\nquantum hair effects\, with the replica wormhole results. Both replica\nwormhole and quantum hair approaches imply that radiation states are\nmacroscopic superpositions of spacetime backgrounds\, invalidating\nfirewall and monogamy of entanglement constructions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Linguistic Anthropology Colloquium | “Military Chimeras: Iconic Resonance in a Nervous Semiotic System”
DESCRIPTION:The United States Military defines itself as an institution governed by exacting rules and discipline\, dedicated to producing upstanding super-citizens. Yet Pete Hegseth\, Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense\, openly rejects the relevance of international law in combat\, asserting that American power is best sustained through unrestrained violence. This talk examines the semiotic and linguistic reverberations in military training and discourse that reveal a persistent tension between the honorable and the transgressive. I argue that this tension forms a semiotic infrastructure with the potential to reinforce the necropolitical strategies Hegseth champions.\n\nJanet McIntosh\, professor of anthropology at Brandeis University\, is a sociocultural and linguistic anthropologist whose work in Kenya and the U.S. has explored essentialism\, personhood\, religion\, colonialism and race\, right-wing ideologies\, and militarization. Her first book\, “The Edge of Islam: Power\, Personhood\, and Ethnoreligious Boundaries on the Kenya Coast” (Duke University Press\, 2009)\, won the 2010 Clifford Geertz Prize in the Anthropology of Religion. Her second book\, “Unsettled: Denial and Belonging among White Kenyans” (University of California Press\, 2016)\, received Honorable Mention in the 2018 American Ethnological Society's Senior Book Prize\, and Honorable Mention in the 2017 Victor Turner Prize for Ethnographic Writing. She is the co-editor\, with Norma Mendoza-Denton\, of “Language in the Trump Era: Scandals and Emergencies” (Cambridge University Press 2020). After fieldwork and writing support from the NEH and ACLS\, she is currently finishing a book titled “Kill Talk: Language and Military Necropolitics” (Oxford University Press).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Measures on combinatorial objects (Combinatorics Seminar)
DESCRIPTION:Let C be a class of finite relational structures (e.g.\,\ngraphs\, trees\, total orders\, etc.). A \"measure\" on C is a rule\nassigning a number to each object of C such that some identities hold.\nEach measure that exists is something of a miracle\, and leads to a\nvery interesting algebraic object\, namely\, a tensor category. I will\ndescribe some of the known measures\, and discuss some of the many open\nproblems around them. (I won't say much about tensor categories.)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Miyaoka-Yau Inequality
DESCRIPTION:The uniformization theorem classifies simply-connected Riemann surfaces into a trichotomy\, which can be described in many ways\, such as Euler characteristic\, existence of special metric\, or ampleness of its canonical bundle. \n\nIn higher dimensions\, uniformization is much more complicated\, and Miyaoka-Yau inequalities is an algebro-geometric approach towards this goal. In particular\, when equality is achieved\, we have an analog of the 1-dimensional situation. \n\nWe will introduce Chern classes of a line bundle\, Kähler-Einstein (KE) metrics\, and sketch a proof of the inequality in the smooth case using KE metrics. Half of the talk will be introducing notions and tools in complex differential geometry.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture Series | Climate Ledgers: Risk\, Cyclone Science and the Commodification of Monsoon
DESCRIPTION:Attend via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/egVVP\n\nThe paper brings together the intertwined histories of maritime insurance\, and the technical as well as vernacular representations of maritime storms in the late eighteenth century Indian Ocean. The technical representation of storms became an urgent issue of prediction as well as arbitrating legal questions around liability for Llyods of London and local courts in colonial Bengal. The question of commodification drove both these issues\, as the paper shows\, for climate and weather disturbance became the object of revenue generation even as the uncertainty attached to it was precisely what drove its commodification. Focusing on the process of double commodification\, the paper reveals how the non-corporeal entity of the monsoon was enclosed as a commodity and its risk further priced and thus offloaded through other financial instruments. Ultimately the paper makes a case for historicizing what is too often seen as the more contemporary phenomenon of the financialization of the climate crisis.\n \n Debjani Bhattacharyya holds the Chair for the History of the Anthropocene at the University of Zurich\, where she directs the Digital History Lab. She is the author of Empire and Ecology in the Bengal Delta: The Making of Calcutta (Cambridge University Press\, 2018). She is a non-resident fellow at the Center for the Advanced Study of India\, University of Pennsylvania since 2019. Currently she is writing a long history of how marine insurance market’s risk apprehensions shaped weather knowledge and a derivatives market in climate futures in the Indian Ocean Region.\n \n *Made possible with the generous support of the Title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education.*

SUMMARY:Film Screening:The Color of Friendship
DESCRIPTION:This February marks the 25th anniversary of the Disney Channel Original Movie The Color of Friendship\, a children's movie set in the late 1970s about the Black daughter of a US congressman who is excited to host a foreign exchange student from Africa until a white South African who supports the Apartheid regime arrives.\n\nAlthough the film was broadcast on youth programming\, it does not shy away from frank and difficult representations of the violent history during this period. The film thus invites questions about US representations of transnational histories\; the pedagogical function of film\, especially for children\; hospitality and tolerance\; child witnesses of violence\; and the ongoing role of gendered tropes like sentimentality in multiculturalist rhetoric. Please note the film addresses and depicts anti-Black violence.\n\nPlease join us on February 7 at 6 p.m. in Angell Hall 3222 for a screening of the film followed by discussion with University of Michigan PhD students Kabelo Sandile Motsoeneng (English) and Maya Sudarkasa (History). Food will be provided. The event is free and open to the public.\n\nIf you have any questions about the event or would like to discuss how we may make the event more accessible for you\, please contact the organizers Vanessa Cooper (vscooper@umich.edu) and James Kiselik (jqk@umich.edu).\n\nWe gratefully acknowledge support to make this event possible from the University of Michigan Comparative Literature\, English Language and Literature\, and Women's and Gender Studies departments.

SUMMARY:Performance:Nate — A One Man Show
DESCRIPTION:Natalie Palamides premiered her show Nate to wide acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival\, where it won a Total Theatre Award for Innovation and Experimentation in 2018 before Amy Poehler produced it as a Netflix special. As the show begins\, we meet Nate\, “a hypermasculine\, adrenaline fueled\, protein powder enthusiast … a man’s man.” (NPR) Performed by Natalie Palamides in drag\, Nate careens between making the audience laugh and making them uncomfortable\, earnestly asking for permission while manipulating audience members to comply. The constant mixed signals come to a head with conflicting interpretations of consent — though perhaps not in the ways you would expect. This clever and provocative deconstruction of toxic masculinity sticks with you long after the performance ends.\n\nCONTENT WARNING\nThis production contains overt sexuality

SUMMARY:Performance:Blind Pilot
DESCRIPTION:New music!\n\nThe first Blind Pilot album in eight years\, In the Shadow of the Holy Mountain emerged from a period of artistic crisis and the radical transformation of their creative ecosystem. “I went through a few years where I wasn’t able to write—I tried therapy\, I read books on writer’s block\, I went on writing trips\, but nothing was helping\,” says Israel Nebeker\, frontman for the Oregon-bred band. After stepping back and reimagining his songwriting approach\, Nebeker challenged himself to write an entire album in a month\, then brought those songs to his bandmates with a newfound sense of receptivity. “I told myself that whatever songs came through in that month would be for the love of the band and music we make together\,” says Nebeker. “Instead of being controlling in the studio\, I wanted to let the songs live and breathe with the band as an entity. By the time we finished\, it was the most joy we’d ever had in making an album together.”\n\nProduced by Josh Kaufman (The Hold Steady\, David Wax Museum)\, In the Shadow of the Holy Mountain brings a potent new energy to the elegantly composed folk/indie-rock of past LPs like 2016’s And Then Like Lions. In a profound step forward for the band—whose lineup also includes drummer/co-founder Ryan Dobrowski\, bassist Luke Ydstie\, and multi-instrumentalist Kati Claborn—Blind Pilot’s fourth full-length unfolds with an exquisite fluidity\, fully harnessing the undeniable chemistry. “In the past we’ve always been very serious and intentional about the process\, but Josh often encouraged us to throw away our preconceived notions of what the songs were supposed to be\,” says Nebeker. “So much of the album came from all of us playing live together\, listening to each other and trusting our instincts\, and really getting to the core of the song\,” Dobrowski adds. The result: the most revelatory expression yet of Blind Pilot’s palpable reverence for music as a connective force.\n\nWhile Blind Pilot intends to tour principally as a quartet in support of the record\, the album includes contributions from longtime trumpeter/keyboardist Dave Jorgensen and vibraphonist Ian Krist. In bringing the album to life\, the band worked with a rich palette of instrumentation\, handling each track with equal parts extraordinary care and unbridled spontaneity. For both Dobrowski and Nebeker—who formed an early iteration of the band as college students in the mid-aughts—those moments of ineffably closeness serve as the lifeblood of Blind Pilot. “For me making this album felt like celebrating being together and still feeling that deep connection that’s been a throughline for our entire adult lives\,” Dobrowski says. “One of my very favorite things about music is the way it not only connects us as bandmates\, but allows us to connect to an audience—and then within that audience\, people end up connecting with each other. It’s this powerful thing that’s unlike anything else\, and in a way it’s kind of like magic.”\n\nVIP ticket includes:\nOne (1) General Admission ticket\nInvitation to pre-show experience\, including:\n- Private acoustic performance\n- Group photo with the band\nExclusive VIP merch bundle\, including:\n- Signed poster\n- Commemorative VIP tote bag\n- Custom journal\n- VIP tour laminate\nMerchandise shopping prior to doors opening to the public\nEarly entry into the venue
