DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

DESCRIPTION:View beautifully illustrated books that stand as remarkable testaments to the work of twentieth-century small private presses\, which\, in contrast to the trend of mass commercialization\, produced limited editions that celebrated the uniqueness of manual craftsmanship. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

DESCRIPTION:The leaf surface is a dynamic landscape where tiny\, specialized structures help plants interact with the world around them. Let’s bring this world into view! Join us for an exhibit that highlights the complex and often beautiful anatomy of leaves from the Matthaei collection. Plants throughout the conservatory will be paired with microscope photographs and micro-CT scans that illustrate the otherwise invisible structures that protect leaves from chewing insects\, absorb (or repel!) water\, and even recruit “bodyguards”. You won’t look at leaves the same way again! \n\nThis project is a collaboration between MBGNA and the Weber and Vasconcelos labs in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\, led by PhD student Rosemary Glos.

Through Larry's eyes\, we observe his human family\, and his owner Diana. Larry hides in Diana’s suitcase as she travels to her job on the Moon and experiences weightlessness. Once on the Moon\, Larry observes how the Earth looks a lot like the Moon did from his porch back home.\n\nThe state-of-the-art Planetarium & Dome Theater at the U-M Museum of Natural History transports visitors beyond distant stars and back in time from the comfort of reclining seats. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

This is a very significant piece of Black history in the United States\, and we want to make sure that we ask as many people as possible who are Black to be involved in this production so that this may come to fruition.\n\nShow Synopsis: \nWalter Sr.\, the father of the Younger family\, has died. A check for $10\,000 from the life insurance policy is coming in the mail\, and everyone has different ideas on what to do with the money. Walter’s son\, Walter Lee\, wants to be the owner of a liquor store\; Walter’s daughter\, Beneatha\, needs to pay tuition for medical school\; Walter’s wife wants to buy a house. \n\nThis award-winning play by Lorraine Hansberry is a deeply human story centered on the black experience in a segregated America\, asking how we should live in the diaspora. The play explores the choice between assimilation and heritage\, the inaccessibility of the American Dream\, and racism and misogyny within and without the black community. It has a lot to say about the human condition\, about family and humanity\, and about the struggle against oppression.

DESCRIPTION:On February 15th 2025\, MiMSA will host our annual Malaysian Cultural Night (MCN) at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre. The event will begin with a trailer\, followed by a play titled ‘Dear Wanita\,’ and will end with a social accompanied by some Malaysian food offerings. Admission is free of charge for everyone!\n\nThe trailer and play encompass the lives of four Malaysian women: Nora\, Juwita\, Carina\, and Ashwin. These women have different backgrounds that explore topics of womanhood\, including feminism\, motherhood\, and gender inequality. The play incorporates Malaysia’s diverse cultural elements\, including traditional dances\, fashion\, and lifestyle—all packaged into a coming-of-wisdom drama. This play aims to raise awareness of the underrepresented stories\, triumphs\, and struggles of Malaysian women\, which ultimately transcend Southeast Asian borders. Additionally\, to end the night\, MiMSA provides attendees with a serving of famous Malaysian dishes namely Nasi Lemak\, Satay\, Kuih Ketayap\, and a few others as they lounge and indulge in good conversation at the few areas we reserved like the Psychology and Mathematics Atriums. This is a chance for people to talk with Malaysians at the university\, have discourse with each other about the play as well as Malaysia generally\, and hopefully leave MCN 2025 with new friends.\n\nThe night will begin at 6.30 p.m.\, although we encourage guests to arrive at 6.00 p.m. The intended audience for MCN includes students\, faculty\, and staff of the University of Michigan\, as well as members of the broader Ann Arbor community and individuals interested in Southeast Asian culture. Additionally\, the event serves as a gathering point for Malaysians living in the United States\, offering them an opportunity to connect and share their culture. By welcoming such a diverse audience\, MCN 2025 fosters an inclusive space for cultural exchange and cross-cultural understanding\, inviting participants from various backgrounds to engage in meaningful dialogue and connection.\n\nWe hope to see you at Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre this year and hope that you enjoy our show! DESCRIPTION:Jake Blount (pronounced: blunt\, they/he) is an award-winning interpreter of Black folk music based in Providence\, RI. Initially recognized for his skill as a string band musician\, Blount has charted an unprecedented\, Afrofuturist course on his pilgrimage through sound archives and song collections. In his hands\, the banjo\, fiddle\, electric guitar and synthesizer become ceremonial objects used to channel the insurgent creativity of his forebears. From transfixing solo sets to full-band festival appearances complete with crowd-surfing and ecstatic chants\, Blount’s performances – like his recent Smithsonian Folkways release\, The New Faith – seamlessly merge centuries-old traditional songs with the trappings and techniques of modern Black genres.\nComposer and hammer dulcimer virtuoso Simon Chrisman (he/him) brings an unusual and path-breaking style to an instrument that has previously been thought to have limited range and technique\, combining “chamber music’s finely calibrated arrangements with bluegrass’s playful virtuosity and pop music’s melodic resourcefulness.” (The Boston Herald) His touch and sophisticated rhythmic sensibilities are redefining the instrument and earning the attention of musicians from all over the world. Based in Oregon\, he tours with Grammy-nominated Kittel and Co.\, the Bee Eaters\, and Wes Corbett.\nOne of Dance Magazine's \"25 to Watch\,\" Nic Gareiss (he/they) has been hailed by the New York Times for his \"dexterous melding of Irish and Appalachian dance\" and called \"the most inventive and expressive step dancer on the scene” by the Boston Herald. Informed by 25 years of ethnographic study and performance\, Gareiss’ work draws from many percussive dance practices to weave together a technique facilitating his love of improvisation\; clog\, flatfoot\, and step dance vocabulary\; and musical collaboration. In this way Gareiss reimagines movement as a musical practice\, recasting percussive dance as a medium that queers the boundaries between sight\, sound\, and touch.
