SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Material World
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition seeks to explore the intersection of two seemingly disparate fields—engineering and the visual arts—through the lens of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE). While both disciplines are extensively studied and practiced\, their convergence is often overlooked. With this body of work\, artist Trevor Balduck aim's to bridge that gap by presenting MSE not only as a technical pursuit but as a source of inspiration and beauty within the realm of artistic expression.\n\nThe eight pieces in this exhibit form a cohesive 2x4 grid measuring 4x8 feet\, guiding viewers through a chronological exploration of the processes involved in materials-focused research. Each work is an abstraction of the actions and methodologies found in a materials lab—transformed into visual representations that capture the elegance inherent in the science behind material properties and manipulation. These pieces illustrate the idea that MSE\, in its essence\, shares a parallel with art: both fields rely on experimentation\, transformation\, and discovery.\n\n\nIn constructing these works\, Trevor employed a range of mediums\, including acrylics\, oils\, metallic paints\, tapes\, and sprays\, which reflect the broad spectrum of materials that artists engage with in their practice. The varied use of materials serves as a direct parallel to the diversity of substances and techniques explored in MSE. Some of the works intentionally mimic specific processes\, such as the creation of grain orientation maps\, material cutting\, and oxidation\, translating technical procedures into visual forms that invite contemplation and interpretation.\n\nUltimately\, this exhibition aims to celebrate the beauty of both the scientific and artistic worlds\, demonstrating that\, at their core\, they are not so different—both are dedicated to understanding\, manipulating\, and giving new form to the materials of the world around us. Through this work\, Trevor hopes to inspire a deeper appreciation for the art inherent in science\, and vice versa\, showing that the boundaries between disciplines are not fixed\, but fluid and full of potential.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andy Ross Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The pieces here are from a large series of works made over the last several years. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. He received a BFA degree from College for Creative Studies\, and an MFA degree from University of Michigan. He has taught photography\, art\, and web design at colleges in California and Michigan. His photographs and collages have been exhibited in schools\, galleries\, and museums across the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Chimera
DESCRIPTION:*Chimera* is an immersive exhibition centered on a newly commissioned film\, also titled *Chimera*\, which fuses elements from Newsome's prior works *Hands Performance* and *Build or Destroy* with a new interquel film that bridges their narratives. This connecting piece explores the origins and journey of the bejeweled figure in flames from *Build or Destroy*\, revealing where they come from and the purpose that led them to Earth. This exhibition reflects a bold shift in Newsome's practice toward sci-fi filmmaking\, layering the architecture of film\, movement\, and world-building to probe themes of identity\, resistance\, and creation. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Elizabeth Boyd-Hartmann Dizik Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This body of work represents a playful exploration of form\, color\, and scale through the lens of cellular shapes. Inspired by the complex patterns of biological life\, the pieces are a celebration of growth\, transformation\, and the joy of experimentation. The use of non-precious materials\, such as wood balls and paint\, allowed for a liberating approach to composition and color\, while the spherical forms and circular panels evoke the look of petri dishes—symbolizing both scientific curiosity and organic development.\nBorn in Detroit\, Elizabeth is a multidisciplinary artist and mother based in the metro Detroit area\, where she works from a studio in her home. With a background in bench jewelry\, her earlier work focused on studio jewelry and was represented by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal.\nElizabeth’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. She holds a BA in Jewelry Design\, with First Class Honours\, from Central Saint Martins in London\, a BFA from the University of Michigan\, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, where she specialized in Metalsmithing and Architecture. Her diverse practice spans jewelry\, sculpture\, and installation\, blending materials and techniques to explore themes of production\, growth\, transformation\, and organic form.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Redefining the Crown
DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Bibliophile and the Library: Private-Press Books from the Collection of Bill Heidrich
DESCRIPTION:View beautifully illustrated books that stand as remarkable testaments to the work of twentieth-century small private presses\, which\, in contrast to the trend of mass commercialization\, produced limited editions that celebrated the uniqueness of manual craftsmanship. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Other:Leaves Under the Lens
DESCRIPTION:The leaf surface is a dynamic landscape where tiny\, specialized structures help plants interact with the world around them. Let’s bring this world into view! Join us for an exhibit that highlights the complex and often beautiful anatomy of leaves from the Matthaei collection. Plants throughout the conservatory will be paired with microscope photographs and micro-CT scans that illustrate the otherwise invisible structures that protect leaves from chewing insects\, absorb (or repel!) water\, and even recruit “bodyguards”. You won’t look at leaves the same way again! \n\nThis project is a collaboration between MBGNA and the Weber and Vasconcelos labs in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\, led by PhD student Rosemary Glos.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Intergenerational Mobility: Racial Disparities in Mobility from a Holistic Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Join the Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics as Janeria Easley\, Assistant Professor of African American Studies\, Emory University\, presents\, “Intergenerational Mobility: Racial Disparities in Mobility from a Holistic Perspective.”\n\nAbstract: Domain-specific intergenerational elasticities of parent and child attainment\, such as those capturing the relationship between parent’s education and child’s education\, have been the ruling practice for studies of mobility since Blau and Duncan (1967). This practice has yielded very different conclusions about the extent of intergenerational persistence in the United States\, with estimates ranging from .64 for neighborhood mobility to as low as .32 for occupation. We utilize the Panel Study of Income Dynamics to develop latent variables we term “origin profile” and “destination profile” based on five indicators: occupation\, income\, education\, wealth\, and neighborhood socioeconomic status. We find that Black White disparities in mobility between origin and destination profiles are quite profound.\n\nLearn more and RSVP: https://inequality.umich.edu/janeria-easley/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:\"Brown Bag\" Seminar with Wei Jin\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Johns Hopkins UniversityDepartment of Applied Mathematics and StatisticsPostdoctoral Fellow\nTitle: Robust Bayesian Learning for Individualized Treatment Rules Under Unmeasured Confounding\nAbstract: Data-driven personalized decision-making has become increasingly important in many scientific fields. Most existing methods rely on the assumption of no unmeasured confounding to establish causal inferences before proceeding with decision-making for identifying the optimal individualized treatment rule (ITR). However\, this assumption is often violated in practice\, especially in observational studies. While techniques like instrumental variables or proxy variables can help address unmeasured confounding\, such additional data sources are not always available. Moreover\, robustly learning the optimal ITR from observational data is challenging when data are unbalanced\, where certain combinations of treatments and patient characteristics are underrepresented. In this talk\, I will introduce a novel Bayesian approach to robustly learn the optimal ITR for continuous treatments under unmeasured confounding. For causal identification\, we propose a Bayesian causal model that achieves unique identification under certain mild distributional assumptions\, without requiring additional data sources. For policy optimization\, we develop a practical algorithm that robustly learns the optimal ITR by identifying a conservative policy. Through simulations and an application to a large-scale kidney transplantation dataset\, we demonstrate the proposed method’s identifiability\, utility\, and robustness\, highlighting its value in advancing precision medicine.\nNOTE: Lunch will be provided after the seminar for all attendees.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Colorism Multimedia Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Colorism comprises works of video\, still photography\, and sculpture questioning our psychosocial and biological ideas about skin color and treatment of people\, based on skin tones\, including within racial groups. This exhibit asks: What do we know about the root causes of prejudice toward skin color? What can we do to improve interpersonal and structural colorism? To answer these questions\, Prof. Rogério Pinto (Social Work) uses personal and historical materials and interview data to optimize audience interaction\, including critical dialogues around colorism while audiences are viewing the installation or immediately after viewing it.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Tuesday Seminar Series - Impacts of Pleistocene extinctions on local mammal assemblages from across the globe
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our ongoing Tuesday Lunch Seminar Series.\n\nThe megafaunal extinctions of the Late Pleistocene are well known to have wiped out the largest mammal species all around the world. Therefore\, they can serve as a recent analogue for modern biodiversity loss. In this talk\, I will present on my dissertation research which looked at the impacts of these extinctions on the biomass and energy use of 652 fossil assemblages from across the globe.\nBoth metrics were greatly reduced after the extinctions and the biogeographical distribution of energy-use patterns was fundamentally altered in ways that relate to the development of agriculture and animal domestications in the Holocene. Fascinating relationships between assemblage energy use and species richness are also explored. Overall\, this talk will give new insights into how humans have impacted mammal communities over the past 130\,000 years.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Between Structural Stability and Personnel Fluidity: The Chinese Party-State in Light of Organizational Mobility
DESCRIPTION:*This event is in-person only*\n\nCo-authored by Yuze Sui\, Department of Sociology\, Stanford University\n \n The party-state is the foundation of the Soviet model of authoritarianism\, with the party apparatus dominating state organizations. Focusing on personnel management practices\, we examine empirical patterns of personnel flow across the party and government sectors in a large Chinese bureaucracy. Our findings show that noticeable variations across administrative levels and functional areas. We account for these observed patterns in light of the interplay between the logic of political control and incentive provision\, mediated by other organizational mechanisms.\n \n Xueguang Zhou is a professor of sociology\, the Kwoh-Ting Li Professor in Economic Development\, a senior fellow at Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies\, and the faculty director of the Center for East Asian Studies\, Stanford University. His book *The Logic of Governance in China: An Organizational Approach* (Cambridge University Press\, 2022) summarizes his decade-long research on the institutional logic and practice of governance in contemporary China. Professor Zhou’s current research examines patterns of personnel flow in the Chinese bureaucracy and historical origins of the bureaucratic state in China.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at chinese.studies@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:More than Gray: Reimagining Early America in Full Color
DESCRIPTION:The American past was lived in full color\, but this vibrant history can be easily missed in surviving evidence. You can’t deny that there’s something about a black-and-white photograph that feels… stuffy. With portraits showing people with their shirts buttoned right to the neck and everything in shades of gray and brown\, our imaginations can incline to thinking of the past as a bit staid\, if not downright dull. But look a little closer\, and you’ll see signs that the fashion choices available to those who came before us were more colorful than you might first think. From the fabrics they wore\, to the games they played\, or the books they read\, their world was alive with bright hues. This exhibit invites you to reimagine history with a fuller color palette and picture the vibrancy and joy that just might be hidden behind the unsmiling photographs.\n\nExhibition opening weekdays from 12-4.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Act: A Documentary Film In-process
DESCRIPTION:With the “Hear\, Here” series\, we aim to facilitate conversations around new research in the humanities. Faculty fellows at the Institute for the Humanities will discuss a part of their current project in a short talk followed by a Q & A session.\n\nAbout this talk: My older brother David was found dead in his car in San Francisco in late July 2021. Unsure how to grieve for someone who I mostly knew as an abusive\, sexist\, homophobic\, drug addict and alcoholic\, I turned to old family photos to make sense of things. Among a cache of photos in which he is either conspicuously absent or appears moody\, dissociated\, or stoned\, I stumble upon two unexpected photos of David circa 1984. He is fourteen years old\, holding baby me on his hip\, and gleefully grinning ear to ear. He is donning a brunette wig and wearing a short\, sleeveless baby blue dress. Wherein the other photos in this family archive show a brooding teen marinating in a stupor of anger\, drugs\, and alcohol\, in these photos David is energetic\, lighthearted\, and radiating joy. It was not until after his death that I understood my brother’s life for what it was: an act. The toxically masculine persona I knew of him functioned as a defensive performance of heterosexuality and whiteness\, an elaborate act to distract from his queerness and his Arabness. *The Act *is a documentary film which takes David’s life and death as a plot device through which to examine the effects of anti-Arab racism\, sexism\, and homophobia on Arab Americans (queer and otherwise). \n\nUmayyah Cable is a 2024-25 Richard & Lillian Ives Faculty Fellow at the Institute for the Humanities and Assistant Professor of American Culture and Film\, Television\, & Media.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Combinatorial Methods in Mixed Characteristic: The Theory of t-Monomials
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nThis thesis introduces a framework for defining new classes of rings analogous to various well-studied combinatorial algebras over a field. Given a discrete valuation ring (V\, t)\, the polynomial ring V[x1\, ... \, xn] is zn-graded by multidegree in the variables\, and up to multi-plication by a unit the homogeneous elements are of the form tm0x7{1'1... x\;\;in. We call these elements t-monomials. Likewise\, the Laurent polynomial ring L[xf1\, ... \, x\;1] over the frac- tion field L of V is a zn-graded V-algebra whose homogeneous elements are t-monomials\, up to a unit in V. We define t-Stanley-Reisner rings\, t-semigroup rings\, and t-toric face rings by replacing monomials with t-monomials in the definitions of Stanley-Reisner rings\, semigroup rings\, and toric face rings\, respectively.\n\nEvaluation at t induces an algebraically well-behaved bijection between t-monomials and monomials in one extra variable\; we exploit this bijection to prove results about our new ring classes by comparison to the original versions. This technique is particularly useful to study open questions which are known for equicharacteristic. As a case study\, we demonstrate that the Q-Sequence Conjecture of Hochster and Zhang (proven in equicharacteristic by Hochster and Huneke) holds for all three of these new ring classes.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Webinar: Voices of the Past\, Planning for the Future: Coastal Resilience and Cultural Preservation in the Apalachicola System
DESCRIPTION:Nestled along Florida’s northern Gulf Coast\, the Apalachicola River and Bay system is a landscape rich in both natural and cultural heritage. For over 12\,000 years\, this region has supported diverse ecosystems and communities\, from Indigenous groups to early industries like cotton\, timber\, and fishing. The area now faces mounting challenges\, however: the impacts of climate and the subsequent loss of historical sites threaten the preservation of these communities’ stories. Ranking as one of Florida’s most under-resourced areas\, there is an urgent need to document and preserve the region’s heritage while fostering connections with its current residents.\n\nThis webinar will spotlight the \"People of the Apalachicola System\" project\, which combines archaeological research\, digital modeling\, and innovative community engagement to understand and protect the area’s cultural landscape within the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve. Participants will learn about the project’s approach\, including methods for engaging local voices through workshops and surveys\, as well as how these efforts address threats to heritage resources. The webinar will also share preliminary findings\, highlight effective strategies for fostering collaboration\, and explore how these lessons can guide future preservation and education initiatives in similar at-risk areas. SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Center for Emerging Democracies Roundtable | After 2024: Elections & Democracy
DESCRIPTION:2024 was described as a “super year” for elections. But for many people in many places\, it didn’t feel like a “super year” for democracy. This roundtable takes stock of what we learned from a year when a whopping 4 billion people – half the world’s population\, from America to India to Mexico to South Africa – had the opportunity to vote. Are elections mostly fulfilling their democratic promise\, or increasingly ushering authoritarian politicians into power? And what beyond elections is most urgently needed to strengthen global democracy in the years to come?\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Studying Macroscopic Quantum Phenomena in Emergent Material Phases and Quantum Devices
DESCRIPTION:Hybrid Lecture: Join us on Zoom if you can't come in person: https://umich.zoom.us/j/7650373624\n\nMacroscopic quantum phenomena extend quantum behavior beyond the atomic scale\, leading to complex effects with significant implications for energy-efficient technologies and quantum computing. Understanding these phenomena experimentally requires both ideal material platforms that host them and advanced measurement techniques that can access their quantum degrees of freedom. The first part of my presentation focuses on correlated electronic phenomena in rhombohedral graphene multilayers\, demonstrating their potential as a powerful platform for studying macroscopic quantum phenomena. The second part of the talk shifts focus to superconducting quantum circuits and their interaction with mechanical systems. I will present the observation of interface piezoelectricity in aluminum–silicon junctions\, which is an unexpected decoherence channel in superconducting qubits. Finally\, I will discuss the potential of superconducting quantum circuits and nanomechanical systems as novel tools for characterizing complex macroscopic quantum phenomena in condensed matters.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MEMS Lecture Series | Linda Rui Feng\, University of Toronto
DESCRIPTION:The uses of aromatics in late Medieval China operated in medicinal\, religious\, as well as secular contexts\, with many types of aromatic materials having been imported from Southeast Asia. How did literary texts from this time capture this evolving and complex olfactory world? How were the experiences of smell\, and curated scents in particular\, described\, classified and distinguished? This talk delves into the connoisseurial language associated with curated aromatics (香) in prose narratives from the ninth and tenth centuries\, to examine how such language improvised and adapted vocabulary from related senses in order to capture these airborne and elusive sensory experiences.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Size dependent optronic properties of metal halide perovskite nanostructures: from quantum dots to magic sized clusters and molecular clusters
DESCRIPTION:Size is a critical factor in determining properties of materials\, both quantitatively and qualitatively. In our study of metal halide perovskite nanostructures\, we found some interesting fundamental changes in properties when the size is varied from >4 nm for perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) to <2 nm for perovskite magic sized clusters (PMSCs) and even slightly smaller ligand-assisted metal halide molecular clusters (MHMCs) with much stronger quantum confinement effect (QCE)\, as exemplified by cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) and methylammonium lead bromide (CH3NH3PbBr3). Besides the expected blue shift in absorption and emission with decreasing size due to QCE\, the photoluminescence quantum yield and excited state lifetime decrease generally with decreasing size\, attributed to increased surface defects as well as changes in the electronic band structure with size. In addition\, both the PMSCs and MHMCs are found to exhibit intrinsic chiral property based on circular dichroism (CD) spectra while the corresponding PQDs do not. Possible explanations for the origin of the chirality include asymmetry induced by liquid-liquid interface. Chiral nanoclusters are potentially useful for emerging technologies including spintronics and spin-optronics. Furthermore\, we compare carrier spin dynamics of these nanostructures determined using ultrafast laser techniques and found major effects of size\, phonon\, nuclear spin\, and surface in their lifetimes attributed to different spin relaxation mechanisms.
