In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. This practice has yielded very different conclusions about the extent of intergenerational persistence in the United States\, with estimates ranging from .64 for neighborhood mobility to as low as .32 for occupation. We utilize the Panel Study of Income Dynamics to develop latent variables we term “origin profile” and “destination profile” based on five indicators: occupation\, income\, education\, wealth\, and neighborhood socioeconomic status. For causal identification\, we propose a Bayesian causal model that achieves unique identification under certain mild distributional assumptions\, without requiring additional data sources. For policy optimization\, we develop a practical algorithm that robustly learns the optimal ITR by identifying a conservative policy. Therefore\, they can serve as a recent analogue for modern biodiversity loss. In this talk\, I will present on my dissertation research which looked at the impacts of these extinctions on the biomass and energy use of 652 fossil assemblages from across the globe.\nBoth metrics were greatly reduced after the extinctions and the biogeographical distribution of energy-use patterns was fundamentally altered in ways that relate to the development of agriculture and animal domestications in the Holocene. Fascinating relationships between assemblage energy use and species richness are also explored. Overall\, this talk will give new insights into how humans have impacted mammal communities over the past 130\,000 years. Faculty fellows at the Institute for the Humanities will discuss a part of their current project in a short talk followed by a Q & A session.\n\nAbout this talk: My older brother David was found dead in his car in San Francisco in late July 2021. Unsure how to grieve for someone who I mostly knew as an abusive\, sexist\, homophobic\, drug addict and alcoholic\, I turned to old family photos to make sense of things. Among a cache of photos in which he is either conspicuously absent or appears moody\, dissociated\, or stoned\, I stumble upon two unexpected photos of David circa 1984. He is fourteen years old\, holding baby me on his hip\, and gleefully grinning ear to ear. He is donning a brunette wig and wearing a short\, sleeveless baby blue dress. Wherein the other photos in this family archive show a brooding teen marinating in a stupor of anger\, drugs\, and alcohol\, in these photos David is energetic\, lighthearted\, and radiating joy. It was not until after his death that I understood my brother’s life for what it was: an act. We call these elements t-monomials. Likewise\, the Laurent polynomial ring L[xf1\, ... \, x\;1] over the frac- tion field L of V is a zn-graded V-algebra whose homogeneous elements are t-monomials\, up to a unit in V. We define t-Stanley-Reisner rings\, t-semigroup rings\, and t-toric face rings by replacing monomials with t-monomials in the definitions of Stanley-Reisner rings\, semigroup rings\, and toric face rings\, respectively.\n\nEvaluation at t induces an algebraically well-behaved bijection between t-monomials and monomials in one extra variable\; we exploit this bijection to prove results about our new ring classes by comparison to the original versions. This technique is particularly useful to study open questions which are known for equicharacteristic. In our study of metal halide perovskite nanostructures\, we found some interesting fundamental changes in properties when the size is varied from >4 nm for perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) to <2 nm for perovskite magic sized clusters (PMSCs) and even slightly smaller ligand-assisted metal halide molecular clusters (MHMCs) with much stronger quantum confinement effect (QCE)\, as exemplified by cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) and methylammonium lead bromide (CH3NH3PbBr3). Besides the expected blue shift in absorption and emission with decreasing size due to QCE\, the photoluminescence quantum yield and excited state lifetime decrease generally with decreasing size\, attributed to increased surface defects as well as changes in the electronic band structure with size. In addition\, both the PMSCs and MHMCs are found to exhibit intrinsic chiral property based on circular dichroism (CD) spectra while the corresponding PQDs do not. Possible explanations for the origin of the chirality include asymmetry induced by liquid-liquid interface. Chiral nanoclusters are potentially useful for emerging technologies including spintronics and spin-optronics. Furthermore\, we compare carrier spin dynamics of these nanostructures determined using ultrafast laser techniques and found major effects of size\, phonon\, nuclear spin\, and surface in their lifetimes attributed to different spin relaxation mechanisms. Her interview with Orhan Pamuk\, the Nobel Prize winner for literature in 2006 came out in PMLA.
