The varied use of materials serves as a direct parallel to the diversity of substances and techniques explored in MSE. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Parties now rank among the most unpopular institutions in society--less trusted than business\, the police\, and the media. Identification with parties has plummeted\, and even those who are loyal to a party report feeling that parties care more about special interests than about regular citizens. What does a \"good\" political party look like? Why do we urgently need them? And how do we get them?\n \n The Great Retreat explores the development of political parties as democracy expanded across the West in the nineteenth century. It focuses in particular on mass parties\, and the ways they served as intermediaries that fostered ties between citizens and governments. While parties have become professionalized and nationalized\, they have lost the robust organizational density that made them effective representatives. After the Cold War\, a neoliberal economic consensus\, changes to campaign finance\, and shifting party priorities weakened the party systems of Western democracies. As Didi Kuo argues\, this erosion of political parties has contributed to the recent crisis of democratic capitalism\, as weak parties have ceded governance to the private sector.\n \n For democracy to adapt to a new era of global capitalism\, Kuo makes the case that we need strong intermediaries like mass parties--socially embedded institutions with deep connections to communities and citizens. Parties are essential to long-term democratic stability and economic growth\, while the breakdown of party systems\, on the other hand\, has historically led to democratic collapse. Kuhn’s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962). The new quantum mechanics\, to use a building metaphor\, was erected on the ruins of the old quantum theory\, brought down by an accumulation of anomalies. In our book Constructing Quantum Mechanics (2019/2023)\, Tony Duncan and I use a different building metaphor. As suggested by the subtitles of the two volumes of our book\, The Scaffold: 1900–1923 and The Arch: 1923–1927\, we see the architects of the new quantum mechanics using parts of the old quantum theory as scaffolds to build the arch of the new one. In this talk\, after sketching the underlying alternative to Kuhn's account of scientific revolutions in general\, I will give an overview\, as non technical as possible\, of the genesis of quantum mechanics in the period 1900–1927. In the past few years\, a general theory of stability\, $\Theta$-stratifications\, and good moduli spaces for algebraic stacks has generalized many aspects of this moduli problem. However\, questions of boundedness do not yet have a general answer -- this tends to be one of the trickiest parts of applying the machinery. I will discuss a new approach to boundedness for a vast generalization of the moduli of vector bundles on a curve: moduli spaces of objects in a dg-category that are semistable with respect to a Bridgeland stability condition. This involves reformulating the notion of a Bridgeland stability condition in a way that is especially convenient for moduli theory. But this does not need to happen in discrete time. This suggests defining a new object\, the specific relative entropy\, as a scaled limit of the relative entropy between the discretized laws of the martingales. This definition goes all the way back to Nina Gantert's PhD thesis\, and in recent time Hans Foellmer has rekindled the study of this object by for instance obtaining a novel transport-information inequality.\n\nIn this talk I will first discuss the existence of a closed formula for the specific relative entropy\, depending on the quadratic variation of the involved martingales. Next I will describe an application of this object to prediction markets. Concretely\, David Aldous asked in an open question to determine the 'most exciting game'\, i.e. the prediction market with the highest entropy. With M. Beiglbock we give a concise answer to this question. Finally\, if time permits\, I will give a glimpse to different extensions of this object\, e.g. to higher dimensions or when we replace the role of the relative entropy by a power of the Wasserstein distance\, as recently developed with X. Zhang and co-authors. In many cases\, the strength of a participant in the tournament is given by a score. Perhaps\, the most striking mathematical result on the tournament is Moon’s theorem\, which provides a necessary and sufficient condition for a feasible score sequence via majorization. To give a probabilistic interpretation of Moon’s result\, Aldous and Kolesnik introduced the soccer model\, the existence of which allows a short proof of Moon’s theorem. However\, the existence proof of Aldous and Kolesnik is non-constructive\, leading to the question of a “canonical” construction of the soccer model. The purpose of this talk is to discuss explicit constructions of the soccer model with an additional stochastic ordering constraint\, which can be formulated by martingale transport. Two solutions are given: one is by solving an entropy optimization problem via Sinkhorn’s algorithm\, and the other relies on the idea of shadow couplings. It turns out that both constructions yield the property of strong stochastic transitivity. I will also discuss the nontransitive situations if time permits.
