SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Material World
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition seeks to explore the intersection of two seemingly disparate fields—engineering and the visual arts—through the lens of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE). While both disciplines are extensively studied and practiced\, their convergence is often overlooked. With this body of work\, artist Trevor Balduck aim's to bridge that gap by presenting MSE not only as a technical pursuit but as a source of inspiration and beauty within the realm of artistic expression.\n\nThe eight pieces in this exhibit form a cohesive 2x4 grid measuring 4x8 feet\, guiding viewers through a chronological exploration of the processes involved in materials-focused research. Each work is an abstraction of the actions and methodologies found in a materials lab—transformed into visual representations that capture the elegance inherent in the science behind material properties and manipulation. These pieces illustrate the idea that MSE\, in its essence\, shares a parallel with art: both fields rely on experimentation\, transformation\, and discovery.\n\n\nIn constructing these works\, Trevor employed a range of mediums\, including acrylics\, oils\, metallic paints\, tapes\, and sprays\, which reflect the broad spectrum of materials that artists engage with in their practice. The varied use of materials serves as a direct parallel to the diversity of substances and techniques explored in MSE. Some of the works intentionally mimic specific processes\, such as the creation of grain orientation maps\, material cutting\, and oxidation\, translating technical procedures into visual forms that invite contemplation and interpretation.\n\nUltimately\, this exhibition aims to celebrate the beauty of both the scientific and artistic worlds\, demonstrating that\, at their core\, they are not so different—both are dedicated to understanding\, manipulating\, and giving new form to the materials of the world around us. Through this work\, Trevor hopes to inspire a deeper appreciation for the art inherent in science\, and vice versa\, showing that the boundaries between disciplines are not fixed\, but fluid and full of potential.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andy Ross Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The pieces here are from a large series of works made over the last several years. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. He received a BFA degree from College for Creative Studies\, and an MFA degree from University of Michigan. He has taught photography\, art\, and web design at colleges in California and Michigan. His photographs and collages have been exhibited in schools\, galleries\, and museums across the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Chimera
DESCRIPTION:*Chimera* is an immersive exhibition centered on a newly commissioned film\, also titled *Chimera*\, which fuses elements from Newsome's prior works *Hands Performance* and *Build or Destroy* with a new interquel film that bridges their narratives. This connecting piece explores the origins and journey of the bejeweled figure in flames from *Build or Destroy*\, revealing where they come from and the purpose that led them to Earth. This exhibition reflects a bold shift in Newsome's practice toward sci-fi filmmaking\, layering the architecture of film\, movement\, and world-building to probe themes of identity\, resistance\, and creation. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Elizabeth Boyd-Hartmann Dizik Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This body of work represents a playful exploration of form\, color\, and scale through the lens of cellular shapes. Inspired by the complex patterns of biological life\, the pieces are a celebration of growth\, transformation\, and the joy of experimentation. The use of non-precious materials\, such as wood balls and paint\, allowed for a liberating approach to composition and color\, while the spherical forms and circular panels evoke the look of petri dishes—symbolizing both scientific curiosity and organic development.\nBorn in Detroit\, Elizabeth is a multidisciplinary artist and mother based in the metro Detroit area\, where she works from a studio in her home. With a background in bench jewelry\, her earlier work focused on studio jewelry and was represented by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal.\nElizabeth’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. She holds a BA in Jewelry Design\, with First Class Honours\, from Central Saint Martins in London\, a BFA from the University of Michigan\, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, where she specialized in Metalsmithing and Architecture. Her diverse practice spans jewelry\, sculpture\, and installation\, blending materials and techniques to explore themes of production\, growth\, transformation\, and organic form.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:On the World With the World
DESCRIPTION:*On The World With The World* is an exhibition of 40 artworks by over 24 artists from the Progressive Art Studio Collective (PASC) program. PASC is the first progressive art studio and exhibition program in Detroit and Wayne County dedicated to supporting artists with developmental disabilities and mental health differences to advance artistic practices and build individual careers in the art and design fields.\n\nThis exhibition introduces the PASC program\, and the wide range of styles and ways of working that drive this community of artists\, to the Ann Arbor community. The exhibition is hung salon style\, referencing the communal character of the Osterman Common Room as a social gathering space. It intends to bring engaged people together for conversation on art\, disabilities\, and questions of access in the art world.\n\nPASC embraces the philosophy that creating an artwork is an expressive and communal act whereby an individual communicates their unique perspective on the world with the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Redefining the Crown
DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Bibliophile and the Library: Private-Press Books from the Collection of Bill Heidrich
DESCRIPTION:View beautifully illustrated books that stand as remarkable testaments to the work of twentieth-century small private presses\, which\, in contrast to the trend of mass commercialization\, produced limited editions that celebrated the uniqueness of manual craftsmanship. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Other:Leaves Under the Lens
DESCRIPTION:The leaf surface is a dynamic landscape where tiny\, specialized structures help plants interact with the world around them. Let’s bring this world into view! Join us for an exhibit that highlights the complex and often beautiful anatomy of leaves from the Matthaei collection. Plants throughout the conservatory will be paired with microscope photographs and micro-CT scans that illustrate the otherwise invisible structures that protect leaves from chewing insects\, absorb (or repel!) water\, and even recruit “bodyguards”. You won’t look at leaves the same way again! \n\nThis project is a collaboration between MBGNA and the Weber and Vasconcelos labs in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\, led by PhD student Rosemary Glos.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Data & Research Methods Project: Office Hours
DESCRIPTION:All students are invited to join this free and open data science research project which can be used to supplement your digital research portfolio! On Friday\, February 28th\, we will meet for our nextopen Office Hours session to troubleshoot participant projects. Register and learn more: https://nebigdatahub.org/drm-project/ The Data &amp\; Research Methods project is perfect for beginners who have never worked with a dataset before. This project will also be helpful for advanced data science students who have little experience working with data cleaning or survey building\, desk research\, or data visualizations. The focus of this project is the research process as a whole. It is the first day of your new job as the Junior Data Scientist for the Office of the Mayor in the fictional town of Data Lake\, West Dakota. The population of Data Lake (314\,159) has grown rapidly since 2020 as a number of remote workers have relocated to the mid-size city. Mayor “Tess Ellation” hastasked your office with a project – to learn more about the specific needs of the town’s new remote work population. She asks you to review data on remote workers provided by the U.S. Census Bureau and come back to her with at least two data-driven policy recommendations which will support these new Data Lake families (for example\, a policy recommendationmight be: build new coworking spaces downtown). Your policy recommendations must be informed by data analysis or Mayor Ellation will not adopt them. Participants will clean a dataset\, learn about the ethics of data science research\, do some preliminary analysis\, and develop a workinghypothesis about the impact of remote work policies. You'll build some simple data visualizations\, test your hypotheses\, write up a short conclusion\, and prepare a final report for Mayor Ellation. There are 9 Milestones in this project. There are several Tasks you need to complete within each Milestone. This project should take you no more than 30 hours tofinish. Depending on your skill level\, it may take you less time.In this project\, you will learn using a combination of videos\, articles\, and external data work in spreadsheets. Our team has provided you with several external links and resources which will supplement your learning.Project participants who complete Milestones 1-9 in accordance with these instructions will receive a Certificate of Completion from the NSDC Project Team.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Workshop: Weeping Trees' Tales: Narratives of *Hevea Brasiliensis\,* the Global Rubber Boom\, and the Political Ecology of Empire
DESCRIPTION:This is a workshop associated with a talk that takes place later the same day\, from 4:00pm - 5:30pm.\n\nThis talk traces how rubber-producing plants became a global commodity\, and it emphasizes the disastrous environmental impact and brutal labor exploitation that ensued as a result. I analyze visual and textual narratives of the rubber-producing tree hevea brasiliensis\, and I propose a speculative mode of analysis based on shifting scientific paradigms on plant intelligence and plant behavior. I also discuss the role of key figures like William Jackson Hooker—the English botanist and director of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew who successfully domesticated hevea seedlings\, paving the way for the development of rubber plantations in British colonies in Southeast Asia and\, in the process\, contributing to the collapse of the Amazonian rubber boom—and Roger Casement—the Irish diplomat known for his harrowing accounts of the violent labor regimes in the Congo Free State and the Peruvian Amazon propelled by the rubber economy. The talk further shows the links between botany\, plant commodification\, and imperialism.\n\nOlimpia E. Rosenthal is Associate Professor of Spanish and Portuguese at Indiana University. She is a scholar of colonialism in Latin America\, specializing in literary and cultural production that reflects material practices of domination\, the long-term effects of colonization\, and the ways in which imperial power has been challenged and contested. Her first book\, Race\, Sex and Segregation in Colonial Latin America (Routledge 2022)\, examines the emergence and early development of indigenous segregationist policies in Spanish and Portuguese America. The book shows that segregationist measures influenced the material reorganization of space\, shaped colonial processes of racialization\, and contributed to the politicization of reproductive sex. She has also organized a series of international conferences\, including one on Subaltern Studies at Indiana University’s Gateway Center in India\, and she recently co-organized the Sawyer Seminar Global Slaveries\, Fugitivity\, and the Afterlives of Unfreedom. Her current book project examines the political ecology of the Amazonian rubber boom.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Colorism Multimedia Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Colorism comprises works of video\, still photography\, and sculpture questioning our psychosocial and biological ideas about skin color and treatment of people\, based on skin tones\, including within racial groups. This exhibit asks: What do we know about the root causes of prejudice toward skin color? What can we do to improve interpersonal and structural colorism? To answer these questions\, Prof. Rogério Pinto (Social Work) uses personal and historical materials and interview data to optimize audience interaction\, including critical dialogues around colorism while audiences are viewing the installation or immediately after viewing it.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EIHS Workshop: Exile as Erasure: Reflections on Marginality
DESCRIPTION:From Ovid to Hannah Arendt\, the experience of exile has been reckoned with on multiple temporal and spatial scales. The phenomenon of exile has been a useful lens through which to interrogate systems of power and authority\, and has helped modern scholars redefine identity. Exile\, however\, does not always mean a physical displacement of a people\; despite being “at home\,” those who live\, think\, and practice on the margins of society can experience isolation in one’s own domain that feels akin to exile. Join us and our graduate student panelists in a discussion of the experience of exilic marginality in native and foreign lands.\n\nPanelists:\nTuğçe Akgül (Graduate Student\, Ancient History\, University of Michigan)\nMelissa Itzkowitz (Graduate Student\, Anthropology\, University of Michigan)\nZhaina Meirkhan (Graduate Student\, History\, University of Michigan)\nTalitha Pam (Graduate Student\, Anthropology and History\, University of Michigan)\nAnna Bonnell Freidin (Assistant Professor\, History\, University of Michigan)\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

As the spatial and temporal resolution of simulations increases\, even data storage becomes a critical bottleneck. This talk presents how low-rank tensor decomposition methods can be used to exploit the structure in large-scale data. We showcase a diverse array of applications\, from 3D turbulent Navier-Stokes simulations to Minecraft gameplay videos\, demonstrating the versatility and power of these techniques.\n\nBio: Doruk Aksoy is a 5th year PhD candidate in Aerospace Engineering and Scientific computing at the University of Michigan\, working under the supervision of Prof. Alex Gorodetsky. Prior to joining UM\, he studied Mechanical Engineering at Bogazici University in Istanbul Turkey. During his PhD\, he worked on developing incremental tensor decomposition algorithms to accelerate scientific machine learning through data reduction.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Gilded Towns in a Dead Land: Water\, Warfare\, and the Natural World on Kalymnos
DESCRIPTION:In the dry eastern Aegean\, control of water often corresponds with control of entire economies and\npopulations. Across millennia\, imperial powers have leveraged such control to their advantage\, often\ndramatically transforming landscapes and social relations as a result. On Kalymnos\, fieldwork\ncontinues to find indications of these processes in action. This deforested\, dry island has been\nsubject to many empires\, and\, it appears\, many episodes of ecological devastation. I suggest that\nEarly Medieval Kalymnos can be understood as a ‘post-apocalyptic’ landscape\, in which new\nresources\, new landscapes\, and new social organizations were shaped from a dry and dying earth.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:More than Gray: Reimagining Early America in Full Color
DESCRIPTION:The American past was lived in full color\, but this vibrant history can be easily missed in surviving evidence. You can’t deny that there’s something about a black-and-white photograph that feels… stuffy. With portraits showing people with their shirts buttoned right to the neck and everything in shades of gray and brown\, our imaginations can incline to thinking of the past as a bit staid\, if not downright dull. But look a little closer\, and you’ll see signs that the fashion choices available to those who came before us were more colorful than you might first think. From the fabrics they wore\, to the games they played\, or the books they read\, their world was alive with bright hues. This exhibit invites you to reimagine history with a fuller color palette and picture the vibrancy and joy that just might be hidden behind the unsmiling photographs.\n\nExhibition opening weekdays from 12-4.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Visualizing structural dynamics in the 7SK RNA\, a major regulator of transcription elongation
DESCRIPTION:Structural plasticity is integral to RNA function\; however\, there are currently few methods to quantitatively resolve RNAs that have multiple structural states. Here\, we integrate solution NMR spectroscopy and chemical probing approaches to visualize a two-state conformational ensemble for the central stem-loop 3 (SL3) of 7SK RNA\, a critical element for 7SK RNA function in transcription regulation. We find that the SL3 distal end undergoes slow exchange between two equally populated yet structurally distinct states in both isolated SL3 constructs and full-length 7SK RNA. We rationally designed constructs that lock SL3 into a single state and demonstrate that both NMR and chemical probing data fit to a linear combination of the two states. A survey of vertebrate 7SK RNA sequences shows exquisite sequence dependence on the two-state equilibrium. Moreover\, we find that changing environmental variables such as temperature and ionic strength shifts the equilibrium between the two states. We determine thermodynamic parameters such as divalent cation binding affinities for individual states and find that the two states have strikingly different responses to addition of divalent cations. Together\, these data indicate that the two states significantly differ in their structural and dynamic properties\, which may impact SL3 function in transcription regulation. These results provide new insights into 7SK RNA structural dynamics and demonstrate the utility of integrating chemical probing with NMR spectroscopy to gain quantitative insights into RNA conformational ensembles.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Characterization of Momentum and Heat Flow in Hall Thrusters with Laser Scattering
DESCRIPTION:Hall thrusters are plasma accelerators which produce thrust with a low-temperature\, 𝐸𝐸×𝐵𝐵 plasma ring. Due to their high performance\, they have become the most widely flown form of in-space propulsion. However\, our ability to predict Hall thruster operation and life with simulations is limited by difficulties in modeling the “anomalous” loss of electron confinement due to plasma turbulence. This anomalous transport of electrons limits efficiency and determines the electric field profile\, impacting nearly every aspect of the thruster. Past attempts to measure the anomalous transport have used perturbative plasma probes which alter the thruster operation\, and model-based inference studies do not produce a unique solution.\n\nIn this work\, laser scattering experiments are performed to non-perturbatively characterize the flow of momentum and heat through the Hall thruster plasma. Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) velocimetry is employed to capture the electric field\, while incoherent Thomson scattering (ITS) is used to directly measure the electron properties in a high-power\, magnetically shielded Hall thruster. A method is devised to infer the cross-field transport\, represented by the effective Hall parameter\, directly from these laser measurements. The electron properties are investigated across a parametric map of operating conditions and propellants in one and two dimensions. It is found that electron temperatures are larger than previously expected and the principle of isothermal field lines does not hold. The resulting dataset is used to evaluate theories for turbulent forces and heat fluxes in the Hall thruster and hollow cathode plumes.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: Interindividual differences in a mathematical model of seasonal timing
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Many animals undergo changes in their physiology across seasons in response to day length for survival. This seasonal timing system is conserved across many different species\, including humans\, and is characterized by large interindividual differences. Strong biological responses (e.g. in melatonin duration) to day length have been linked to seasonal affective disorder\, which affects about 5 percent of adults in the U.S. Mathematical models provide a powerful tool to understand the underlying mechanisms driving these responses and their variability across individuals. In this study\, we analyze circadian rhythms in medical interns across the U.S. using data from wearable devices. Our findings reveal that individuals with stronger seasonal responses experience greater circadian misalignment due to environmental changes\, such as shift work. Using physiologically-based mathematical models\, we propose a new perspective on human seasonality\, emphasizing the challenges posed by modern-day environmental factors. Furthermore\, we investigate the dynamical behaviors in the models contributing to the complexity of circadian rhythms and seasonality.\n\nContact: AIM Seminar Organizers

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Andrew Heard\, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute
DESCRIPTION:The rise of oxygen (O2) in Earth’s surface environment during the ‘Great Oxidation Event’ (GOE) occurred about 2.3 billion years ago and set Earth on the path to becoming hospitable for complex life with high metabolic O2 requirements. While proxy records have allowed us to quantify rising atmospheric O2 levels quite effectively during this time period\, we have far fewer constraints on the timing and extent of ocean oxygenation beneath this evolving atmosphere right as the GOE was taking place. In this talk I will present new constraints on the coupled oxygenation of the ocean and atmosphere during the GOE using measurements of stable thallium and vanadium isotopes in Paleoproterozoic shales. These two global ocean paleoredox proxies exhibit subtly distinct responses to the impacts of ocean oxygenation that together allow us to build a nuanced picture of syn-GOE marine redox dynamics. I will present thallium isotopic data that demonstrates an instantaneous coupling between the initial oxygenation of the atmosphere above a canonical threshold value\, and the onset of significant manganese oxide burial in the oceans. Then\, I will show how vanadium isotope constraints indicate marine surface O2 reached levels persistently above quantifiable thresholds within as little as a few million years of the onset of permanent atmospheric oxygenation.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Lecture: Weeping Trees' Tales: Narratives of *Hevea Brasiliensis\,* the Global Rubber Boom\, and the Political Ecology of Empire
DESCRIPTION:This is a lecture associated with a talk that takes place earlier the same day\, from 11:30am - 1:30pm.\n\nThis talk traces how rubber-producing plants became a global commodity\, and it emphasizes the disastrous environmental impact and brutal labor exploitation that ensued as a result. I analyze visual and textual narratives of the rubber-producing tree *hevea brasiliensis*\, and I propose a speculative mode of analysis based on shifting scientific paradigms on plant intelligence and plant behavior. Her first book\, *Race\, Sex and Segregation in Colonial Latin America* (Routledge 2022)\, examines the emergence and early development of indigenous segregationist policies in Spanish and Portuguese America. The book shows that segregationist measures influenced the material reorganization of space\, shaped colonial processes of racialization\, and contributed to the politicization of reproductive sex. She has also organized a series of international conferences\, including one on Subaltern Studies at Indiana University’s Gateway Center in India\, and she recently co-organized the *Sawyer Seminar Global Slaveries\, Fugitivity\, and the Afterlives of Unfreedom*. Her current book project examines the political ecology of the Amazonian rubber boom.

SUMMARY:Performance:Scythian with special guest On The Lash
DESCRIPTION:“When rock star charisma meets celtic dervish fiddling” –Nashville's Music City Roots\n\nNamed after Ukrainian nomads\, Scythian (sith-ee-yin) plays roots music from Celtic\, Eastern European and Appalachian traditions with thunderous energy\, technical prowess\, and storytelling songwriting. The foursome made up of Alexander Fedoryka (Vocals\, Fiddle\, Mandolin\, Harmonica)\, Danylo Fedoryka (Vocals\, Guitar\, Accordion)\, Ethan Dean (Vocals\, Upright and Electric Bass\, Percussion\, Guitar) and Johnny Rees (Vocals\, Drums\, Percussion) brings various influences together to create a conglomerate which is technically precise and steeped in various folk traditions: The classically trained Fedoryka brothers grew up on Ukrainian folk music and bluegrass\, while Ethan Dean was raised on the greats of 60’s & 70’s folk-rock. Lafayette\, LA raised Johnny Rees brings a Cajun backbeat to the Celtic-Americana fusion giving Scythian yet another dimension which keeps audiences entertained and moving. \n\nScythian is coming off its most prolific year in 2020 with over 1\,000 hours of live streams during the Covid Lockdowns\, release of two new albums (Roots & Stones and Quaranstream: The Album) and four new music videos. You have to catch the live show to understand why The Cammel City Dispatch said of their Merlefest performance: “[Scythian gives] no quarter in their quest to entertain and bring a joy to their music that gives it an irony-free\, wide open feel of manic possibility. The playing is technically brilliant\, but it is the energy that carries the day.\"
