SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Material World
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition seeks to explore the intersection of two seemingly disparate fields—engineering and the visual arts—through the lens of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE). While both disciplines are extensively studied and practiced\, their convergence is often overlooked. With this body of work\, artist Trevor Balduck aim's to bridge that gap by presenting MSE not only as a technical pursuit but as a source of inspiration and beauty within the realm of artistic expression.\n\nThe eight pieces in this exhibit form a cohesive 2x4 grid measuring 4x8 feet\, guiding viewers through a chronological exploration of the processes involved in materials-focused research. Each work is an abstraction of the actions and methodologies found in a materials lab—transformed into visual representations that capture the elegance inherent in the science behind material properties and manipulation. These pieces illustrate the idea that MSE\, in its essence\, shares a parallel with art: both fields rely on experimentation\, transformation\, and discovery.\n\n\nIn constructing these works\, Trevor employed a range of mediums\, including acrylics\, oils\, metallic paints\, tapes\, and sprays\, which reflect the broad spectrum of materials that artists engage with in their practice. The varied use of materials serves as a direct parallel to the diversity of substances and techniques explored in MSE. Some of the works intentionally mimic specific processes\, such as the creation of grain orientation maps\, material cutting\, and oxidation\, translating technical procedures into visual forms that invite contemplation and interpretation.\n\nUltimately\, this exhibition aims to celebrate the beauty of both the scientific and artistic worlds\, demonstrating that\, at their core\, they are not so different—both are dedicated to understanding\, manipulating\, and giving new form to the materials of the world around us. Through this work\, Trevor hopes to inspire a deeper appreciation for the art inherent in science\, and vice versa\, showing that the boundaries between disciplines are not fixed\, but fluid and full of potential.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andy Ross Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The pieces here are from a large series of works made over the last several years. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. He received a BFA degree from College for Creative Studies\, and an MFA degree from University of Michigan. He has taught photography\, art\, and web design at colleges in California and Michigan. His photographs and collages have been exhibited in schools\, galleries\, and museums across the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Breaking with Tradition
DESCRIPTION:Artist John Rizzo is exhibiting individual mixed-media sculptures that bridge across art\, design\, and craft. Using a combination of materials that are historically perceived as precious John's work distorts\, disrupts\, and re-contextualizes perceptions of materials and their values. His work is at once \, colorful \, playful \, layered and deeply self-reflective in its personal narrative.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Elizabeth Boyd-Hartmann Dizik Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This body of work represents a playful exploration of form\, color\, and scale through the lens of cellular shapes. Inspired by the complex patterns of biological life\, the pieces are a celebration of growth\, transformation\, and the joy of experimentation. The use of non-precious materials\, such as wood balls and paint\, allowed for a liberating approach to composition and color\, while the spherical forms and circular panels evoke the look of petri dishes—symbolizing both scientific curiosity and organic development.\nBorn in Detroit\, Elizabeth is a multidisciplinary artist and mother based in the metro Detroit area\, where she works from a studio in her home. With a background in bench jewelry\, her earlier work focused on studio jewelry and was represented by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal.\nElizabeth’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. She holds a BA in Jewelry Design\, with First Class Honours\, from Central Saint Martins in London\, a BFA from the University of Michigan\, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, where she specialized in Metalsmithing and Architecture. Her diverse practice spans jewelry\, sculpture\, and installation\, blending materials and techniques to explore themes of production\, growth\, transformation\, and organic form.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Redefining the Crown
DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Bibliophile and the Library: Private-Press Books from the Collection of Bill Heidrich
DESCRIPTION:View beautifully illustrated books that stand as remarkable testaments to the work of twentieth-century small private presses\, which\, in contrast to the trend of mass commercialization\, produced limited editions that celebrated the uniqueness of manual craftsmanship. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Other:Leaves Under the Lens
DESCRIPTION:The leaf surface is a dynamic landscape where tiny\, specialized structures help plants interact with the world around them. Let’s bring this world into view! Join us for an exhibit that highlights the complex and often beautiful anatomy of leaves from the Matthaei collection. Plants throughout the conservatory will be paired with microscope photographs and micro-CT scans that illustrate the otherwise invisible structures that protect leaves from chewing insects\, absorb (or repel!) water\, and even recruit “bodyguards”. You won’t look at leaves the same way again! \n\nThis project is a collaboration between MBGNA and the Weber and Vasconcelos labs in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\, led by PhD student Rosemary Glos.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Colorism Multimedia Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Colorism comprises works of video\, still photography\, and sculpture questioning our psychosocial and biological ideas about skin color and treatment of people\, based on skin tones\, including within racial groups. This exhibit asks: What do we know about the root causes of prejudice toward skin color? What can we do to improve interpersonal and structural colorism? To answer these questions\, Prof. Rogério Pinto (Social Work) uses personal and historical materials and interview data to optimize audience interaction\, including critical dialogues around colorism while audiences are viewing the installation or immediately after viewing it.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Tuesday Seminar Series - Elucidating How Intraspecific Variation Sustains Freshwater Harmful Cyanobacterial Blooms
DESCRIPTION:Microbial population dynamics are regulated by bottom-up (resource availability) and top-down (predation) forces. However\, within-species variation may prompt differential responses to these ecological factors\, helping populations persist through fluctuating environments. Thus\, treating a species as a single entity and using a single trait value to represent population responses cannot entirely capture the specific ecological drivers of population dynamics. Employing strain-level resolution is particularly impactful for studying cyanobacterial bloom dynamics due to the significant genetic diversity within the harmful cyanobacterium Microcystis\, which often dominates these blooms across the globe. Microcystis exhibits optimal growth in high-temperature waters\, explaining why they dominate blooms in the summer. Additionally\, it is aided by anthropogenic nutrient loading and increased resistance to predation relative to other phytoplankton species. However\, within these blooms\, there are spatial and temporal variations in strain composition. What drivers and traits underpin these patterns is not well understood\, yet can impact toxin production and likely both the rise and demise of these blooms. My research aims to parameterize strain-level responses to changing nutrient availability and predatory pressure in Microcystis and test whether these ecological drivers explain strain dynamics in natural contexts. In addition\, arguably the highest intraspecific variation within Microcystis exists in its CRISPR-Cas anti-viral defense system. Yet\, lab assays similar to those I performed for nutrient competition and predator defense are less available for studying virus-Microcystis interactions. Hence\, I will use the coevolutionary history documented in the CRIPSR-Cas system to investigate how and why Microcystis-virus pairs change through time and space. This will help explain how host-virus coevolution occurs when ecological factors constrain host populations. Ultimately\, this research will enhance our understanding of biotic interactions under the influence of nutrient inputs\, improving our capacity to predict and manage harmful cyanobacterial blooms.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:More than Gray: Reimagining Early America in Full Color
DESCRIPTION:The American past was lived in full color\, but this vibrant history can be easily missed in surviving evidence. You can’t deny that there’s something about a black-and-white photograph that feels… stuffy. With portraits showing people with their shirts buttoned right to the neck and everything in shades of gray and brown\, our imaginations can incline to thinking of the past as a bit staid\, if not downright dull. But look a little closer\, and you’ll see signs that the fashion choices available to those who came before us were more colorful than you might first think. From the fabrics they wore\, to the games they played\, or the books they read\, their world was alive with bright hues. This exhibit invites you to reimagine history with a fuller color palette and picture the vibrancy and joy that just might be hidden behind the unsmiling photographs.\n\nExhibition opening weekdays from 12-4.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Lossy Governance: Technologies of Postauthoritarian State Apprehension
DESCRIPTION:With the “Hear\, Here” series\, we aim to facilitate conversations around new research in the humanities. Faculty fellows at the Institute for the Humanities will discuss a part of their current project in a short talk followed by a Q & A session.\n\nAbout this talk:\nSince the earliest implementation of noise-control regulations in 1920s New York City\, the governance of noise has exposed the gulf between the meaning of noise and the materiality of sound. An examination of Taiwan's regulation of low-frequency noise—sounds that are perceptible to the ear but undetectable by decibel meters—suggests that noise remains a contested object of governance through its classification within bureaucratic systems and the handling capacity of infrastructure. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Taiwan's Environmental Protection Administration and legislative records around the time of the 1980s postauthoritarian transition\, I analyze the dialogic encounters between hearing technologies\, an apprehensive state apparatus\, and embodied citizen hearers that amplify the lossy character of postauthoritarian governance. \n\nJennifer Hsieh is a 2024-25 Hunting Family Faculty Fellow at the Institute for the Humanities and Assistant Professor of Anthropology.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Beginning to understand light-mediated Ni catalysis using physical organic techniques and data science
DESCRIPTION:The Bahamonde group harnesses the distinct one-electron chemistry and photochemical reactivity of Ni complexes to generate and trap C-centered radicals enantioselectively and promote C−N reductive eliminations at room temperature. Our excitement for studying these systems stems from the fact that these two apparently unrelated processes are facilitated under almost identical conditions\, but to date the ligand features\, photocatalyst properties\, and subtle reaction condition variations that favor one pathway over the other are not yet understood. Additionally\, to expedite reaction optimization\, the group develops multivariate linear regression models correlating observed enantioselectivity to computed molecular descriptors.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CAS Guest Lecture. The Mormon Colony Scheme in the late Ottoman Empire: Attempts to Alleviate the Abject Poverty facing Armenian Converts to Mormonism (1897-1928)
DESCRIPTION:From the early 1880s till the end of the Ottoman Empire\, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church) sent dozens of missionaries to the Middle East in order to proselyte and establish the Mormon Church in the region as part of its Millenarian aspirations to prepare for the second coming of Jesus Christ through preaching its “Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ” and commence the gathering of Israel. During this almost 40-year period hundreds of Ottoman-Armenians converted to Mormonism with congregations in Aintab\, Aleppo\, Zara\, and Maraş. This presentation discusses the struggles faced by the Mormon Armenian community\, particularly in terms of providing for its basic necessities during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and the community’s attempts to ameliorate these dire circumstances. Deeply impoverished due to awful economic circumstances within the broader Ottoman Empire\, but also exacerbated by persecution from the Ottoman government and local Armenians\, the LDS Armenian community and its Missionary leaders attempted various schemes\, such as carpet weaving\, textile manufacture\, agriculture\, and several abortive attempts to establish a “Mormon Colony” in the Holy Land. This presentation investigates these attempts at self-sufficiency and communalism within the context of growing Western Imperialism in the Middle East and how this intersected with the Millenarian aspirations of the Mormon Missionaries and their Protestant competitors.\n \n Bio:\n Kent Schull is an Associate Professor of Ottoman and Modern Middle East History and Director of both the Center for Middle East and North Africa Studies (CMENAS) and The Ottoman Demographic\, Social\, and Family History Research Group at Binghamton University\, SUNY. He is a twice Fulbright Scholar to Turkey. He is also a book series editor for Edinburgh Studies on the Ottoman Empire. His most recent book is *Missionary to the Middle East: The Journals of Joseph Wilford Booth*\, co-authored with James Toronto and published by Brigham Young University's Religious Studies Center in 2024. His research engages the history of the Ottoman Empire and the modern Middle East\, particularly criminal justice\, Missiology\, and Forced Migration in the MENA region.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact armenianstudies@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Symmetries in Open Quantum Systems: Autonomous Error Correction and Quantum Metrology
DESCRIPTION:Hybrid Lecture: Join us on Zoom if you can't come in person: https://umich.zoom.us/j/7650373624\n\nQuantum systems are fundamental to developing new technologies and studying fundamental science. However\, current systems cannot be fully isolated from the environment\, which can introduce detrimental noise effects that destroy useful quantum features in these open quantum systems. Nevertheless\, in some circumstances it is possible to instead utilize the environment as a resource via symmetries. Although the implications of symmetries in Hamiltonian systems are well-understood\, in open quantum systems the situation is more complex. In this talk\, I will show how two classes of symmetry exist for open quantum systems\, “weak” and “strong”\, and I will demonstrate the utility of strong symmetries via two examples. First\, I will identify connections between steady state phase transitions and autonomous error correction\, a form of quantum error correction in which active measurement and feedback is no longer needed. Second\, I will show how strong symmetries allow for the preparation of highly-entangled collective states known as spin-squeezed states\, which can be experimentally realized in optical cavity systems for quantum-enhanced metrology.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Colloquium Seminar: Dynamical algebraic combinatorics and webs
DESCRIPTION:Many combinatorial objects with strikingly good enumerative formulae also have remarkable dynamical behavior and underlying algebraic structure. In this talk\, we consider the promotion action on certain rectangular tableaux and explain its small\, predictable order by reinterpreting promotion as a rotation in disguise. We show how the search for this visual explanation of combinatorial dynamics led to the solution of an algebraic problem involving web bases and a generalization of the six-vertex model of statistical physics. We find that this framework includes several unexpected combinatorial objects of interest: alternating sign matrices\, plane partitions\, and their symmetry classes (joint with Ashleigh Adams). This talk is based primarily on joint work with Christian Gaetz\, Stephan Pfannerer\, Oliver Pechenik\, and Joshua P. Swanson.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:CREES Film Screening and Discussion. \"Gulmira’s Fairy Tales\" by Gluklya
DESCRIPTION:Gluklya\, a pioneer of Russian performance art\, was invited by the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art\, Moscow to participate in artistic research on post-Soviet colonialism. Her film\, Gulmira’s Fairy Tales (2022)\, is the collaborative result of the stories Gluklya gathered from female garment workers during her visits to Kyrgyzstan in 2021-22.\n\nThe compelling performance by actress Gulmira Tursunbaeva\, who plays the role of a TV host telling feminist fairy tales\, cuts to scenes of dance and street performance in Bishkek. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Penny Stamps Speaker Series - Gluklya
DESCRIPTION:Gluklya\, a pioneering figure in Russian performance art\, was invited by the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow to explore post-Soviet colonialism through artistic research. Her film\, Gulmira’s Fairy Tales (2022)\, is the result of a collaborative process\, weaving together stories from female garment workers she met during her visits to Kyrgyzstan in 2021–22.Featuring a powerful performance by actress Gulmira Tursunbaeva as a TV host sharing feminist fairy tales\, the film intersperses storytelling with evocative scenes of dance and street performance in Bishkek. In contrast to the Soviet era’s regulated labor conditions\, today’s garment industry prioritizes efficiency and output over worker well-being\, with no limits on work hours. The film’s narratives draw from the personal experiences of seamstresses\, materials from the human rights organization Open Line\, and archival records from the Moscow Archive of Female Workers in the USSR.Following the screening\, Gluklya will join CREES Director Elizabeth King\, associate professor of health behavior &amp\; health equity and global public health\, and CREES Faculty Associate Irina Aristarkhova\, professor at the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design and the Digital Studies Institute\, for a discussion.Gluklya further explores these themes in her talk\, which takes place Wednesday\, March 12\, 2025 from noon to 1:20 pm in room 555 of Weiser Hall. Gluklya will share her approach of using imagination and play to explore the harsh realities and human side of labor experiences among female garment workers.Additionally\, her exhibition Threading the Needle: Vestiges of Colonialism and Femininity (Dianne Beal\, Curator)will be on view on March 12\, 2025\, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM in room 547 of Weiser Hall. Through film\, sculpture\, watercolors\, and felt tapestries\, Gluklya examines the experiences of Kyrgyz textile workers\, exposing the intersections of gender\, labor\, and colonial legacies.\nIn partnership with the Center for Russian\, East European\, &amp\; Eurasian Studies. \nSeries presenting partners: Detroit PBS\, ALL ARTS\, and PBS Books. Media partner: Michigan Public.

SUMMARY:Performance:Marcia Ball
DESCRIPTION:“Rollicking\, playful\, good-time blues and intimate\, reflective balladry…her songs ring with emotional depth.” –Rolling Stone\n\n“Fifty years have passed in a flash\,” says Texas-born\, Louisiana-raised pianist\, songwriter and vocalist Marcia Ball of her long and storied career. Ball\, the 2018 Texas State Musician Of The Year\, has won worldwide fame and countless fans for her ability to ignite a full-scale roadhouse rhythm and blues party every time she takes the stage. Her rollicking Texas boogies\, swampy New Orleans ballads and groove-laden Gulf Coast blues have made her a one-of-a-kind favorite with music lovers all over the world. \n\nWith each new release\, her reputation as a profoundly soulful singer\, a boundlessly talented pianist\, and a courageous\, inventive songwriter continues to grow. Her love of the road has led to years of soul-satisfying performances at festivals\, concert halls and clubs. The New York Times says\, “Marcia Ball plays two-fisted New Orleans barrelhouse piano and sings in a husky\, knowing voice about all the trouble men and women can get into on the way to a good time.” The Houston Chronicle says simply\, “She’s as perfect as an artist can be.”
