DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. DESCRIPTION:Gluklya’s work is a powerful example of socially engaged art at the intersections of gender\, class\, and cultural identity. By focusing on experiences of female textile workers in Kyrgyzstan\, the artist explores the often-overlooked stories of women affected by Soviet and post-Soviet colonialism. \"Threading the Needle: Vestiges of Colonialism and Femininity\" retells their stories using a diverse range of media — film\, sculpture\, watercolors\, and felt tapestries. Unfolding the implications of economic and societal pressures on women\, Gluklya explores issues of poverty\, isolation\, and exploitation among the garment workers.\n   \n   Personal stories are woven into a broader social context — such as the legacy of the \"Likbez\" (liquidation of illiteracy) campaign among women in Central Asia during Soviet rule and entrenched patriarchal traditions\, like \"Ala Kachuu\" (bride-kidnapping). This dynamic — where colonization and modernization intertwine the individual lives they touch — raises questions about cultural identity and the ethical borders of decolonized research.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by CREES alumna Dianne Beal (BA REES '79). DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Material World
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition seeks to explore the intersection of two seemingly disparate fields—engineering and the visual arts—through the lens of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE). While both disciplines are extensively studied and practiced\, their convergence is often overlooked. With this body of work\, artist Trevor Balduck aim's to bridge that gap by presenting MSE not only as a technical pursuit but as a source of inspiration and beauty within the realm of artistic expression.\n\nThe eight pieces in this exhibit form a cohesive 2x4 grid measuring 4x8 feet\, guiding viewers through a chronological exploration of the processes involved in materials-focused research. Each work is an abstraction of the actions and methodologies found in a materials lab—transformed into visual representations that capture the elegance inherent in the science behind material properties and manipulation. These pieces illustrate the idea that MSE\, in its essence\, shares a parallel with art: both fields rely on experimentation\, transformation\, and discovery.\n\n\nIn constructing these works\, Trevor employed a range of mediums\, including acrylics\, oils\, metallic paints\, tapes\, and sprays\, which reflect the broad spectrum of materials that artists engage with in their practice. The varied use of materials serves as a direct parallel to the diversity of substances and techniques explored in MSE. Some of the works intentionally mimic specific processes\, such as the creation of grain orientation maps\, material cutting\, and oxidation\, translating technical procedures into visual forms that invite contemplation and interpretation.\n\nUltimately\, this exhibition aims to celebrate the beauty of both the scientific and artistic worlds\, demonstrating that\, at their core\, they are not so different—both are dedicated to understanding\, manipulating\, and giving new form to the materials of the world around us. Through this work\, Trevor hopes to inspire a deeper appreciation for the art inherent in science\, and vice versa\, showing that the boundaries between disciplines are not fixed\, but fluid and full of potential.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andy Ross Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The pieces here are from a large series of works made over the last several years. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. He received a BFA degree from College for Creative Studies\, and an MFA degree from University of Michigan. He has taught photography\, art\, and web design at colleges in California and Michigan. His photographs and collages have been exhibited in schools\, galleries\, and museums across the United States.

DESCRIPTION:This body of work represents a playful exploration of form\, color\, and scale through the lens of cellular shapes. Inspired by the complex patterns of biological life\, the pieces are a celebration of growth\, transformation\, and the joy of experimentation. The use of non-precious materials\, such as wood balls and paint\, allowed for a liberating approach to composition and color\, while the spherical forms and circular panels evoke the look of petri dishes—symbolizing both scientific curiosity and organic development.\nBorn in Detroit\, Elizabeth is a multidisciplinary artist and mother based in the metro Detroit area\, where she works from a studio in her home. With a background in bench jewelry\, her earlier work focused on studio jewelry and was represented by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal.\nElizabeth’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. She holds a BA in Jewelry Design\, with First Class Honours\, from Central Saint Martins in London\, a BFA from the University of Michigan\, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, where she specialized in Metalsmithing and Architecture. Her diverse practice spans jewelry\, sculpture\, and installation\, blending materials and techniques to explore themes of production\, growth\, transformation\, and organic form.

DESCRIPTION:“RAW” is a 2024 printmaking portfolio featuring 25 15”x20” works on paper by a diverse group of primarily student artists\, organized by Professor Endi Poskovic of the Stamps Printmedia program. The hand-pulled prints in the set\, which has never been exhibited before\, span media from colorful laser cut woodblock prints\, to lithography\, to copper plate etching. The newly formed Stamps Student-led Exhibitions Committee (SEC) will curate and rotate selections of these prints in alignment with the portfolio’s theme—where time and effort transform raw potential.

The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. SUMMARY:Presentation:EEB Student Dissertation Defense: Causes and consequences of disease outbreaks in aquatic environments
DESCRIPTION:Libby Davenport\, EEB PhD student\, presents their dissertation defense.\n\nAbstract: Disease outbreaks of environmentally transmitted parasites require that susceptible hosts encounter infective transmission stages (spores) distributed within environmental reservoirs and become infected. However\, we have limited empirical data about how changes in parasite environmental spore abundance influence disease dynamics. This is concerning because many environmentally transmitted parasites (e.g.\, chronic wasting disease\, white-nose syndrome\, anthrax\, etc.) pose major threats to human\, livestock\, and wildlife health. Moreover\, factors such as resource availability may affect the infection probability of a parasite during an encounter with a host as well as impacts of that parasite on exposed or infected hosts. Chronic sublethal impacts of parasites on host traits related to gut function may have consequences that scale up to affect ecosystem processes\, such as primary productivity and biogeochemical cycling\, although these potential impacts of parasitism remain relatively unexplored. My dissertation combines a multi-faceted six-month field study with a series of laboratory experiments to address the following questions: How does parasite spore abundance in the environment change over time and space? What is the relationship between disease outbreaks and spore abundance in the environment? How does resource availability affect infection success and impacts of a microsporidian parasite on its dominant grazer host?\nIn my dissertation research\, I used the freshwater invertebrate host Daphnia dentifera and five of its naturally occurring environmentally transmitted parasites to answer these questions. During my six-month field study\, I quantified spore abundance of the five parasites at every meter of the water column in the deep basin of six lakes in southeastern Michigan every two weeks using a digital PCR assay that I designed. Field-collected spore abundance data revealed that environmental spore abundance changed by several orders of magnitude over time and space and that lake basin shape and the strength of seasonal thermal stratification affected the evenness of spore distributions\, altering host-parasite encounter rates. When examining the relationship between environmental spore concentration and disease outbreaks\, I found significant time lags between the peaks in environmental spore concentration and infection prevalence\, which may have been influenced by parasite traits.\nIn my laboratory experiments\, I found that a microsporidian parasite was more likely to infect hosts when resources were abundant and this parasite significantly reduced grazing rates of infected hosts (although this impact was present at different times depending on resource availability). Thus\, the parasite-induced reduction in grazing rate could have broad impacts on lake food webs since the host is a dominant grazer\; these results set the stage for further investigation of how and when effects of parasitism scale up to influence higher-order ecological phenomena.\nOverall\, my dissertation contains one of the most comprehensive field studies examining the dynamic relationship between disease outbreaks and spore abundance in the environment and identifies resource-dependent impacts of a parasite on host density and traits that may have broader ecological consequences.\n\nThis is a hybrid event. \nTo join via Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/94783248528\nPasscode: daphnia

Join us for an exhibit that highlights the complex and often beautiful anatomy of leaves from the Matthaei collection. Plants throughout the conservatory will be paired with microscope photographs and micro-CT scans that illustrate the otherwise invisible structures that protect leaves from chewing insects\, absorb (or repel!) water\, and even recruit “bodyguards”. DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

DESCRIPTION:Standard approaches to entanglement entropy assume a factorization of the Hilbert space along subregions. All QFTs have UV obstructions to this factorization\, requiring regularization. Gauge theories have additional\, global/IR obstructions. The treatment in the existing literature for entanglement entropy in gauge theories involves a by-hand path integral over non-dynamical superselection sectors\, labeled by edge modes. I will describe a new approach that treats the edge modes dynamically\, incorporating them into a single phase space\, and allows the entanglement to be written as a genuine thermal trace on a subregion. I will provide checks in all dimensions by comparing with recent results on sphere partition functions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES Noon Lecture. Artist’s Talk on Threading the Needle: Vestiges of Colonialism and Femininity
DESCRIPTION:Gluklya (Natalya Pershina Yakimanskaya) will present her research on the exploitation of women working in the textile and fashion industries of Kyrgyzstan\, related to her exhibit on display in the International Institute’s gallery from March 11 to May 4.\n   \n   In 2020\, the artist was invited by Moscow’s Garage Museum of Contemporary Art to participate in the research laboratory Space 1520\, devoted to Soviet and post-Soviet colonialism. Upon discovering that Kyrgyzstan is a major player in the textile industries that produce garments mainly for export to the Russian market\, Gluklya traveled to Bishkek. She was allowed to visit factories and meet with textile workers. The stories she heard\, and conditions she encountered\, profoundly changed her view of reality.\n   \n   Returning to Amsterdam\, the title of her monumental exhibition at Framer Framed\, \"To Those Who Have No Time To Play\,\" evolved from her visits to the home of the seamstress Rahat. Shocked by the living conditions she witnessed\, her well thought-out and researched questions were no longer relevant. Instead\, the artist engaged Rahat by asking how she played as a child.\n   \n   In this lecture\, Gluklya will share her approach of using imagination and play to explore the harsh realities and human side of labor experiences among female garment workers.\n   \n   Gluklya (Natalia Pershina-Yakimanskaya) is a pioneer of Russian feminist performance art\, and she lives and works in Amsterdam. She uses installation\, performance\, video\, watercolor\, text\, and research to develop a concept of “fragility” — a subject that should be interpreted not in the sense of “beauty\,” but as “invisible strength.” In her projects\, she addresses her characters’ personal stories\, analyzing them and revealing the conflict between political systems and one’s inner world.\n\n   Her work process is playful\, and her studio often turns into a meeting place where people work together on conceptualizing clothes and making other useable artistic items. Gluklya’s oeuvre speaks of indignation and hope. With her projects she proposes poetic ways to resist injustice and to find empowerment.\n   \n   At the 56th Venice Biennale\, Gluklya presented \"Clothes in Demonstration against the False Election of Vladimir Putin\" (2011 – 2015) in the exhibition \"All the World’s Futures\,\" curated by Okwui Enwezor. The installation documents hope\, dreams\, and traumas of people who went into the streets in 2011-15 to demonstrate against the oppressive government. For her research for \"Two Natures of Colonialism: Russian and European/Lives and Work of Oppressed Women\,\" Gluklya visited Indonesia and Kyrgyzstan from 2019-2022. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EPIC Pathways Leadership Series - Prioritizing and Evaluating Care for Adults with Autism
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Nicolaidis practices and teaches hospital-based internal medicine at Oregon Health and Science University and serves as a Professor in the School of Social Work at Portland State University.  Most of her research uses participatory approaches to improve the health and healthcare of marginalized populations\, including autistic adults\, people with other disabilities\, racial and ethnic minorities\, people with substance use disorders or chronic pain\, and trauma survivors.\n\nShe is the co-founder and co-director of the Academic Autism Spectrum Partnership in Research and Education (AASPIRE)\, an international academic-community partnership that uses community based participatory research to address the priorities of autistic adults. She has led a series of National Institute of Health (NIH)-funded AASPIRE studies on healthcare for autistic adults and has created the AASPIRE Healthcare Toolkit for use in primary care settings. She is currently leading a large NIH-funded AASPIRE R01 project to develop the AutPROM Toolbox\, a set of patient-reported outcome measures to evaluate services for autistic adults.  She also is the founding Editor-in-Chief of a new peer-reviewed journal\, Autism in Adulthood and directs the Social Determinants of Health Initiative at Portland State University.\n\nThe EPIC Pathways Leadership Series is a speaker series hosted by the University of Michigan School of Nursing that welcomes leaders in the fields of nursing and healthcare to share their expertise and engage members of the UM community in critical thinking\, learning\, and dialogue about topics in health equity. SUMMARY:Presentation:Global South Gender & Sexuality Collective: Violent Intimacies: The Trans Everyday and the Making of an Urban World
DESCRIPTION:In *Violent Intimacies*\, Aslı Zengin traces how trans people in Turkey creatively negotiate and resist everyday cisheteronormative violence. Drawing on the history and ethnography of the trans communal life in Istanbul\, Zengin develops an understanding of cisheteronormative violence that expands beyond sex\, gender and sexuality. She shows how cisheteronormativity forms a connective tissue among neoliberal governmentality\, biopolitical and necropolitical regimes\, nationalist religiosity\, and authoritarian management of social difference. As much as trans people are shaped by these processes\, they also transform them in intimate ways. Transness in Turkey provides an insightful site for developing new perspectives on statecraft\, securitization and surveillance\, family and kin-making\, urban geography\, and political life. Zengin offers the concept of violent intimacies to theorize this entangled world of the trans everyday where violence and intimacy are co-constitutive. Violent intimacies emerge from trans people’s everyday interactions with the police\, religious and medical institutions\, street life\, family and kinship\, and trans femicides and funerals. The dynamic of violent intimacies prompts new understandings of violence and intimacy and the world-making struggles of trans people in a Middle Eastern context.\n\nAsli Zengin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Women’s\, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. Her first book\, Intimacy of Power: Women Prostitutes\, Sex Work and Violence in Istanbul (Iktidarin Mahremiyeti: Istanbul’da Hayat Kadinlari\, Seks Isciligi ve Siddet)\, was published in Turkish. Her new book\, Violent Intimacies: The Trans Everyday and the Making of an Urban World\, was recently published by Duke University Press and won the 2024 Ruth Benedict Prize from the Association for Queer Anthropology. Dr. Zengin's research lies at the intersection of ethnography of sex/gender non-conforming lives and deaths\; medico-legal regimes of sex\, gender\, and sexuality\; critical studies of violence and sovereignty\; politics of mourning and grief\; and transnational feminist and LGBTQ movements in the Middle East\, with a special focus on Turkey.

DESCRIPTION:MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series\nMarch 12\, 2025\n12:00-1:00 pm EDT\n\nIn person\, Room G300 Perry Building\, and via Zoom.\nThe Zoom call will be locked 10 minutes after the start of the presentation. \n\nStatistics is a Core Competency for Sound Health Policy \n\nThe American Statistical Association vision imagines a world that relies on data and statistical thinking to drive discovery and inform decisions.  We know the challenges to attaining this vision are significant\, so collaboration is key.  As a statistician working to inform policy and decision making\, I know it will take collaboration across disciplines to address society’s biggest challenges—e.g.\, pandemic recovery\, climate change\, precision medicine\, education reform\, or criminal justice. In an era of data ubiquity and rapid analysis\, statisticians and data scientists are positioned to play a central role across application areas.  The gold standard for public policy is evidence-based decision making—deliberate and strategic application of real facts and research-supported principles that yields objective evidence. \n\nStatistical science is the foundation for evidence-based decision making.  As an interdisciplinary science\, it has applications to every field imaginable\, making statisticians uniquely qualified to lend their expertise in multiple policy domains.  Effectively informing policy requires becoming involved early in the design phase\; understanding the nature of the issue\; and knowing how to communicate\, educate\, and explain.  In this talk\, I will provide multiple examples from health policy to highlight both valuable contributions made by statistical scientists and lessons learned – and how this model of collaboration is relevant across other fields and application areas.  I will suggest areas of improvement based on lessons learned. And extrapolating from these successes\, I will suggest areas for future contributions in which the stakes are very high and involving statistics will be essential. \n\nMadhumita (Bonnie) Ghosh-Dastidar is head of the Statistics Group and a senior statistician and data scientist at RAND\, a nonprofit organization that improves policy and decision making through research and analysis. Her policy applications are focused on health and social justice.  Specific examples include evaluation of neighborhood-level intervention to improve diet\, health\; cluster randomized trials to improve outcomes among HIV positive persons\; and measurement or surveillance in health disparity. Her statistical expertise includes design\, sampling\, measurement\, missing data\, evaluations\, and longitudinal/multilevel modeling. Ghosh-Dastidar's major studies include assessment of sexual assault and harassment in the U.S. military and the first Singapore mental health study to assess national prevalence. She is the 2024 President of the American Statistical Association (ASA)\, the largest professional organization for statisticians and data scientists.  She is an elected fellow of the ASA. The ASA Committee on Women in Statistics recognized her work in statistics and data science by naming her \"Top 20 Woman in Statistics and Data Science\" (March 2019. Ghosh-Dastidar received her Ph.D. and M.A. in statistics from Penn State\, University Park\, PA\; she also holds a dual Bachelor's in mathematics and computer science from Albright College\, Reading\, PA.

DESCRIPTION:University Carillonist Tiffany Ng performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

DESCRIPTION:Lasers and quantum science have fueled revolutionary developments in atomic\, molecular\, and fundamental physics. Scaling up quantum systems to ever increasing sizes promises to open new discovery opportunities. Quantum technology has brought tens of thousands of atoms to minute-long coherence times for atomic clocks\, and it is now also knocking on the door of nuclear physics. The combination of ultrafast optics and precision metrology has built us new tools such as a vacuum ultraviolet frequency comb\, enabling the recent breakthrough of quantum-state-resolved laser spectroscopy of thorium-229 nuclear transition. This unification of precision metrology and nuclear physics sparks new ideas for testing fundamental physics and promises nuclear-based clock with billions of nuclear absorbers.

Trans Technologies describes what happens when trans people take technology design into their own hands. Oliver L. DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nInertial confinement fusion research has been anchored in the Stockpile Stewardship program for decades. National laboratories and universities have partnered to drive fusion research at the National Ignition Facility through a highly complex National Diagnostics roadmap. Los Alamos National Laboratory has played a crucial role through unique expertise in nuclear diagnostics (neutron and gamma imaging\, gamma reaction history measurements\, radio-chemical analyses). These diagnostics have taken tremendous development effort and expertise\, providing crucial information on fusion implosions (implosion asymmetries\, bang time\, contaminant mix). Now\, since the achievement of ignition and energy gain on the NIF\, the US fusion landscape is changing – private companies are emerging with the goal of realizing fusion energy. The DOE Fusion Energy Science program is encouraging private-public partnership to advance fusion energy for the US. While a fusion power plant will likely need a minimal suite of diagnostics\, diagnostics will be needed on the path to a pilot plant and diagnostic expertise will be needed to develop a minimally viable set for a plant. This talk explores how the long history of diagnostic expertise at LANL can enable fusion energy research while simultaneously benefitting from a drive for innovation and an energized workforce.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nVerena Geppert-Kleinrath is Deputy Group Leader of the P-1 Dynamic Imaging and Radiography group in Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Physics Division\, managing over 60 scientists\, engineers\, postdocs\, students\, technologists and technicians. She also pursues nuclear imaging for inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and is excited about the prospect of fusion energy.  She and her team have developed 3D neutron and gamma imaging for the National Ignition Facility (NIF). Her nuclear imaging diagnostics have delivered key performance metrics for high-yield ICF implosions on NIF – ultimately leading to the first successful ignition shots.  She has authored over 60 publications in with over 2500 citations. For her successes in ICF diagnostics she has received the Department of Energy Secretary’s Honors Award three times and the American Physical Society’s John Dawson Award for Excellence in Plasma Physics Research. She serves as the vice-chair for the American Physical Society 4 Corners Section. She has been at LANL since 2012 when she started as a graduate student. DESCRIPTION:The Hodge diamond of a smooth projective complex variety exhibits fundamental symmetries\, arising from Poincaré duality and the purity of Hodge structures. In the case of a singular projective variety\, the complexity of the singularities is closely related to the symmetries of the analogous Hodge–Du Bois diamond. For example\, the failure of the first nontrivial Poincaré duality is reflected in the defect of factoriality. Based on joint work with Mihnea Popa\, I will discuss how local and global conditions on singularities influence the topology of algebraic varieties.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  Different mutational processes operative in cancer and other diseases leave distinct 'signatures' on the DNA. Mutational signature analysis is an attempt to deconvolve the mutational patterns from DNA sequencing data to identify the underlying mutagenic processes. I will describe the methodological advances we have made in recent years as well as their applications to the detection of patients with homologous recombination deficiency (HRD)\, who may be considered for PARP inhibitor therapy. In last part\, I will share a few insights I have gained about research productivity.\n\nShort Bio:\nDr. Park is a Professor of Biomedical Informatics at Harvard Medical School and the director of its Bioinformatics and Integrative Genomics PhD program. His research group specializes in computational and statistical analysis of large-scale DNA sequencing data to understand genetic and epigenetic mechanisms related to disease processes. Originally trained in applied mathematics (B.A.\, Harvard\; Ph.D.\, Caltech)\, he was introduced to molecular biology and genetics during his postdoctoral studies in biostatistics. His laboratory has developed several algorithms for genome analysis\, especially for identification of structural alterations from whole-genome sequencing data\, and has made substantial contributions to consortium projects such as The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA)\, Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE)\, and Brain Somatic Mosaicism Network\, and 4D Nucleome (4DN).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Probability and Analysis Seminar: A glimpse of universality in critical planar lattice models
DESCRIPTION:Many models of statistical mechanics are defined on a lattice\, yet they describe behaviour of objects in our seemingly isotropic world. It is then natural to ask why\, in the small mesh size limit\, the directions of the lattice disappear. Physicists' answer to this question is partially given by the Universality hypothesis\, which roughly speaking states that critical properties of a physical system do not depend on the lattice or fine properties of short-range interactions but only depend on the spatial dimension and the symmetry of the possible spins. Justifying the reasoning behind the universality hypothesis mathematically seems virtually impossible and so other ideas are needed for a rigorous derivation of universality even in the simplest of setups. \nIn this talk I will explain some ideas behind the recent result which proves rotational invariance of the FK-percolation model. In doing so\, we will see how rotational invariance is related to universality among a certain one-dimensional family of planar lattices and how the latter can be proved using exact integrability of the six-vertex model using Bethe ansatz. \nBased on joint works with Hugo Duminil-Copin\, Karol Kozlowski\, Ioan Manolescu\, Mendes Oulamara\, and Tatiana Tikhonovskaia.

This lecture will bring the political logic of his government into view. The singular accomplishment of the Amin regime was this:  to transform the boring\, technical work of administration into a thrilling battle for liberation. Amin’s regime invited ordinary Ugandans to see themselves as front-line soldiers in a war against cultural and racial outsiders. DESCRIPTION:Neural networks have recently emerged as a powerful tool in quantum chemistry\, particularly for computing the ground state energy of large molecules. This approach\, known as neural quantum states\, represents the wave function of a molecular Hamiltonian using modern machine learning architectures. Optimized for GPU hardware\, these methods aim to compete with and surpass traditional techniques. In this talk\, I will introduce the mathematical foundations of neural quantum states and discuss our work in scaling these algorithms to thousands of GPU nodes on high-performance computing (HPC) systems\, enabling simulations of unprecedented size and complexity.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Uniform-in-time weak propagation of chaos for consensus-based optimization
DESCRIPTION:We study the uniform-in-time weak propagation of chaos for the consensus-based optimization (CBO) method on a bounded searching domain. We apply the methodology for studying long-time behaviors of interacting particle systems developed in the work of Delarue and Tse (arXiv:2104.14973). Our work shows that the weak error has order O(N−1) uniformly in time\, where N denotes the number of particles. The main strategy behind the proofs are the decomposition of the weak errors using the linearized Fokker-Planck equations and the exponential decay of their Sobolev norms. Consequently\, our result leads to the joint convergence of the empirical distribution of the CBO particle system to the Dirac-delta distribution at the global minimizer in population size and running time in Wasserstein-type metrics.\n\nJoint work Erhan Bayraktar and Ibrahim Ekren.

Critical acclaim followed\, The Irish Echo describing the band as the “the hottest Irish acoustic band on the planet”\; MOJO magazine named the band \"the new gods of Irish music\,” adding that “nobody since the Bothies has wielded such a thrilling rhythmic underlay.” Billboard raved that “anybody who listens can’t help but find them contagious.” \n\nHaving since sold over a quarter of a million records and performed over 2\,500 shows across 36 countries\, Lunasa has won multiple awards and become one of the most influential bands in the history of traditional music. DESCRIPTION:A Tribute to Elmore James\n\nGeorge Bedard will continue his History of American Music series at The Ark on August 16th.This year’s first set will begin a new tradition of exploring many different genres from a particular year – in this case 1959. The second set will be a tribute to the great slide guitarist and blues singer Elmore James. \n\n“Midwest musicians all know the legendary guitarist George Bedard. He is the man. Where else am I going to hear authentic rockabilly\, much less pure blues these days as his latest album provides? Bedard’s music has been in my head for decades and I love it. George is a national treasure”. (Michael Erlewine\, Founder of the All-Music Guide)\n\n“Variety and craft have always been the hallmarks of Bedard’s style. While his music is rooted in what might now be called traditional rock and roll\, he’s a product of the Chicago blues players whom he heard in the clubs and at the Ann Arbor Blues & Jazz Festival. His artistry extends to many streams of twentieth-century music: country\, pop\, and a remarkable amount of jazz in which he artfully reduces ensemble arrangements to the dimensions of a small rock band. As the house guitarist on the Cincinnati Blues Festival’s Arches stage\, he has accompanied dozens of blues\, jazz\, and boogie pianists from all over the world.
