External electric fields are used to tune elastic collision\, suppress reactive loss\, produce sharp interaction resonance\, and control evaporative cooling. Confining molecules in optical traps with tunable spatial geometries allows realization of stereo chemistry and tunable many-body spins for quantum magnetism. Hamiltonian engineering is paving the way for production of entangled molecules that will benefit precision measurement. \n\nBio:\nJun Ye is a Fellow of JILA\, a Fellow of NIST\, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. This paper examines how metropolitan fragmentation impacts the provision of commuting infrastructure and the spatial distribution of economic activity. I develop a quantitative spatial model in which municipalities compete for residents and workers by investing in commuting infrastructure to maximize net land value within their jurisdictions. In equilibrium\, relative to a metropolitan planner\, municipalities underinvest in areas near their boundaries and overinvest in areas away from the boundary. Central municipalities tend to underinvest more\, as higher commuting costs encourage households to move closer to where they work\, thereby increasing land values in central areas. Decentralized investment results in higher cross-jurisdiction commuting costs\, more dispersed employment\, and more polycentric patterns of economic activity. I estimate the model using data from Santiago\, Chile\, and find substantial gains from centralizing investment decisions. Centralization allocates infrastructure more efficiently and increases aggregate expenditure on infrastructure. This study explores the intersection of mental health and engineering education\, specifically focusing on the role that professors and peers play in influencing the mental health of undergraduate engineering students. This seminar will present on qualitative interview data collected through a single-institution study. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to identify how professors and peers influence undergraduate engineering students’ self-reported mental health.\n\nBiography: Nosakhare Idiaghe is a third-year doctoral candidate of Engineering Education Research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln\, where he is also pursuing a master’s in engineering management. His research focuses on bridging the gap between academic training and workplace expectations\, exploring how students’ educational experiences shape their transition and experiences in professional engineering roles. His work spans multiple areas\, including engineering students’ well-being\, undergraduate research experiences\, and the intercultural competence development of graduate students. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. The first part studies random matrices from the Laguerre beta ensembles. We prove that when a Laguerre matrix is shifted by a scalar multiple of the identity—where the scalar is near the edge of the Mar\v{c}enko–Pastur law—the logarithm of its determinant exhibits Gaussian fluctuations. Additionally\, we establish that this result extends to the Laguerre Orthogonal and Laguerre Unitary Ensembles under a relaxed assumption on the shift. This edge central limit theorem has applications in statistical testing of critically spiked sample covariance matrices\, and in analyzing free energy fluctuations of bipartite spherical spin glasses at critical temperature. The second part examines the free energy fluctuations of the bipartite spherical Sherrington–Kirkpatrick model\, an extension of the spherical Sherrington–Kirkpatrick model by incorporating heterogeneity. Previous work by Baik and Lee shows that at non-critical temperatures\, the free energy exhibits Gaussian fluctuations at high temperatures and Tracy–Widom fluctuations at low temperatures. We focus on the critical temperature case and demonstrate that within a vanishing window around criticality\, the fluctuations are given by the sum of independent Gaussian and Tracy–Widom random variables. A key component of our analysis is the central limit theorem for Laguerre matrices established in the first part of the thesis. Although ubiquitous in classical active systems\, implementing such non-reciprocal interactions in solid-state systems has remained challenging\, as the known quantum schemes require precise control over the system on a single-site level. Here\, we propose a novel dissipation-engineering protocol to induce non-reciprocal interactions in solid-state platforms with light\, which we expect to be achievable with state-of the-art experimental techniques. Focusing on magnetic metals for concreteness\, we show microscopically that a light injection that introduces the decay channel to a virtually excited state gives rise to non-reciprocal interactions between localized spins. One can even realize a situation where spin A tries to align with spin B but the B tries the opposite\, resulting in chase-and-runaway dynamics. Applying our scheme to layered ferromagnets\, we show that a non-reciprocal phase transition from a static to a many-body time-dependent chiral phase emerges. Our work paves the way to bring solid-state systems to the realm of non-reciprocal science\, providing yet another possibility to control quantum matter with light. To address this\, our focus is on developing models that elucidate the mechanisms initiating and driving carcinogenesis\, initially concentrating on lung carcinoma. My laboratory has developed lung cell culture models using directed differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs). These models have helped uncover how specific genetic alterations promote carcinogenesis in specialized human cell lineages and identified potential factors contributing to lung cell malignancy. Another significant aspect of our research investigates the impact of microbiomes on cancer development\, particularly the understudied role of fungal communities (mycobiomes). We have crafted a novel 3D organotypic lung model (iLung) from differentiated hPSCs that more accurately mimics real-life fungal exposure through the use of live fungal spores. We prove that they scatter\, and that the wave operators mapping the initial data to the scattering states are 1-1\, onto and continuous in a suitable topology.\n\nThis is the first global existence result for strong solutions for KWE. This contrasts with prior global existence results for mild solutions\, which satisfy a transported version of the equation but do not solve the equation itself. \n\nOur proof is carried out entirely in physical space and combines dispersive estimates for the free transport with new trilinear bounds for the gain and loss operators of the KWE on weighted Lebesgue spaces. The main difficulty is the fast growth of the hard-sphere kernel. Our fundamental tool to handle it is a novel collisional averaging estimate.\n\nWe also show that the nonlinear evolution preserves positivity forward in time. House mice (Mus musculus domesticus) have recently been introduced into new environments where they have adapted through changes in morphology\, physiology\, and behavior. We collected wild house mice across North and South America\, from 55° S latitude to 54° N latitude\, and sequenced their genomes. We also established inbred strains of mice from diverse environments\, allowing us to study traits in a controlled laboratory environment and to conduct crosses between strains differing in traits of interest. House mice in the Americas conform to Bergmann’s rule (larger body size farther from the equator) and Allen’s rule (shorter extremities farther from the equator). These differences are genetically based\, although differences in the length of extremities also show considerable phenotypic plasticity when mice are reared at different temperatures. Through a combination of genome scans for selection\, studies of gene expression in the wild and in the lab\, association studies in natural populations\, and genetic crosses in the lab\, we have begun to identify genes and genomic patterns associated with adaptation to new environments. After enduring nearly 42 years wrongfully imprisoned at Angola State Penitentiary\, Tyler uses his textile-based practice to highlight issues of mass incarceration\, instilling messages of hope and resilience.\n\nTyler first learned to quilt to support the Angola Prison Hospice program\, where he was a volunteer. Notably\, Tyler was the President of the Angola Prison drama program for almost three decades\, using the position to promote a culture of community\, civic responsibility and introspection.\nMaterial\, symbolism\, and quilting traditions are central to Tyler’s work. Since his release in 2016\, Tyler’s applique quilts feature motifs of transformation\, self-portraits and intricate allegorical landscapes\, depicting memories of his time incarcerated\, including the legendary Angola Rodeo and his time as president of the drama program. Through his work\, Tyler honors the lives of those depicted and creates a dialogue around the lasting impact of mass incarceration and its roots in slavery\, with the hope of inspiring meaningful change.\n\nGary Tyler is a 2019 and 2020 Art Matters Awardee\, and in 2024 he received an honorary Doctorate Degree in Art and Design from the Massachusetts College of Art &\; Design. Tyler was awarded the 2024 Right of Return Fellowship by the Center for Art and Advocacy\, as well as the Frieze Los Angeles Impact Prize\, which recognizes an artist who has made a significant impact on society with their work. His work can be seen at the Historical New Orleans Collective Museum in New Orleans\, and is in the collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington\, D.C. as well as the City of Santa Monica’s Art Bank.\nPresented in partnership with the Library Street Collective\, with support from the Prison Creative Arts Project.
