SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CREES Exhibition. Threading the Needle: Vestiges of Colonialism and Femininity\, an installation by Gluklya
DESCRIPTION:Gluklya’s work is a powerful example of socially engaged art at the intersections of gender\, class\, and cultural identity. By focusing on experiences of female textile workers in Kyrgyzstan\, the artist explores the often-overlooked stories of women affected by Soviet and post-Soviet colonialism. \"Threading the Needle: Vestiges of Colonialism and Femininity\" retells their stories using a diverse range of media — film\, sculpture\, watercolors\, and felt tapestries. Unfolding the implications of economic and societal pressures on women\, Gluklya explores issues of poverty\, isolation\, and exploitation among the garment workers.\n \n Personal stories are woven into a broader social context — such as the legacy of the \"Likbez\" (liquidation of illiteracy) campaign among women in Central Asia during Soviet rule and entrenched patriarchal traditions\, like \"Ala Kachuu\" (bride-kidnapping). This dynamic — where colonization and modernization intertwine the individual lives they touch — raises questions about cultural identity and the ethical borders of decolonized research.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by CREES alumna Dianne Beal (BA REES '79). See more of her work here: https://www.diannebeal.com/curatorial.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at crees@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andy Ross Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The pieces here are from a large series of works made over the last several years. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. He received a BFA degree from College for Creative Studies\, and an MFA degree from University of Michigan. He has taught photography\, art\, and web design at colleges in California and Michigan. His photographs and collages have been exhibited in schools\, galleries\, and museums across the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Elizabeth Boyd-Hartmann Dizik Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This body of work represents a playful exploration of form\, color\, and scale through the lens of cellular shapes. Inspired by the complex patterns of biological life\, the pieces are a celebration of growth\, transformation\, and the joy of experimentation. The use of non-precious materials\, such as wood balls and paint\, allowed for a liberating approach to composition and color\, while the spherical forms and circular panels evoke the look of petri dishes—symbolizing both scientific curiosity and organic development.\nBorn in Detroit\, Elizabeth is a multidisciplinary artist and mother based in the metro Detroit area\, where she works from a studio in her home. With a background in bench jewelry\, her earlier work focused on studio jewelry and was represented by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal.\nElizabeth’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. She holds a BA in Jewelry Design\, with First Class Honours\, from Central Saint Martins in London\, a BFA from the University of Michigan\, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, where she specialized in Metalsmithing and Architecture. Her diverse practice spans jewelry\, sculpture\, and installation\, blending materials and techniques to explore themes of production\, growth\, transformation\, and organic form.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Redefining the Crown
DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Special Interdisciplinary QC-CM Seminar | What are altermagnets and why are they special?
DESCRIPTION:Altermagnetic materials are characterized by collinear magnetic order with a vanishing net magnetic moment\, but nevertheless have a spin-splitting in their non-relativistic electronic band structure. From ab initio calculations we have identified around 60 altermagnetic materials. From a theoretical point of view several physical properties that render altermagnets different from canonical antiferro-\, ferro- and ferri-magnets will be discussed. These include certain spin and heat transport features and piezomagnetic responses. By symmetry in principle also an anomalous Hall effect (AHE) may be allowed and we introduce an altermagnetic model in which the emergence of an AHE is driven by interactions. Quantum Monte Carlo simulations show that the system undergoes a finite temperature phase transition governed by a primary antiferromagnetic order parameter accompanied by a secondary altermagnetic one. The emergence of both orders turns the metallic state of the system\, away from half-filling\, into an altermagnet with zero net moment but finite AHE.\n\nReferences:\n— Y. Guo\, H. Liu\, O. SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Bibliophile and the Library: Private-Press Books from the Collection of Bill Heidrich
DESCRIPTION:View beautifully illustrated books that stand as remarkable testaments to the work of twentieth-century small private presses\, which\, in contrast to the trend of mass commercialization\, produced limited editions that celebrated the uniqueness of manual craftsmanship. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The New McCarthyism: The Future of DEI and Academic Freedom in Higher Education (Two Events Addressing Current Sociopolitical Pressures on Higher Education)
DESCRIPTION:EVENT 1: Manufactured Rage Against DEI as an Affront to Academic FreedomThe principles and practices of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion (DEI) have material\, individual and societal benefits as evidenced by years of interdisciplinary research and scholarship. Despite gains due to these efforts\, higher education and other social institutions are being targeted for their commitment to and investments in DEI\, in favor of race\, identity\, or characteristic specific evasive approaches that do not account for historical and contemporary discriminatory and exclusionary practices that make DEI necessary. Though DEI initiatives are the current target\, DEI only serves as an entry point into higher education with the intent of disrupting and dismantling the institution with academic freedom being another major target. Many scholars across a wide range of fields and disciplines interrogate inequities and disparities within and across groups and are now at risk of their research and scholarship being politicized and demonized due to an intensifying culture war that devalues the merit of such research\, scholarship\, and praxis. During this lecture and panel\, Isaac Kamola\, Associate Professor of Political Science at Trinity College\, will give a speak on the genesis of current attacks on Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion and their implications on academic freedom\, followed by a panel where panelists will consider why attacks on DEI are an affront to academic freedom\, how such attacks impact critical areas of research\, and the impact on higher education and society at large. Lastly\, the panel will imagine possibilities for collaborative strategies within and outside of the academy to counteract these attacks.  \nAfter the event\, a reception will be held in Victors Hall. Boxed food will be available for anyone observing Ramadan to take home. \nNOTE: To attend this session remotely\, please register via this link.  \nEVENT 2: The New McCarthyism: Authoritarianism and the Future of Academic Freedom\nAcademic freedom has continuously been subject to political and governmental pressures operating to censor subjects deemed controversial. Historically and now\, political and governmental pressures have led to McCarthy-esque crusades intent on rooting out alleged idealogues bent on indoctrinating students with “dangerous” ideas. Today\, these attacks on higher education have been turbo-charged\, with a well-funded and well-organized barrage of governmental and political forces operating collectively to undermine academic freedom. Faculty are facing pressures to avoid a multitude of subjects\, including DEI\, gender studies\, climate science\, women’s healthcare\, the Middle East\, critical race theory\, and vaccines. The combined impact of these pressures threatens the vigorous inquiry necessary for advancing human understanding. This panel discussion will consider historic and contemporary political and governmental attacks on higher education\, campus speech\, and institutional responses\, and it will offer suggestions toward counteracting such authoritarian efforts to limit academic freedom.Breakfast refreshments and snacks will be provided during the event. To-go boxes will be available for anyone observing Ramadan to take home. Watch the livestream here: https://youtube.com/live/5RgwMbb7TVM?feature=share\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Other:Leaves Under the Lens
DESCRIPTION:The leaf surface is a dynamic landscape where tiny\, specialized structures help plants interact with the world around them. Let’s bring this world into view! Join us for an exhibit that highlights the complex and often beautiful anatomy of leaves from the Matthaei collection. Plants throughout the conservatory will be paired with microscope photographs and micro-CT scans that illustrate the otherwise invisible structures that protect leaves from chewing insects\, absorb (or repel!) water\, and even recruit “bodyguards”. You won’t look at leaves the same way again! \n\nThis project is a collaboration between MBGNA and the Weber and Vasconcelos labs in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\, led by PhD student Rosemary Glos.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Annie Qu\, Chancellor’s Professor\, Department of Statistics\, University of California\, Irvine.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Recent advances in dynamic treatment regimes (DTRs) provide powerful optimal treatment searching algorithms\, which are tailored to individuals’ specific needs and able to maximize their expected clinical benefits. However\, existing algorithms could suffer from insufficient sample size under optimal treatments\, especially for chronic diseases involving long stages of decision-making. To address these challenges\, we propose a novel individualized learning method which estimates the DTR with a focus on prioritizing alignment between the observed treatment trajectory and the one obtained by the optimal regime across decision stages. By relaxing the restriction that the observed trajectory must be fully aligned with the optimal treatments\, our approach substantially improves the sample efficiency and stability of inverse probability weighted based methods. In particular\, the proposed learning scheme builds a more general framework which includes the popular outcome weighted learning framework as a special case of ours. Moreover\, we introduce the notion of stage importance scores along with an attention mechanism to explicitly account for heterogeneity among decision stages. We establish the theoretical properties of the proposed approach\, including the Fisher consistency and finite-sample performance bound. Empirically\, we evaluate the proposed method in extensive simulated environments and a real case study for COVID-19 pandemic.\n\n\nhttps://faculty.sites.uci.edu/qulab/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Frontiers in Scientific Machine Learning (FSML) Seminar: Alexander Tong (Post-doctoral Fellow\, Mila - Quebec AI Institute)
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Link:\n\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/97823527756?pwd=H01BbvtuG5q02Wzb8LJvhUnvijlAIe.1\n\nAbstract:\nGenerative flow models learn a (possibly stochastic) mapping between source and target distributions. Common paradigms include diffusion models\, score matching models\, and continuous normalizing flows. In this talk I will first present methods for improved training of flow models using flow matching objectives using ideas from optimal transport. I will then show how these improved methods can be applied to the tasks of (1) modelling cell dynamics\, which allow us to better understand disease programs –leading to a new potential therapeutic pathway for triple-negative breast cancer and (2) generative protein design\, with applications to biologic drug discovery.\n\nBio:\nAlexander Tong is a postdoctoral fellow at Mila with Yoshua Bengio\, visiting researcher at Oxford with Michael Bronstein\, cofounder of Dreamfold—a protein design startup\, and incoming assistant professor at Duke University starting July 2025. Alex completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science at Yale University in 2021 with Smita Krishnaswamy. His research interests span generative modeling\, graph signal processing\, and optimal transport to understand biological systems with a focus on cells and proteins.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:More than Gray: Reimagining Early America in Full Color
DESCRIPTION:The American past was lived in full color\, but this vibrant history can be easily missed in surviving evidence. You can’t deny that there’s something about a black-and-white photograph that feels… stuffy. With portraits showing people with their shirts buttoned right to the neck and everything in shades of gray and brown\, our imaginations can incline to thinking of the past as a bit staid\, if not downright dull. But look a little closer\, and you’ll see signs that the fashion choices available to those who came before us were more colorful than you might first think. From the fabrics they wore\, to the games they played\, or the books they read\, their world was alive with bright hues. This exhibit invites you to reimagine history with a fuller color palette and picture the vibrancy and joy that just might be hidden behind the unsmiling photographs.\n\nExhibition opening weekdays from 12-4.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Units and scales in the bioarchaeology of the Middle Period San Pedro oases\, northern Chile
DESCRIPTION:The San Pedro oases\, one of the few habitable locales in northern Chile’s Atacama Desert\, have been a focus of human occupation for some 4000 years. During the Middle Period (AD 500–1000)\, populations in the oases grew\, perhaps as a result of the incorporation of local communities in the Tiwanaku sphere of influence. Intensive bioarchaeological\, radiometric\, and isotopic analysis of hundreds of well-preserved skeletons from the oases’ numerous cemeteries has revealed a marked diversity of lifeways\, some that conform to expectations and others that defy homogenizing narratives. This work also raises questions about the scales and units of bioarchaeological analysis\, encouraging certain reconsideration but also opening new possibilities for future research.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary Workshop in Race\, Ethnicity and Politics
DESCRIPTION:Racial and ethnic identities play a key role in shaping behaviors\, attitudes\, institutions and social structures. As such\, scholars across disciplines have been devoted to investigating how race and ethnicity feature in every aspect of social and political life. The purpose of I-REP (Interdisciplinary Workshop in Race\, Ethnicity and Politics) is to provide a space for scholars whose research centers race\, ethnicity and politics across a number of fields to receive critical feedback on the early stages of their work (especially graduate students)\, build community with other researchers who share similar interests and offer an opportunity for participants to collaborate on a joint research project within the working group.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:People’s Talk Makes Things Happen: Member Interactions Energize Structural Changes in a Growing Organization
DESCRIPTION:There is a longstanding interest in the development of new ventures\, but little is known about how the design and structure of young firms grow and change as the firm grows. We propose and explore that various changes in patterns and content of member interactions correspond with changes in the structure of a growing firm. We examine this idea with quantitative inductive analyses of nearly 700\,000 messages\, sent on the Slack platform\, by members of a hi-tech firm as it grew from 40 to 402 employees over 5 years. We use big data quantitative tools to analyze and identify trends in the data and use inductive analyses to suggest theory about the interface of leader behaviors\, employee interaction behaviors and structural changes. Our theory suggests three core arguments: First\, as leaders add new members to the organization\, we show gradual growth in member responding to other people\, which we infer to be an increase in interactions (rather than “mere” statements) that serve to an integration of member efforts. Second\, as leaders assign people to various areas\, we show a lagging but clear uptick in tendency of members to select interaction partners from within their functional area\, which we suggest shows members’ interactions as gradual drivers of the structural grouping of members. Third\, as leaders allocate the organization’s work among functional areas\, we see a (partial\, incomplete\, yet clear) distinction between different functional areas in the content of interactions\, suggesting an emerging division of labor\, or a focus in the types of work different areas perform. Taken together\, our theory suggests a process of convergent structural elaboration of growing firms\, wherein design decisions of leaders and the interactions of members converge over time constructing the structures through which organizational work is accomplished.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Turning the Ratchet: Dynamic Screening with Multiple Agents
DESCRIPTION:We study a dynamic contracting problem with multiple agents and limited commitment. A principal seeks to screen efficient agents using one-period contracts\, but is tempted to revise contract terms upon knowing an agent’s type. Alterations of contracts are observable and\, hence\, whenever past promises are broken future information revelation stops. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions under which information revelation can be fostered. For sufficiently patient players\, private information is either never revealed or fully revealed in a sequential manner. Optimal contracts provide high-powered incentives upon initial disclosure of an agent’s type\, and rewards for information revelation vanish over time.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: Wave Turbulence of Multi-mode Dispersive Systems
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The evolution of infragravity edgewaves in the nearshore provides an interesting wave turbulence problem with multimode dispersion. We develop several facts about the dynamics and kinetics of this system based on the structure of the resonance manifold. We find the Komogorov-Zakharov spectrum for the example of a simple cross shore depth profile. Time permitting\, we will explore recent work on the nonlinear resonance and the dynamical turbulence of edge waves and related problems with multimode dispersion. \n\nContact: Peter Miller

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Pipe dream\, pattern\, and polytope perspectives on alternating sign matrices and totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions (Combinatorics Seminar)
DESCRIPTION:Alternating sign matrices are certain {0\,1\,-1}-matrices known to be equinumerous with plane partitions in the totally symmetric self-complementary symmetry class (TSSCPP)\, but no meaningful bijection is known. In joint work with Daoji Huang\, we give such a bijection in the reduced\, 1432-avoiding case\, using the bijection of Gao and Huang between reduced bumpless pipe dreams and reduced pipe dreams. In joint work with Mathilde Bouvel and Rebecca Smith\, we discuss the related notion of key-avoidance in alternating sign matrices. In joint work with Vincent Holmlund\, we transform TSSCPPs to {0\,1\,-1}-matrices we call magog matrices\, and investigate their enumerative and geometric properties.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Sociocultural Anthropology Colloquium | “Rape Culture or The Problem of Lived Experience that Recurs”
DESCRIPTION:A turn to the discourse of sexual violence in post-apartheid South Africa turns out to be a (re)turn to classical anthropology and leads to a consideration of the structural contradictions that organize nationalist discourse in the “postcolony” that remains a settler colony. This paper takes as its point of departure a conceptual dependency on a universal category of “woman” that cannot not account for the un-rapeability of Black women. Thus\, brought into focus is a methodological problematic of attending to sexual violence against Black women under colonial capitalist modernity in terms other than its erasure. The pursuit of this methodological problem leads to a pursuit of the ethnographic implications therein.\n\nThe ethnographic gesture\, a Kantian inheritance\, which shuttles between the particular – so-called “lived experience” – and a generalizable\, transcendental principle – is in pursuit of a mediating third term: culture. And it is in pursuit of a mediating third term that I interrogate the concept of “rape culture” as a figuration of the limit of the anthropological axiom that culture is premised on the legitimation of some forms of violent access to women and the foreclosure of others via the incest taboo – that unlocatable process and fantasized moment of rupture from nature that culture was “born.” While rape confuses this boundary\, I argue that opposing rape through recourse to the rights of women is coextensive with the system that permits both the legalization and the confusion of the law of violence against Black women – in capitalist colonial modernity.\n\nIn the idiom of the ethnographic\, the paper weaves together intimate and public discourses around sexual violence in contemporary South Africa\, scenes of coming-of-age under apartheid\, and Fanon’s elaboration of the psychosexual arrangement of colonial society. In turn\, it scrutinizes the fantasies of racial hatred and racial reconciliation that the concept of “rape culture” engenders in order to bring into focus the endurance of the axiom that organizes the false universalism of woman: “Whoever says rape says Black man.” Moving between the paradigm of “rape culture” and its impossible application for Black women\, the paper traces connections between the (im)possibility of attending to the lived experience of anti-Blackness and the psychical structuring of the social field\, enabled by and echoed in anthropological discourse. In the final instance\, the Black woman about whom Fanon knows “nothing” marks the point of departure for an (im)possible ethnography in the zone of non-being.\n\nChloé Samala Faux is the Provost’s Postdoctoral Equity Fellow in the Department of Anthropology at Wesleyan University. She creates social theory by bringing anthropological inquiry into conversation with interventions from Black critical theory\, Marxism and psychoanalysis\, and feminist theory\, to investigate the conditions of Black life and death under capitalist modernity. By way of the conjoined and redoubling discourses of psychoanalysis and anthropology\, her current book project interrogates the psychosexual and sociopolitical (re)-structuring of the family\, to understand both the failures of “transition” in South Africa and the insufficiencies of the culturalism that animates much Black radical criticism.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Algebraic Geometry: Birational rigidity and rationality
DESCRIPTION:A fundamental problem in algebraic geometry is to determine which varieties are rational\, that is\, birational to the projective space. The Noether-Fano method for proving non-rationality is based on the idea that a Fano variety birationally equivalent to another in a nontrivial way must admit a “very singular” linear system. In this talk\, we will introduce this method and prove that no smooth quartic threefold is rational.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Patricia Persaud\, University of Arizona
DESCRIPTION:Globally\, many densely populated urban areas with high seismic risk are located on top of sedimentary basins that can amplify earthquake ground motions. Sedimentary basins also offer important energy\, water\, and mineral resources\, and underground storage capacity for fuels including hydrogen. However\, in urban settings\, the complex structures of sedimentary basins combined with the limitations of the built environment present some of the biggest challenges for recording high quality seismic data\, imaging the basin structure\, and monitoring subsurface changes. We have demonstrated that installing dense seismic nodal arrays can address such critical observational gaps and at the same time\, broaden geoscience inclusivity\, and engage local communities. I will discuss the scientific findings from nodal arrays installed in Yangon\, Myanmar and in the San Fernando Valley\, California. I will also discuss resilience and recovery considerations that motivated hazard-related monitoring in these regions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture Series | Afghan Women’s Human Rights in the Age of the Taliban
DESCRIPTION:In honor of International Women’s Day on March 8th\, the Center for South Asian Studies is pleased to present a conversation focused on Afghanistan.\n \n How might the lessons of decades of Afghan feminist advocacy help us imagine a just and equitable future for the country? What can we learn from considering the Taliban in the wider context of a worldwide battle against extremism? What does the situation of women in Afghanistan tell us about women’s rights globally and about feminist solidarity?\n \n Speakers:\n \n Zahra Nader is a 2025 Knight Wallace Fellow and the founding editor-in-chief of Zan Times\, an award-winning newsroom in exile that covers human rights violations in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. Zahra has worked with local and international media\, including the New York Times in Kabul. She has been bylined in publications ranging from Time and Foreign Policy to the Guardian\, Globe and Mail\, and DW. SUMMARY:Exhibition:enemies + entities
DESCRIPTION:enemies + entities\; one of the most ironic sentences in life. With that irony in mind\, enemies + entities is an exhibition built to propose a question to the current generation regarding how media and interactive experiences are having both positive and negative impacts on each other\; in other words\, becoming each others’ enemies and entities. This exhibition discusses the question of whether or not enemies and entities can co-exist within a single concept or object through the lens of media\, ranging from film\, music\, video\, installations\, and digital media.\n\nOpen Hours:\nMarch 14\, 4 - 9pm\nMarch 15\, 11am - 5pm\nMarch 16\, 11am - 4pm\n\nPresented by Eva Choi (@drmnchld)\, BFA student in Performing Arts Technology\, with support from U-M ArtsEngine.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Geometry seminar: Geometry of extensions of free groups
DESCRIPTION:The interest in the geometry of group extensions started with the geometrization theorem of Thurston for compact irreducible atoroidal 3-manifolds. We will talk about the geometry extensions of (free) groups and the motivations behind such studies. More specifically\, we will give necessary and sufficient conditions for a free extension of a (non-Abelian) free group given by a subgroup of Out(F_n) to be hyperbolic and relatively hyperbolic\, in the most general case for the subgroup. We will also talk about hierarchical hyperbolicity of certain free-by cyclic groups. Based on joint works with Ghosh\, and Bongiovanni\, Ghosh and Hagen.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Linguistics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:At the University of Michigan\, Andries Coetzee is a Professor of Linguistics\, Senior Advisor (African Engagement)\, and Director of International Partnerships for the College of Literature\, Sciences\, and the Arts. Dr. Coetzee had perviously served as Director of the African Studies Center (2018-2022) at Michigan\, as well as editor of Language\, flagship journal of the Linguistic Society of America (2017-2022). He is also an honorary professor at the North-West University\, his South African alma mater.\n\nThis event is HYBRID on Zoom and in East Hall 4448.\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/98160522966\n\nTITLE: \nLanguage\, Place and Identity in Post-Colonial Societies: Three Case Studies from Afrikaans\n\nABSTRACT: \nLanguage happens in time and place. This historical and geographical situatedness of language impacts in substantive ways the grammatical features that a language has\, and also how users of the language define their identities relative to their language (or languages). Although this is true in all contexts where language is used\, post-colonial societies provide particularly rich and complex case studies of how language\, history\, place and identity are intricately related. In this presentation\, I will give an overview of colonial context in which Afrikaans originated\, and then investigate how Afrikaans grammar and the Afrikaans speech community continue to be shaped by the complexities of modern\, post-colonial South African society. I will investigate three case studies\, each demonstrating a different aspect of the complex linguistic landscape in which Afrikaans and its speakers exist: (i) Nasal coarticulation in different socio-ethnic varieties of Afrikaans\; (ii) the phonetic properties of filled pauses in Patagonian Afrikaans\; and (iii) regional and socio-ethnic variation in the front vowel space of Afrikaans.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Friday Night AI
DESCRIPTION:For millennia\, humans have been fascinated by the sounds and signals of the animal kingdom. Researchers in biology and environmental science have made significant progress in studying animal communication\, revealing complex vocal patterns and their roles in social interactions\, navigation\, and survival. Recently\, AI has started to complement this work by analyzing vast datasets\, identifying patterns\, and offering new perspectives on vocalizations—from decoding the meaning behind dog barks and primate calls to analyzing whale songs and bird communication. How much can AI truly reveal about animal communication? What are its current capabilities and limitations? Join us for a discussion with AI researchers and animal communication experts as we explore the latest advances in this space. \n\nWhen: March 14\, 6:30pm – 7:30pm\nWhere: AADL Ann Arbor downtown\, 4th Floor Meeting Room (343 S 5th Ave\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48104)\nWith interactive activities developed by graduate student Yara El-Tawil and Snehal Prabhudesai\n\nAbout the speakers:\n\nThore Bergman is a Professor of Psychology and Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan. He is interested in how primates use communication and cognition to navigate the social world. Thore studies wild primates because he is interested in both the causes of behavioral variation (what makes one animal respond a certain way while a different animal does something else?) and the consequences of behavior (how does the behavior affect their survival and reproduction?). Thore’s main study subjects are capuchin monkeys in Costa Rica and geladas in Ethiopia.\n\nArtem Abzaliev is a PhD student working on Multimodal Machine Learning/AI with a particular interest in analyzing and understanding Animal Communication with AI models. His research studied dog and bird vocalizations. He is also a dog lover!\n\nÁlvaro Vega-Hidalgo is a PhD student whose work focuses on computational approaches to studying animal communication and enhancing wildlife conservation through community-centered design. His research is driven by the intrinsic value of wildlife-human coexistence and fundamental questions about the evolution of language. Before joining UMich\, he worked at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, where he helped scaling AI systems across continents to monitor birds globally with the help of citizen science. He also contributed to Biometrio.earth\, a German company focused on Carbon Credit Transparency using AI.\n\nModerator: Rada Mihalcea is the Janice M. Jenkins Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan and the Director of the Michigan Artificial Intelligence Lab. Her research interests are in natural language processing\, with a focus on multimodal processing and computational social sciences. She is an ACM Fellow\, a AAAI Fellow\, and served as ACL President (2018-2022 Vice/Past). She is the recipient of a Sarah Goddard Power award (2019) for her contributions to diversity in science\, and the recipient of a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers awarded by President Obama (2009).

SUMMARY:Performance:Intro to Puppetry presents \"Biki's Marvelous Migration\"
DESCRIPTION:Students from THTREMUS 285: Intro to Puppetry will create 5 short puppet shows on the theme of migration\, to be performed in various locations around North Campus. Each team will also develop a soundscape for each location that will be live broadcast via QR code in real time (like a silent disco)\, so bring some headphones!\n\nViewers can attend the shows in any order. The migratory pattern is circular\, dynamic\, even recursive. This reflects the theme: migration is less a predictable\, orderly flow than a complex process subject to social\, political\, environmental and other pressures.\n\nMeet Biki outside and around the Walgreen Drama Center. Then follow Biki's adventures to the Moore building and beyond.\n\nFree and open to the public\, rain or shine!

SUMMARY:Performance:Shamel Pitts | TRIBE
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 2019 by American choreographer and performer Shamel Pitts\, an alumnus of Batsheva Dance Company\, TRIBE is an arts collective composed of international and local artists working across mediums to create a platform for artists of color.\n\nThe collective’s work is inspired by the Afrofuturism movement\, which strives to tell new stories and create a brighter future that is different\, and shines more luminously\, from its past. In BLACK HOLE\, three Black dancers share the stage in a narrative of unity\, vigor\, and unrelenting advancement. Their journey originates in the darkness of the titular Black Hole\, understood not as a cosmic void but a metaphorical place of transformation and potential. Engulfed in an evocative soundscape of original music\, sound samples\, and spoken word\, the dancers embark on an hour-long\, uninterrupted journey in movement\, in which their tenacity and grace are emphasized by cinematic video projections and stark\, monochromatic lights. “Another person challenging the traditional views on Black masculinity is Shamel Pitts\, one of the most acclaimed dancers/choreographers of his generation and a shining example of Black excellence.” (Afropunk)
