DESCRIPTION:The African Muslim Film Festival is the first of its kind\, screening films from all across Africa that were made by\, for\, or about Muslims. All films will be streamable & online\, featuring films from Somalia\, Sudan\, Mauritania\, and Tunisia. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

DESCRIPTION:“RAW” is a 2024 printmaking portfolio featuring 25 15”x20” works on paper by a diverse group of primarily student artists\, organized by Professor Endi Poskovic of the Stamps Printmedia program. The hand-pulled prints in the set\, which has never been exhibited before\, span media from colorful laser cut woodblock prints\, to lithography\, to copper plate etching. The newly formed Stamps Student-led Exhibitions Committee (SEC) will curate and rotate selections of these prints in alignment with the portfolio’s theme—where time and effort transform raw potential.

Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

DESCRIPTION:The leaf surface is a dynamic landscape where tiny\, specialized structures help plants interact with the world around them. Let’s bring this world into view! Join us for an exhibit that highlights the complex and often beautiful anatomy of leaves from the Matthaei collection. Plants throughout the conservatory will be paired with microscope photographs and micro-CT scans that illustrate the otherwise invisible structures that protect leaves from chewing insects\, absorb (or repel!) water\, and even recruit “bodyguards”. You won’t look at leaves the same way again! \n\nThis project is a collaboration between MBGNA and the Weber and Vasconcelos labs in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\, led by PhD student Rosemary Glos.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

DESCRIPTION:Guest artist Hie-Yon Choi\, Professor at the Peabody Conservatory of Music\, will present a master class for University of Michigan piano students. Free and open to the public.\n\nOne of the most sought-after pianists of her generation\, South Korean pianist HIEYON CHOI first appeared on the international piano music scene when she won prizes at high-profile competitions such as Kapell\, Epinal\, Busoni and Viotti. HieYon Choi has been since performing with prestigious orchestras of Europe\, US and Korea such as das Rundfunkorchester Berlin\, the National Symphony Orchestra (Washington DC)\, the Northern Sinfonia\, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and the Korean Broadcast Symphony Orchestra and appears as a soloist in festivals and concert series.\n\nA milestone of Choi’s performing career was the four-year long cycle of all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas at the Kumho Art Hall in Seoul. For this series she received the Arts Award of the year 2005 by the Korean Arts & Cultural Association. Later she completed another Beethoven cycle with all piano trios\, violin sonatas and works for cello and piano. Her second cycle of all Beethoven piano sonatas took place in various venues in Korea\, Germany and the US until 2018. Choi‘s other series of performances include ones that explored Brahms and his associates and that of French school. She has been collaborating with renowned musicians such as Truls Mørk\, Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi\, Peter Stumph\, Mark Kosower\, Romain Guyot\, Stephan Dohr\, Ulf Wallin\, Mikyung Lee\, Soovin Kim.\n\nAlongside the canon of the classical piano literature such as Beethoven\, Schubert\, Brahms and Debussy\, Music of 20th & 21st century forms another important part of Choi’s career. A strong advocate of the new music\, she was the inaugural Artist-in-Residence of Tong-Yeong International Music festival. She performed works of Olivier Messiaen\, György Kurtag\, Sofia Gubaidulina\, York Höller\, Unsuk Chin\, Suhki Kang a. o. with the Seoul Philharmonic.  \n\nRecently Choi completed her long journey of recording entire Beethoven piano sonatas. Her first two Beethoven albums were released in 2018 and in 2021 retrospectively by Decca Korea and UMG and they were highly noted by German and Korean magazine/papers. The entire set of Beethoven piano sonatas are to be released in the upcoming year. Her other recordings include *Debussy Douze Etudes*\, *F. Liszt Six Grand Etudes on Paganini*\, *Isang Yun 5 Stücke*\, *Chopin Etudes Op. 10 & Op. 25*. Choi appeared and performed in TV & radio channels in Korea\, US\, Italy\, Switzerland\, Sweden and in Germany. \n\nIn 2023/24 HieYon Choi joined the piano faculty at Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore\, US\, after having served for 24 years as tenured piano professor at Seoul National University in Korea. Choi has been giving numerous master classes worldwide\; the Guildhall School in London\, Ecole Normale in Paris\, Sibelius Academy in Helsinki\, the Hochschule Freiburg\, Karlsruhe\, Düsseldorf in Germany\, Music School of Manhattan\, Cincinnati\, Michigan in the US\, Performing Arts Hong-Kong\, China and in summer festivals in Italy\, France\, Korea and in the US. Choi also serves as a jury member at international competitions such as Beethoven\, Maj Lind\, Pozzoli\, Epinal and Orléans. \n\nBorn in Inchon\, South Korea\, Choi gave her debut concert at the age of 6 with the Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra. She won all four most coveted competitions in Korea (Dong-A\, Choong-Ang\, Korea Times\, Ehwa-KyungHyang) under the early tutelage of Prof. Joong-Won Koh and moved to Germany at the age of 18 to study with Prof. Klaus Hellwig at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin. The late Prof. Hans Leygraf at the same institute and the late Prof. György Sebök at Indiana University were further source of inspiration to her.

DESCRIPTION:Students from THTREMUS 285: Intro to Puppetry will create 5 short puppet shows on the theme of migration\, to be performed in various locations around North Campus. Each team will also develop a soundscape for each location that will be live broadcast via QR code in real time (like a silent disco)\, so bring some headphones!\n\nViewers can attend the shows in any order. The migratory pattern is circular\, dynamic\, even recursive. This reflects the theme: migration is less a predictable\, orderly flow than a complex process subject to social\, political\, environmental and other pressures.\n\nMeet Biki outside and around the Walgreen Drama Center. DESCRIPTION:Guest artist HieYon Choi\, Professor at the Peabody Conservatory of Music\, will present a concert featuring the music of Beethoven: Sonatas Op. 53 (\"Waldstein\")\, Op. 109\, Op. 110\, and Op. 111.\n\nOne of the most sought-after pianists of her generation\, South Korean pianist HIEYON CHOI first appeared on the international piano music scene when she won prizes at high-profile competitions such as Kapell\, Epinal\, Busoni and Viotti. HieYon Choi has been since performing with prestigious orchestras of Europe\, US and Korea such as das Rundfunkorchester Berlin\, the National Symphony Orchestra (Washington DC)\, the Northern Sinfonia\, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and the Korean Broadcast Symphony Orchestra and appears as a soloist in festivals and concert series.\n\nA milestone of Choi’s performing career was the four-year long cycle of all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas at the Kumho Art Hall in Seoul. For this series she received the Arts Award of the year 2005 by the Korean Arts & Cultural Association. Later she completed another Beethoven cycle with all piano trios\, violin sonatas and works for cello and piano. Her second cycle of all Beethoven piano sonatas took place in various venues in Korea\, Germany and the US until 2018. Choi‘s other series of performances include ones that explored Brahms and his associates and that of French school. She has been collaborating with renowned musicians such as Truls Mørk\, Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi\, Peter Stumph\, Mark Kosower\, Romain Guyot\, Stephan Dohr\, Ulf Wallin\, Mikyung Lee\, Soovin Kim.\n\nAlongside the canon of the classical piano literature such as Beethoven\, Schubert\, Brahms and Debussy\, Music of 20th & 21st century forms another important part of Choi’s career. A strong advocate of the new music\, she was the inaugural Artist-in-Residence of Tong-Yeong International Music festival. She performed works of Olivier Messiaen\, György Kurtag\, Sofia Gubaidulina\, York Höller\, Unsuk Chin\, Suhki Kang a. o. with the Seoul Philharmonic.  \n\nRecently Choi completed her long journey of recording entire Beethoven piano sonatas. Her first two Beethoven albums were released in 2018 and in 2021 retrospectively by Decca Korea and UMG and they were highly noted by German and Korean magazine/papers. The entire set of Beethoven piano sonatas are to be released in the upcoming year. Her other recordings include *Debussy Douze Etudes*\, *F. Liszt Six Grand Etudes on Paganini*\, *Isang Yun 5 Stücke*\, *Chopin Etudes Op. 10 & Op. 25*. Choi appeared and performed in TV & radio channels in Korea\, US\, Italy\, Switzerland\, Sweden and in Germany. \n\nIn 2023/24 HieYon Choi joined the piano faculty at Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore\, US\, after having served for 24 years as tenured piano professor at Seoul National University in Korea. Choi has been giving numerous master classes worldwide\; the Guildhall School in London\, Ecole Normale in Paris\, Sibelius Academy in Helsinki\, the Hochschule Freiburg\, Karlsruhe\, Düsseldorf in Germany\, Music School of Manhattan\, Cincinnati\, Michigan in the US\, Performing Arts Hong-Kong\, China and in summer festivals in Italy\, France\, Korea and in the US. Choi also serves as a jury member at international competitions such as Beethoven\, Maj Lind\, Pozzoli\, Epinal and Orléans. \n\nBorn in Inchon\, South Korea\, Choi gave her debut concert at the age of 6 with the Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra. She won all four most coveted competitions in Korea (Dong-A\, Choong-Ang\, Korea Times\, Ehwa-KyungHyang) under the early tutelage of Prof. Joong-Won Koh and moved to Germany at the age of 18 to study with Prof. Klaus Hellwig at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin. The late Prof. Hans Leygraf at the same institute and the late Prof. György Sebök at Indiana University were further source of inspiration to her.

In BLACK HOLE\, three Black dancers share the stage in a narrative of unity\, vigor\, and unrelenting advancement. Their journey originates in the darkness of the titular Black Hole\, understood not as a cosmic void but a metaphorical place of transformation and potential. DESCRIPTION:New Blue Ridge acoustic Americana with old-time flavors\n\nThe Steel Wheels have long been at home in the creative space between tradition and innovation\, informed by the familiar sounds of the Virginia mountains where the band was formed\, but always moving forward with insightful lyrics and an evolving sound. In 2005\, Jay Lapp (vocals\, guitars\, mandolin) and Eric Brubaker (vocals\, fiddle) joined lead singer Trent Wagler (guitar\, banjo) in forming the band as a vehicle for Wagler’s songwriting. They released several albums under Wagler’s moniker\, before officially adopting the The Steel Wheels name with the 2010 release of Red Wing. Quickly staking their claim as independent upstarts in the burgeoning Americana scene\, The Steel Wheels followed up this release with three more self-produced albums in the next five years\, before joining forces with producer Sam Kassirer for Wild As We Came Here (2017) and Over The Trees (2019). Kevin Garcia (drums\, percussion\, keys) joined in 2017\, bringing a new level of sonic depth and polish to the outfit. Newest member Jeremy Darrow rounds out the rhythm section and grounds the band as they continue to explore deeply rooted yet fresh folk rock sounds.\n\nHaving gained the experience of thousands of shows\, festivals and many miles on the road\, the stubbornly independent band has formed deep bonds with each other and the audience that sustains them. Whether at a joyous summer festival\, in their many shows across the country and beyond\, or in the studio\, The Steel Wheels continue their mission set out over a decade ago\; shaking up traditions to see what sticks\, telling stories\, and joining communities through song.
