SUMMARY:Exhibition:Multiracial Families: Increasing Rapidly
DESCRIPTION:This digital exhibit in the Shapiro Lobby showcases research about and narratives from people across the globe who are part of mixed race families.\n\nIn 1967\, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the Loving v. Virginia case that marriage across racial lines was legal throughout the country. Intermarriage has increased steadily since then: one in five U.S. newlyweds (19%) were married to a person of a different race or ethnicity in 2019\, a more than sixfold increase from 3% in 1967 (Pew Research Center\, 2022).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CREES Exhibition. Threading the Needle: Vestiges of Colonialism and Femininity\, an installation by Gluklya
DESCRIPTION:Gluklya’s work is a powerful example of socially engaged art at the intersections of gender\, class\, and cultural identity. By focusing on experiences of female textile workers in Kyrgyzstan\, the artist explores the often-overlooked stories of women affected by Soviet and post-Soviet colonialism. \"Threading the Needle: Vestiges of Colonialism and Femininity\" retells their stories using a diverse range of media — film\, sculpture\, watercolors\, and felt tapestries. Unfolding the implications of economic and societal pressures on women\, Gluklya explores issues of poverty\, isolation\, and exploitation among the garment workers.\n \n Personal stories are woven into a broader social context — such as the legacy of the \"Likbez\" (liquidation of illiteracy) campaign among women in Central Asia during Soviet rule and entrenched patriarchal traditions\, like \"Ala Kachuu\" (bride-kidnapping). This dynamic — where colonization and modernization intertwine the individual lives they touch — raises questions about cultural identity and the ethical borders of decolonized research.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by CREES alumna Dianne Beal (BA REES '79). See more of her work here: https://www.diannebeal.com/curatorial.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at crees@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:2025 AI in Science and Engineering Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) promises an enormous potential to transform academic research to “mass produce” human knowledge and enable humans to address research questions and engineering challenges that were previously unfathomable. However\, the massive adoption of AI in research and the assurance of positive societal impact of the output of such research will be possible only when we can address a multitude of technical and ethical issues\, ensure infrastructure and skill building\, and understand the impact of AI on society’s challenges. Collaboration among researchers and organizations regionally and globally is essential. \n\nIn this symposium\, we bring together world-class researchers to share their vision and work\; share “AI journeys” stories - how University of Michigan researchers have been incorporating AI in their research and the lessons they impart to the audience\; and offer sessions for research brainstorming and skill building. \n\nFor a full schedule of sessions and speakers\, please visit our event page: https://myumi.ch/qVXg2\n\nThe intended audience are researchers and trainees regardless of the specific fields of their research and the focus of their intellectual pursuit\, as well as the general public who are curious about AI and its impact on science and humanity.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andy Ross Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The pieces here are from a large series of works made over the last several years. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. He received a BFA degree from College for Creative Studies\, and an MFA degree from University of Michigan. He has taught photography\, art\, and web design at colleges in California and Michigan. His photographs and collages have been exhibited in schools\, galleries\, and museums across the United States.

DESCRIPTION:Artist John Rizzo is exhibiting individual mixed-media sculptures that bridge across art\, design\, and craft. Using a combination of materials that are historically perceived as precious John's work distorts\, disrupts\, and re-contextualizes perceptions of materials and their values. His work is at once \, colorful \, playful \, layered and deeply self-reflective in its personal narrative.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Elizabeth Boyd-Hartmann Dizik Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This body of work represents a playful exploration of form\, color\, and scale through the lens of cellular shapes. Inspired by the complex patterns of biological life\, the pieces are a celebration of growth\, transformation\, and the joy of experimentation. The use of non-precious materials\, such as wood balls and paint\, allowed for a liberating approach to composition and color\, while the spherical forms and circular panels evoke the look of petri dishes—symbolizing both scientific curiosity and organic development.\nBorn in Detroit\, Elizabeth is a multidisciplinary artist and mother based in the metro Detroit area\, where she works from a studio in her home. With a background in bench jewelry\, her earlier work focused on studio jewelry and was represented by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal.\nElizabeth’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. She holds a BA in Jewelry Design\, with First Class Honours\, from Central Saint Martins in London\, a BFA from the University of Michigan\, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, where she specialized in Metalsmithing and Architecture. Her diverse practice spans jewelry\, sculpture\, and installation\, blending materials and techniques to explore themes of production\, growth\, transformation\, and organic form.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Redefining the Crown
DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Bibliophile and the Library: Private-Press Books from the Collection of Bill Heidrich
DESCRIPTION:View beautifully illustrated books that stand as remarkable testaments to the work of twentieth-century small private presses\, which\, in contrast to the trend of mass commercialization\, produced limited editions that celebrated the uniqueness of manual craftsmanship. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Other:Leaves Under the Lens
DESCRIPTION:The leaf surface is a dynamic landscape where tiny\, specialized structures help plants interact with the world around them. Let’s bring this world into view! Join us for an exhibit that highlights the complex and often beautiful anatomy of leaves from the Matthaei collection. Plants throughout the conservatory will be paired with microscope photographs and micro-CT scans that illustrate the otherwise invisible structures that protect leaves from chewing insects\, absorb (or repel!) water\, and even recruit “bodyguards”. You won’t look at leaves the same way again! \n\nThis project is a collaboration between MBGNA and the Weber and Vasconcelos labs in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\, led by PhD student Rosemary Glos.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Symposium on Critical Transgender Studies
DESCRIPTION:Join the 2024-25 Frankel Institute Fellows for three panels featuring guest scholars from the USA\, Canada\, and Israel\, all exploring various intersections of their respective studies under this year's theme\, \"Queer/Trans/Jewish.\" \n\n\nPANEL 1: TRANS BEFORE THE \"MODERN\" - 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM\nModerator: Simone Stirner\nPresenters: Jessie deGrado\, Dorothy Kim (Brandeis University)\, Scott Larson\, Rafe Neis\, Max Strassfeld\n\nPanel participants will engage in a conversation on several themes at the intersection of transing\, asexuality\, and Judaic studies in the premodern era. Questions will include how studying the past can denaturalize modern-contemporary gender categories\, how transing as an approach is distinct from contemporary definitions of trans-ness\, and how a trans framework can help us problematize the category of modernity itself\n\n\nPANEL 2: TRANS EMBODIMENT IN MODERNITY - 1:30 - 3:30 PM\nModerator: Sheer Ganor\nPresenters: Rafael Balling\, Gil Engelstein\, and Shira Schwartz (Northwestern University)\n\nThis panel explores questions and debates that emerge at the axis of Jewish and trans experiences in the modern world. Reflecting through their research expertise and beyond\, speakers will discuss themes including visibility and its discontents\, linkages\, and tensions between trans and Jewish identities\, and the challenges that communities face in light of unprecedented attacks on trans people.\n\n\nPANEL 3: QUEER THEORY - 4:30 - 6:30 PM\nModerated by Rovel Sequeira\nPresented by Adi Saleem and Amal Ziv\n\n\nPlease RSVP for the conference here: https://forms.gle/LMxfURuR5vaKGAy97

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Gender Pay Gap: Micro Sources and Macro Consequence (with Iacopo Morchio)
DESCRIPTION:Using linked employer-employee data from Brazil\, we document a large gender pay gap due to women working at lower-paying employers. To interpret this fact\, we develop an equilibrium search model with endogenous firm pay\, amenities\, and hiring. We provide a constructive proof of identification of all model parameters. The estimated model suggests that amenities are important for both men and women and that compensating differentials explain half of the gender pay gap. Equal-treatment policies partly close gender gaps but are not output- or welfare-improving.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Center for Emerging Democracies Lecture. Claims\, Complaints and Democratization of the Local State in India
DESCRIPTION:Zoom registration at https://myumi.ch/4jqew\n\nThe talk will be based on my book project which examines the effects of rights-based welfare expansion in India on local governance and civic action through a comparison between two accountability systems in the state of Bihar\; Social Audits and the Right to Public Grievance Redress Act. Based on extensive field research conducted across six districts\, the book argues that the ritualization of interactions with citizens who have been historically marginalized\, in rule-based settings\, builds a new legal consciousness within the bureaucracy. The book shows how these new openings in the local state\, which combine organic forms of mobilization with induced forms of participation and recognition of individual and collective claims\, builds political capacities through its use\, incentivizes collective action\, and enlivens local democracy. In large part\, these changes can be attributed to the role of state-sponsored but autonomous facilitation and transforming the conditions under which the state listens.\n\nAnindita Adhikari is a political sociologist whose research interests include social movements\, bureaucracies\, the politics of welfare provisioning and democratic deepening. She has been co-teaching a course on accountability and governance for the MPP programme at NLS since 2021. Her research and teaching is motivated and informed by 15 years of public action work embedded in diverse policy settings. She has been associated with the Right to Work\, Right to Information\, and Right to Food campaigns. She has previously worked with the Government of Bihar and the Ministry of Rural Development on employment\, social security\, and land issues. She co-founded the organization ‘Social Accountability Forum for Action and Research’ (SAFAR) in 2022 that works on strengthening transparency and accountability in public service delivery in collaboration with state and national governments and civil society. \n\nYamini Aiyar was the president and chief executive of the Centre for Policy Research\, New Delhi\, a public policy research think tank. She was appointed President of CPR in 2017. She was previously a senior research fellow and founder\, in 2008\, of the Accountability Initiative at the centre.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series. The Tang-Song Traduction: The Imperialist Agenda behind Naitō Konan’s (1866-1934) Periodization of Chinese History
DESCRIPTION:During the 1910s and 1920s\, the Japanese historian Naitō Konan (1866-1934) published a number of books and articles in which he argued that the “modern age” in East Asia began in the Song dynasty (960-1279 CE). The resulting notion of a structural divide between the “medieval” Tang dynasty (618-907 CE) and the “modern” Song dynasty—the so-called “Tang-Song transition”—became foundational to the historiography of the Tang and Song dynasties in Europe and the United States after the Second World War\, even though few agreed that “modern” was an apt designation for the Song period. As the outline of Naitō’s ideas gained acceptance\, however\, the political context of their origin was forgotten. A re-examination of Naitō’s scholarly and journalistic writings shows that his core concepts and arguments derived less from the primary sources than from debates about the legacy of the Meiji Restoration during the 1910s and debates about the future of Japanese imperialism during the 1920s.\n \n Christian de Pee is Professor of History at the University of Michigan. His books and articles analyze the relationship between text and space\, whether in wedding ritual\, tombs\, cities\, literary genres\, or historiography. His latest book\, \"Urban Life and Intellectual Crisis in Middle-Period China\, 800-1100\" (Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press\, 2022) and his latest article\, “Marco Polo’s Baggage: Manuscripts\, Doubts\, and a Mongol Lady’s Headdress” (Journal of Song-Yuan Studies 53 [2024]) are both freely available through Open Access.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:More than Gray: Reimagining Early America in Full Color
DESCRIPTION:The American past was lived in full color\, but this vibrant history can be easily missed in surviving evidence. You can’t deny that there’s something about a black-and-white photograph that feels… stuffy. With portraits showing people with their shirts buttoned right to the neck and everything in shades of gray and brown\, our imaginations can incline to thinking of the past as a bit staid\, if not downright dull. But look a little closer\, and you’ll see signs that the fashion choices available to those who came before us were more colorful than you might first think. From the fabrics they wore\, to the games they played\, or the books they read\, their world was alive with bright hues. This exhibit invites you to reimagine history with a fuller color palette and picture the vibrancy and joy that just might be hidden behind the unsmiling photographs.\n\nExhibition opening weekdays from 12-4.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Tuesday Seminar Series - Hot\, salty\, scary: Exploring the biotic and abiotic mediators of multitrophic interactions
DESCRIPTION:Species don’t exist in isolation—they constantly interact with one another in ways that range from mutualistic to antagonistic\, shaping ecosystems and evolution. These interactions aren’t fixed\; they shift with changing biotic and abiotic conditions\, making their outcomes challenging to predict. My dissertation explores how temperature\, predators\, and plant rewards mediate species interactions across multiple trophic levels. Through experimental studies on indirect defense mutualisms\, fungal microbiome dynamics\, and pollinator communities\, I examine how ecological context shapes the functioning and outcomes of plant multitrophic interactions. As climate change and biodiversity loss reshape species interactions\, understanding the relationships between these diverse groups is all the more important.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:KIS Lecture: Gabbrielle Johnson
DESCRIPTION:Location: 2271 Angell Hall\nTitle: Precarious Accurate Predictions in Automated Decision-Making\n\nAbstract: \nWith the rising temptation to rely on automated decision-making\, mere predictive accuracy increasingly becomes the standard. In this talk\, I argue that the allure of so-called “precarious accurate predictions”— those where predictive accuracy masks the problematic nature of the underlying reasoning patterns—poses significant ethical and procedural risks. Drawing on insights from philosophy of mind and psychology\, I highlight two ways in which these predictions falter under scrutiny: through their reliance on stealth proxies and their susceptibility to illusions of depth. These in turn establish two unmet desiderata for the effective integration of predictive analytics in automated decision-making: that predictive models address proxy discrimination beyond statistical correlations and distinguish between superficial and deep causal-explanatory connections among features. The talk ends by underscoring the urgent need for a critical reevaluation of the prospective use of automated predictions in legal processes\, cautioning against their expansion into domains like criminal justice\, where they threaten to erode established rights and safeguards.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Webinar: Using Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) to Assess Oyster Reefs to Inform Management and Restoration
DESCRIPTION:In the southeastern U.S.\, intertidal oyster (Crassostrea virginica) reefs are primarily managed by state agencies in support of recreational and commercial fisheries\, as well as for their ecosystem services. Oyster resource managers and NERR staff often rely on conventional on-the-ground monitoring approaches to inform management and restoration decisions\, but these approaches have limitations in that they are time consuming and are of limited spatial scale. In response to users' needs for rapid\, standardized and quantitative measures to assess reef condition – which directs management and restoration actions – this project evaluated uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) as a tool for measuring reef changes within five National Estuarine Research Reserves (NERRs) from North Carolina to Florida. The imagery analysis workflows developed in partnership with oyster resource managers provide quantitative measures of reef structural and demographic metrics and\, importantly\, changes to those metrics in response to natural and anthropogenic factors. Join this webinar to learn more about this enhanced technical capacity for conducting UAS-based oyster reef assessments.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2025 Sylvia Thrupp Lecture (Presented by Comparative Studies in Society and History)
DESCRIPTION:Lauren Benton’s 2005 CSSH article mapped piracy’s imperial role and challenged the romanticized view of pirates as legal outcasts in the early modern world. Two decades later\, controversies about whether pirates were agents of empires or enemies of all persist. Benton moves beyond these debates here to gauge maritime raiding’s wider political valence. A single “piratical” cruise reveals the nineteenth-century Atlantic’s vast political spectrum\, encompassing city-states\, federations\, and empires. In cases sparked by the voyage\, the U.S. Supreme Court sought to narrow the definition of states and war. The voyage meanwhile connected to open-ended constitutional projects in Latin America featuring nation-states as one of many political possibilities. A micro-history of one voyage brings into focus the process by which the international order emerged through political fragmentation. The lessons remain relevant to understandings of global order and non-state violence in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.\n\nLauren Benton is Barton M. Biggs Professor of History and Professor of Law at Yale University. Benton’s most recent book\, “They Called It Peace: Worlds of Imperial Violence\,” was published in 2024 and shortlisted for the Cundill History Prize. Previous books include “Rage for Order: The British Empire and the Origins of International Law\, 1800-1850” (coauthored with Lisa Ford)\; “A Search for Sovereignty: Law and Geography in European Empires\, 1400-1900”\; and “Law and Colonial Cultures: Legal Regimes in World History\, 1400-1900\,” which received the Jerry Bentley Book Prize and the James Willard Hurst Book Prize. In 2019\, Benton was awarded the Toynbee Prize for significant contributions to global history.\n\nRespondents:\nJatin Dua\, University of Michigan\nNathan Perl-Rosenthal\, University of Southern California\nJudith Scheele\, School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Catalytic strategies for the selective construction of sp3-rich organic scaffolds
DESCRIPTION:The topological complexity of sp3-rich scaffolds imparts specific beneficial properties into organic small molecules and enables refined tuning of a molecule’s properties. However\, this complexity amplifies both reactivity and selectivity challenges\, making the development of versatile methods to construct and diversify these structures difficult. By combining fundamental advances in transition metal catalysis with organic synthesis\, we aim to discover new reactions to solve unmet challenges in the construction of functional sp3-rich organic scaffolds. In one area\, we have found that identifying “unconventional” ligand platforms for palladium catalysis leads to new reactivity and selectivity in olefin heteroannulation reactions. In another area\, we have found that copper complexes can promote a range of oxidative radical addition reactions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Colloquium Seminar: A remarkable ball quotient\, the Monster group\, and algebraic geometry
DESCRIPTION:About 27 years ago Allcock found a ball quotient of dimension 13\, which is intriguing for at least two reasons: its expected connections with some of the sporadic finite simple groups (such as the Monster group) and the likelihood of it having a modular interpretation. I shall first review some known examples of modular ball quotients and then describe recent progress on the moonshine properties of this ball quotient.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EHAP Lecture Series: How Infants Learn To Eat Plants (And Why They May Not Want To)
DESCRIPTION:Life is mostly plants. Plants constitute an estimated 80% of the biomass on Earth and are concentrated in terrestrial environments. Millions of animal species rely on plants to survive and the organismic design of plants and animals have been tightly interwoven in intricate ways over evolutionary time. Humans are no exception. Plants have been a foundational component of human diets across evolutionary time\, yet many plants can be toxic or even fatal if ingested. In this talk\, I will present research exploring the cognitive systems human infants use to negotiate this paradox and learn which plants they can safely eat.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MEMS Special Lecture: Colonial Contact Zones and Constructions of Race in Greenland and Sapmi\, 900-150
DESCRIPTION:The question when racism originated has been a matter of fierce debate among medievalists in recent years. And even though racism and colonialism are closely linked in the modern era\, the beginnings of colonialism have so far been neglected in this context. This talk will therefore examine Greenland and Fennoscandia before 1500 when\, on the margins of Europe\, the Inuit and Sámi became targets of aggressive colonization and assimilation policies during medieval times. These case studies explore colonialism as a failed project (Greenland) as well as colonialism without a moment zero (Sápmi). \"Colonial Contact Zones and Constructions of Race\" thus challenges current narratives in regards to the development of race and racism in the European Middle Ages.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Mothers of Gynecology - An Evening with Artist Michelle Browder and Friends
DESCRIPTION:This event is organized around the upcoming loan of a Robert Thom painting from Michigan Medicine’s collection to artist Michelle Browder. The painting depicts surgeon J. Marion Sims (generally lionized as the \"father of modern gynecology\") and three of the enslaved Black women on whom he experimented in his effort to treat vesicovaginal fistula. \n \nBrowder founded a museum honoring the women depicted in the painting. Her art reimagined the painting by centering the women who made modern gynecology possible — the \"mothers of gynecology\" — and has spurred needed conversations about the history of gynecology and medical racism. In addition to Ms. Browder\, Drs. Aletha Maybank and Veronica Pimentel will speak\, as will descendants of one of the women depicted in the painting.\n \nThe event will mark the occasion of this painting getting a fitting home\, consider Michigan Medicine's dilemmas over whether/how to display it\, and examine the history of gynecology and medicine more broadly. \n \nRegistration required\, seating is limited. A livestream link will also be available after registration. \n \nQuestions? Please contact Heidi Mueller at (734) 647-6914 or muellerh@umich.edu \n

DESCRIPTION:“If Nick Drake and Sandy Denny had had a kid\, she may have grown up to be Joan Shelley” –Rolling Stone\n\nJoan Shelley is a songwriter and singer who draws inspiration from traditional and traditionally-minded performers from her native Kentucky\, as well as those from Ireland\, Scotland\, and England\, but she’s not a folksinger. Her disposition aligns more closely with that of\, say\, Roger Miller\, Dolly Parton\, or Tom T. Hall\, who once explained—simply\, succinctly\, in a song—“I Witness Life.” Her latest release is the 5-song Mood Ring EP. It was praised by The New York Times\, MOJO and Pitchfork.

SUMMARY:Performance:Flamy Grant
DESCRIPTION:“Grant crafts songs with an inexorable flow and irresistible hooks… Air-tight lyrics and a soaring tenor. Grant uses drag to deliver a treasure trove of disarmingly sincere music.” —No Depression\n\nAward-winning and Billboard-charting artist Flamy Grant is a shame-slaying\, hip-swaying\, singing-songwriting drag queen from western North Carolina. Her 2022 debut record\, Bible Belt Baby\, was nominated for Best Pop Album at the San Diego Music Awards and was named one of the Top Ten Queer Country Albums of 2023 by Rainbow Rodeo Magazine. Flamy is a finalist for Artist of the Year at the 2025 International Folk Music Awards and is a winner of the 2023 Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Competition\, a nominee for the 2023 QueerX Award for Best Drag Artist\, and a nominee for the 2023 Queerty Awards Drag Royalty. Both a powerhouse vocalist and an intrepid songwriter\, Flamy blends the evocative art of drag with her iconic mix of country\, gospel\, folk\, and roots music.\n\nIt’s no accident that Flamy’s drag name is an homage to Amy Grant\, the undisputed queen of Christian music and 90s chart-topping pop artist. Much of Flamy’s music centers on the queer spiritual journey\, telling stories of resilience and recovery from religious trauma in a world where LGBTQ+ people are frequently ignored by\, harmed in\, or ejected from religious spaces. With a bold lip\, a big lash\, and a blistering voice\, Flamy drags audiences to a soulful\, uplifting church of her own making.

SUMMARY:Performance:Joe Reilly and The Community Gardeners
DESCRIPTION:Album release concert!\n\n“Exalting love for the planet and its fellow human beings as his main value\, the warm and emotional North American artist Joe Reilly captivates us in an atmosphere of blues\, folk\, and rock where his baritone voice invites us to leave aside prejudice and hatred\, preserving the power of love and individuality.\n\nAs the world becomes more complex and darker\, with rising rates of violence\, intolerance\, and racism\, as well as anxiety and suicide\, human beings seek new alternatives to convey positive and encouraging messages to their fellow human beings. This is why an artist like Joe Reilly seeks to combine his ordinary work activities with music\, as an activist who\, through his music\, seeks to uplift the spirits of all who listen.” ~Cosmonauta Radio\n\nLearn to Love Again is Joe Reilly’s first non-children’s album in over a decade. Appropriate for all ages\, the album shares the depths of Joe’s spiritual journey of healing and transformation.
