SUMMARY:Exhibition:Multiracial Families: Increasing Rapidly
DESCRIPTION:This digital exhibit in the Shapiro Lobby showcases research about and narratives from people across the globe who are part of mixed race families.\n\nIn 1967\, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the Loving v. Virginia case that marriage across racial lines was legal throughout the country. Intermarriage has increased steadily since then: one in five U.S. newlyweds (19%) were married to a person of a different race or ethnicity in 2019\, a more than sixfold increase from 3% in 1967 (Pew Research Center\, 2022).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Bibliophile and the Library: Private-Press Books from the Collection of Bill Heidrich
DESCRIPTION:View beautifully illustrated books that stand as remarkable testaments to the work of twentieth-century small private presses\, which\, in contrast to the trend of mass commercialization\, produced limited editions that celebrated the uniqueness of manual craftsmanship. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Other:Leaves Under the Lens
DESCRIPTION:The leaf surface is a dynamic landscape where tiny\, specialized structures help plants interact with the world around them. Let’s bring this world into view! Join us for an exhibit that highlights the complex and often beautiful anatomy of leaves from the Matthaei collection. Plants throughout the conservatory will be paired with microscope photographs and micro-CT scans that illustrate the otherwise invisible structures that protect leaves from chewing insects\, absorb (or repel!) water\, and even recruit “bodyguards”. You won’t look at leaves the same way again! \n\nThis project is a collaboration between MBGNA and the Weber and Vasconcelos labs in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\, led by PhD student Rosemary Glos.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Falasteen on Screen. *Lyd* (2023) Film Screening & Q&A with filmmakers at the State Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Sci-fi Documentary | 1hr 18 min | Rami Younis and Sarah Ema Friedland | 2025 | Filmmaker Q&A to follow after the film with Rami Younis\, Sarah Ema Friedland\, and Mekarem Eljamal\n \n This feature-length\, sci-fi documentary shares multiple pasts\, presents\, and futures of the city of Lyd in Palestine/Israel. From the perspective of the city herself\, voiced by Palestinian actress Maisa Abd Elhadi\, the viewer is guided through the lifespan of a five-thousand-year-old city and its residents. Lyd was once a thriving Palestinian city with a rich history. In 636AD\, It was even considered the first capital of Palestine. When the State of Israel was founded in 1948\, Lyd became an Israeli city\, and in the process\, hundreds of Lyd’s Palestinian residents were massacred by Israeli forces\, and most of the city’s 50\,000 Palestinian residents were exiled. Today\, the city has a Jewish Israeli majority and a Palestinian minority and is disinvested and divided by racism and violence. For Palestinians\, Lyd’s story is a painful and tragic fall from grace\, which is why our film dares to ask the question: what would the city be like had the Israeli occupation of Lyd never happened?\n \n Using never-before-seen archival footage of the Israeli soldiers who carried out the massacre and expulsion\, the city explains that these events were so devastating that they fractured her reality\, and now there are two Lyds –– one occupied and one free. As the film unfolds\, documentary portions follow a chorus of characters through their daily lives\, creating a tapestry of the Palestinian experience of this city\, and vivid animations use the language of speculative fiction to envision an alternate reality where the same documentary characters live free from the trauma of the past and the violence of the present. As the film cuts between fantastical and documentary realities\, it ultimately leaves the viewer questioning which future should prevail.\n\nThis screening is a part of the Falasteen on Screen Film Festival\, brought to you by Marquee Arts\, Islamic Studies\, Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies\, Middle East Studies\, Arab and Muslim American Studies\, Department of Anthropology\, Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum\, the International Institute\, Program in International and Comparative Studies\, Department of Film\, Television\, & Media\, Imagine Fitness and Yoga\, Palestine Aid Society of America.\n \nThe festival highlights the work of Palestinian filmmakers and serves as a platform for educating audiences about the history\, culture\, and experiences of Palestinians. Our goal is to provide a deeper understanding of life under occupation through compelling narratives that span past and present. The festival will take place in person at both the Michigan and State Theaters in Ann Arbor.\n \n2025 Falasteen on Screen Film Lineup:\nFebruary 17th: Double Feature of Short Films from Gaza: *Ahmad Alive* & *Bisan*\nFebruary 26th: *Life is Beautiful\, A Letter to Gaza*\nMarch 23rd: *Lyd* – Q&A with the filmmaker & U-M alumna\, Mekarem Eljamal\n \n More info: https://marquee-arts.org/FILM-SERIES/\n \n If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact islamicstudies@umich.edu. DESCRIPTION:The annual GenAPA cultural show will be held on Sunday\, March 23rd\, 2025 at the Michigan Theater. With roughly 300 performers and 1\,300 audience members\, GenAPA stands as the largest student-run pan-Asian cultural programs. Promoting cultural diversity through tradition and history remains intrinsic to the core values of GenAPA.\n\nThis year’s theme is “Panorama” which conveys expanding the lens on APIA culture\, moving beyond its typical focus to offer a broader\, more inclusive view. By juxtaposing the narrow scope of a picture with the wide view of a panorama\, we are capturing the diversity and complexity of APIA communities. \n\nIn addition to our headliner\, we have several student groups performing. Our student groups include Michigan Malaysian Student Association\, Filipino American Student Association\, Michigan Masala\, Michigan TAAL\, KGayo3\, VeryUs\, Greenwood\, UM Taekwondo Demonstration Team\, Yuru Band\, Revolution Yoyo\, Muay Thai\, and Moli

SUMMARY:Performance:University Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Join the USO for this performance of the evocative and ultimately optimistic Seventh Symphony by Gustav Mahler\, conducted by its music director Kenneth Kiesler. Sometimes called the Song of the Night\, two of its five movements are nocturnes. One of them is a folksy sort of night-patrol or march\, and the other a romantic serenade\, complete with guitar and mandolin. The movement between them evokes goblins and spirits in a macabre dance. From these nightwalks and nightsongs\, there are bells and drums and brass fanfares\, as a brightly lit and positive view of the world emerges. \n\nKenneth Kiesler\, conductor\n\nPROGRAM\nMahler\, Symphony No. 7

SUMMARY:Performance:Newberry & Verch
DESCRIPTION:A seamless blend of Canadian and Ozark/Appalachian styles\n\nGrowing up\, Joe Newberry and April Verch absorbed traditions of home and hearth – in his Missouri Ozarks and her Ottawa Valley of Canada. Although they are on the road much of the year\, the two musicians are fond of saying that they are rarely homesick\, because their music means they always have a bit of home with them wherever they go.\nJoe Newberry comes from a family of singers and dancers. He took up the guitar and banjo as a boy and learned fiddle tunes from great Missouri fiddlers. April Verch grew up listening to her dad’s country band play for dances in the Ottawa Valley. She started step dancing at age three and fiddling at age six. In a Newberry & Verch show\, delighted audiences see first-hand the roots of their music\, their love of performing\, and their strong musical connection. Original songs join timeless classics. Stories warm the heart\, and give audiences a chance to understand where the music comes from.\n\nKnown around the world for his clawhammer banjo playing\, Newberry is also a powerful guitarist\, singer and songwriter. The Gibson Brothers’ version of his song “Singing As We Rise\,” featuring guest vocalist Ricky Skaggs\, won the 2012 IBMA “Gospel Recorded Performance” Award. With Eric Gibson\, he shared the 2013 IBMA “Song of the Year” Award for “They Called It Music.” A longtime guest on A Prairie Home Companion\, he was a featured singer on the Transatlantic Sessions 2016 tour of the U.K.\, and at the Transatlantic Session’s debut at Merlefest in 2017. \n\nBefore launching her professional career\, Verch was the first woman to win both the Canadian Grand Masters and Canadian Open Fiddling Championships. In 2000\, she formed “The April Verch Band\,” and together they have toured the world\, performing in 18 different countries. She has released 14 solo recordings to date\, receiving JUNO\, Canadian Folk Music and Independent Music nominations and awards for several of those releases. Verch was one of 6 fiddlers who represented the Canadian fiddle tradition to the world at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver\, as part of a segment called “Fiddle Nation” featured in the Opening Ceremonies.\n\nWhether it is the power of two voices lifted in harmony\, or the sound of traditional tunes calling people to get up and move\, these two masters of tradition put on an unforgettable show. And\, when their feet kick up the dust in perfect rhythm and those two voices become one\, Joe Newberry and April Verch make folks remember why this music existed in the first place.
