In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds. As part of Lenhart’s American Women Concert Series\, this recital program celebrates the life\, legacy & music of Aretha Franklin (1942-2018).\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Mathematical GR is the study of gravitation through analysis of the Einstein equations\, which link the matter content of our universe to its geometry. It uses techniques from geometric analysis and nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE) in order to prove rigorous mathematical theorems that answer questions from physics. The first subject in this dissertation is linear first order hyperbolic systems of PDE in a double null foliation. The second is the formation of trapped surfaces in general relativity. Prior to these\, we provide a brief introduction to the main ideas of mathematical general relativity which are featured in this thesis.\n\nA double null foliation is a particular type of foliation of spacetime which is well-suited to the study of gravitational radiation. Gravitational waves propagate along the hypersurfaces defined by a double null foliation. The Bianchi identities for the Riemann curvature of a vacuum spacetime exhibit a hyperbolic structure which has been used to obtain detailed nonlinear estimates on the null curvature components. In the first main work of this dissertation\, we introduce the notion of a double null hyperbolic system of equations and prove a global existence and uniqueness theorem for these systems. We then discuss the relationship between these systems and the Bianchi equations. We also derive a novel algebraic constraint which must be satisfied\, at every point in the spacetime\, by tensor fields satisfying the linearized Bianchi equations (the linearized Bianchi equations are obtained from the usual Bianchi equations by replacing the null Weyl tensor components with unknown tensorfields). This work has potential applications in the study of gravitational waves\, as well as in any system where the null structure is paramount\, such as Einstein-null dust\, Einstein-massless Vlasov\, or Einstein-Maxwell.\n\nIn the second main work of this dissertation\, which is based on joint work with Lydia Bieri\, Neel Patel\, and Pengyu Le\, we prove a trapped surface formation result for a certain class of null dust spacetimes\, extending the seminal work of Christodoulou. This result extends to past null infinity. We show that if the incoming energy due to gravitation or null dust radiation is sufficiently large\, then a trapped surface will form. In particular\, we show that a trapped surface can form solely due to the concentration of null dust radiation\, in the absence of any gravitational energy. Trapped surfaces are closely related to black holes\; a spacetime which contains a closed trapped surface and a complete future null infinity necessarily contains a black hole\, with the trapped surface inside. The initial data constructed in this work is in the large data regime\, is quite general\, and can be arbitrarily far from already containing a trapped surface. New ideas are needed and developed to analyze the matter introduced in this work. Perseverative coping or the chronic and continuous contemplation about symptoms\, causes\, and consequences of distress represents an important\, yet under-explored mechanism that may explain and exacerbate the deleterious consequences of racial discrimination. Drawing from recent and forthcoming work from Dr. Bernard\, this presentation will highlight how perseverative coping can influence the discrimination-mental health link among Black youth and emerging adults. Additionally\, this presentation will discuss the value of considering perseverative coping as a culturally relevant\, malleable intervention target that can reduce negative mental health sequalae in the aftermath of racism-related experiences.\n\nDr. Donte Bernard’s program of research examines the direct and indirect pathways by which racism compromises the mental and behavioral health and well-being of Black children\, adolescents\, and emerging adults. Anchored by cultural ecological models recognizing the importance of risk and resilience at the individual and contextual level\, his research leverages both quantitative and qualitative methods to identify how Black youth identify\, cope with\, and navigate racism-related experiences across sensitive developmental periods. Unlike other articles of incorporation submitted by sixteenth-century Spanish subjects\, their company was time-bound\, authorized for six years\, focused on extracting the sacred guaca (living site of offerings) of Manducalla. Each investor was identified in a different way\, as an index of their race\, gender\, and artisan status: Hernán Garcia\, of African descent (\"mulato\")\; Mari Flores\, \"his wife\" (\"su muger\")\; Blas García\, of Indigenous ancestry (\"mestizo\")\; and Juan Vallejo\, chairmaker (\"sillero\"). In this talk\, I compare the terms of the 1569 contract with a similar proposal awarded in 1636 by Spanish colonial officials\, treasurers Pedro de Sanabria and Juan de los Reyes\, \"discoverers and knowers\" of a guaca whose rights of extraction they seek to award to Father Pedro Garrido. In this lecture\, Vladimir Kara-Murza\, a Russian opposition politician\, author\, historian\, and former political prisoner who was freed as part of a large-scale East-West prisoner exchange in August 2024\, will speak about the opposition\, the state of human rights\, and the struggle for democracy in Putin’s Russia.\n\n Vladimir Kara-Murza is a Russian politician\, author\, historian\, and former political prisoner. A close colleague of the slain opposition leader Boris Nemtsov\, he has served as deputy leader of the People’s Freedom Party and was a candidate for the Russian Parliament. Leading diplomatic efforts on behalf of the opposition\, Kara-Murza played a key role in the adoption of Magnitsky sanctions against top Russian officials by the United States\, United Kingdom\, European Union\, Canada\, and Australia. For this work he was twice poisoned and left in a coma\; a joint media investigation by *Bellingcat*\, *The Insider*\, and *Der Spiegel* has identified FSB officers behind the attacks. In April 2022\, Kara-Murza was arrested in Moscow for publicly denouncing the invasion of Ukraine and the war crimes committed by Russian forces. It’s a sound that has earned its creator more than a half-dozen Juno nominations\, as well as Top 40 success on both sides of the Canadian/American border. Now in her third decade as an artist\, Kathleen Edwards has done more than carry the torch of songwriting heroes like Tom Petty\, Neil Young\, and Lucinda Williams — she’s opened the door for others\, too\, inspiring a new generation of artists who\, like her\, blur the boundaries between genre and generation. \n\nA native of Ottawa\, Ontario\, Edwards was still in her early 20s when she released the critically-acclaimed Failer. The album’s warm\, woozy sound — crystallized on radio hits like “Six O’Clock News” — quickly turned her into one of the era’s alt-country heroes. From the very start\, though\, Edwards’ music seemed to exist somewhere out of time\, resisting categorization even as Failer received a Juno nomination for “Roots & Traditional Album of the Year.” \n\n“No one knew what to call my type of music back then\,” she says of those early years. “The Americana genre didn’t exist yet\, so they couldn’t categorize me. Edwards remains a fan of “ripping guitar riffs and good songs\,” and she’s combining both into a follow-up album co-produced by Grammy-winners Jason Isbell and Gena Johnson that will showcase her legacy as well as her evolution. \n\nShe maintains a presence on the road\, too\, playing her own gigs one minute and sharing shows with her heroes — including Willie Nelson\, John Fogerty\, and Bob Dylan — the next.\n\n“The amount of things I’ve gone through might make someone else quit…but quitting doesn’t quite do it for me\,” she says. “I can’t help but want to write great songs\, connect with people\, and see what’s ahead.
