SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CREES Exhibition. Threading the Needle: Vestiges of Colonialism and Femininity\, an installation by Gluklya
DESCRIPTION:Gluklya’s work is a powerful example of socially engaged art at the intersections of gender\, class\, and cultural identity. By focusing on experiences of female textile workers in Kyrgyzstan\, the artist explores the often-overlooked stories of women affected by Soviet and post-Soviet colonialism. \"Threading the Needle: Vestiges of Colonialism and Femininity\" retells their stories using a diverse range of media — film\, sculpture\, watercolors\, and felt tapestries. Unfolding the implications of economic and societal pressures on women\, Gluklya explores issues of poverty\, isolation\, and exploitation among the garment workers.\n \n Personal stories are woven into a broader social context — such as the legacy of the \"Likbez\" (liquidation of illiteracy) campaign among women in Central Asia during Soviet rule and entrenched patriarchal traditions\, like \"Ala Kachuu\" (bride-kidnapping). This dynamic — where colonization and modernization intertwine the individual lives they touch — raises questions about cultural identity and the ethical borders of decolonized research.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by CREES alumna Dianne Beal (BA REES '79). See more of her work here: https://www.diannebeal.com/curatorial.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at crees@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andy Ross Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The pieces here are from a large series of works made over the last several years. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. He received a BFA degree from College for Creative Studies\, and an MFA degree from University of Michigan. He has taught photography\, art\, and web design at colleges in California and Michigan. His photographs and collages have been exhibited in schools\, galleries\, and museums across the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Angkorian Homecoming
DESCRIPTION:Informed by her experience as a refugee\, Phung Huynh’s projects explore the complexities of displacement\, assimilation\, and cultural negotiation among Cambodian and Vietnamese refugees who have resettled in the United States. She creates detailed graphite portraits on pink donut boxes to highlight the stories of Southeast Asians who have survived war trauma and genocide. Huynh’s serigraph prints about Donut Kids foreground intergenerational gaps as well as bridging the refugee parent and American child through the narratives of Cambodian American children who were raised by donut shop owners in California. Huynh’s most recent work of drawings of Cambodian Buddhist statue heads and photographic prints of decapitated statue bodies on fabric addresses the repatriation of looted Cambodian antiquities in the context of challenging the legacy of colonialism\, unethical museum practices\, and the refugee’s desire to return home. DESCRIPTION:Artist John Rizzo is exhibiting individual mixed-media sculptures that bridge across art\, design\, and craft. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Elizabeth Boyd-Hartmann Dizik Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This body of work represents a playful exploration of form\, color\, and scale through the lens of cellular shapes. Inspired by the complex patterns of biological life\, the pieces are a celebration of growth\, transformation\, and the joy of experimentation. The use of non-precious materials\, such as wood balls and paint\, allowed for a liberating approach to composition and color\, while the spherical forms and circular panels evoke the look of petri dishes—symbolizing both scientific curiosity and organic development.\nBorn in Detroit\, Elizabeth is a multidisciplinary artist and mother based in the metro Detroit area\, where she works from a studio in her home. With a background in bench jewelry\, her earlier work focused on studio jewelry and was represented by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal.\nElizabeth’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. She holds a BA in Jewelry Design\, with First Class Honours\, from Central Saint Martins in London\, a BFA from the University of Michigan\, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, where she specialized in Metalsmithing and Architecture. Her diverse practice spans jewelry\, sculpture\, and installation\, blending materials and techniques to explore themes of production\, growth\, transformation\, and organic form.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Redefining the Crown
DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Bibliophile and the Library: Private-Press Books from the Collection of Bill Heidrich
DESCRIPTION:View beautifully illustrated books that stand as remarkable testaments to the work of twentieth-century small private presses\, which\, in contrast to the trend of mass commercialization\, produced limited editions that celebrated the uniqueness of manual craftsmanship. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Other:Leaves Under the Lens
DESCRIPTION:The leaf surface is a dynamic landscape where tiny\, specialized structures help plants interact with the world around them. Let’s bring this world into view! Join us for an exhibit that highlights the complex and often beautiful anatomy of leaves from the Matthaei collection. Plants throughout the conservatory will be paired with microscope photographs and micro-CT scans that illustrate the otherwise invisible structures that protect leaves from chewing insects\, absorb (or repel!) water\, and even recruit “bodyguards”. You won’t look at leaves the same way again! \n\nThis project is a collaboration between MBGNA and the Weber and Vasconcelos labs in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\, led by PhD student Rosemary Glos.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:8-BIT Music Exhibit: The Gallery
DESCRIPTION:MORE INFO: https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/8bitmusic/ \n\nThe 8-Bit Music Exhibit is a week-long exploration of the creation of the nostalgic\, retro tunes many have grown up with and come to love\, as well as a showcase of how such music has been reclaimed and repurposed for continued existence in the modern world. The gallery plans to guide viewers through a history of 8-bit music\, its significance to media and video games of its time\, and notable figures that influenced the legacy of the niched genre. In the workshop\, participants will learn how modern chiptune artists create music from Game Boys and the production software LSDJ\, and have the opportunity to create music of their own design. Throughout the end of the exhibit week\, we will celebrate the historic and modern legacies of 8-bit music in a set of live performances produced by Norah\, a seasoned chiptune artist.\n\nOur goal in developing this exhibit is to highlight 8-bit/chiptune music as a unique form of digital art celebrated for its sound\, cultural significance\, and innovation. Throughout the lifespans of the original hardware supporting this music\, artists often faced limitations due to hardware constraints. These difficulties led to early video game industry composers inventing new techniques and methods for music creation that have evolved over time and remain influential today.\n\nTHANK YOU to our co-sponsors and partners for your support in the creation of this event!\n-> U-M LSA Technology Services Digital Scholarship (https://lsa.umich.edu/technology-services/services/research-tools/digital-scholarship.html)\n-> U-M Digital Studies Institute (https://www.digitalstudies.umich.edu/)\n-> U-M Arts Initiative (https://arts.umich.edu/arts-initiative)\n-> Neutral Zone (https://www.neutral-zone.org/event-list/2025/4/11/free-tech-workshop-chiptune-8-bit)\n-> Ann Arbor District Libraries (https://aadl.org/)\n-> Ypsilanti District Libraries (https://www.ypsilibrary.org/)\n-> Pinball Pete's in Ann Arbor (https://www.pinballpetes.org/copy-of-east-lansing-location)\n-> Video Game Music Club (VGMC) (https://maizepages.umich.edu/organization/vgmc)\n-> WolvSec (https://wolvsec.org/)\n-> LGBTQ+ Michigan (https://websites.umich.edu/~lgbtqmichigan/#)\n-> Ann Arbor Fighting Game Community at the University of Michigan (FGC) (https://maizepages.umich.edu/organization/a2fgc)

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Brown Bag Seminar | Effective $AdS_3/CFT_2$\; Life is simpler without black holes
DESCRIPTION:The holographic dual to string theory in $AdS_3 x N$ has always been a fundamental question in high-energy theoretical physics. To this day\, we don't know the answer to this question in full generality. In this talk\, I'll propose an effective holographic dual to type IIB string theory in $AdS_3 x N$ in the presence of pure NS-NS flux. The dual boundary CFT takes the form of a p-fold symmetric product of $(R_\phi \times N)$ deformed by a $\phi$-dependent $Z_2$-twisted marginal operator. I'll explain how an exact worldsheet computation allows us to identify this marginal operator. \n\nWhen the radius of $AdS_3$\, $R_{ads}$\, is sub-stringy\, the CFT spectrum doesn't contain neither a normalizable vacuum nor the BTZ black hole states. The proposed holographic duality in this case is an exact one. On the other hand\, when $R_{ads}/l_s >1$\, the full boundary CFT does have a normalizable vacuum and the BTZ black hole states at high energies. The proposed duality in this case is an effective one and holds only for the perturbative string states in the spectrum. Finally\, I'll quote some of the checks that have been performed to test this duality.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:8-BIT Music Exhibit: The Workshop
DESCRIPTION:MORE INFO: https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/8bitmusic/\nRSVP is required. RSVP HERE: https://sessions.studentlife.umich.edu/track/event/session/92827\n\nIN THE WORKSHOP\, participants will learn how modern chiptune artists create music from Game Boys and the production software LSDJ\, and have the opportunity to create music of their own design. This is one featured event of the larger 8-Bit Music Exhibit.\n\nThe 8-Bit Music Exhibit is a week-long exploration of the creation of the nostalgic\, retro tunes many have grown up with and come to love\, as well as a showcase of how such music has been reclaimed and repurposed for continued existence in the modern world. \n\nOur goal in developing this exhibit is to highlight 8-bit/chiptune music as a unique form of digital art celebrated for its sound\, cultural significance\, and innovation. Throughout the lifespans of the original hardware supporting this music\, artists often faced limitations due to hardware constraints. These difficulties led to early video game industry composers inventing new techniques and methods for music creation that have evolved over time and remain influential today.\n\nTHANK YOU to our co-sponsors and partners for your support in the creation of this event!\n-> U-M LSA Technology Services Digital Scholarship (https://lsa.umich.edu/technology-services/services/research-tools/digital-scholarship.html)\n-> U-M Digital Studies Institute (https://www.digitalstudies.umich.edu/)\n-> U-M Arts Initiative (https://arts.umich.edu/arts-initiative)\n-> Neutral Zone (https://www.neutral-zone.org/event-list/2025/4/11/free-tech-workshop-chiptune-8-bit)\n-> Ann Arbor District Libraries (https://aadl.org/)\n-> Ypsilanti District Libraries (https://www.ypsilibrary.org/)\n-> Pinball Pete's in Ann Arbor (https://www.pinballpetes.org/copy-of-east-lansing-location)\n-> Video Game Music Club (VGMC) (https://maizepages.umich.edu/organization/vgmc)\n-> WolvSec (https://wolvsec.org/)\n-> LGBTQ+ Michigan (https://websites.umich.edu/~lgbtqmichigan/#)\n-> Ann Arbor Fighting Game Community at the University of Michigan (FGC) (https://maizepages.umich.edu/organization/a2fgc)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC-CM Seminar | Molecular orbitals in Quantum Magnets and High-temperature Superconductors
DESCRIPTION:Molecular orbitals (MOs) in inorganic crystalline solids arise as a peculiar result of an intricate interplay between structural geometry\, favourable hierarchies of hybridization pathways\, and strong local electronic correlations. When involved in low-energy physics\, MOs often give rise to intriguing physical effects\, expanding experimentally accessible regions of quantum phase diagrams and providing new ways to tune material properties. In this talk\, I will present two examples of quantum MO systems: (1) Ti_4 MnBi_2\, a one dimensional metallic spin-½ system\, and (2) La_3 Ni_2 O_7\, a member of the most recently discovered Ni-based family of high-temperature superconductors. Using these examples\, I will attempt to not only illustrate the rich physics of MOs in action but also highlight the challenges that such systems pose at various levels of condensed matter theory\, from ab initio electronic structure calculations to model-based and analytical approaches.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning Seminar in Algebraic Combinatorics: A Brief History of Intersection Theory (second lecture)
DESCRIPTION:Early remarkable discoveries in intersection theory go back to\n1849\, when algebraic geometry as we know it was just beginning. \nSchubert (and others) during the next half century found\nmany amazing formulas\, but without solid proofs or foundations. \nHilbert's 15th problem asked for such foundations. Providing\nthem involved developments in topology\, algebra\, and algebraic\ngeometry\, although the required rigor remained a challenge for\nsome time. \n\nMy aim is to emphasize some of the less well known parts of this\nstory\, as well as to point out some of the common misconceptions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Minimum Wages and Workplace Injuries with Michael Davies and R Jisung Park
DESCRIPTION:Do minimum wage changes affect workplace health and safety? Using the universe of workers' compensation claims in California over 2000-2019\, we estimate whether minimum wage shocks affect the rate of workplace injuries. Our identification exploits both geographic variation in state- and city-level minimum wages and local occupation-level variation in exposure to minimum wage changes. We find that a 10% increase in the minimum wage increases the injury rate by 11% in an occupation-metro area labor market which is fully exposed to the minimum wage increase. Our results imply an elasticity of the workplace injury rate to minimum-wage-induced wage changes of 1.4. We find particularly large effects on injuries relating to cumulative physical strain\, suggesting that employers respond to minimum wage increases by intensifying the pace of work\, which in turn increases injury risk. A back-of-the-envelope calculation suggests that the increase in injury risk offsets around 10% of the welfare improvement workers see as a result of higher wages.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Hunting for Ghosts with Rare Isotope Doped Advanced Sensors
DESCRIPTION:Nuclear beta and electron capture (EC) decay serve as sensitive probes of the structure and symmetries at the microscopic scale of our Universe. As such\, precision measurements of the final-state products in these processes can be used as powerful laboratories to search for new physics from the meV to TeV scale\, as well as addressing fundamental questions of quantum mechanics at the subatomic scale. Significant advances in “rare isotope” availability and quality\, coupled with decades of sensing technique development from the AMO community have led us into a new era of fundamental tests of nature using unstable nuclei. For the past few years\, we have taken the approach of embedding radioisotopes in thin-film superconducting tunnel junctions (STJs) to precisely measure the recoiling atom that gets an eV-scale “kick” from the neutrino following EC decay. These recoils are encoded with the fundamental quantum information of the neutrino and decay process\, as well as carrying unique signatures of weakly coupled beyond standard model (BSM) physics\; including neutrino mass\, exotic weak currents\, and potential “dark” particles created within the energy-window of the decay. These measurements provide a complimentary and (crucially) model-independent portal to the dark sector with sensitivities that push towards synergy between laboratory and cosmological probes. In this talk\, I will discuss the broad program we have developed to provide leading limits in these areas as well as the technological advances across several sub-disciplines of science required to enable this work\, including subatomic physics\, quantum engineering\, atomic theory\, and materials science. Finally\, I will discuss future prospects of extending this work using macroscopic amounts of harvested exotic atoms from the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) in optically levitated nanospheres for direct momentum measurements of the decay recoils.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Number Theory: The Fontaine-Wintenberger theorem
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Let K be a perfectoid field of mixed characteristic (0\, p). Then\, one can form the tilt K^♭ of K\, which is a perfectoid field of characteristic p. The Fontaine-Wintenberger theorem says that the absolute Galois group of K and the absolute Galois group of K^♭ are isomorphic. In this talk\, we will define the tilting functor and construct its inverse using the Witt vectors. Then\, we will see a more conceptual proof using the almost purity theorem. This proof also motivated Scholze to define perfectoid algebras.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | RF Plasma Cathodes and Other Research Activities in the Plasma Propulsion Group at NRL
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThis talk discusses recent work on RF plasma cathodes\, propellant agnostic electron sources for electric propulsion systems that enable new deep space exploration mission architectures such as in-situ resource utilization. We develop the fundamental theory for these devices and demonstrate its effectiveness at determining I-V characteristics and performance. From our measurements and model\, we project thruster performance and discuss the consequences for space exploration. Then we dive into non-ideal behavior that can be exhibited in these cathodes including sheath expansion and mode transitions. The remainder of the discussion will overview other plasma-related research activities in the NRL propulsion group.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Marcel Georgin is an Aerospace Engineer at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington\, D.C. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physics from McGill University in Montreal\, Canada\, and his Ph.D. in applied physics from the University of Michigan where he studied plasma instabilities in electron sources for electric propulsion systems. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Geometry Seminar: Nontautological Cycles on Moduli Spaces of Smooth Curves
DESCRIPTION:The cohomology of the moduli space of stable curves has been widely studied\, but in general\, understanding the full cohomology ring of this space is too much to ask. Instead\, one generally settles for studying the tautological ring\, a subring of the cohomology that is simultaneously tractable to study and yet rich enough to contain most cohomology classes of geometric interest. The first known example of an algebraic cohomology class that is *not* tautological was discovered by Graber and Pandharipande\, in work that was later significantly generalized by van Zelm to produce an infinite family of non-tautological classes on the moduli space of stable curves. A similar study can be undertaken on the moduli space of smooth curves\, but in this case\, almost no non-tautological classes were previously known. I will report on joint work with V. Arena\, S. Canning\, R. Haburcak\, A. Li\, S.C. Mok\, and C. Tamborini (from the 2023 AGNES Summer School)\, in which we produce non-tautological algebraic classes on the moduli space of smooth curves in an infinite family of cases\, including on M_g for all g>15.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Adaptive Optimal Market Making Strategies with Inventory Liquidation Cost
DESCRIPTION:A novel high-frequency market-making approach in discrete time is proposed that admits closed-form solutions. By taking advantage of demand functions that are linear in the quoted bid and ask spreads with random coefficients\, we model the variability of the partial filling of limit orders posted in a limit order book (LOB). The most important feature of our optimal placement strategy is that it can react or adapt to the behavior of market orders online. Using LOB data\, we train our model and reproduce the anticipated final profit and loss of the optimal strategy on a given testing date using real LOB data. Our adaptive optimal strategies outperform the non-adaptive strategy and those that quote limit orders at a fixed distance from the midprice. We proceed to explore other extensions of the proposed approach.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Center for Emerging Democracies Book Talk. Policing the Revolution: The Transformation of Security and Violence in Venezuela during Chavismo
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom. Zoom registration at https://myumi.ch/XGe2A\n\nSince the mid-2000s Venezuela has been ranked one of the most violent countries in the world as homicides and police violence skyrocketed. Much has been written about the country’s turn to Chavismo but scholarship has ignored what will perhaps be the revolution’s most important legacy: how Chavista policies transformed coercive power and the security landscape.\n \nIn Policing the Revolution\, Rebecca Hanson provides the first in-depth analysis of policing and security policies during the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela\, focusing on the experiences of three groups: police officers\, police reformers\, and residents of neighborhoods most affected by violence. Drawing on ethnographic\, interview\, and survey research collected over ten years\, she analyzes how security policies within the context of the pink tide and later turn to authoritarianism contributed to the expansion of lateral violence and the pluralization of non-state armed actors. Far from the always-already authoritarian project proposed by many scholars and pundits\, Hanson shows that the Bolivarian Revolution was defined by highly contested and contrasting visions of security that resulted in a fragmented and inconsistent ordering of state and society. Moreover\, by pairing the vantage point of street-level police officers with that of ordinary barrio residents\, she provides a unique analysis of how insecurity during revolution was experienced “from below.”\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RTG Seminar on Geometry\, Dynamics and Topology: Selberg\, Ihara and Berkovich
DESCRIPTION:We use the Selberg zeta function to study the limit behavior of resonances of a degenerating family of Kleinian Schottky groups. We prove that\, after a suitable rescaling\, the Selberg zeta functions converge to the Ihara zeta function of a limiting finite graph associated with the relevant non-Archimedean Schottky group acting on the Berkovich projective line. Moreover\, our techniques can be used to obtain effective statements. One key idea is to introduce an intermediate zeta function that captures Archimedean and non-Archimedean information (while the Selberg resp. Ihara zeta function concerns only Archimedean resp. non-Archimedean properties). This is a joint work with Jialun Li\, Carlos Matheus\, and Zhongkai Tao.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Orren C. Mohler Prize Lecture
DESCRIPTION:\"Simulated Universes: Origin and Fate of Our Milky Way\"\n\nGalaxies contain hundreds of billions of stars and display a wide variety of shapes and sizes. But these cosmic lighthouses are just markers for even much vaster structures lying underneath. In fact\, astrophysicists are convinced that the vast majority of the energy and matter content of the Universe does not consist of ordinary matter\, but is dominated by enigmatic dark matter and dark energy components. Supercomputer simulations play a crucial role in testing this seemingly daring cosmological hypothesis. The astonishing performance of today's supercomputers makes it possible to link the relatively simple initial conditions left by the Big Bang directly with the complex\, developed state of the present universe and thus trace the life of galaxies in detail. They show how a cosmic network of dark matter is created over 13 billion years\, at the intersections of which structures of various sizes form\, from small dwarf galaxies to enormous galaxy clusters. The supercomputers also make predictions about the specific formation history of the Milky Way\, and how it should develop in the future. At the same time\, the simulations can also help us to explain extreme phenomena such as the effect of supermassive black holes on the cosmic evolution of galaxies.

SUMMARY:Performance:Shawn Mullins
DESCRIPTION:World class songwriting\n\nAfter a series of indie releases and growing buzz in the Atlanta music scene\, Shawn Mullins’ critical and commercial breakthrough came when 1998 Soul’s Core shot him to fame on the strength of Grammy-nominated No. 1 hit\, “Lullaby” followed by AAA/Americana No. 1 hit “Beautiful Wreck” from 2006’s 9th Ward Pickin’ Parlor. His song\, “Shimmer” was used in promotion of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and was included on the Dawson’s Creek soundtrack. His co-write “All in My Head” from 2008’s Honeydew was featured in episode one of the hit TV sitcom “Scrubs.” Mullins also co-wrote the Zac Brown Band’s No. 1 country tune “Toes.” In early 2002\, he formed supergroup The Thorns with Matthew Sweet and Pete Droge. “No Blue Sky” from the resulting album\, is a modern day classic. \n\nFor the 20th anniversary of his breakthrough album\, Shawn revisited the music of Soul’s Core by recording two new versions of the album. He calls this Soul’s Core Revival. This is not a remix or a remaster of the original\, but rather brand new recordings with new arrangements of the songs – one album is stripped down solo performances\, some on guitar\, some on piano and maybe one a cappella and the second is a new studio recording with his full band\, Soul Carnival.
