SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CREES Exhibition. Threading the Needle: Vestiges of Colonialism and Femininity\, an installation by Gluklya
DESCRIPTION:Gluklya’s work is a powerful example of socially engaged art at the intersections of gender\, class\, and cultural identity. By focusing on experiences of female textile workers in Kyrgyzstan\, the artist explores the often-overlooked stories of women affected by Soviet and post-Soviet colonialism. \"Threading the Needle: Vestiges of Colonialism and Femininity\" retells their stories using a diverse range of media — film\, sculpture\, watercolors\, and felt tapestries. Unfolding the implications of economic and societal pressures on women\, Gluklya explores issues of poverty\, isolation\, and exploitation among the garment workers.\n \n Personal stories are woven into a broader social context — such as the legacy of the \"Likbez\" (liquidation of illiteracy) campaign among women in Central Asia during Soviet rule and entrenched patriarchal traditions\, like \"Ala Kachuu\" (bride-kidnapping). This dynamic — where colonization and modernization intertwine the individual lives they touch — raises questions about cultural identity and the ethical borders of decolonized research.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by CREES alumna Dianne Beal (BA REES '79). See more of her work here: https://www.diannebeal.com/curatorial.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at crees@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andy Ross Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The pieces here are from a large series of works made over the last several years. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. He received a BFA degree from College for Creative Studies\, and an MFA degree from University of Michigan. He has taught photography\, art\, and web design at colleges in California and Michigan. His photographs and collages have been exhibited in schools\, galleries\, and museums across the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Angkorian Homecoming
DESCRIPTION:Informed by her experience as a refugee\, Phung Huynh’s projects explore the complexities of displacement\, assimilation\, and cultural negotiation among Cambodian and Vietnamese refugees who have resettled in the United States. She creates detailed graphite portraits on pink donut boxes to highlight the stories of Southeast Asians who have survived war trauma and genocide. Huynh’s serigraph prints about Donut Kids foreground intergenerational gaps as well as bridging the refugee parent and American child through the narratives of Cambodian American children who were raised by donut shop owners in California. Huynh’s most recent work of drawings of Cambodian Buddhist statue heads and photographic prints of decapitated statue bodies on fabric addresses the repatriation of looted Cambodian antiquities in the context of challenging the legacy of colonialism\, unethical museum practices\, and the refugee’s desire to return home. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Elizabeth Boyd-Hartmann Dizik Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This body of work represents a playful exploration of form\, color\, and scale through the lens of cellular shapes. Inspired by the complex patterns of biological life\, the pieces are a celebration of growth\, transformation\, and the joy of experimentation. The use of non-precious materials\, such as wood balls and paint\, allowed for a liberating approach to composition and color\, while the spherical forms and circular panels evoke the look of petri dishes—symbolizing both scientific curiosity and organic development.\nBorn in Detroit\, Elizabeth is a multidisciplinary artist and mother based in the metro Detroit area\, where she works from a studio in her home. With a background in bench jewelry\, her earlier work focused on studio jewelry and was represented by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal.\nElizabeth’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. She holds a BA in Jewelry Design\, with First Class Honours\, from Central Saint Martins in London\, a BFA from the University of Michigan\, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, where she specialized in Metalsmithing and Architecture. Her diverse practice spans jewelry\, sculpture\, and installation\, blending materials and techniques to explore themes of production\, growth\, transformation\, and organic form.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Redefining the Crown
DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Bibliophile and the Library: Private-Press Books from the Collection of Bill Heidrich
DESCRIPTION:View beautifully illustrated books that stand as remarkable testaments to the work of twentieth-century small private presses\, which\, in contrast to the trend of mass commercialization\, produced limited editions that celebrated the uniqueness of manual craftsmanship. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Climate Anxiety: Equity & Action in Lab and Clinical Spaces
DESCRIPTION:At U-M\, labs and clinical spaces account for 59% of energy use and 63% of emissions. Labs can also produce an estimated 5.5 million tons of plastic waste per year (~2% of all plastic waste produced globally). This means there are big upsides in making your lab and clinical spaces more sustainable!\n\nWe will begin by talking about the impacts of labs and clinical spaces\, particularly surrounding environmental justice concerns with procurement and usage. Ever worried about those pesky nitrile gloves - we’ll be talking about those and even more. Often these are difficult and complex conversations so we will transition into discussing climate anxiety and action. People often associate climate anxiety as being an affluent and white concern\, but the reality is that historically marginalized communities are impacted disproportionately by climate change and do experience climate anxiety. How might we take care of ourselves and our communities? Well\, with nature! Nature is an impactful\, mostly accessible\, and free healthcare intervention. We’ll dive into this and then experience some green time in the beautiful CVC Atrium.

DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Ideas Rents and Firm Growth with Timo Boppart\, Peter Klenow and Reiko Laski
DESCRIPTION:Which firms drive aggregate growth? Price-earnings ratios differ markedly and persistently across publicly-listed firms. Large differences remain after netting out the impact of proxies for firm-specific discount factors\, and are highly correlated with actual and analyst forecasts of future earnings growth. The implication is that listed firms deviate from Gibrat’s Law\, under which expected growth rates are purported to be the same across firms. We find further that fast-growing firms are expected to see increases in their earnings relative to sales\, which we interpret as rents from ideas. We construct an endogenous growth model with persistence shocks to firm innovation step-sizes and calibrate it to match patterns in the data. The model implies that the fastest-growing firms – so-called Luttmer Rockets – are responsible for a much bigger share of aggregate growth than predicted under Gibrat’s Law.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Prelim Seminar Series - A Feeling for the Organism: Understanding Trait Evolution in Polypore Mushrooms
DESCRIPTION:Talk Title: A Feeling for the Organism: Understanding Trait Evolution in Polypore Mushrooms\n\nSummary: My project proposal broadly investigates macrofungal evolution through a specific focus on sporocarp traits. For this\, I use two different species of wood-inhabiting fungi that produce fruiting bodies having a poroid hymenophore (porous spore producing layer on the underside of the mushroom)\, commonly referred to as polypores. Polypores\, which form a polyphyletic group within Basidiomycota\, are unique in harboring species that produce annual and perennial hardy\, poroid fruiting bodies which can remain exposed to the external environment and maintain functionality for long periods of time. Unlike the fruiting bodies of a majority of macrofungal species\, given the persistence of certain polypore fruiting bodies on their wood-substrate over extended time periods\, species within Polyporaceae are suitable for investigating the evolution of life history traits and adaptation in macrofungi. My PhD project will focus on two established traits- colour polymorphism and longevity\; and will further use population genetics to identify traits that may be important for local adaptation. The first two chapters will be focussing on Trametes versicolor (aka Turkey Tail) which is a highly colour polymorphic\, globally distributed\, hardwood decay fungus found growing on a wide range of hardwood species. Using T. versicolor\, I firstly aim to uncover if colour polymorphism in the species is linked to the wood species it grows on or if it is a heritable trait\; and secondly\, aim to determine whether it has population structuring across its geographic distribution\, and local adaptation to each habitat of occurrence. In my third chapter\, I propose to use Ganoderma applanatum (aka Artist’s conk) which has a perennial fruiting body that remains functional and fertile for several years to investigate senescence and the evolution of this alternate life history strategy.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Contributions to Distributed Learning and Selective Inference
DESCRIPTION:The rapid growth and distributed nature of modern datasets pose significant challenges in statistical learning and inference. Privacy concerns often prohibit direct data sharing across sites\, while distributional heterogeneity complicates accurate modeling and inference. Moreover\, high-dimensional data and model selection procedures necessitate statistical methods for valid inference post-selection. This dissertation addresses these challenges by developing methodologies in distributed statistical learning\, inference with heterogeneous data\, and selective inference.\n\nIn the first part of the dissertation\, we propose a novel one-shot distributed learning algorithm via refitting bootstrap samples. We demonstrate that the proposed estimator achieves full-sample statistical rates with only one round of communication of subsample-based statistics in generalized linear models and noisy phase retrieval. We further extend this approach to an iterative algorithm and apply it to convolutional neural networks (CNNs)\, which exhibits superior performances over existing methods in simulation studies.\n\nIn the second part of the dissertation\, we develop a novel one-shot distributed learning algorithm to address cross-site heterogeneity. The proposed method effectively accommodates heterogeneity by allowing nuisance parameters to vary across sites. We show that the proposed estimator attains the full-sample statistical error rate and efficiency with only a single round of communication of local estimators. Our simulation studies support these theoretical findings.\n\nIn the third part of the dissertation\, we introduce an asymptotic pivot to infer about the effects of selected variables on conditional quantile functions. Utilizing estimators from smoothed quantile regression\, our proposed pivot is easy to compute and yields asymptotically-exact selective inference without making strict distributional assumptions about the response variable. By employing external randomization\, our approach fully utilizes the data for both selection and inference\, outperforming traditional methods like data splitting by consistently delivering shorter and more reliable confidence intervals. Simulation studies and an empirical application analyzing risk factors for low birth weight validate the practical efficacy of our method.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CAV Pilot Development and Deployment in Midwest Winter
DESCRIPTION:Research from Purdue University presents a novel approach for deploying Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) in challenging Midwest winter environments through the integration of Vision Language Models (VLMs). The system addresses the critical safety and mobility challenges posed by winter conditions through a VLM capable of interpreting complex visual scenes and natural language instructions to generate personalized control strategies. The framework incorporates a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) memory module that enables continuous adaptation to individual preferences through human feedback. Real-world experiments conducted on professional test tracks demonstrate that our approach reduces takeover rates by up to 76.9% compared to baseline systems\, particularly when processing indirect user instructions. The system successfully interprets diverse winter driving scenarios\, maintaining high safety standards while adapting control parameters to both environmental conditions and user preferences. A comprehensive benchmark dataset\, focused specifically on winter driving conditions\, provides a foundation for future CAV development in extreme weather. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Prelim Seminar Series - Life in Plastic\, It’s Fantastic: The microbial metabolisms of polyethylene and the implications for social phenotypes
DESCRIPTION:Talk title: Life in Plastic\, It’s Fantastic: The microbial metabolisms of polyethylene and the implications for social phenotypes\n\nSummary: Microbes are responsible for breaking down recalcitrant organic matter like lignin and chitin and thus reintroducing those molecules back into nutrient cycles. To do so\, these microbes invest lots of energy into creating powerful arsenals of enzymes. These microbes are now challenged globally with novel recalcitrant polymers known collectively as plastic. Studies have found that there is little to no correlation of plastic degrading enzymes and the amount of plastic in the environment- leading to the conclusion that in general\, microbes are not evolving to specialize on plastic degradation. However there is yet to be a satisfactory explanation as to why environmental degradation is so limited.\n\nWhile many microbial enzymes have been tested or hypothesized to degrade plastic\, research on plastic biodegradation has primarily focused on one species at a time\, and very few have been proven to work with polyethylene\, the most widely used and hardest to degrade plastic. My dissertation will focus on characterizing microbial metabolisms of PE and its degradation products\, and using these characteristics to predict the ecological relationship between members of a small modular community. This research will connect microbial metabolisms and ecology to investigate why environmental degradation is limited\, and how metabolisms impact the function of plastic degrading synthetic consortia.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Recent advances in optical nanoscopy with quantum materials
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will introduce two emerging optical nanoscopy techniques and the new science they enable. These techniques\, namely magneto-scanning near-field optical microscopy (m-SNOM) and BOlometric Superconducting Optical Nanoscopy (BOSON)\, can dramatically expand our ability to probe quantum materials at the nanoscale. Using m-SNOM\, we demonstrate Landau-level nanoscopy that directly visualizes Landau quantization and magneto-polariton formation. A waveguide quantum electrodynamics (QED) framework reveals spatially resolved hybridization between magnetic excitations and phonon polaritons\, yielding universal scaling behaviors and design principles for cavity metastructures with tunable light–matter coupling. With BOSON\, we integrate superconducting transition-edge sensors with near-field optics to achieve ultra-sensitive detection of nano-light at nanowatt power levels. This platform enables nanoscale imaging of Cooper pair dynamics and confined bosonic modes in low-dimensional systems\, offering a new pathway toward quantum-limited spectroscopy and single-polariton detection. I will conclude by discussing future directions\, including the integration of these techniques for exploring THz quantum optics\, polaritonic circuitry\, and strongly correlated quantum phases in complex materials. \n\nMengkun Liu (Ph.D. 2012 Boston University) is a professor at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Stony Brook University (since Jan. 2015). SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EHAP Lecture Series: Lab Mice in Naturalistic Environments: A New Model for Understanding Causal Social Impacts on Individuality\, Physiology\, and Fitness
DESCRIPTION:Social factors have long been associated with individual variation in behavior\, physiology\, health\, and survival in non-human animals and humans. Yet\, establishing the causality of these social influences and the mechanisms by which they act has been challenging. Among wild animals\, uncontrollable genetic and environmental variation frustrates causal conclusions. And lab environments are unable to replicate the dynamic\, complex social behaviors of natural populations. In this talk\, I describe a solution to this problem: studying genetically identical laboratory mice in controlled\, naturalistic outdoor enclosures. In such environments\, mice navigate complex\, dynamic physical and social environments that better match those that they evolved to exploit. I will describe work in which I have established the impact of social competition and luck on the development of individuality\, causal links between social status and behavior and fitness outcomes in males\, and the causal impact of social status on molecular physiology. The combination of behavioral ecological methods and theory with the scientific power of the lab mouse has opened up exciting new doors to answer questions that have been previously unanswerable either in the lab or in wild populations.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:From Helicases to CRISPR: How RNA Stability and Specificity Shape Biology
DESCRIPTION:The fundamental properties of the RNA double helix—high structural stability and strict base-pairing specificity—have profoundly influenced biological systems throughout evolutionary history and up to today. While the stability allows helices to serve as rigid scaffolds within structured RNAs\, it also creates significant energetic barriers to rearrangement\, necessitating RNA helicases as chaperones in RNA folding and remodeling. At the same time\, the high specificity of Watson-Crick base pairing enables RNA-guided mechanisms\, exemplified by CRISPR-Cas enzymes that leverage this specificity for DNA targeting. This talk will explore how these core biophysical properties have shaped RNA’s biological roles\, driven evolution of protein families\, and enabled modern genome-editing tools.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Ziwet Colloquium Lecture: From Phase Separation in Heterogeneous Media to Learning Training Schemes for Image Denoising
DESCRIPTION:What do these two themes have in common? Both are treated variationally\, both deal with energies of different dimensionalities\, concepts of geometric measure theory prevail in both\, and higher order penalizations are considered. Will learning training schemes for choosing these penalizations in imaging may be of use in phase transitions?\n\nPhase Separation in Heterogeneous Media: Modern technologies and biological systems\, such as temperature-responsive polymers and lipid rafts\, take advantage of engineered inclusions\, or natural heterogeneities of the medium\, to obtain novel composite materials with specific physical properties. To model such situations using a variational approach based on the gradient theory of phase transitions\, the potential and the wells may have to depend on the spatial position\, even in a discontinuous way\, and different regimes should be considered.\n\nIn the critical case where the scale of the small heterogeneities is of the same order of the scale governing the phase transition and the wells are fixed\, the interaction between homogenization and the phase transitions process leads to an anisotropic interfacial energy. The supercritical case for fixed wells is also addressed\, now leading to an isotropic interfacial energy. In the subcritical case with moving wells\, where the heterogeneities of the material are of a larger scale than that of the diffuse interface between different phases\, it is observed that there is no macroscopic phase separation and that thermal fluctuations play a role in the formation of nanodomains.\n\nLearning Training Schemes for Image Denoising: Due to their ability to handle discontinuous images while having a well-understood behavior\, regularizations with total variation (TV) and total generalized variation (TGV) are some of the best known methods in image denoising. However\, like other variational models including a fidelity term\, they crucially depend on the choice of their tuning parameters. A remedy is to choose these automatically through multilevel approaches\, for example by optimizing performance on noisy/clean image training pairs. Such methods with space-dependent parameters which are piecewise constant on dyadic grids are considered\, with the grid itself being part of the minimization. Existence of minimizers for discontinuous parameters is established\, and it is shown that box constraints for the values of the parameters lead to existence of finite optimal partitions. Improved performance on some representative test images when compared with constant optimized parameters is demonstrated.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Breakfast of Champions
DESCRIPTION:Watch the 1999 movie Breakfast of Champions (1hr 40min)\, and stay for a post-screening Q&A with Director Alan Rudolph. Purchase tickets from the Michigan Theater (https://myumi.ch/G21x4).\n\nTwenty-five years after its initial release\, Kurt Vonnegut’s biting portrayal of America’s mad chaos returns in a restored 4K version. Directed by the brilliant Alan Rudolph and starring Bruce Willis\, Nick Nolte\, and Albert Finney\, this zany and incisive film has been overlooked for far too long.\n\n\"Breakfast of Champions\" tells the story of Dwayne Hoover (Bruce Willis)\, a famous car dealer and the most respected man in Midland City. The American success formula has left Dwayne rich and famous but also empty and suicidal. He suspects dark motives emanating from his wife (Barbara Hershey)\, his sales manager (Nick Nolte)\, and his lover/secretary (Glenne Headly). When Dwayne has a volatile\, astonishing encounter with outrageous science fiction writer Kilgore Trout (Albert Finney) at the Midland City Fine Arts Festival\, neither they nor the city is ever the same.\n\nPresented by the Michigan Theater\; the University of Michigan Department of Film\, Television\, and Media\; and the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Performance:Gruff Rhys (Solo)
DESCRIPTION:Gruff Rhys is a songwriter\, producer and award-winning storyteller from Bethesda in Wales who has consistently sought a variety of outlets for the spectrum of muses behind his creative flights. Formerly most well known as the frontman of Super Furry Animals – a band that has been able to achieve that rarest of mixes\, artistic adventure with popular devotion – he blended fuzz-filed rock\, pure harmonies and cutting edge electronics\, while with his other band\, Neon Neon\, Rhys has documented the lives of maverick car maker John DeLorean and Italian activist and publisher Giangiacomo Feltrinelli in widescreen style. \n\nWith their blissful melodies\, his solo records have explored untapped areas lyrically too. His first\, 2005's Yr Atal Genhedlaeth\, revelled in Welsh puns\; 2014’s American Interior celebrated the unlikely yet influential 18th century explorer John Evans\; Babelsberg offered a baroque take on the modern world in 2018\; while a year later Pang! created a multi-lingual mash-up\, driven by folkish bleeps crafted in collaboration with South African artist-producer Muzi.\n\nHowever\, while all those records certainly explored fresh territory\, the Top Ten charting Seeking New Gods climbed lyrically and musically on to totally new terrain - for his seventh solo record Gruff Rhys created a conceptual record about his own mountain and became his most critically and commercially successful solo album yet. 2024 saw the release of it’s follow up\, ‘Sadness Sets Me Free’ garnering rave reviews and acclaimed to be amongst his finest work.

SUMMARY:Performance:Pierre Bensusan - One Guitar\, One Voice - 50th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:\"Pierre Bensusan is one of the truly gifted musicians of our time - he plays the guitar as if it was the very soul of himself.” –George Winston\n\nFrench-Algerian acoustic guitar virtuoso\, vocalist and composer Pierre Bensusan\, surnamed “Mister DADGAD”\, has taken his unique sound to all corners of the globe. Winner of the Independent Music Award for his triple live album \"Encore\"\, voted Best World Music Guitarist by Guitar Player Magazine reader’s Poll\, winner of the Rose d’Or at the Montreux Festival for his debut album\, Pierre is recognized as one of the greatest guitar players of the 21st century.\n\nWhen Michael Hedges titles one of his compositions “Bensusan”\, you know that the inspiration behind it must be special and Pierre Bensusan certainly is. Guitarists from Leo Kottke to Larry Corryel\, to Tuck Andress\, Tommy Emmanuel\, Mark Knopfler\, Andrew York\, Andy Timmons\, to Steve Lukather… have sung his praises\, and Steve Vai released three Bensusan albums on his label Favored Nations. And it's not just guitarists who are so inspired by Pierre's music\, as a recent studio collaboration with him on Donny Osmond’s latest album “Start Again” goes to show.\n\nIf World Music means the fusion of traditional\, contemporary\, jazz\, classical and pop music\, then Bensusan is one of the most eloquent World Music musicians of our time. A pianist in his beginnings then self-taught on the guitar\, the originality of his style makes him one of today’s greatest guitarists and composers for the instrument. \n\nBorn in French Algeria\, Pierre Bensusan is an adventurer of unusual lands. His almost “sacred” music is an intimate and orchestral hymn\, a solo crossing on a multi-shell Lowden guitar subjected to the natural elements with sound molecules and finger pulp on an ebony fingerboard for open tuning - an unique and transparent technique\, under the fingers of an adventurous pilgrim. Big emotion guaranteed.
