SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CREES Exhibition. Threading the Needle: Vestiges of Colonialism and Femininity\, an installation by Gluklya
DESCRIPTION:Gluklya’s work is a powerful example of socially engaged art at the intersections of gender\, class\, and cultural identity. By focusing on experiences of female textile workers in Kyrgyzstan\, the artist explores the often-overlooked stories of women affected by Soviet and post-Soviet colonialism. \"Threading the Needle: Vestiges of Colonialism and Femininity\" retells their stories using a diverse range of media — film\, sculpture\, watercolors\, and felt tapestries. Unfolding the implications of economic and societal pressures on women\, Gluklya explores issues of poverty\, isolation\, and exploitation among the garment workers.\n \n Personal stories are woven into a broader social context — such as the legacy of the \"Likbez\" (liquidation of illiteracy) campaign among women in Central Asia during Soviet rule and entrenched patriarchal traditions\, like \"Ala Kachuu\" (bride-kidnapping). This dynamic — where colonization and modernization intertwine the individual lives they touch — raises questions about cultural identity and the ethical borders of decolonized research.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by CREES alumna Dianne Beal (BA REES '79). See more of her work here: https://www.diannebeal.com/curatorial.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at crees@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andy Ross Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The pieces here are from a large series of works made over the last several years. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. He received a BFA degree from College for Creative Studies\, and an MFA degree from University of Michigan. He has taught photography\, art\, and web design at colleges in California and Michigan. His photographs and collages have been exhibited in schools\, galleries\, and museums across the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Angkorian Homecoming
DESCRIPTION:Informed by her experience as a refugee\, Phung Huynh’s projects explore the complexities of displacement\, assimilation\, and cultural negotiation among Cambodian and Vietnamese refugees who have resettled in the United States. She creates detailed graphite portraits on pink donut boxes to highlight the stories of Southeast Asians who have survived war trauma and genocide. Huynh’s serigraph prints about Donut Kids foreground intergenerational gaps as well as bridging the refugee parent and American child through the narratives of Cambodian American children who were raised by donut shop owners in California. Huynh’s most recent work of drawings of Cambodian Buddhist statue heads and photographic prints of decapitated statue bodies on fabric addresses the repatriation of looted Cambodian antiquities in the context of challenging the legacy of colonialism\, unethical museum practices\, and the refugee’s desire to return home. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Elizabeth Boyd-Hartmann Dizik Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This body of work represents a playful exploration of form\, color\, and scale through the lens of cellular shapes. Inspired by the complex patterns of biological life\, the pieces are a celebration of growth\, transformation\, and the joy of experimentation. The use of non-precious materials\, such as wood balls and paint\, allowed for a liberating approach to composition and color\, while the spherical forms and circular panels evoke the look of petri dishes—symbolizing both scientific curiosity and organic development.\nBorn in Detroit\, Elizabeth is a multidisciplinary artist and mother based in the metro Detroit area\, where she works from a studio in her home. With a background in bench jewelry\, her earlier work focused on studio jewelry and was represented by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal.\nElizabeth’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. She holds a BA in Jewelry Design\, with First Class Honours\, from Central Saint Martins in London\, a BFA from the University of Michigan\, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, where she specialized in Metalsmithing and Architecture. Her diverse practice spans jewelry\, sculpture\, and installation\, blending materials and techniques to explore themes of production\, growth\, transformation\, and organic form.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Redefining the Crown
DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Bibliophile and the Library: Private-Press Books from the Collection of Bill Heidrich
DESCRIPTION:View beautifully illustrated books that stand as remarkable testaments to the work of twentieth-century small private presses\, which\, in contrast to the trend of mass commercialization\, produced limited editions that celebrated the uniqueness of manual craftsmanship. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES Noon Lecture. Women’s Forgotten Revolution: Communism and the Struggle for Emancipation in Post-war Poland
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will analyze female participation in shaping the socialist modernization of post-World War II Poland and women's emancipation through education and culture. Competent and dedicated female politicians and civil servants (e.g.\, Żanna Kormanowa\, Zofia Dembińska\, Eugenia Krassowska) steered the reform of the Polish educational system immediately after the Second World War and during the Stalinist period\, creating a project for a school that was supposed to be egalitarian in terms of class and gender. At the same time\, editors of magazines and publishing houses (e.g.\, Anna Lanota\, Halina Koszutska)\, writers (e.g.\, Wanda Żółkiewska\, Janina Dziarnowska\, Helena Bobińska)\, and film directors\, scriptwriters\, and pedagogical advisors to Polish television (e.g.\, Wilhelmina Skulska\, Elżbieta Jackiewiczowa) were committed to shaping the image of the new Polish woman: well-educated and professionally active. The role of these “architects of communist Poland” diminished with de-Stalinization\, but many of them continued their work\, such as representing Poland in international institutions including the UN Commission on the Status of Women and UNESCO. Mrozik will address the absence of post-war leftist women's activism in current historiography in Poland and will discuss recent developments in the field.\n \n Agnieszka Mrozik is a Senior Dianne Widzinski Visiting Fellow at the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies (CCPS) at U-M. She is an associate professor of literary studies at the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences. She is affiliated with two research units—the Center for Cultural and Literary Studies of Communism and the Women’s Archive. She was a fellow of the Imre Kertész Kolleg in Jena (2017)\, the Institute for Advanced Study at CEU (2018/19)\, and the DAAD program at the University of Hamburg (2019). She was also recently a guest professor at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) (2023/24). Mrozik is the author of *Architektki PRL-u: Komunistki\, literatura i emancypacja kobiet w powojennej Polsce* [*Female Architects of the Polish People’s Republic: Communist Women\, Literature\, and Women’s Emancipation in Postwar Poland*] (Wydawnictwo IBL PAN\, 2022) and *Akuszerki transformacji: Kobiety\, literatura i władza w Polsce po 1989 roku* [*Midwives of the Transformation: Women\, Literature\, and Power in Post-1989 Poland*] (Wydawnictwo IBL PAN\, 2012). She has co-authored and co-edited several collective volumes\, including *Reassessing Communism: Concepts\, Culture\, and Society in Poland\, 1944–1989* (CEU Press\, 2021).\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Tariffs\, Taxes\, and the Rise of Presidential Power
DESCRIPTION:Explore the shift in U.S. political dynamics\, focusing on the decline of congressional oversight over tariffs and the rise of executive power\, particularly during the Trump administration. Led by Dr. Mitch Sollenberger\, this talk examines the factors that led Congress to move away from tariffs and how this reflects broader changes in the relationship between Congress and the president. We’ll also address the rise of \"presidentialism\" and the centralization of executive authority\, highlighting how Trump's presidency reshaped governing norms and public policy.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EXPERIMENTALLY VALIDATING WELFARE EVALUATION OF SCHOOL VOUCHERS
DESCRIPTION:We leverage a unique two-stage experiment that randomized access to private school vouchers across markets as well as students to estimate the revealed preference value of school choice. To do this\, we estimate several choice models on data only from control markets before turning to the treatment data for model validation. This exercise reveals that a model where school choice is constrained by ability-to-pay achieves better out-of-sample fit but still underpredicts experimental take-up of the voucher offer. We then present evidence from treatment markets that: a) the voucher offer also induced search\; and b) private schools used program surplus to incentivize enrollment. Further\, we show that a unified model incorporating these features can explain both the control and treatment data patterns. Estimates from that model imply that a targeted voucher program would have a marginal value of public funds(MVPF) of at least 3.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning Seminar in Algebraic Combinatorics: Projective system of posets from set partitions
DESCRIPTION:It is known when we call a poset P\, a P-chain permutational poset\, given a subset of permutations\nP of the symmetric group S_n. In this work\, we use the same idea to study subsets of words of length n\,\nthat are not necessarily permutations\, for example: especially when they are certain classes of restricted\ngrowth functions induced by set partitions in standard form over [n] = {1\, 2 · · · n}. Varying n only\, and\nalso varying n and k (the number of blocks of the set partitions) simultaneously\, we can show that those\nposets form a projective system of trees and lattices. These poset structures can be extended over signed\nrestricted growth functions for standard type B set partitions over 〈n〉 = {−1\, −2\, · · · n\, 0\, 1\, 2 · · · n} as\nwell. We investigate properties of the tree and lattice structures of these projective systems.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CANCELLED - Department Colloquium | The Effect of Modest Pressures on the Synthesis of Chalcogenides and Halides
DESCRIPTION:Although temperature and composition are common synthetic variables in solid state chemistry\, pressure is not. This may be in part due to the expense of the apparatus needed and in part because we work in a target-rich environment with many viewpoints and a large periodic table. I purchased a Walker type synthetic system about 30 years ago that\, in recent years especially\, has been worth the trouble it takes to use it. The pressure is relatively low in such systems compared to what one gets in a diamond cell\, but the sample volumes are much larger. The system was purchased from a small company called Rockland Research\, run by Peter McNutt\, who\, if I understand correctly\, was one of the former group members of David Walker himself. Our Depths of the Earth system\, although nominally easier to use\, is in fact not easier to prepare samples for\, and might be the only thing in my lab that I ever discarded out of frustration.\n\nSeveral postdoctoral fellows and graduate students have succeeded in finding new materials in our system or modifying it\, but the major successes in recent years has been due to the patience and synthetic skill of my former postdoctoral fellow now lab manager Danrui Ni. Many new materials\, including oxides chalcogenides and halides have been found in our system\, and it is my intention to describe enough of our work in the latter two categories of materials to give interested audience members ideas about what works at applied pressures up to 6 GPa and what doesn’t.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:GISC Rabbi Elliott T. Spar Politics and Culture in the Muslim World Series. Book Launch: *The Revolution Within: Islamic Media and the Struggle for a New Egypt*
DESCRIPTION:Book Launch: *The Revolution Within: Islamic Media and the Struggle for a New Egypt *by Dr. Yasmin Moll\n \n RSVP: http://bit.ly/RevolutionWithin416\n Wednesday\, April 16\, 4:00 PM ET\n CupsnChai Ann Arbor\n 214 S 4th Ave\n \n Join the Global Islamic Studies Center at CupsnChai Ann Arbor on Wednesday\, April 16\, at 4pm for the book launch of Professor Yasmin Moll's new book\, *The Revolution Within: Islamic Media and the Struggle for a New Egypt*. This event will be moderated by Professor Andrew Shryock\, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan. Free chai & snacks will be provided!\n \nAbout the book:\nThe New Preachers of Egypt—so named because of their novel preaching styles\, which incorporate everything from melodrama to music to self-help—came to prominence on the world's first Islamic television channel on the cusp of the Arab Spring uprisings. They promoted an innovative and inclusive Islamic piety that millions of young middle-class viewers found radical and compelling—but were scorned as neoliberal by leftists\, as stealth Islamists by secularists\, and as too Westernized by other Muslim preachers.\n \n Drawing on long-term fieldwork with the New Preachers\, their producers\, and followers in Cairo\, Yasmin Moll shows how Islamic media and the social life of theology mattered to contestations over the shape of a New Egypt. These mass-mediated fractures within Islamic Revivalism were happening at a time of both revolutionary possibility and authoritarian entrenchment. The New Preachers' Islamic media inspired a \"revolution within\" that transcended the country's divisions and anticipated the ethos of creativity\, solidarity\, and coexistence that soon would mark Tahrir Square\, the ethical epicenter of the 2011 uprising. Vividly written and boldly theorized\, The Revolution Within challenges conventional accounts of the 2011 revolution and its aftermath as a struggle between secular and religious forces\, reconsidering what makes a practice virtuous\, a public Islamic\, a way of life Godly.\n \n \n \n About the author:\n \n Yasmin Moll is an assistant professor at the University of Michigan in the Department of Anthropology. Her new book\, *The Revolution Within: Islamic Media and the Struggle for a New Egypt*\, is out with Stanford University Press in the series Studies in Islamic and Middle Eastern Societies and Cultures. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Optimal PhiBE — A Model-Free PDE-Based Framework for Continuous-Time Reinforcement Learning
DESCRIPTION:This talk addresses continuous-time reinforcement learning (RL) in settings where the system dynamics are governed by a stochastic differential equation but remains unknown\, with only discrete-time observations available. While the optimal Bellman equation (optimal-BE) enables model-free algorithms\, its discretization error is significant when the reward function oscillates. Conversely\, model-based PDE approaches offer better accuracy but suffer from non-identifiable inverse problems. \nTo bridge this gap\, we introduce Optimal-PhiBE\, an equation that integrates discrete-time information into a PDE\, combining the strengths of both RL and PDE formulations. Compared to the RL formulation\, Optimal-PhiBE is less sensitive to reward oscillations\, leading to smaller discretization errors. In linear-quadratic control\, Optimal-PhiBE can even achieve accurate continuous-time optimal policy with only discrete-time information. Compared to the PDE formulation\, it skips the identification of the dynamics and enables model-free algorithm derivation. Furthermore\, we extend Optimal-PhiBE to higher orders\, providing increasingly accurate approximations.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student AIM Seminar: A fluid dynamical swimming lesson: the tale of two length scales
DESCRIPTION:Nature can provide us with important lessons on how to swim efficiently in a variety of situations. Though scallops can swim in the ocean by opening and closing their valves\, the scallop theorem shows that this swimming mechanism would be ineffective in highly viscous conditions. In this regime\, the Navier-Stokes equations linearize to give the Stokes equations. Since the Stokes equations are time-reversible\, microorganisms have developed hair-like structures known as cilia in order to generate propulsion by breaking time-reversal symmetry. The squirmer model uses a slip velocity defined on the microswimmer surface to mimic the effect of beating cilia. There has been previous work on spherical and axisymmetric squirmers\, but nature is not necessarily axisymmetric – thus\, we explore microswimmers of arbitrary shape. We propose a framework for expressing the slip velocity on an arbitrary surface in terms of tangential basis functions. Using the reciprocal theorem\, given a time-independent slip profile\, we can determine the rigid body velocities and the resulting swimming trajectory for an isolated microswimmer suspended in free space.\n\n\nAt much larger length scales\, flexible swimming sheets can be used to transport solar panels on water and can even model ice sheets on the ocean. In this regime\, the inviscid Euler equations hold. Unlike the Stokes equations\, the Euler equations are nonlinear and time-dependent. However\, the boundary integral techniques that are commonly used in Stokes flow can also be used in this context to track the motion of the water-air interface. We will showcase preliminary results in which we test our numerical methods on linear and nonlinear water waves in the absence of a sheet. We will then discuss how the slithering motion of snakes can help us model the elastic sheets.

Changing the dots' size and shape gives rise to many applications that permeate our daily lives\, such as the new Samsung QLED TV monitor that uses quantum dots to turn \"light into perfect color\"! \n\nQuantum dots are obtained via the deposition of a crystalline overlayer (epitaxial film) on a crystalline substrate. When the thickness of the film reaches a critical value\, the profile of the film becomes corrugated and islands (quantum dots) form. As the creation of quantum dots evolves with time\, materials defects appear. Their modelling is of great interest in materials science since material properties\, including rigidity and conductivity\, can be strongly influenced by the presence of defects such as dislocations. \n\nIn this talk\, we will use methods from the calculus of variations and partial differential equations to model and mathematically analyze the onset of quantum dots\, the regularity and evolution of their shapes\, and the nucleation and motion of dislocations. Further\, using the $H^{-1}$-gradient flow structure of the evolution law\, short-time existence for a surface diffusion evolution equation with curvature regularization is established in the context of epitaxially strained two-dimensional films. The main novelty\, as compared to the study of the wetting regime\, is the presence of moving contact lines.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Science Café: Becoming Our Best Selves—One \"Like\" at a Time
DESCRIPTION:As of 2024\, 72.5% of the U.S. population—approximately 246 million people—used social media sites like Facebook\, Instagram\, X\, Snapchat\, TikTok\, and Mastodon. Even though many people have shuttered their accounts in the wake of an increasingly polarized political climate\, social media is still one of the primary ways we connect with one another.\n\nResearch on the toxic impacts of social media are abundant\, but these online platforms can also help us build community and support each other.\n\nDr. David Jurgens works at the intersection of computational space and social sciences. His research in artificial intelligence (AI) aims to understand how social media influences our well-being. Unlike the vast majority of social media research\, which focuses on how social media can cause harm\, Jurgens’ experimental work develops new AI-based tools with the hope of helping people online better engage with each other.\n\nDr. Yanna Krupnikov\, Professor of Communication and Media\, studies political expression and polarization on social media. Krupnikov has co-authored a number of books on the topic\, including the recently published Partisan Hostility and American Democracy: Explaining Political Divisions and When They Matter (2024\, University of Chicago Press).\n\nHors d’oeuvres will be served at 5:30 p.m.\, and the program begins at 6:00 p.m.\nSeating is limited—come early.\nFree and open to the public.\nUMMNH would like to thank Conor O’Neill’s for 15+ years of support for our Science Cafés.

Critics tripped over themselves with praise\, calling it “the most original and provocative American movie in a very long time” and “the movie sensation that all other American movies this year will be measured against.” The cast includes Lily Tomlin\, Karen Black\, Geraldine Chaplin\, and Keith Carradine\, who won an Oscar for writing the song “I’m Easy.”\n\nPresented by the Michigan Theater\; the University of Michigan Department of Film\, Television\, and Media\; and the University of Michigan Library.
