DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

DESCRIPTION:Gluklya’s work is a powerful example of socially engaged art at the intersections of gender\, class\, and cultural identity. By focusing on experiences of female textile workers in Kyrgyzstan\, the artist explores the often-overlooked stories of women affected by Soviet and post-Soviet colonialism. \"Threading the Needle: Vestiges of Colonialism and Femininity\" retells their stories using a diverse range of media — film\, sculpture\, watercolors\, and felt tapestries. Unfolding the implications of economic and societal pressures on women\, Gluklya explores issues of poverty\, isolation\, and exploitation among the garment workers.\n   \n   Personal stories are woven into a broader social context — such as the legacy of the \"Likbez\" (liquidation of illiteracy) campaign among women in Central Asia during Soviet rule and entrenched patriarchal traditions\, like \"Ala Kachuu\" (bride-kidnapping). DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andy Ross Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The pieces here are from a large series of works made over the last several years. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. He received a BFA degree from College for Creative Studies\, and an MFA degree from University of Michigan. He has taught photography\, art\, and web design at colleges in California and Michigan. His photographs and collages have been exhibited in schools\, galleries\, and museums across the United States.

DESCRIPTION:Informed by her experience as a refugee\, Phung Huynh’s projects explore the complexities of displacement\, assimilation\, and cultural negotiation among Cambodian and Vietnamese refugees who have resettled in the United States. She creates detailed graphite portraits on pink donut boxes to highlight the stories of Southeast Asians who have survived war trauma and genocide. Huynh’s serigraph prints about Donut Kids foreground intergenerational gaps as well as bridging the refugee parent and American child through the narratives of Cambodian American children who were raised by donut shop owners in California. Huynh’s most recent work of drawings of Cambodian Buddhist statue heads and photographic prints of decapitated statue bodies on fabric addresses the repatriation of looted Cambodian antiquities in the context of challenging the legacy of colonialism\, unethical museum practices\, and the refugee’s desire to return home. DESCRIPTION:This body of work represents a playful exploration of form\, color\, and scale through the lens of cellular shapes. Inspired by the complex patterns of biological life\, the pieces are a celebration of growth\, transformation\, and the joy of experimentation. The use of non-precious materials\, such as wood balls and paint\, allowed for a liberating approach to composition and color\, while the spherical forms and circular panels evoke the look of petri dishes—symbolizing both scientific curiosity and organic development.\nBorn in Detroit\, Elizabeth is a multidisciplinary artist and mother based in the metro Detroit area\, where she works from a studio in her home. With a background in bench jewelry\, her earlier work focused on studio jewelry and was represented by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal.\nElizabeth’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. She holds a BA in Jewelry Design\, with First Class Honours\, from Central Saint Martins in London\, a BFA from the University of Michigan\, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, where she specialized in Metalsmithing and Architecture. Her diverse practice spans jewelry\, sculpture\, and installation\, blending materials and techniques to explore themes of production\, growth\, transformation\, and organic form.

DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

DESCRIPTION:U-M ChE faculty and graduate students are especially encouraged to attend.\n\nA reception with light refreshments will be held in the B32 lobby from 11-11:30 a.m.\n\nSeminar Abstract: \"Sticky liquids make soft solids\"\nThis talk will describe observations of unexpected interactions among fluids of different sorts that can result in new soft solid materials.  It will also describe new measurement methods that enable the study of these phenomena.  The observations include water-in-oil emulsions that remain stable in the absence of any surfactant whatsoever\, phase separation of proteins that result in liquid and gel drops and the observation that biopolymer gel networks in living cells have all the hallmarks of worm-like micelles\, and network structure widely studied in surfactant and diblock copolymers systems.\n\nAbout David Weitz:\nDavid A. Weitz is the Mallinckrodt Professor of Physics and Applied Physics at Harvard University\, where he has established a renowned career in the field of soft condensed matter physics and microfluidics. He earned his Ph.D. in physics at Harvard in 1978 under the mentorship of Prof. M. Tinkham. Before joining Harvard\, Weitz was a professor at the University of Pennsylvania and a physicist at Exxon Research and Engineering Co. His research contributions\, such as developing Diffusing-Wave Spectroscopy and pioneering work in microrheology\, have significantly advanced the understanding of complex fluids and soft materials.\n\nWeitz's lab at Harvard is at the forefront of studying the physics of soft condensed matter\, which includes work on colloidal dispersions\, foams\, and emulsions. The lab is also dedicated to advancing microfluidic techniques for the synthesis of new materials and complex biochemical assays. The team explores the mechanics of biomaterials and cell rheology\, striving to innovate in the fields of encapsulation and fluid dynamics.\n\nWeitz's prolific academic and scientific contributions have been recognized by his election to several prestigious organizations. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering\, as well as a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Chemistry. Additionally\, he is a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the American Physical Society\, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Beyond his research and teaching\, Weitz has served on numerous scientific advisory boards\, including as chair of the Gordon Research Conference Board of Trustees since 2019\, with his tenure extending as chair in 2025. His distinguished career includes numerous awards\, such as the 2024 Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science from The Franklin Institute and recognition as a Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researcher from 2018 to 2023. Weitz has published over 868 papers\, led the founding of more than 20 startups\, and created popular courses at Harvard\, such as \"Science and Cooking\,\" which has attracted more than five million video views.

DESCRIPTION:In this seminar\, Dr. Huff will illustrate the Beyond Professional Identity (BPI) lab's active engineering education research that aims to transform cultures of engineering to be compassionate toward humanity. By establishing theoretical and methodological ways to access psychological phenomena that are often hidden in professional domains\, we can change the ways that engineering faculty\, students\, and professionals inter-personally relate to those within and outside engineering by altering the ways that they intra-personally understand who they are—their identities—in the context of their professions. In this seminar\, Dr. Huff discusses four strands of research that support this career mission: 1) quality in interpretive research\, 2) personal identity in professional settings\, 3) professional shame in engineering\, and 4) academic well-being in engineering faculty. He will demonstrate how activity in these four strands of research coalesce to create a clarified vision of how engineers could emanate and experience care in the context of their professions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Long-run Effects of Transportation Productivity on the US Economy
DESCRIPTION:We quantify the aggregate\, regional and sectoral impacts of transportation productivity growth on the US economy over the period 1947-2017. Using a multi-region\, multi-sector model that explicitly captures produced transportation services as a key input to interregional trade\, we find that the calibrated change in transportation productivity had a sizable impact on aggregate welfare\, magnified by a factor of 2.3 compared to its sectoral share in GDP. The amplification mechanism results from the complementarity between transport services and tradable goods\, interacting with sectoral and spatial linkages. The geographical implications are highly uneven\, with the West and Southwest benefiting the most from market access improvements while the Northeast experiences a decline. Sectoral impacts are largest in transportation-intensive activities like agriculture\, mining and heavy manufacturing. Our results demonstrate the outsized and heterogeneous impact of the transportation sector in shaping US economic activity through specialization and spatial transformation.

Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

Once you've registered\, joining information will be sent to your email. \n\nRegister for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/5y2k8.\n   \n   This talk analyzes the film and philosophy of Matsumoto Toshio\, an avant-garde documentary filmmaker best known for the queer\, kaleidoscopic *Funeral Parade of Roses* (1969) and a series of \"neo-documentary\" films from the early-mid 1960s. Specifically\, it looks at his work through the overarching lens of antifascism. I argue that his writings describe avant-garde documentary as a privileged art form\, uniquely capable of battling against everyday fascist ideology – both fascism in the streets and in our mindset and everyday behavior.\n   \n   Julia Alekseyeva is an assistant professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania and holds a secondary affiliation with cinema and media studies. Her first academic book\, *Antifascism and the Avant-Garde: Radical Documentary in the 1960s* (UC Press\, Feb. 2025)\, builds off of long-standing work analyzing the interaction between radical media and leftist politics\, especially in Japan\, France\, and the Soviet Union. DESCRIPTION:Musicology PhD student Eric Whitmer & Joe Antrim perform on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Prelim Seminar Series - How do functional and life history traits mediate bee-plant interactions and distributions?
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Bees (Hymenoptera : Apoidea : Anthophila) are a speciose and functionally diverse clade of insects\, comprising over 20\,000 described species which act as key pollinators across terrestrial and agricultural ecosystems. However\, despite their ecological and economic importance\, we still lack fundamental understanding of the consequences of bee functional and life history variation for bee ecology\, evolution\, and pollination services. As native pollinator abundance and diversity continue to decline worldwide\, expanding our understanding of how trait variation among bees shapes their geographic distributions and dietary preferences will enhance our ability to predict how global changes may impact this crucial ecosystem service. In this dissertation\, I seek to address these gaps by adopting a macroecological and macroevolutionary approach to bee trait diversity. I will integrate large datasets of traits and phylogenies to identify the environmental factors that govern variation in key functional traits and explore how this variation influences bees' interactions with flowering plants. I will also generate new data on diet preferences for poorly studied tropical bees using novel approaches for honey and pollen metabarcoding and contribute to ongoing efforts in the field to create large\, global datasets of bee traits and bee-plant interactions. Ultimately\, this research will provide new insights into the ecological processes shaping bee diversity and their interactions with flowering plants.

Srikant is a Grainger Distinguished Chair in Engineering\, co-Director of the C3.ai Digital Transformation Institute and a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the\nCoordinated Science Lab at the University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign.  His research interests include applied probability\, machine learning and communication networks. He is the recipient of the 2015 INFOCOM Achievement Award\, the 2019 IEEE Koji Kobayashi Computers and  Communications Award and the 2021 ACM SIGMETRICS Achievement Award. He has also received several Best Paper awards including the 2015 INFOCOM Best Paper Award\,  the 2017 Applied Probability Society Best Publication Award\, and the 2017 WiOpt Best Paper award. He was the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking from 2013-2017 and is currently the Stochastic Models Area Chair for Mathematics of Operations Research.\n\nAbstract:\n\nThe first part of the talk will provide some motivation for the use of central limit theorem to design algorithms for machine learning and graph sampling. Then\, we will provide an introduction to Stein’s method which can be used to upper bound the Wasserstein distance between the distribution of a scaled sum of random variables and a Gaussian distribution. Finally\, we will present some new results on nonasymptotic CLTs for vector-valued martingales and vector-valued functions of Markov chains\, and discuss an application to machine learning. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Commutative Algebra Seminar -- (derived) jets and arcs and an imperfect curve selection lemma
DESCRIPTION:Fix k a field and X an affine k-variety. For each non-negative integer r\, associated to X are r-th jet spaces which parameterize polynomial differential equations of order at most r\,  and their limit J^infty X the arc space of X\, with a natural projection map pi : J^\infty X \to X. A fundamental problem introduced by Nash relates essential valuations to those that appear in the irreducible decomposition of the inverse image under pi of the singular locus of X.  Critical to all known cases of determining when these valuations are the same is the `curve selection' lemma\, which comes down to proving a noetherianity statement of a local ring of the arc space at so called stable points. This is known when k is perfect. Extending techniques of Docampo-de Fernex\, we employ derived techniques to address the case when k is not perfect.  We will review background on jet/arc spaces. This is joint work with R. Docampo\, C. Eric Overton-Walker.

DESCRIPTION:We consider the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity coefficient in two space dimensions. These equations describe the motion of a fluid with variable density and viscosity\, which arises for example when mixing two immiscible fluids with different densities and viscosities. In this talk we prove the propagation of regularity of density patches\, even for largely varying\, discontinuous viscosity coefficients. This talk is based on joint work with Xian Liao.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - Retracing the evolutionary steps towards symbiosis
DESCRIPTION:The biosphere is a network of interacting species that connects organisms across all scales\, from microbes to mammals. Knowledge of the mechanisms underlying these relationships\, and the evolutionary forces that shape them\, is fragmentary. In this lecture\, I will describe how my lab has pioneered the study of rove beetles as a model clade to break open basic problems in organismal interactions and their evolutionary origins. Most of the 66\,000 rove beetle species are free-living predators. Yet\, from this ancestral lifestyle\, hundreds of lineages have transformed into symbiotic organisms specialized for life as imposters within the complex societies of ants. The transition from free-living to symbiotic embodies evolution in the extreme\, with dramatic changes in social behavior and chemical communication that enable rove beetles to assimilate into the social fabric of host colonies. The widespread\, convergent evolution of this form of symbiosis\, combined with the experimental tractability of both free-living and symbiotic rove beetles\, provides a virtuoso system for understanding both how and why new ecological relationships are forged by evolution. I will discuss how my lab’s work is creating an integrated picture of how species recognize and interact with each other\, illuminating the conditions that predispose such interactions to emerge\, and pinpointing forces that shape the evolutionary path towards obligate and highly intimate relationships between species.

DESCRIPTION:This paper studies the effect of aggregate shocks on micro-level outcomes. We develop and estimate a cross-sectional units vector autoregression (csuVAR) that combines aggregate variables with unit-level outcomes\, earnings in our application. The csuVAR also allows us to reconstruct the cross-sectional distribution from the unit-level outcomes. We contrast the csuVAR with a functional VAR model (fVAR) that is designed to directly track the evolution of macroeconomic aggregates and a cross-sectional distribution\, but not individual units. In an empirical application we examine the effect of productivity shocks on the unit-level labor earnings dynamics in Germany\, using a panel data set constructed from the Sample of Integrated Labour Market Biographies (SIAB) published by Institute for Employment Research (IAB) of the German Federal Employment Agency.

DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances.The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.The ERC Workshop uses small-group\, peer-led circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced.Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session.If you have any questions or concerns about taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact Jacqy Hippe\, Program Manager for Graduate Research\, Outreach\, Workshops\, Outreach\, and Evaluation (GROWE) (jhippe@umich.edu)\, or fill out this form. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Public Lecture: Ancestors: Where Do We Come From and Why Do We Care?
DESCRIPTION:Format: Lecture followed by Q&A\n\nAbstract: Everyone comes from somewhere. From the doctor’s office to the passport office\, from whom we’ve descended affects the biological\, legal\, and cultural identities of just about everybody in the world today. How did ancestry come to play such a critical role in defining status? The answers lie\, in part\, in the many kinds of genealogical records created and maintained by religious and political authorities over time\, such as royal chronicles\, family trees\, and certificates of birth\, marriage\, and death. Drawing on insights from history\, anthropology\, and genetics\, this lecture will meditate on the human preoccupation with lineage from ancient times to the DNA tests of today.\n\nBiography: Maya Jasanoff is the Coolidge Professor of History at Harvard University. She is the author of three books—\"Edge of Empire\" (2005)\, \"Liberty’s Exiles\" (2011)\, and \"The Dawn Watch\" (2017)—which have won accolades including the National Book Critics Circle Award\, the Cundill Prize in History\, the George Washington Book Prize\, and the Windham-Campbell Prize for Non-Fiction. Jasanoff is currently completing a broad-ranging history of the human preoccupation with ancestry. She writes widely about history\, literature\, and world affairs for publications including The New Yorker and The New York Times.\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. DESCRIPTION:The Department of Dance at the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre\, and Dance presents *Shadowed Embraces\,* with choreography by Robert Farr-Jones\, Mary Kacsur\, Stella Lansill\, and Najah Tucker.  This concert runs April 17th\, 18th\, & 19th at 7:30 pm. \n\nMary Kacsur’s group work\, *Light Encounters\,* utilizes three symbols–sunrise\, sunset\, and the North Star–to represent new beginnings\, hope\, direction\, and the guidance that we seek in our lives. Dancers Eve Anderson\, Ava Barber\, Alexandra Baron\, Julianne Doner\, Lily Gonzalez\, and Alyssa Hernandez take the audience on a reflective exploration through morning and night. In Kacsur’s solo\, Love\, Mary\, she reflects on significant moments in her life\, exploring themes of resilience\, nostalgia\, and healing. By sharing her personal journey\, she highlights the importance of investing in moments that bring joy and truly matter.\n\nInspired by Jewish traditions\, ancestral memory\, and identity\, Stella Lansill’s *A fire must be tended to* explores trauma\, resilience\, intimacy\, and rebirth through movement\, visual art\, and live music. The connected group and solo piece confront youthful naivety with the ancient hymn hidden within us—burdened by past suffering and inherited trauma but gifted with the wisdom\, strength\, and creativity of those who came before\, whose voices still hum within us. Through cycles of nurturing\, explorations of queer relationships\, and sacred reckoning\, the performers undergo spiritual deaths and renewal\, embracing “darkness” as a radical space for growth and collective healing.\n\n*Consuming\,* choreographed by Najah Tucker\, explores how the weight of one singular want can cause a tidal wave of disaster. The work investigates this impending tidal wave of emotions through an ensemble of dancers. Before\, Tucker’s solo\, reminisces on past experiences that led her to where she is today.\n\nRobert Farr-Jones’s work *i’m not ready // they must be fed* explores transformation\, found family\, and the inevitability of change\, using the natural phenomenon of a whale fall as a guiding image. Through layered fabric veils developed in collaboration with a Design and Production major Ceri Roberts\, this choreography navigates cycles of loss and renewal\, inviting the audience to reflect on the profound transitions that shape our lives. \n\nThis concert is supported in part through the School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, EXCEL Enterprise Fund and the Arts at Michigan Fund.

DESCRIPTION:A legendary band of brothers\nFor over four decades the Wooten Brothers have been recognized as some of the most innovative musicians in existence and are collectively known as one of the most talented and dynamic band of brothers the world has ever known. Since they were young\, the brothers have been a musical tour-de-force redefining the limits of jazz\, funk\, soul\, R&B\, rock\, and bluegrass. \nVictor Wooten\, a five-time Grammy Award-winning artist\, has graced the cover of Bass Player Magazine five times. He is a founding member of the eclectic group Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and is recognized as one of the greatest living bassist today often drawing comparisons to Jaco Pastorius\, and was named one of the “Top ten bassist of all time” by Rolling Stone Magazine.\n\nJoseph Wooten has a dizzying list of talents that is impressive even by the Wooten clan’s standards. Currently the keyboardist for the Steve Miller Band (since 1993)\, he is also a composer\, orchestrator\, motivational speaker\, and has been showcased as an amazing vocalist since he was a child. He has collaborated with the likes of Whitney Houston and Kenny G\, and when not touring with Miller\, leads his own band\, performs with Freedom Sings\, and even helps out his little brother as keyboardist\, vocalist\, and composer for The Victor Wooten Band. \n\nRoy “Futureman” Wooten\, also a five-time Grammy Award winner\, is best known for his masterful drumming and percussion skills and is a founding member of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Roy\, a seasoned drum set player\, is mostly known for his frenzied\, inimitable on-stage performances heightened by his surreal choice of instruments: his trademark inventions “The Drumitar” and “RoyEl” keyboard. He is also a philosopher\, researcher\, filmmaker\, and educator. His impressive solo career and “Black Mozart” projects scan the genres of classical\, jazz\, soul\, gospel\, and spoken word. \n\nRegi Wooten’s signature guitar style of chording\, slapping\, tapping and frenzied strumming has earned him world-wide notoriety and comparisons to Jimi Hendrix\, Frank Zappa and Chuck Berry. In recent years\, Regi has performed with many artists including the legendary Ginger Baker. Regi\, known worldwide as “The Teacher”\, currently teaches music in Nashville\, TN and has taught many notable musicians. He was teaching his little brothers Joseph and Victor when he himself was only 9 years old. \n\nTogether The Wooten Brothers bring an uncanny level of experience\, originality\, and musical expertise to the stage. Their shows will be a high-energy\, super-funky\, artistic blend of styles including original songs and classics. In short: these brothers are the real deal and their shows are not to be missed.
