DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

DESCRIPTION:Gluklya’s work is a powerful example of socially engaged art at the intersections of gender\, class\, and cultural identity. By focusing on experiences of female textile workers in Kyrgyzstan\, the artist explores the often-overlooked stories of women affected by Soviet and post-Soviet colonialism. \"Threading the Needle: Vestiges of Colonialism and Femininity\" retells their stories using a diverse range of media — film\, sculpture\, watercolors\, and felt tapestries. Unfolding the implications of economic and societal pressures on women\, Gluklya explores issues of poverty\, isolation\, and exploitation among the garment workers.\n   \n   Personal stories are woven into a broader social context — such as the legacy of the \"Likbez\" (liquidation of illiteracy) campaign among women in Central Asia during Soviet rule and entrenched patriarchal traditions\, like \"Ala Kachuu\" (bride-kidnapping). This dynamic — where colonization and modernization intertwine the individual lives they touch — raises questions about cultural identity and the ethical borders of decolonized research.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by CREES alumna Dianne Beal (BA REES '79). DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. DESCRIPTION:The pieces here are from a large series of works made over the last several years. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. He received a BFA degree from College for Creative Studies\, and an MFA degree from University of Michigan. He has taught photography\, art\, and web design at colleges in California and Michigan. His photographs and collages have been exhibited in schools\, galleries\, and museums across the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Angkorian Homecoming
DESCRIPTION:Informed by her experience as a refugee\, Phung Huynh’s projects explore the complexities of displacement\, assimilation\, and cultural negotiation among Cambodian and Vietnamese refugees who have resettled in the United States. She creates detailed graphite portraits on pink donut boxes to highlight the stories of Southeast Asians who have survived war trauma and genocide. Huynh’s serigraph prints about Donut Kids foreground intergenerational gaps as well as bridging the refugee parent and American child through the narratives of Cambodian American children who were raised by donut shop owners in California. Huynh’s most recent work of drawings of Cambodian Buddhist statue heads and photographic prints of decapitated statue bodies on fabric addresses the repatriation of looted Cambodian antiquities in the context of challenging the legacy of colonialism\, unethical museum practices\, and the refugee’s desire to return home. DESCRIPTION:This body of work represents a playful exploration of form\, color\, and scale through the lens of cellular shapes. Inspired by the complex patterns of biological life\, the pieces are a celebration of growth\, transformation\, and the joy of experimentation. The use of non-precious materials\, such as wood balls and paint\, allowed for a liberating approach to composition and color\, while the spherical forms and circular panels evoke the look of petri dishes—symbolizing both scientific curiosity and organic development.\nBorn in Detroit\, Elizabeth is a multidisciplinary artist and mother based in the metro Detroit area\, where she works from a studio in her home. With a background in bench jewelry\, her earlier work focused on studio jewelry and was represented by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal.\nElizabeth’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. She holds a BA in Jewelry Design\, with First Class Honours\, from Central Saint Martins in London\, a BFA from the University of Michigan\, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, where she specialized in Metalsmithing and Architecture. Her diverse practice spans jewelry\, sculpture\, and installation\, blending materials and techniques to explore themes of production\, growth\, transformation\, and organic form.

DESCRIPTION:“RAW” is a 2024 printmaking portfolio featuring 25 15”x20” works on paper by a diverse group of primarily student artists\, organized by Professor Endi Poskovic of the Stamps Printmedia program. DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, numerous magnetic van der Waals layered quantum materials have been reported\, including transition-metal halides\, transition-metal chalcogenides\, transition-metal phosphorus chalcogenides\, and metal oxy- and chalco-halides. Unlike 3D counterparts\, layered magnets can be easily and rapidly exfoliated to yield ultra-thin magnets\, providing unique opportunities for both fundamental physics and new technologies. Furthermore\, these materials enable unprecedented experimental access to the ground states\, fundamental excitations\, and magnon dynamics\, as they are highly susceptible to external stimuli. In this talk\, I will present and discuss our recent findings in tuning the magnetic properties of quasi-2D layered van der Waals quantum magnets by intercalation\, photoexcitation\, proton irradiation\, and by the application of pressure. If time permits\, I will briefly discuss our recent efforts in solving the problems related to energy materials by employing magnetometry and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. He received his Ph.D. in Physics in 2008 from Indian Institute of Science\, Bangalore\, working under the supervision of Prof. S V Bhat. His doctoral work focused on the study of nanoscale charge ordered manganites. He then joined the group of Prof. Andre Stesmans at the University of Leuven (Belgium)\, focusing on the carbon nanotubes and graphene nanoribbons. He then secured NRC/NAS postdoc position at Army Research Office\, USA\, working on multiferroic materials.\n\nHe joined Faculty at UTEP in 2016. His primary research focuses on two interconnected research thrusts: (a) investigate the magnetic properties of quasi-2D magnetic properties of quantum materials\, (b) develop and apply operando (electron) spin techniques to solve the problems related to catalysis and energy materials. He received the funding from NSF DMR\, NSF MRI\, NSF CBET\, ACS PRF\, NRC\, and DOE LDRD. Under his mentorship\, his students secured NSF GRFP\, DOE SCGSR\, and Outstanding Dissertation Awards and placed at Stanford\, Caltech\, Rice\, UT Austin\, and LANL for Ph.D. and postdoc positions. He serves in MRS Awards Committee and Kavli Young Scientist Award Committee. He raised more than $6.37 M to initiate\, run\, and establish the research programs in his group at UTEP. He published 85 peer-reviewed articles (total) in the leading international journals. His work has been widely recognized in the community as reflected from more than 3000 citations\, 35 invited talks\, and h-index of 23. As a lead organizer\, he has been organizing MRS Spring Meetings since 2019 on quantum and energy materials.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Quick-Fixing: Near-Rationality in Consumption and Savings Behavior
DESCRIPTION:When optimizing consumption-savings decisions is costly\, people may instead rely on quick-fixes\, simple policy functions that avoid these costs. We introduce a model of quick-fixing. To study it empirically\, we field a novel survey that measures households’ consumption policy functions in response to income shocks. Almost 70% of households follow one of four simple quick-fixes that fully consume or fully save out of small shocks\, but they abruptly adjust their behavior for large shocks. This behavior accounts for almost half of the cross-sectional variance in marginal propensities to consume\, but is poorly predicted by other demographic and economic information. In an incomplete-markets model calibrated to match our evidence\, we find that quick-fixing is near-rational: the average opportunity cost of quick-fixing is only $17 per quarter. Yet\, this small\, empirically realistic deviation from the rational model significantly alters aggregate consumption responses to income shocks of varying sizes.

DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Dr. Smith will argue that starting in the early twentieth century\, the acolytes of a new discipline called nutrition science began to research Chinese bodies and diets in ways that made them appear to be inherently deficient and even pathological. Seeking to explain the unequal power relations that underlay the imperialist world order\, both foreign and some Chinese scientists blamed the Chinese nation’s political weakness and poor health on bad food choices. Although the age of formal empires is past\, the traces of what she calls nutritional imperialism persist.\n   \n   Hilary A. Smith is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Denver. She writes about the history of science and medicine in China. She is the author of *Forgotten Disease: Illnesses Transformed in Chinese Medicine *(Stanford\, 2017) and is currently finishing a book about nutritional imperialism. She has received a Fulbright US Scholar Grant as well as support from the National Endowment of the Humanities\, the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation\, and other awards.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Electrocatalysis for Sustainable Chemical Manufacturing and Defluorination of Forever Chemicals
DESCRIPTION:Electrocatalysis presents a transformative opportunity for producing chemicals and consumer goods sustainably by replacing fossil fuel-based processes with energy-efficient technologies powered by renewable sources. This method also shows significant promise in addressing the global challenge of remediating per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water. Viable electrocatalytic processes must use nonprecious materials\, operate in aqueous environments\, consume minimal energy\, and effectively eliminate harmful chemicals\, necessitating a deep understanding of mechanisms and the strategic design of nanocatalysts with controlled properties.\n\nOur research employs pulsed laser in liquids synthesis to develop nanocatalysts with precise surface chemistries\, facilitating a quantitative understanding of electrocatalytic processes\, especially within the electrode microenvironment. We have demonstrated that laser-made earth-abundant mixed-metal nanocatalysts on high-surface-area carbon supports can selectively electrooxidize toluene to benzyl alcohol with high activity. Additionally\, we achieved complete defluorination of various PFAS in aqueous electrolytes using laser-synthesized bimetallic nanocatalysts.\n\nThe unifying theme of our group is to advance the design and fabrication of nanocatalysts for the electrocatalytic generation of reactive species from water\, aimed at sustainable applications. This work is based on a detailed atomistic understanding of catalyst materials\, electrode microenvironments\, and electrocatalytic mechanisms\, with the ultimate goal of promoting environmentally friendly and scalable solutions for chemical manufacturing and water remediation.

The spectral properties of this model have been extensively studied\, and a spectral threshold has been identified: above this threshold\, the largest eigenvalue contains information about the signal\, while below it\, the eigenvalue is uninformative. DESCRIPTION:Students in the studio of Tiffany Ng perform on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

DESCRIPTION:Today’s world is fast-paced\, with pressures to always be on the go and up-to-date\, which can be exhausting\, overwhelming\, and lead to feeling out of balance with our own mind-body connection. Once we feel off-balance\, it can be hard to find your way back to being in alignment.\n\nThe Psychological Clinic is offering a new 8-week virtual workshop with the goal of helping people re-establish their mind-body connection and learn to manage difficult feelings and situations through the daily cultivation and practice of mindful movement.\n\nThe group will start on on March 11\, 2025 and include psychoeducation\, group discussions\, and experiential exercises.\n\nMultiple strategies will be utilized\, such as mindfulness\, diaphragmatic breathing\, yoga\, and dance movement. Activities will occur during group to help build these skills\, and tasks to practice at home between group sessions will be also provided.\n\nWorkshop Details\n+ Who is this for: Individuals 18+ that would benefit from enhancing mindful movement skills. This includes adults who may already have a mindfulness practice\, and/or those who struggle with anxiety\, depression\, and being grounded in the present moment.\n+ When: 5:30-7 p.m. on Tuesdays\, beginning on March 11.\n+ How long: Each weekly session lasts 90 minutes\, for 8 weeks.\n+ Where: Virtually\, on Zoom.\n+ How to Register: Each participant must complete a 30-minute screening appointment to ensure the group is a good fit for their needs.
