DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:The conference theme\, Being Human in a Digital World\, will highlight the success and challenges of being human in a space with an increasing technology presence. Session topics will explore the intersection of humanity and technology through the lenses of mental health\, accessibility\, artificial intelligence\, inclusive teaching\, and the use of technology to support humans rather than replace them.\n\nThe conference will be held May 5 – 9\, 2025.\n\nDay 1 of the conference\, scheduled for May 5\, will be held in person. \nWe can look forward to coffee and treats beginning at 9 am\, followed by two morning session blocks with a meditation break in between\, a catered box lunch\, and the return of our popular poster/demonstration session from 1:30 – 3 pm. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Redefining the Crown
DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

DESCRIPTION:The William L. Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MCDB Connell Memorial Lecture> Phase separation in cell physiology and disease
DESCRIPTION:Annual lecture funded by an endowment from the family of Priscilla Connell\, a renowned nature photographer.\n\nProf. Dr. Anthony Hyman is Director and Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics. He is a fellow of the Royal Society\, and an international member of the National Academy of Sciences. He was born May 27\, 1962 in Haifa\, Israel and is a citizen of the UK\, Israel and Germany. In 1984\, he received his BSc first class in Zoology from the University College in London\, where he worked as research assistant in 1981. From 1985 to 1987 he wrote his PhD on “The establishment of division axes in early C.elegans embryos” under the supervision of Dr. John White at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology\, MRC in Cambridge\, England. From 1988-1992 he carried out his postdoctoral research in the lab of Prof. Tim Mitchison at UCSF. In 1993\, he became a Group Leader at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg\, before he moved to Dresden in 1999 as one of the founding directors of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG)\, where he remains a Director and Group Leader today. Dr. Hyman has received numerous awards.

DESCRIPTION:Do you get anxious in anticipation of social events or performance situations? Do you find yourself worried about appearing incompetent\, weird\, weak\, unintelligent\, awkward\, or anxious to other people in such situations? Do you ruminate about how you came across even after the event is over? Do you experience heart pounding\, blushing\, shaking\, sweating\, dry throat\, or “blanking out” in these situations? Do you cope by avoiding these situations as much as you can? \n\nIf so\, our Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) group for Social Anxiety may be right for you. Hosted by our Psychological Clinic\, the group is scheduled for 6-7:30 p.m. on Mondays\, beginning April 21\, 2025. The group will run for 8 weekly 90-minute sessions\, plus a booster session one month afterward the group concludes.\n\nClinicians use evidence-based group therapy to help participants learn to identify and shift unhealthy thinking patterns. You will build coping skills and increase confidence in a supportive environment and at your own pace.\n\nDetails\n+ When: 6-7:30 p.m.\, Tuesdays.\n+ Duration: The group will meet for 8 weeks starting on April 21\, with a follow-up booster session one month after the group concludes.\n+ Cost: $45 per meeting session\, without insurance. SUMMARY:Performance:Richard Shindell
DESCRIPTION:“A master builder of songs” –Boston Globe\n\nRichard Shindell lives as both an immigrant and emigrant\, crossing thresholds that inform his illumination of the human experience through narrative song. Shindell has inhabited a Zen Buddhist monastery and busked in the streets of Paris. Originally from New York\, now living in Buenos Aires\, Argentina\, Shindell is a writer whose songs paint pictures\, tell stories\, juxtapose ideas and images\, inhabit characters\, vividly evoking entire worlds along the way and expanding our sense of just what it is a song may be. \n\nMeticulously recorded over three years in New York and Buenos Aires\, his most recent release\, Careless\, offered an ambitious\, luxurious\, full-length statement. Shindell immersed himself in the studio\, allowing the time and latitude to explore\, experiment\, take risks—to play—as each of these eleven songs was given form and substance. While his signature acoustic guitar style is used to good effect\, Careless also found Shindell plugging in more. “The wider sonic and dynamic range of the electric has been a real inspiration. Rejuvenating.”\n\nDuring the pandemic\, Shindell stayed in Argentina\, out on the wide open Pampa\, reading\, writing\, taking walks\, doing a little experimental recording\, and tending the garden. He now returns to the road for a limited number of performances. Innovative\, original and occasionally spiritual\, Shindell’s songs weave tales that interchangeably champion the downtrodden\, exalt the disaffected or wax empathetic to those lost to society’s fringes. From lighthearted ballads and adulterous love songs\, to dirges and diatribes that skillfully skewer politics\, prejudice\, war and religion\, to the comic point-of-view of a cow stuck in a barbed wire fence\, he has a unique ability to morph into the soul of the many and varied personalities he casts as narrators in certain songs—veritable novellas framed in haunting acoustic melodies.
