SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. The rainbow has had many different cultural interpretations over the years\, and most recently has become synonymous with gay pride\, appearing all over each June.\n\nHatcher Gallery Exhibit Room Hours:\nSunday\, 2-8pm\nMonday-Thursday\, 9am-8pm\nFriday\, 9am-4pm\nSaturday\, 11am-5pm

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Redefining the Crown
DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GSIs Critically Engaging with Difference: Noticing Students’ Lived Experiences
DESCRIPTION:Part of CRLT's Equity-focused Teaching @ Michigan Series\n\nTeacher noticing is a framework that describes how teachers attend to instructional moments\, interpret these moments\, and respond to these instructional moments. Teacher noticing is a skill that develops reciprocally with experience and can be useful to notice students’ disciplinary understanding and enacting equity-focused teaching\, primarily through tenets like academic belonging and critical engagement of difference. As GSIs develop their framing\, or their commitments for equity\, these frames can influence how and what GSIs notice in the classroom to counter the culturally dominant frames of higher education (e.g.\, meritocracy\, objectivity\, etc.). Given that GSIs have powerful opportunities to leverage equity\, learning how to reflect upon your noticing can be a useful tool to further develop your commitment and ability to identify areas to enact your equity-focused teaching in the classroom. In this session\, we will focus primarily on how to use the teacher noticing framework to critically engage with difference in your classroom by taking an asset-based approach to noticing students’ understanding and lived experiences.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Long-term Care: What Do Michigan’s Older Adults Need to Know?
DESCRIPTION:A new report from the Michigan Poll on Healthy Aging highlights major gaps in planning and preparedness for long-term care among older Michiganders\, and their peers nationwide.\n\nJoin us for a webinar with the report's authors from the University of Michigan Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation\, who will describe the findings and their implications for older adults\, families\, communities\, policymakers\, and beyond. We'll hear more about older Michiganders' experiences\, knowledge\, and attitudes related to long-term care\, along with how these compare to the nation as a whole.\n\nWe'll also take questions about what we know — and don’t know — about long-term care and older adults. The Michigan Health Endowment Fund will join to reflect on how this new information connects to its efforts to support older adults and their caregivers across the state\, and a representative from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services will discuss forthcoming resources to help families understand the long-term care landscape and access the support they need.\n\nThe Michigan Poll on Healthy Aging\, and its counterpart the National Poll on Healthy Aging\, are based at the U-M Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation and supported by the Michigan Health Endowment Fund and Michigan Medicine.\n\nThis event will be live-captioned.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Bioinformatics Town Hall at THSL
DESCRIPTION:We need your help with an important initiative in the Med School Office of Research and Biomedical Research Core Facilities (BRCF) to better align bioinformatics support with research needs.\n\nSince becoming a recharge facility in 2012\, the BRCF Bioinformatics Core has seen major changes in the bioinformatics landscape. Platforms now offer bundled analysis support\, and researchers use commercial or open-source systems (e.g.\, nf-Core/Seqera\, Epi2Me\, Illumina Partek).\n\nOther informatics cores at U-M have also expanded\, and labs are gaining computational skills. Despite this\, bioinformatics still presents challenges and frustrations for many researchers. Changes at the NIH may also impact the availability of bioinformatics support.\n\nTo address these issues\, we aim to engage the research community and ensure the BRCF Bioinformatics Core meets evolving needs. We are gathering feedback through focus groups\, surveys\, and town halls:\n\nJoin us for coffee\, cookies\, and an open discussion of bioinformatics needs.\n\nNCRC - Monday\, May 12\, 10:00 am - 11:00 am\, Building 10\, Rooms G063/G064\nMed Campus - Thursday\, May 15\, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm\, Taubman Health Sciences Library (THSL)\, Room 6000\n\nRegister today! https://forms.gle/Br2Zex7Uv7zT7UNg6\n\nCan't make the town halls? SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Dear Colleagues: How can we prepare students to work and live across differences? It starts by modeling it.
DESCRIPTION:College campuses\, like our nation\, are experiencing significant challenges when grappling with divisions across social and political lines\, impacting how we engage and often avoid one another. \n\nJoin us for a discussion with Michael S. Roth\, President from Wesleyan University who has engaged head-on\, some of the most contentious issues of our time. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Online Arabic Placement test_May 15\, 2025 (12pm-3pm EST)
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test takes approximately three hours in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed via Zoom and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed online through Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other two portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary. How is the result calculated?Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the LSA Language Requirement.Where can I view my results? Placement results are posted within 7 business days after taking the test. You will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.\nImportant information about the test* Please note that only students who are participating in the Spring/Summer orientations are eligible to take the online placement test. If you are an existing UM student\, please sign up to take the in-person placement test that is taking place in August.* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in\, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* Students who are currently taking an Arabic course will not be allowed to take the placement test. * The test assesses students’ proficiency in Standard Arabic (fuSHa)\, NOT colloquial Arabic.* If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge\, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before\, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM\, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level\, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement.* Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in\, or if they test out of the language requirement. This is extremely important to avoid delays in graduation and complications with placement.* Arabic 101\, 201\, 401\, 501 or 504 are offered ONLY in the Fall semester\, and Arabic 102\, 202\, 402\, 511 are ONLY offered in the Winter semester.* Arabic 103 (the equivalent of Arabic 101 & 102\, combined) AND Arabic 203 (the equivalent of Arabic 201 & 202\, combined) are offered in the Spring-Summer terms.UM’s Arabic curriculum is a dual register curriculum in which students learn to speak and understand the Levantine dialect (the dialect of Jordan\, Syria\, Palestine and Lebanon) in addition to developing the four language skills of formal Arabic (fuSHa). If you have questions regarding the placement test\, please contact the Arabic program director at\, mesarabicprogram@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Planting the SEED: Structuring Equity\, Engagement\, and Discourse
DESCRIPTION:Part of CRLT's Equity-focused Teaching @ Michigan Series\n\nMany GSIs worry about keeping their students engaged with course material. Research in educational engagement theory shows that students are most engaged when they are active participants in their own learning (Kearsley and Shneiderman\, 1998\; Rachmad\, 2022). This workshop explores foundational “rootwork” strategies for designing an interactive and dynamic classroom experience. We’ll discuss practical approaches to syllabus design\, effective use of technology\, and how to incorporate instructor interactions that foster deeper engagement.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:An Evening Dedicated to Dignity and Noble Work
DESCRIPTION:An Evening Dedicated to Dignity and Noble Work\nMay 15\, 2025\n5:00 – 7:00 p.m. ET\nRobertson Auditorium\, Michigan Ross\nFree and open to all\, registration required\n\nJoin the Center for Positive Organizations for a unique evening weaving together academic inquiry\, business leadership\, art\, and changemaking as we focus on asking brave questions about the transformative power of human dignity and purposeful work. As part of the Positive Organizational Scholarship Research Conference\, this special evening session is free to attend and open to all.\n\nResearchers Reut Livne-Tarandach and Hooria Jazieri will set the stage by sharing insights from their research exploring how organizations build social architectures that enable or constrain the recognition of inherent human worth. Building on this view of dignity\, we welcome Peter Quigley\, President and CEO of Kelly\, who will share his personal story and how it has shaped his passion for work that imbues people with dignity and worth. Under his leadership\, Kelly pursues the purpose of connecting people with work that enriches their lives\, especially through initiatives they refer to as Noble Work. Illuminating the idea of human dignity and noble work from a different perspective and organizational lens\, we welcome Vince Womack\, artist\, director\, and conductor at the James A. Foshey Learning Center\, a K-12 public school in South Los Angeles. In an onstage conversation\, Vince will share the passion that led him to the work he does with young people\, how he builds community that inspires purpose for his students\, and his motivation to create a film that tells the story of dignified work. Watching 'The Last Repair Shop' together with Vince\, we will see dignity and noble work come alive through the eyes of people who maintain the musical instruments for the students. All together\, this evening of scholarship\, leadership\, and artistry will unlock our hearts\, minds\, and imaginations\, inviting us all to elevate our contributions to creating a world of dignity and purpose.\n\nOur Speakers:\n- Peter Quigley\, President and CEO\, Kelly\n- Vincent Womack\, Music Director\, Educator\, and Conductor

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Mind Matters: Stuttering Fact vs. Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Stuttering is a speech condition that interrupts the normal flow of speaking. Someone who stutters knows exactly what they want to say\, but they have a hard time getting the words to come out the way they want them to. They may experience blocks (where a sound doesn’t come out)\, repetitions (where they repeat a sound)\, or prolongations (where they hold a sound for a long time). The cause is unknown. Because of this\, many myths abound about stuttering\, like that someone is just being shy or nervous\, but the reality is that stuttering is not something a person can control. \n\nJoin us as experts from the U-M Speech Neurophysiology Lab dispel these common stuttering myths and share what they have learned through over a decade of neuroscience-based stuttering research. They will offer insights into what we know—and don't know yet—about stuttering\, as well as practical tips to help all of us be better listeners to those in our lives who stutter. They will be joined by Anthony Sun\, Co-President of the Ann Arbor Stuttering Awareness and Research Club (A2STAR). He will share his perspectives as a person who stutters and as the leader of a local stuttering support group.
