SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:Carlo Vitale is a distinguished Michigan-based artist whose vibrant contributions to the Detroit art scene have flourished since the 1970s. A native of Detroit\, Vitale's work is celebrated as part of the second generation of the Cass Corridor Art Movement\, Detroit’s first avante garde. His art draws inspiration from the sweeping vistas of farmland seen from above\, the intricate patterns of quilt-making\, the dynamic energy of cityscapes\, and the rich tapestry of daily life. Vitale eloquently characterizes his mesmerizing oil paintings and prints as “kinetic\, metaphysical abstractions\,” inviting viewers to engage with the depth and vitality of his creative vision.\n\nVitale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit.  His work can be found in many collections including The Whitney Museum of Fine Art in New York\, The Detroit Institute of Art\, Cranbrook Art Museum\, Wayne State University Collection\, University of Michigan Museum of Art and corporate\, hospital\, and private collections throughout the country.

DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Double Ramification Cycle and Admissible Cover Cycles
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nWe derive an explicit combinatorial formula for the double ramification cycle of type (1\,-1) on the moduli space of stable genus g curves with two marked points. The formula is given as a sum over certain strata on the moduli space of curves\, indexed by so-called extremal trees. We present two different proofs of the formula: one using a local equivariant method and the other using blow up and piecewise polynomial techniques. From this main result we obtain similarly-formatted variant formulas\, as well as tautological relations in higher codimension. We also study the compact type double ramification cycle of type (2\,-2)\, establish its connection with hyperelliptic admissible cover loci\, and give some examples. These works link Gromov-Witten type cycles with admissible cover cycles on the moduli space of curves.

DESCRIPTION:The William L. Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Do you get anxious in anticipation of social events or performance situations? Do you find yourself worried about appearing incompetent\, weird\, weak\, unintelligent\, awkward\, or anxious to other people in such situations? Do you ruminate about how you came across even after the event is over? Do you experience heart pounding\, blushing\, shaking\, sweating\, dry throat\, or “blanking out” in these situations? Do you cope by avoiding these situations as much as you can? \n\nIf so\, our Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) group for Social Anxiety may be right for you. Hosted by our Psychological Clinic\, the group is scheduled for 6-7:30 p.m. on Mondays\, beginning April 21\, 2025. The group will run for 8 weekly 90-minute sessions\, plus a booster session one month afterward the group concludes.\n\nClinicians use evidence-based group therapy to help participants learn to identify and shift unhealthy thinking patterns. DESCRIPTION:“That a few guys from Glasgow could conspire to create such an immense sound between them is not unprecedented\, but to achieve this with such lyrical and instrumental flair is a rare\, rare thing” –Folk Radio UK\n\nFor over 15 years now\, the three members of The Langan Band have been carving out their own lawlessly virtuosic path of sound\; rampaging through the boundaries of conventional genre and cavorting into the territories of wild abandon\, purest intimacy\, and unconditional musical elation.\n\nThe trio were initially brought together by a deep respect of traditional song and music\, yet they discovered a mutual love of the evisceration and regeneration of these pieces into provocative and fascinating new compositions\, as was recognised by the band winning the prestigious Danny Kyle Award at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections Festival at the start of their journey together. This sound and process went on to inform the band’s now mostly original repertoire\, and has resulted in a musical experience quite unlike any other.\n\nAyrshire-born John Langan is found centre-stage\, seated on an explosive foot percussion rig of his own devising and fronting the trio with intricate fiery guitar rhythms and witheringly sweet and scathing vocals. To his right stands Alastair Caplin\, a classically trained violinist equally discerning in both the London Prog-Folk/Jazz scenes he occupied for years and also the blistering traditional reels and jigs of his native Outer Hebrides. Stage left is the domain of Angus-born Dave Tunstall and his double bass\; from here emanates a seductive concoction of eerily-bowed soundscapes\, heart-stopping bass lines\, and in conjunction with Caplin’s blurred bowing a truly monumental wall of orchestral noise. The sound of the group reaches its zenith when all of these instruments are joined by the three voices singing together in razor-tight harmony to create an absolute cacophony of joy.\n\nWhilst it is possible to see the evidence of influences the band have drawn on and enjoyed (Trad. Scots music\, Eastern European Gypsy\, Bluegrass and American Old-Time to name a few)\, the true nature of the sound from The Langan Band is best described as un-pigeon-holeable\, yet utterly irresistible.\n\nIn 2024 the band broke onto the North American market with 5 tours of USA & Canada. Through huge mainstage performances at festivals such as Telluride Bluegrass and radio play such as the prestigious Mountain Stage Radio\, they are building a loyal and wild new fanbase across the Atlantic.

DESCRIPTION:New music!\n\nRon Sexsmith is a three time Juno award winning songwriter from Ontario\, Canada. He has written and recorded an extensive and acclaimed catalog of studio albums and original songs\, beginning with his self titled debut in 1995. Ron is set to release his eighteenth studio album\, Hangover Terrace\, this August. \n\nIn the past few decades as a headlining artist\, Ron has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world\, such as Massey Hall\, Carnegie Hall\, London’s Royal Albert Hall\, as well as The London Palladium. \n\nA child of melody\, his music has been described as a hybrid of Canadian folk heroes such as Gordon Lightfoot and Leonard Cohen mingled with that of The Kinks\, Beatles and other British invasion acts of his formative years. \nHis songs have been covered by many revered artists such as Rod Stewart\, kd Lang\, Emmylou Harris\, Michael Buble\, Feist\, Elvis Costello\, and Stevie Nicks to name only a few. \n\nIn 2017\, Ron penned his first novel ‘Deer Life\, A Fairy Tale’ published worldwide by Dundurn Press Limited. He has written a ‘yet to be released’ complete musical score to accompany the tale\, for his vision to bring the story to the stage as musical theatre or to adapt to film. Though rooted in the language of an earlier age\, their songs transcend nostalgia with wit and a flair for the theatrical. On their third album West of Broadway\, vocalist Rachael Price (also of Lake Street Dive) and guitarist/singer/songwriter Vilray evolve their music’s previous dreaminess to achieve a refreshing angularity built on left-of-center instrumentation (e.g.\, vibraphone and alto saxophone coasting above the moody strains of baritone sax and trombone). Produced by Dan Knobler (Allison Russell\, Bahamas)\, West of Broadway unfolds in a series of sharply drawn vignettes inspired by a recent fascination with classic musicals—bringing their luminous vocals to offbeat tales of love and heartache along city streets.\n\nRecorded at the legendary Sear Sound in Manhattan\, West of Broadway took shape with the help of renowned musicians like saxophonist Steve Wilson (a former member of Chick Corea’s Origin sextet) and drummer John Riley (Miles Davis\, Dizzy Gillespie). Over the course of 10 lush and effervescent tracks\, the album delivers standouts like “Love Comes Around” (a joyously romantic piece that set the direction for the LP’s West Coast jazz-inspired aesthetic)\, “My Key to Gramercy Park” (a fantastically salty number narrated by a well-to-do character who lives in lonely suspicion of all those who covet their key to the notoriously exclusive private park)\, and “Off Broadway” (on which golden-voiced comedian Stephen Colbert joins in for what the duo dubs an “oddly grumpy anti-Broadway screed”).
