The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture, signifying beauty, strength, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman, Tanisha Kennedy, Felecia McDaniel, Shantell Elaine McCoy, Tamara Lynn Myles, and Veleria Banks.\r\n\r\nThrough their narratives and portraits, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\r\n\r\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21, 2025 to August 8, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies, and Michigan Medicine. \r\n\r\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. It\u2019s a sound that has earned its creator more than a half-dozen Juno nominations, as well as Top 40 success on both sides of the Canadian\/American border. Now in her third decade as an artist, Kathleen Edwards has done more than carry the torch of songwriting heroes like Tom Petty, Neil Young, and Lucinda Williams \u2014 she\u2019s opened the door for others, too, inspiring a new generation of artists who, like her, blur the boundaries between genre and generation. \r\n\r\nA native of Ottawa, Ontario, Edwards was still in her early 20s when she released the critically-acclaimed Failer. The album\u2019s warm, woozy sound \u2014 crystallized on radio hits like \u201cSix O\u2019Clock News\u201d \u2014 quickly turned her into one of the era\u2019s alt-country heroes. From the very start, though, Edwards\u2019 music seemed to exist somewhere out of time, resisting categorization even as Failer received a Juno nomination for \u201cRoots & Traditional Album of the Year.\u201d \r\n\r\n\u201cNo one knew what to call my type of music back then,\u201d she says of those early years. \u201cThe Americana genre didn\u2019t exist yet, so they couldn\u2019t categorize me. I just made the kind of music I wanted to make.\u201d \r\n\r\nEdwards continued blazing her own trail with follow-up albums like Back to Me and Asking for Flowers. By the time Voyageur arrived in 2012, Americana very much did exist as a genre, and Edwards found herself riding a newfound commercial peak. The album reached Number 2 on the Canadian Albums Chart and Number 3 on Billboard\u2019s Folk Albums chart. Even so, a busy decade on the road had left her exhausted. After touring in support of Voyageur\u2019s release, Edwards left the music business altogether and moved to suburban Ontario, where she opened a coffee shop called \u2014 defiantly \u2014 \u201cQuitters.\u201d \r\n\r\nWhen a phone call arrived from Maren Morris, who was looking for songwriting partners for a new project, Edwards jumped at the chance to collaborate. The two musicians co-wrote \u201cGood Woman,\u201d which appeared on Morris\u2019 Grammy-nominated album Girl in 2019. Back home in Canada, Edwards continued to write new material, eventually partnering with producer Ian Fitchuk for the album Total Freedom. Released in 2020, the album expanded her sound and her audience; Total Freedom didn\u2019t just mark her return to the music industry. It was a rebirth, too.\r\n\r\nWhat\u2019s next? New music, of course. She and Grammy-winner Jim Scott co-produced and released an album called Covers, which pays homage to some of her songwriting heroes - Tom Petty, REM, John Prine, Bruce Springsteen, et al. Edwards remains a fan of \u201cripping guitar riffs and good songs,\u201d and she\u2019s combining both into a follow-up album co-produced by Grammy-winners Jason Isbell and Gena Johnson that will showcase her legacy as well as her evolution. \r\n\r\nShe maintains a presence on the road, too, playing her own gigs one minute and sharing shows with her heroes \u2014 including Willie Nelson, John Fogerty, and Bob Dylan \u2014 the next.\r\n\r\n\u201cThe amount of things I\u2019ve gone through might make someone else quit\u2026but quitting doesn\u2019t quite do it for me,\u201d she says. \u201cI can\u2019t help but want to write great songs, connect with people, and see what\u2019s ahead.
