SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:Carlo Vitale is a distinguished Michigan-based artist whose vibrant contributions to the Detroit art scene have flourished since the 1970s. A native of Detroit\, Vitale's work is celebrated as part of the second generation of the Cass Corridor Art Movement\, Detroit’s first avante garde. His art draws inspiration from the sweeping vistas of farmland seen from above\, the intricate patterns of quilt-making\, the dynamic energy of cityscapes\, and the rich tapestry of daily life. Vitale eloquently characterizes his mesmerizing oil paintings and prints as “kinetic\, metaphysical abstractions\,” inviting viewers to engage with the depth and vitality of his creative vision.\n\nVitale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit.  His work can be found in many collections including The Whitney Museum of Fine Art in New York\, The Detroit Institute of Art\, Cranbrook Art Museum\, Wayne State University Collection\, University of Michigan Museum of Art and corporate\, hospital\, and private collections throughout the country.

DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... DESCRIPTION:The William L. Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Prelim Seminar Series - Microbial legacies: effects on community structure\, function\, and response dynamics
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nLinking community structure to ecological function is a primary goal of community ecology. In microbial ecology\, advances in sequencing technology have allowed widespread profiling of community structure\, and putative functions. However\, whether such descriptive characterization has improved our ability to predict and model microbial response dynamics remains unclear. Structure-function relationships are particularly convoluted in microbial systems due to high levels of genetic diversity\, metabolic plasticity\, context dependency\, and widespread functional redundancy. To this end\, a wide body of research has shown that past events or historical community states can affect contemporary communities. However\, the ways in which legacy effects influence microbial diversity patterns and response dynamics\, particularly in the face of anthropogenic disturbance regimes\, remains poorly understood. Using both an observational and experimental approach\, my research aims to identify the signatures of legacy effects on microbial trait distributions\, and assess whether these effects constrain or augment community response trajectories. Focusing on both soil and freshwater ecosystems\, my research will investigate legacy effects from agricultural management practices and lake eutrophication\, two major drivers of global change. Additionally\, I will explore whether trait distributions and response patterns observed in the laboratory scale up to reflect those observed in a natural ecosystem\, affected by these stressors. Broadly\, my research will contribute to the overall understanding of the factors driving variation in microbial community structure\, and the role of past environmental states or selection regimes play in community functional stability.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Robust Methods for Causal Inference and Policy Learning with Applications to Mobile Health
DESCRIPTION:This dissertation comprises three essays that develop robust methods for causal effect estimation and policy learning\, especially in the context of micro-randomized trials (MRTs)—a longitudinal experimental design used in mobile health (mHealth).\n\nThe first essay develops methods for integrating data across multiple MRTs for the purpose of causal effect estimation. Compared to a single-study analysis\, the methods produce increased statistical efficiency by borrowing information across related studies. Methodologically\, we relate the studies by assuming that certain conditional causal effects are equal across studies\; then we estimate these effects and appropriately average them to target prespecified marginal estimands. \n\nWhereas the first essay develops methods for integrating data across MRTs that have already been implemented\, the second essay introduces the robust mixed-effects (RoME) algorithm for optimizing treatment policies during an MRT. RoME is a contextual bandit algorithm that makes use of mixed-effects modeling\, network cohesion penalties\, doubly robust estimators\, and double/debiased machine learning (DML) to address the specific challenges of mHealth: treatment effect heterogeneity\, cluster structure\, nonstationarity\, and nonlinear relationships. We establish a high-probability regret bound that depends solely on the dimension of the differential-reward model\, enabling strong regret bounds even when the baseline reward is highly complex.\n\nThe third essay steps back from the MRT setting and develops Bayesian Randomization Inference (BRI): a general framework for Bayesian estimation of treatment effects based principally on the physical act of randomization. BRI involves fixing the observed potential outcomes\, positing a probabilistic model for the causal effects\, and forming a likelihood based on the randomization distribution of a statistic. In many cases\, BRI does not require specification of marginal outcome distributions\, resulting in weaker assumptions compared to Bayesian superpopulation-based methods. We prove several theoretical properties for BRI\, including a Bernstein–von Mises theorem and large-sample properties of posterior expectations.

DESCRIPTION:“Walker's sweet tenor carries an edge of pain\, as well as affection for blue notes.” - NPR Music\n\nAmong the most prolific artists on the Americana scene today\, Seth Walker is a multi-dimensional talent who combines a gift for melody and lyric alongside a rich\, Gospel-drenched\, Southern-inflected voice with a true blue knack for getting around on the guitar. With his 12th studio album Why The Worry\, Walker further builds upon this reputation. \n\nSet straight by the title’s mantra\, Why The Worry finds the veteran singer-songwriter letting go of the worry about perception\, the worry of over-preparation\, and the worry that seeps in constantly from the news and noise of everyday life. Taking a page from Willie Nelson\, Walker embraced the country music legend's sage wisdom\, “I’ve never seen worry accomplish anything\, so I decided not to do it.” Indeed\, the album was just about finished when Hurricane Helene hit Walker where he lives in the mountains around Asheville\, and as a result\, the record almost didn’t see light.  As catastrophe took shape\, the album’s importance wavered in his mind until the central theme came back into view. The worry wouldn’t undo any damage\, and there was still service in song. \n\nGrowing up on a commune in rural North Carolina\, the son of classically trained musicians\, Walker played cello long before discovering the guitar in his 20s. When his introduction to the blues came via his Uncle Landon Walker\, who was both a musician and disc jockey\, his fate was forever sealed. Instantaneously\, Seth was looking to artists like T-Bone Walker\, Snooks Eaglin\, and B.B. King as a wellspring of endless inspiration. The rest is history. He's released twelve albums\, broken into the Top 20 of the Americana Radio Charts\, reached No. 2 on the Billboard Blues Album Chart and received praise from NPR\, American Songwriter\, No Depression and Relix\, among others. \n\nAlongside his extensive songwriting and recording pursuits\, Walker is consistently touring and performing at venues and festivals around the world. Along with headline shows\, he's been invited to open for The Mavericks\, Marc Broussard\, The Wood Brothers\, Raul Malo\, Paul Thorn and Ruthie Foster\, among others. \n\nPrior to relocating to Asheville in 2020\, Walker did stints residing in Austin\, New Orleans and Nashville. He’s used those experiences wisely\, soaking up the sounds and absorbing the musical lineage of these varied places. With a bluesman’s respect for roots and tradition\, coupled with an appreciation for—and successful melding of—contemporary songwriting\, Walker sublimely incorporates a range of styles with warmth and grace. Perhaps Country Standard Time said it best: “If you subscribe to the Big Tent theory of Americana\, then Seth Walker—with his blend of blues\, gospel\, pop\, R&B\, rock\, and a dash country—just might be your poster boy.”

DESCRIPTION:“Two singer-songwriters sit on the edge of a cliff…”\n\nWith these words\, we are drawn into the world of Both Sides Now - a theatrical concert that explores the music and lives of long-time friends and one-time lovers\, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. Created by\, and starring Robbie Schaefer and Danielle Wertz\, the cabaret-style performance traverses decades alongside songs such as A Case of You\, Hallelujah\, Big Yellow Taxi\, Suzanne\, and many more. Both Sides Now is at once a piece of the 60’s and 70’s\, and of right now -- offering us a story about the messiness of being human\, of lives persistently lived at the edge of growth\, and of finding the courage to turn toward one another\, again and again.\n\nRobbie Schaefer:\nRobbie is a rabbi\, singer-songwriter and theatre/film artist. The guitarist and songwriter for the indie folk band Eddie From Ohio has several solo releases as well\, including the 2023 single Under the Sun.\n\nHe is currently at work on a new musical\, The Blue Poppy\, an Irish-Jewish ghost story written in collaboration with Scottish playwright Grace Barnes\, and Songs From The Wilderness\, a new album of Jewish musical midrash (interpretation)\, due for release in early 2026. \n\nDanielle Wertz:\nDanielle is a storyteller\, collaborator\, jazz musician\, composer and arranger. After being named a 2015 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition semi-finalist\, Danielle independently released her debut album\, Intertwined\, which ranked #4 on Capital Bop's list of \"Best DC Jazz Albums of 2017.\" That same year she placed 2nd in the Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition and 3rd in the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Vocal Competition.\n\nIn 2023 Danielle released her sophomore album\, Other Side. With this project she made a quantum leap as a composer and conceptualist. The album pairs her original compositions with carefully crafted arrangements of standards from the Great American Songbook. Jazziz called the album “expressive and polished” and Jazz Weekly noticed a “Joni Mitchell’d tenderness to her material.”

And they make you feel like you’re part of it too.” — No Depression\n\nSam Grisman is a bass player\, music appreciator\, and bandleader who grew up in Mill Valley\, California in a home where some of the great acoustic music of our time was being recorded on a regular basis. His father\, legendary mandolinist\, composer\, and producer\, David Grisman\, was constantly having friends come over to his home studio for recording sessions and rehearsals. These friends\, such as Doc Watson\, Jerry Garcia\, John Hartford\, Mike Seeger\, and Tony Rice all left an impression on the younger Grisman and inspired him to pursue a life making music with his many talented friends.\n\nSam Grisman Project was created to shed light on the music that Sam grew up around\, and highlight that music’s influence on the members of the collective and in the greater music community. The friends who make up Sam Grisman Project are a rotating cadre of acousticians who are some of the brightest individual voices on their respective instruments. Members of this rotating cast of instrumental wizards include guitarists Max Flansburg\, Logan Ledger\, Sam Leslie\, Henry Moser\, Jesse Harper\, and Jefferson Hamer\, mandolinists Dominick Leslie\, Joe K. Walsh\, Matt Flinner\, and Jesse Appelman\, clawhammer banjo maestro Victor Furtado\, fiddlers John Mailander\, Alex Hargreaves\, Nate Leath\, Shad Cobb\, and Phoebe Hunt\, cellist Nat Smith\, and Todd Livingston on the Dobro.\n\nSam Grisman Project is committed to putting their love\, gratitude\, and individuality into the music that they share on stage each night\, and to participating in the community effort of preserving\, expanding\, and appreciating great American acoustic music.
