SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:Carlo Vitale is a distinguished Michigan-based artist whose vibrant contributions to the Detroit art scene have flourished since the 1970s. A native of Detroit\, Vitale's work is celebrated as part of the second generation of the Cass Corridor Art Movement\, Detroit’s first avante garde. His art draws inspiration from the sweeping vistas of farmland seen from above\, the intricate patterns of quilt-making\, the dynamic energy of cityscapes\, and the rich tapestry of daily life. Vitale eloquently characterizes his mesmerizing oil paintings and prints as “kinetic\, metaphysical abstractions\,” inviting viewers to engage with the depth and vitality of his creative vision.\n\nVitale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit.  His work can be found in many collections including The Whitney Museum of Fine Art in New York\, The Detroit Institute of Art\, Cranbrook Art Museum\, Wayne State University Collection\, University of Michigan Museum of Art and corporate\, hospital\, and private collections throughout the country.

DESCRIPTION:The William L. Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Intermediate Questionnaire Design\nJuly 21-24\, 2025\n12:00pm-4:00pm EDT\nLive Online via Zoom\n\nParticipants should have prior knowledge of questionnaire design before attending.\n\nThis course is designed to follow on from Introduction to Questionnaire Design or Designing and Writing Questions for Surveys: Guidelines and Recommendations. Now instead of looking at question comprehension from a cognitive side\, the linguistic side will be explored including online tools. Factual questions will be revisited but with the goal of exploring different types of respondent memory problems. Solutions include basic aids to improve memory and alternative methods: decomposition\, calendars\, event history calendars\, internet enabled devices\, wearables\, apps and sensors\, and additional tasks on mobile phones. Also covered are the effects of telescoping and quasi-facts. Subjective questions will be revisited to understand attitude consistency and inconsistency and to cover the popular topic of satisfaction and other customer experience metrics. Alternatives methods to attitude measurement will also be covered: factorial surveys and multi-item scales. The course concludes with multi-cultural issues raised by Rincón and a mini appendix on ways to translate survey questions and evaluate the translation. The course will be interactive with the goal of making it as close to in-person training as possible. There also will be workshops throughout. Pamela is happy to chat with participants about their own questionnaires.\n\nPamela Campanelli is a survey methods specialist\, chartered statistician\, fellow of the academy of social sciences and an international trainer\, researcher and consultant who runs her own business (http://www.thesurveycoach.com/). Her background is in social statistics\, survey methodology\, and psychology with a special interest in the study of survey error and data quality focusing on questionnaire design\, question testing strategies\, interviewing techniques\, sampling and weighting\, survey analysis\, and mixed-mode designs. In addition to providing consultancy\, conducting research\, writing papers\, reviewing for journals\, advising committees\, Dr. Campanelli’s focuses on providing training courses. She is committed to high quality learning. DESCRIPTION:Seismic hazards present significant risks to urban areas\, especially those built on soft sediments that amplify ground motion. Accurate assessment and mitigation of these risks require dense\, high-resolution imaging and continuous monitoring of the shallow subsurface. However\, conventional seismic networks are often limited in urban settings due to high costs\, sparse coverage\, and logistical constraints. These limitations hinder our ability to characterize site effects\, monitor subsurface changes\, and develop effective mitigation strategies. Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) has emerged as a transformative solution\, repurposing existing fiber-optic telecom cables into dense arrays of seismic sensors. DAS enables scalable\, cost-effective\, and non-invasive seismic data acquisition with meter-scale spatial resolution\, making it well-suited for dense urban environments. Despite its potential\, DAS presents distinct challenges for urban seismic applications. Because telecom cables are not designed with geophysical monitoring in mind\, researchers often lack detailed information about the fiber layout\, coupling conditions\, and burial depth. These unknowns can degrade data quality and introduce uncertainty in the spatial accuracy of seismic measurements. Additionally\, DAS generally exhibits lower signal-to-noise ratios compared to traditional geophones\, particularly in noisy urban settings. Another fundamental limitation is DAS’s directional sensitivity: DAS measures axial strain along fiber\, making it less responsive to seismic waves arriving at angles not aligned with the fiber\, which can result in incomplete wavefield capture. This thesis addresses these challenges through three targeted investigations aimed at enhancing the utility of DAS for urban seismic imaging and monitoring. These investigations bridge the gap between theoretical DAS capabilities and practical urban applications\, offering a framework for using telecom fiber networks as long-term\, distributed seismic observatories in cities.\n\nIn Chapter 2\, we investigate the shallow shear-wave velocity (Vs) structure of Granada\, Spain\, a region of moderate seismicity but high hazard due to shallow soft sediments amplifying ground motion. Using a two-day DAS deployment (August 26-27\, 2020) along a telecom fiber with complex geometry\, we address challenges such as urban noise and limited recording duration. An ad-hoc processing scheme incorporating frequency-wavenumber filtering enhances virtual shot gathers and multi-mode dispersion images from ambient seismic noise interferometry. We are able to employ this dataset to generate several Vs profiles for different sections of the cable. The resulting Vs profiles show a shallow low-velocity layer (150-300 m/s) corresponding to alluvial deposits\, transitioning to weathered metamorphic bedrock (>800 m/s) at depth. These profiles align with local geological conditions\, demonstrating DAS’s capability for soil characterization and seismic microzonation in urban areas.\n\nIn Chapter 3\, we examine the near-surface Vs structure in the hill zone of Mexico City through a joint inversion of Rayleigh and Love wave dispersion curves extracted from DAS ambient noise data. We first perform angular response analysis to identify channel pairs with optimal sensitivity to both Rayleigh and Love waves. We then extract phase and group velocity dispersion curves using DAS recorded ambient seismic noise\, and jointly invert them using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo framework to constrain Vs structure to 300 m depth. Notably\, the joint inversion approach enhances the resolution of subsurface interfaces around 25-m depth\, which are poorly resolved in inversions using Rayleigh or Love waves only. Rayleigh and Love wave dispersion data contribute complementary sensitivity to the model: Love waves constrain the shallow structure (0-100 m)\, while Rayleigh waves provide information on deeper layers (up to ∼300 m). This combined sensitivity results in a more robust and stable velocity model. Our results demonstrate the potential of DAS-enabled joint inversion in capturing fine-scale subsurface structure\, particularly in complex urban environments with challenging wavefield conditions.

DESCRIPTION:Trevor Workman was appointed Carillonneur by Bournville Village Trust in 1965. Now in his 60th year as Carillonneur\, Trevor continues to give twice weekly recitals on Bournville Carillon throughout the year. He has completed extensive recital tours of Europe and the United States and regularly plays in the Netherlands\, Belgium\, and France.\n\nIn 2018\, Trevor was recognised by the late Queen - HM Queen Elizabeth II when he received the British Empire Medal in the Birthday Honours list for “Services to the British Carillon Society and to the Community of Bournville.”\n\nIn 2019\, Trevor was honoured and privileged to be invited to be a member of the jury for the ‘International Queen Fabiola Carillon Competition’ in Mechelen\, Belgium. He is currently serving a second term in office as President of the Carillon Society of Britain and Ireland (CSBI) and is active in promoting the carillon and the carillon art in England.\n\nSummer carillon concerts are free and open to all\, including to families and their pets. The music happens rain or shine. Please note that concerts are scheduled on both Central and North Campus\, so plan your commute accordingly. When you arrive\, take a program from the stand near the tower and have a seat outdoors wherever you like\, or bring your own lawn chair or blanket (even your own picnic!). Concert staff wearing nametags will be available to answer questions or direct you to accessible restrooms and other facilities.
