SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. The rainbow has had many different cultural interpretations over the years\, and most recently has become synonymous with gay pride\, appearing all over each June.\n\nHatcher Gallery Exhibit Room Hours:\nSunday\, 2-8pm\nMonday-Thursday\, 9am-8pm\nFriday\, 9am-4pm\nSaturday\, 11am-5pm

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Theoretical Advances in Reinforcement Learning: Online Average-Reward and Offline Constrained Settings
DESCRIPTION:This dissertation presents theoretical advancements in reinforcement learning (RL)\, focusing on two key settings: online RL under the infinite-horizon average-reward criterion and offline constrained RL under partial data coverage.\nThe first part addresses the online setting\, where the objective is to optimize long-run average rewards through interaction with the environment. A family of value-iteration-based algorithms is proposed by approximating the average-reward objective using a carefully tuned discounted surrogate. This part resolves an open problem by establishing a computationally efficient algorithm for linear Markov decision processes under a weak structural assumption. The proposed algorithm employs span-constrained value clipping and a decoupled planning strategy that mitigates statistical inefficiencies arising from the complexity of the function class.\nThe second part is motivated by safety-critical applications and studies the offline setting\, where the agent must learn a policy from a fixed dataset without further interaction. Primal-dual algorithms are developed for both linear MDPs and general function-approximation regimes\, based on the linear programming formulation of RL. These methods are oracle-efficient and provably sample-efficient under partial data coverage. Moreover\, they extend to the constrained RL setting\, where the policy must satisfy additional safety constraints defined by auxiliary reward signals and threshold levels.\nTogether\, the contributions of this dissertation advance the theoretical foundations of reinforcement learning in settings that prioritize safety and long-term performance.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Simulating Quantum Chemical Dynamics in Condensed Phases: Methodological Developments and Applications
DESCRIPTION:Quantum effects play a critical role in many problems of chemical dynamics in condensed phases. In this presentation\, I will introduce recent progress from our group on the development and application of the hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) method\, a non-perturbative framework for accurately capturing the influence of environmental degrees of freedom on quantum systems. I will first highlight recent algorithmic advances that extend the method’s applicability to more complex systems. These include efficient treatments of the exponential decomposition of bath correlation functions for general spectral densities and low-temperature conditions\, as well as the integration of tensor network techniques to enable HEOM propagation involving thousands of effective modes. Several applications of the HEOM method will then be presented\, including charge transport and separation dynamics in organic semiconductors\; quantum coherence in excitation energy transfer in photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes and related ultrafast spectroscopic phenomena\; and the dynamics of systems under strong light-matter interactions.

SUMMARY:Performance:Lori McKenna
DESCRIPTION:“One of Music City’s most in-demand songwriters” –Paste\n\nFrom her home base in Boston\, Lori McKenna has carved out an enviable niche for herself as one of Nashville's most in-demand songwriters\, all while maintaining a prolific and remarkably consistent career as a solo artist. The release of her anticipated album\, 1988\, adds to a series of landmark years for McKenna and follows three widely acclaimed albums: 2016’s The Bird & The Rifle\, 2018’s The Tree and 2020’s The Balladeer\, of which the Associated Press praised\, “McKenna has by now long established herself as one of the best songwriters working in any genre. And she does it again and again\,” while The Tennessean asserted\, “one of the sharpest pens in modern country and folk songwriting.” \n\nIn addition to her career as a solo artist\, McKenna continues to enjoy success as one of the music industry’s most in-demand songwriters. In 2023\, she was nominated for a Grammy for Best Country Song for co-writing “I Bet You Think About Me (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault)\,” performed by Taylor Swift. In 2017\, McKenna became the first woman to win the Academy of Country Music’s Songwriter of the Year award and the first woman to win the Country Music Association’s Song of the Year award two years in a row. She also won back-to-back Grammys for Best Country Song: for “Girl Crush\,” performed by Little Big Town\, in 2016 and “Humble and Kind\,” performed by Tim McGraw\, in 2017. In 2021\, McKenna won her third Best Country Song Grammy for co-writing “Crowded Table\,” performed by the Highwomen\, with Brandi Carlile and Natalie Hemby. In addition to writing songs for a multitude of award-winning artists — including Hunter Hayes\, Faith Hill\, Miranda Lambert\, Little Big Town\, Reba McEntire\, Tim McGraw and Carrie Underwood — McKenna also co-wrote “Always Remember Us This Way\,” which was featured in the Oscar-winning 2018 film “A Star Is Born.”

SUMMARY:Performance:Cole Chaney
DESCRIPTION:“Cole’s music transcends boundaries\, captivating audiences across the country with his soulful voice and electrifying stage presence.” –Melodic Magazine\n\nWhen it comes to his latest album\, In the Shadow of the Mountain\, 25-year-old singer-songwriter Cole Chaney is pretty candid and blunt about who he is and what kind of music he wants to make — the result of which\, this stunning offering from an artist wise beyond his age.\n\n“I’m not concerned with being labeled as ‘country\,’ whatever that means. And I’m kind of fed up with the scene\, it’s not what I’m into right now\,” Chaney says. Pointing to his lifelong admiration for 1990s rock as a vital influence on the sonic landscape of the album\, Chaney aimed to find a melodic balance between that raw and real rock sound and the bluegrass and folk music of his native Kentucky.\n\n“I wanted to make something that sounded like Ralph Stanley went in and got backed up by Soundgarden\,” Chaney notes. “I write what I listen to. And whatever I listen to is going to come out in my music.”\n\nFor Chaney\, even though he’s only in his mid-twenties\, his journey has been long and bountiful already. From growing up in rural Appalachia to going to welding school\, only to leave it behind and take a leap of faith when an opportunity to pursue music emerged. That life-changing decision led to Chaney hitting the road and finding work at The Burl\, a storied Lexington music venue. Chaney has come full circle with The Burl\, by selling out the space on multiple occasions to fervent crowds\, including the large outdoor stage.\n \nWith In the Shadow of the Mountain being the latest milestone for Chaney\, what remains is this driven musician in search of not only himself and his sound\, but also an audience just as hungry — for something new\, something different\, and yet something so familiar.

DESCRIPTION:“...an artist who has been deftly weaving bluegrass into ethereal\, indie-folk explorations since moving to Nashville from Michigan” –Rolling Stone\n\nLindsay Lou is a siren songbird who made her way into the world of music with groups like The Flatbellys and The Sweet Water Warblers. Adopted by the jamgrass scene\, frequently sitting in with bands like Greensky Bluegrass and writing and performing with Billy Strings\, she has toured all the world with her sweet and powerful sound.\n\nHot off over a year of touring with a folk-rock-quartet to deliver her newest album\, Queen of Time\, Lindsay Lou has returned to a more intimate sound with what she’s calling her Honey Moon Trio. SUMMARY:Performance:An Intimate Evening with Shovels & Rope
DESCRIPTION:New Music!\n\nShovels & Rope is the Charleston\, South Carolina–based duo of Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent. They perform as an energetic two-piece band\, stirring up a righteous racket with two old guitars\, a handful of harmonicas\, the occasional keyboard\, and a junkyard drum kit harvested from an actual garbage heap and adorned with tambourines\, flowers and kitchen rags. But the songs are the deadliest arrows in this duo’s quiver. Since 2010\, Shovels & Rope has been traveling the highways and back roads of North America\, logging hundreds of shows and performing for crowds large and small. If you enjoy the tough new strain of Southern songwriting exemplified by Justin Townes Earle\, Jason Isbell\, the Felice Brothers\, Hayes Carll\, and Butch Walker\, Shovels & Rope are not to be missed. \n\nShovels & Rope come to The Ark with their latest album\, Something is Working Up Above My Head.

SUMMARY:Performance:Great Lake Swimmers
DESCRIPTION:“A stunning variety of tones and textures… nothing less than both cerebral and sublime” –American Songwriter\n\nFeaturing a blend of acoustic instruments\, rural soundscapes\, and wistful vocals\, Great Lake Swimmers are a critically acclaimed indie-folk group led by Tony Dekker. Based in Southern Ontario\, the group emerged in the early 2000s with a succession of heavily atmospheric albums recorded in old silos and rural country churches. The music developed in that pastoral warmth\, performed and recorded in acoustically resonant and historical locales with a revolving cast of personnel. They are renowned for homespun folk and lush\, intimate Americana in their live shows.\n\nTheir newest album\, Caught Light\, out Oct 10\, 2025\, is their most immediate and instinctive album to date. Recorded in just five days in Ontario’s Ganaraska Forest with producer Darcy Yates (Bahamas) and engineer Jimmy Bowskill (Blue Rodeo)\, it draws warmth from early ’70s folk-pop while embracing a new spontaneity and directness in Dekker’s songwriting.\n\nGreat Lake Swimmers have been shortlisted for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize and nominated twice for Canada’s Juno Awards\, with the CBC calling them “a national treasure.”
