DESCRIPTION:This workshop provides practical\, theory-driven guidance on methods for studying structural oppression\, with a focus on structural racism\, structural sexism\, and intersecting systems of inequality. Despite growing interest in this research\, substantial challenges remain\, including fragmented data ecosystems and limited adoption of theoretically grounded\, empirically rigorous methodologies.\n\nWorkshop instructors will offer conceptual and analytical clarity\, showcasing diverse data sources on structural oppression\, with guidance on accessing\, linking\, and analyzing these data. The workshop will also highlight best practices for the scientific study of structural oppression by operationalizing structural oppression in ways that reflect its multifaceted\, multilevel\, and systemic nature\, alongside its other core dimensions\, including relational power dynamics\, institutionalized structures\, sociohistorical contexts\, oppressive schemas and logics\, the roles of specific actors\, the inactions and omissions that sustain these systems\, and intersections among forms of oppression.\n\nWorkshop Format:\n\nMorning Sessions: Interactive lectures on cutting-edge methodological approaches\, with real-world examples.\n\nAfternoon Sessions: Hands-on exercises and individualized consultations to support participants' research interests. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:Carlo Vitale is a distinguished Michigan-based artist whose vibrant contributions to the Detroit art scene have flourished since the 1970s. A native of Detroit\, Vitale's work is celebrated as part of the second generation of the Cass Corridor Art Movement\, Detroit’s first avante garde. His art draws inspiration from the sweeping vistas of farmland seen from above\, the intricate patterns of quilt-making\, the dynamic energy of cityscapes\, and the rich tapestry of daily life. Vitale eloquently characterizes his mesmerizing oil paintings and prints as “kinetic\, metaphysical abstractions\,” inviting viewers to engage with the depth and vitality of his creative vision.\n\nVitale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit.  His work can be found in many collections including The Whitney Museum of Fine Art in New York\, The Detroit Institute of Art\, Cranbrook Art Museum\, Wayne State University Collection\, University of Michigan Museum of Art and corporate\, hospital\, and private collections throughout the country.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Statistical Learning for Recurrent Event and Complex Network Data
DESCRIPTION:The development of modern technology has generated large-scale\, complex datasets that pose significant challenges to traditional statistical methods. This dissertation presents novel statistical modeling frameworks and efficient computational methodologies tailored for large-scale recurrent event data and complex network data.\n\nThe first chapter focuses on recurrent event data\, introducing a general framework that models the conditional mean function of the recurrent event process as the solution to an Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE). This flexible approach covers a wide range of semi-parametric models\, including both non-homogeneous Poisson processes (NHPPs) and non-Poisson processes. We develop a Sieve Maximum Pseudo-Likelihood Estimation (SMPLE) method and establish its consistency\, asymptotic normality\, and semi-parametric efficiency.\n\nThe second chapter addresses signed network data\, where relationships exhibit a complex interplay of positive (e.g.\, liking\, alliances) and negative (e.g.\, disliking\, conflicts) interactions. This chapter presents a novel latent space model that uses non-linear kernel functions to capture the sign-generating pattern of signed networks. Based on this framework\, we identify a new sufficient condition for achieving population-level balance. We develop efficient projected gradient descent (PGD) algorithms to estimate the latent variables and establish non-asymptotic error rates for parameter estimation under both correctly and mis-specified settings.\n\nThe final chapter introduces a latent space model for analyzing longitudinal network data. This approach employs multivariate counting processes to model interaction sequences between node pairs\, with intensity functions depending on static latent variables\, time-varying baseline intensities\, and time-varying edge covariates. We develop an efficient spline-based sieve estimation method and establish the non-asymptotic error rate of the corresponding PGD estimator under both parametric and nonparametric settings.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... DESCRIPTION:Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative showcases the depth of artistic excellence and merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan and recognizes the creativity\, rigor and innovation of artists and collaboratives working in the region\, inspiring the next generations of artists in our state.\nIn the of fall of 2024\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. \nA shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Juana Williams\, art curator and writer based in Detroit\, Michigan\; Melinda Zacher Ronayne\, former director of visual arts at the Interlochen Center for the Arts\; and Parisa Ghaderi\, assistant professor of graphic design at Shoreline Community College and winner of the 2023 Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award. \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2025:\nConor Fagan obtained his Master of Fine Arts degree at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in the spring of 2014. Among his many numerous awards and grants\, he has been one of twelve international artists selected to participate in The 31st annual International Symposium of Contemporary Art in Baie – Saint Paul\, Quebec\; a year-long artist in Residence at the Roswell artist-in-Residency in Roswell\, New Mexico\; and a featured artist at the 2020 Spring Break Art Show\, in New York\, New York. He has had solo shows with My Pet Ram and Gitler &amp\; in NYC\, and most recently has been featured and won an award at The 2025 Regional Show at the Dennos Museum and Cultural Center. He has works in numerous public collections including the Waterton - Global corporate collection\, the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art\, and the Museum of Modern Art in Baei St Paul. His work has been collected privately both nationally and internationally. Currently\, he teaches and lives outside of Traverse City at Interlochen Arts Academy\, nestled among the trees\, rivers\, and lakes of northern Michigan.Katie Mongoven/上秋莲 is a Chinese American fiber artist from Washington\, DC\, based in Detroit\, MI. Her work investigates and fortifies the space between cultural dichotomies through multiple fiber processes. She received her BFA from the University of Michigan and MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, with the Surface Design Association’s Outstanding Student Award. She was a Roman J. Witt Visiting Artist at the University of Michigan\, a Windgate University Fellow at Arrowmont School of Arts &amp\; Crafts\, and the 2024 Barstow Artist-in-Residence at Central Michigan University. Other residencies attended include the California Institute of the Arts\, the University of Michigan\, Vermont Studio Center\, and forthcoming Stove Works (TN) in 2025. Solo and group exhibitions include Central Michigan University (MI)\, Playground Detroit (MI)\, Riffe Gallery (OH)\, and ROY G BIV Gallery (OH). She has public and corporate commissions at the Cranbrook Art Museum\, PayTile\, and Cross River Bank. Her work is held in public collections at Central Michigan University\, Summa Health\, and MetroHealth\, and in numerous private collections throughout the United States.Sara Nickleson is an artist\, curator\, and gallery director based in Detroit\, Michigan. She held the position of Senior Director at Library Street Collective gallery from 2016 to 2022. Prior to moving to Detroit\, Nickleson was the Head Curator and Director of Collections at the Design Exchange (DX) in Toronto\, Canada\, where she curated a number of internationally acclaimed exhibitions\, including This is Not a Toy\, The Politics of Fashion\, and 3DXL. Nickleson has written for a number of arts publications\, including exhibition catalogs (José Parlá: Polarities\; This is Not a Toy\; Coping Mechanisms\, Sam Durant: Iconoclasm) and artist monographs (Sam Friedman\, Tyrrell Winston). She has been a visiting curator and critic\, and was invited by the British Council to take part in their Design Connections symposium as part of London Design Week in 2015. Exhibitions of her artwork include a solo show at Louis Buhl &amp\; Co. (Detroit) as well as a number of group presentations. Nickleson received her BFA from the University of Windsor (Windsor\, Canada)\; a BID from the College for Creative Studies (Detroit\, MI)\; and an MFA in Painting from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills\, Michigan.\nFrom June 26 through August 2\, 2025\, Fagan\, Mongoven\, and Nickleson will present their work in a group exhibition at Stamps Gallery\, with logistical and curatorial support from the Gallery's professional staff.\n2025 Envision Awardee Named\nAt the exhibition's opening reception on June 26\, the jury reconvened to select the Envision 2025 Award recipient\, awarding Sara Nickleson a $5\,000 prize.\nIn a statement about Nickleson's work\, the jury noted: “Sara Nickleson’s ambitious paintings boldly invite us to explore our relationship with the unknown. At a time when the world is deeply divided\, when diverse perspectives and experiences are being weaponized by fear\, Nickleson’s paintings meticulously build another world - one mark\, one brush stroke at a time. Layering colors and mark-making that draw on prehistoric forms and symbols\, Nickleson seeks a new futurity that acknowledges the losses\, and co-existence that build on our differences and commonalities. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test takes approximately three hours in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed via Zoom and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed online through Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.IMPORTANT: The interview portion will carry the most weight\, as it will serve to validate the student's performance in the other two portions. Consequently\, the final score/rating will be based primarily on the student's performance during the interview. The ratings for the writing and reading portions will be secondary.\nIn cases where there is any discrepancy in performance across the three portions of the test\, students will be asked to take an in-person validation test at the proctor's office. How is the result calculated?Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the LSA Language Requirement.Where can I view my results? Placement results are posted within 7 business days after taking the test. Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Intermediate Questionnaire Design\nJuly 21-24\, 2025\n12:00pm-4:00pm EDT\nLive Online via Zoom\n\nParticipants should have prior knowledge of questionnaire design before attending.\n\nThis course is designed to follow on from Introduction to Questionnaire Design or Designing and Writing Questions for Surveys: Guidelines and Recommendations. Now instead of looking at question comprehension from a cognitive side\, the linguistic side will be explored including online tools. Factual questions will be revisited but with the goal of exploring different types of respondent memory problems. Solutions include basic aids to improve memory and alternative methods: decomposition\, calendars\, event history calendars\, internet enabled devices\, wearables\, apps and sensors\, and additional tasks on mobile phones. Also covered are the effects of telescoping and quasi-facts. Subjective questions will be revisited to understand attitude consistency and inconsistency and to cover the popular topic of satisfaction and other customer experience metrics. Alternatives methods to attitude measurement will also be covered: factorial surveys and multi-item scales. The course concludes with multi-cultural issues raised by Rincón and a mini appendix on ways to translate survey questions and evaluate the translation. The course will be interactive with the goal of making it as close to in-person training as possible. There also will be workshops throughout. Pamela is happy to chat with participants about their own questionnaires.\n\nPamela Campanelli is a survey methods specialist\, chartered statistician\, fellow of the academy of social sciences and an international trainer\, researcher and consultant who runs her own business (http://www.thesurveycoach.com/). Her background is in social statistics\, survey methodology\, and psychology with a special interest in the study of survey error and data quality focusing on questionnaire design\, question testing strategies\, interviewing techniques\, sampling and weighting\, survey analysis\, and mixed-mode designs. In addition to providing consultancy\, conducting research\, writing papers\, reviewing for journals\, advising committees\, Dr. Campanelli’s focuses on providing training courses. She is committed to high quality learning. She believes in delivering courses that are lively and engaging\, foster an informal and interactive atmosphere\, communicate concepts in a straightforward and accessible way\, illustrate the material through the use of ‘real life’ examples\, and provide workshops to put theory into practice.\n\nThe Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques provides rigorous and high quality graduate level training in all phases of survey research.
